10 years, 10,000 pounds

November 10th, 2017

[caption id="attachment_10488" align="alignleft" width="1024"] Dr. Zarah Ali, Queen of the candy[/caption]

Thank you to our wonderful community for helping make our 10th Annual Candy Drive a huge success. Every year, the drive grows in size and scope. What started as a small candy buy back with a handful of local kids has grown into an endeavor that spans the Metrowest: this year, we have 41 number of schools participating, along with numerous businesses and organizations. Best of all, we have collected more candy than ever before: we have shattered a record of nearly 10,000 pounds of candy. To be exact, if anyone is curious, we collected 9,883.3 pounds of candy.

I’m sure everyone is wondering what we’re going to do with so much candy - and no, we will not be eating it all! The candy will be assembled into care packages and distributed to our troops all over the world. This is no small feat, and we are beyond thankful to be working with CarePacks, a non-profit organization who helps us make this happen.

Thank you to our troops and veterans for everything they do to keep us safe. The dedicated men and women who serve us overseas deserve so much more than we can offer; we simply hope these small treats offer a little taste of home, and a token of our gratitude.

Last but not least, congratulations to the winning school this year: Katherine Lee Bates Elementary School in Wellesley! They received our $1000 Grand Prize for the most candy collected per student.

Stay tuned for more pictures.

7th Annual Candy Drive: Send the Sweet Message of Support to Our Troops!

October 16th, 2014

[gallery link="none" ids="5854,5894,7179,7182"]

Halloween is right around the corner! For some, this is one of the most exciting holidays of the year, with its costume parties, spooky decorations, and of course, trick-or-treating!

The kids, probably, love this holiday the most - the look forward to dressing up and collecting sweets door-to-door in the neighborhood. They do a great job and often collect quite a bounty they can't possibly eat! Well, they will tell you otherwise, of course, but eating candy every day of the week does not benefit the health of their teethTo save the pretty little smiles from cavities AND to teach the young ones lessons of sharing, encourage the children (and adults!) to donate the leftover candy to our troops oversees at our 7th Annual Candy Drive! The soldiers love getting the letters and the sweet message of support from home!

We will be collecting candy, handwritten notes and cards for our soldiers from November 3rd to November 14th at our office at 5 Seaward Rd in Wellesley.  To schedule a drop-off, please call us at 781-237-9071. CarePacks, a non-profit organization, will help us ship these overseas to the soldiers!

The celebratory press event is scheduled for November 14th, 10 am at our office. Local media and photographers will capture your generous donation. Principals, faculty, parents, and students (with the permission from their teachers, of course) are welcome to attend. We would love for you to attend the event and see how our community unites in the spirit of giving!

Thank you! For more information, call 781-237-9071 or email us at smile@wellesleydentalgroup.com.
Best,

The caring team of Wellesley Dental Group.

Summer Experience at Wellesley Dental Group

August 29th, 2014

2014-02-20 08.40.13

Dear WDG,

Thank you to everyone at Wellesley Dental Group.  Special thanks to Dr. Femina and Dr. Ali for letting me shadow and be a part of their practice. My time at Wellesley Dental Group went above and beyond any shadowing experience I could have ever imagined. Going into this summer I expected shadowing to be hours of watching procedure after procedure; and I was right. Shadowing is just that, being a shadow. This office allowed me to step out of the shadows and become a helping hand. With the help of everyone at Wellesley Dental Group, I slowly learned how the practice operated. In the beginning I was taught the basics of sanitizing rooms and equipment. Gradually I began to help the dental hygienists by charting for new or existing patients. Now at the end of summer, I have been trusted in the assistant’s chair assisting Dr. Ali in several procedures. Throughout this wonderful progression I have experienced not only the life of a dentist, but also the lives of dental assistants, dental hygienists, and dental managers. This office also allowed me to observe a Pediatric Dentist, Dr. Kim, an Orthodontist, Dr. Emad, and a Periodontist, Dr. Ghazi. I have gained so much dental knowledge from everyone involved and for that, I am thankful. I could not have asked for a better summer experience.

Thank you Dr. Ali for not getting annoyed at me breathing down your back this summer .

Thank you Dr. Femina Ali for encouraging me to try new things around the office.

Thank you Carmen for being so happy all the time. Seriously, even when you were feeling down you still had a smile on your face.

Thank you Dewilca for being the friendly face I see when I step into the office.

Thank you Helio for being so darn nice. Side note, we make a good moving team.

Thank you Leyla for being the crazy of the office. Just kidding! You are the  lovable kind of crazy. I think everyone can agree.

Thank you Tanya for being so hardworking and helpful. Congrats hygienist!

Thank you everyone!

Your friend,

Justin Chow

How to Get Involved: Global Medical Brigades

August 28th, 2014

Wellesley College Student and Wellesley GMB Fundraising Chair, Zahra Pirani,  recently reached out to Drs. Ali & Ali, asking Wellesley Dental Group to show its support for the Global Medical Brigades, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. We are so proud to support them in this endeavor by donating oral hygiene supplies and we also want to raise awareness. Join us in giving back to this great cause! Call or email us for more information on the supplies they need at 781-237-9071 or smile@wellesleydentalgroup.com!

The Brigades is the world’s largest student-led international relief organization, whose members travel to rural communities with the mission to set up a medical clinic that provides free check-ups, routing testing, medication, and education to the community's members. In January 2015, Wellesley GMB will travel to Panama, where we will spend our time interacting directly with patients with the help of general practitioners, registered nurses, gynecologists, dentists, and pharmacists, thus ensuring that the hundreds of community members whom we will see will have access to preventative care, maintenance medications, and education about health and hygiene.

Wellesley GMB Chapter went to Honduras in January 2014 and saw over 900 patients, most commonly administering anti-parasitic medication to young children, monitoring the progress of chronic conditions, providing preventative medication and basic medical supplies to families, and much more. Wellesley GMB is particularly interested in improving the lives of women abroad via medicine. To ensure that the medical needs of the community will be met, the volunteers reach out to the community in efforts to raise funds and collect donations in medical supplies for the clinic.

Feeling the need to give back and volunteer? The group is also looking for medical professionals to volunteer. There is no time better than the present to take part!

Internship Experience at Wellesley Dental Group

August 18th, 2014

file2Hi, my name is Dan and I recently interned at Wellesley Dental Group.  It has only been a few weeks since my last day as an intern, and already I miss my friends and mentors at WDG.  I spent four years as a Pre-Dental student at Boston University, and I can say, without reservation, that my semester long internship at Wellesley Dental was the most eye-opening and rewarding learning experience of my life.

In November of 2013, about three months prior to my first day at WDG, I began researching the top dental practices around Boston for potential internship/shadowing opportunities.  I knew that my first hands-on experience in the dental world would forever shape my perception of how a dental practice should be run; so I took this research seriously.  Wellesley Dental Group quickly jumped out as the best fit for me.  I read dozens of customer testimonials glowing about the practice’s friendly staff and top-notch dental care.  I was wowed by the initiative taken by the practice’s team to get involved in the local community.  To me, Wellesley Dental Group seemed to be the perfect family dental practice.

As strong a reputation as Wellesley Dental Group carries, no reviews can possibly do this dental team justice.  From the second I walked into the office on the day of my interview, I was treated like a member of the family.  This is a team that wears its passion for dentistry and for premiere patient care on its sleeve and, throughout the semester, each team member took the time to share that passion with me.  This type of genuine warmth and spirit is why patients, many of whom enter the office prior to treatment unhappy with their teeth, are able to walk out of Wellesley Dental Group with new-found confidence in their beautiful smiles.

I really cannot stress enough how essential Drs. Ali & Ali and all members of the Wellesley Dental family have been to my growth as an individual and as a future dentist.  I have a long road ahead of me before I can own a dental practice, and I am unsure of what that road will bring.  I do know that if I am ever part of a practice even half as brilliant as Wellesley Dental Group, I will have done something right.

Seriously, thank you so much to the best dental team in the world!

Sincerely,

Daniel Nayebi

Wellesley's First Commercial Solar Installation

July 21st, 2014

On the sunny morning of July 18th, 2014, Wellesley Dental Group welcomed the local friends in the celebration the first commercial solar panel installation. The community came out to support the efforts of the local volunteers of the Wellesley Green Collaborative Network. Wellesley Weston Magazine (see article and pictures), Wellesley Townsman and Wellesley Media Corporation covered the community event.

The event started out with a heart-warming performance of the National Anthem by Evan Lariviere, a Wellesley student of the Upham Elementary School. Evan's calm and confident delivery helped the guests to stop for a moment to reflect and ponder about the main reason for the celebration - the community-wide effort to live in a better society and build a better world the children. The six-year-old shared that he likes doing things for the community and wants to be a dentist or an engineer.

Ellen Korpi and Phyllis Theermann, the volunteers of Wellesley Power to Choose and Sustainable Wellesley, started off with introducing Drs. Ali & Ali of Wellesley Dental Group as the local business owners, who are "leading by example", becoming the first business in Wellesley to go Solar. As the event went along the solar panels were being installed on the South-Eastern side of the building.

Ellen Gibbs, our Wellesley Selectman, honored Drs. Ali & Ali of Wellesley Dental Group and Wellesley Green Collaborative Network volunteers with commemorative Certificates of Appreciation (See the image gallery below).

Additionally, the State Representative Alice Peisch, congratulated the business on the recent transition to solar energy and thanked Wellesley Dental Group for "being a leader in Wellesley's sustainability-oriented initiative".

Drs. Ali & Ali appreciate all the support and strongly believe we should be thanking the community. Together we can do this! Thank you to all of the participants below (to name a few) and many others for your time and effort:

Townsman: Wellesley Dental Group joins list of solar-powered Wellesley buildings

July 11th, 2014

Townsman2014

Thank you, Matthew and Olivia!
Come join us at the Solar Installation Party and Open House on July 18th!
Event details are here.

Wellesley Dental Group joins list of solar-powered Wellesley buildings

Matthew Hornung ’16 and Olivia Gieger ’17

The drive for solar power just keeps pushing onwards. The latest advancement for Wellesley: solar panels on a local business.

Drs. Ejaz and Femina Ali of Wellesley Dental Group are in the process of installing solar panels on their office in town. They are installing the panels through the Sustainable Energy Committee’s town-wide initiative, More Power to Choose, which aims to lower energy usage through home energy audits and providing renewable energy opportunities to residents, like their easily-accessible solar power option. By signing up for solar, not only is Wellesley Dental Group reducing their carbon footprint, but they are also helping the town move closer to reaching its goal of installing 50 solar arrays.

Drs. Ali and Ali are “excited to announce this next step as a part of their mission to go green, which they have been working toward for years,” according to a recent press release. “Creating our own clean energy is not only a great economic choice but also is a step towards a common goal of creating a better environment for our children.”

Solar power is not the only way that Drs. Ali and Ali have introduced sustainability into their practice.  Wellesley Dental Group also uses digital x-rays, which eliminates the need for potentially radioactive chemicals used in other routine x-rays.  The office is also engaged in a continuous effort to be completely “paperless” by digitally saving all records, communicating with patients via email and cell phone, and recycling all paper and plastic.

For those interested in learning more about solar power in town, Wellesley Dental Group will be hosting a solar open house in conjunction with the Town’s Sustainable Energy Committee on Friday, July 18 at 10am.  The program will include musical entertainment and commentary from Sustainable Energy Committee Chair Ellen Korpi and Selectman Ellen Gibbs.  Wellesley Dental Group is located at 5 Seaward Road in Wellesley. All are welcome to join.

The Next Step Towards Green Dentistry - Going Solar!

July 7th, 2014

office-1024x335
Wellesley Dental Group is excited to be hosting a Solar Panel Installation party on July 18th, 10-11am, at our office at 5 Seaward Rd in Wellesley. The town of Wellesley is celebrating the first commercial installation of solar panels in town, made possible with the help of our collaborators, The Power to Choose and Sustainable Wellesley. Members of Sustainable Energy Committee, and Wellesley’s Green Collaborative Network will be attending the event, among others.
Going solar has inspired us to do further research on how to maintain a sustainable dental practice. Green Dentistry is becoming a new standard; recycling, efficient energy use and reducing pollution are the main features of this trend, united under the umbrella of the"re-think" approach. Business owners need to re-think the way the resources are utilized and what kind of impact that has on the environment. First, let's talk definitions and find out exactly what "Green Dentistry" is. Many experts agree that this term describes a practice that:

  • Reduces waste and pollution
  • Saves energy, water and money
  • Incorporates high-tech innovations
  • Is wellness based

Let's explore all these options in detail:

  • Reducing waste and pollution.

The EDA estimates 1.7 billion sterilization pouches and 680 million chair barriers, light handle covers and patient bibs end up in landfill each year from US dental offices alone. Four processes are responsible for the majority of waste generated by a regular dental practice:

    1. Infection control methods, including disposable barriers and sterilization items and toxic disinfectant. We diligently abide by the industry standards on cleanliness of the working areas and instrument sterilization.
    2. Placement and removal of mercury-containing dental material. We don't offer amalgam fillings and properly dispose of the extracted ones.
    3. Conventional x-ray systems. Our office uses digital X-ray machines.
    4. Conventional vacuum systems. Updating the standard systems are on our green list.

The other ways are:

    • Donate used clothes, shoes, etc. to organizations such as Cradles to Crayons. Check! Wellesley Dental Group is a permanent drop-off location for your donations.
    • Recycle ALL aluminum, glass, and plastic. Check!
    • Reuse or recycle paper and cardboard. Check!
    • Go paperless! Use electronics for paperwork, budget, paying bills, and marketing instead of paper (patients can fill out forms on an iPad or online, at home). Send appointment reminders through email, text messages, or recycled paper. Check! We are gradually decreasing the amount of paper used for the office communication and send email appointment reminders and newsletters.
    • Encourage your staff to bike, walk, or carpool to work. Check!
    • Use only low toxic cleaning products. Switching to eco-friendly cleaning products is on our to-do list!
  • Saving energy and water. Dental offices use a lot of electricity to run compressors, drills, overhead lights, operatory lights and computers. Dental vacuum systems can use as much as 360 gallons of water per day in a typical practice. It doesn't take replacing all the equipment in the practice today to go green. Simple changes in habits can make a big difference for the planet.

    • Opt in for solar energy. It is a great way to be a more sustainable business. Check!!!
    • Make sure your electronic equipment and office lights are turned off overnight. This will reduce "phantom load" which is estimated to account for 10% of the typical energy bill. Check!
    • Install programmable thermostats. Check!
    • Use a water-free hand disinfectant to clean hands. Check!
    • Replace high-energy office lights to energy-efficient fluorescent lighting. Working towards it!
    • Install ceiling fans where appropriate.
    • Install skylights to enhance lighting and keep it energy free.
    • Review your water bill monthly for spikes, and think of ways to reduce water waste.
  • Using Technological Innovations. Recently designed tools are more energy-efficient, produce better results and reduce pollution.
    • Digital Imaging (x-rays). Offer instant image availability, improved image quality, enhanced diagnostic efficacy and minimal radiation exposure. They also eliminate toxic x-ray fixer solutions and lead foils. Check!
    • Steam Sterilization. Time efficient and reliable, it eliminates toxic chemical sterilization vapors in the dental office environment. Check!
    • CAD/CAM Systems. Patients enjoy convenient completion of lab-quality restorations in single appointment and comfort of digital impressions. Check!
    • Oral Detoxification with Laser Hygiene Technologies. Check!
    • LED-Operatory Lighting. Check!
    • Digital Oral Cancer Screening. Check!
    • Digital Impressions. Check!
    • Digital Patient Charting. Check!
  • Focus on Wellness. A growing number of people seeks dental professionals who share their values of personal and planetary wellness. The dentist is not only a medical professional but also an educator, co-therapist and health coach. Drs. Ali and Ali have always invested their time to play that role in the patients' lives. Prevention is at the cornerstone of their practice.
    • Stay updated on the healthy trends and research, keep the patients informed about the ways to improve their wellness.  Check! Wellesley Dental Group maintains consistent presence on social media, regularly sharing information about the latest research, pertinent to the health-conscious community.
    • Help the patient relax in the chair and enjoy the visit. Check! We use music therapy to help our patients feel comfortable during their visit.
    • Prioritize preventive health, focus on the long-lasting treatment and quality dental work. Check! This has always been one of the focus points of our practice.

We are always looking for ways to improve and be responsible members of the community. We are not perfect but we are doing our best! If we have inspired you to research your options of having a more energy-sustainable home, please stay tuned, we will keep you informed! Feel free to contact Drs. Our Efforts of Protecting Young Athletes

June 23rd, 2014

WDG_sports_mouthguard

Several weeks ago Wellesley Dental Group partnered up with Wellesley School Athletics to organize raffles among the students who are actively engaged in contact sports. Lacrosse, baseball and softball team players entered the drawing to get a complimentary custom sports mouthguard for one member on each team. The initiative, dubbed "Protecting Our Athletes", was organized by Drs. Ali & Ali in an effort to spread awareness of the importance of oral protection on the sports field. Knocked-out and chipped teeth should not be on the list of trophies the young athletes get after a game. Their health, hundreds of dollars and parents' piece of mind can be preserved with the help of a proper-fitting sports mouthguard!

After the drawings were complete, the lucky winners visited the office of Wellesley Dental Group at 5 Seaward Rd in Wellesley. The process started with an individual consultation, during which the students explored their options in different levels of protection, demanded by the sport they play, and specific preferences of the  design (team colors or logo). As you can see on the picture above, the mouthguard fits comfortably in the mouth and offers stylish protection! The young players had their custom sports mouthguards manufactured within a week and reported to be relieved to see how comfortable they are. A custom mouthguard allows the athlete to speak and breathe easily, without the need to clench their teeth to keep it place. Opposite is often the case with basic store-bought mouthguards.

If you like to learn more about the benefits of a custom sports mouthguard, please refer to this link.

Wellesley Dental Group is Going Solar!

June 18th, 2014

going_solar_2014_drsali

Drs. Ali and Ali and the smile ambassadors at Wellesley Dental Group are going solar! We are excited to announce this next step as a part of our mission to go green, which we have been working toward for years. The first business in Wellesley to go solar, we look forward to promoting this sustainability-oriented initiative and reducing our impact on the environment.

Wellesley Dental Group partnered up with the Town of Wellesley Sustainable Energy Committee for an energy assessment, followed by a solar panels installation plan. The local solar initiative is an inspiration to re-think the energy consumption and further invest in going green. Creating our own clean energy is not only a great economic choice but also is a step towards a common goal of creating a better environment for our children.

As a business, Wellesley Dental Group has shown continuous effort to make the office more sustainable. Digital x-rays are used as used at Wellesley Dental Group, therefore eliminating the need for chemicals, routinely used for x-ray film processing. Both the patients and the staff benefit from the lack of exposure to those chemicals, as well as the added (and perhaps most important!) benefit of less radiation exposure. Further, in the continuous effort to go becoming a fully “paperless” office, Wellesley Dental Group saves all records in a digital form, uses primarily email and mobile phone updates for the patients, and recycles the  paper and plastic.

Feel free to contact Drs. Ali & Ali and the caring team at Wellesley Dental Group if you have any thoughts or concerns; they will be happy to answer your questions! Contact us today at 781-237-9071 or smile@wellesleydentalgroup.com to set up an appointment and consultation.
