How Does Your Cold/Flu Affect Your Mouth?

Catching a cold or the flu can be one of the worst things that come with the cold weather during winter. The (CDC) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that adults typically get a cold 2-3 times a year! A lot of challenges come with being sick, including trouble sleeping, eating, and just going about your normal daily activities. With a sore throat, stuffy or runny nose, and a box of tissues by your side, you may be looking to cough medicine and nasal decongestants to hide the symptoms. But, did you ever wonder how your cold or the medicines to treat them impact your teeth and mouth?  Here's some things to keep in mind in order to keep your body and mouth healthy while combatting a cold:

Stuffy Nose & Dry Mouth

It's a real struggle when you cannot breathe through your nose, especially when you're trying to get a good night's rest. As a result, you have to breathe through your mouth, which can cause you to experience dry mouth. Dry mouth occurs when there is less saliva flow, which can also occur from taking nasal decongestants like sudafed to remedy your stuffy nose. Unfortunately, dry mouth not only makes it hard to swallow, it can also impact your mouth by promoting bacterial growth. So, when taking nasal decongestants to help your cold, stay hydrated with water and chewing xylitol-containing gum can help stimulate saliva flow. You can also try using a humidifier in the room you sleep in.

Sinus & Tooth Pain 

Another obstacle that you may face as a result of being sick is tenderness and pain around your sinuses as a result of sinusitis. This can cause you to feel like you have a toothache in your upper jaw since they are near your sinuses. Some signs of sinusitis include a yellow colored mucous drainage, and pressure near your mid-face. Fortunately, this experience should improve once your cold clears up.

Cough Drops/Syrup & Throat Lozenges

Here's the scoop on cough syrup, cough drops and sore throat lozenges:  most of the time these products contain sugar for flavor and can be damaging to your teeth as they are held in your mouth for long periods of time. Not to mention, cough syrups are sticky and can remain on teeth and cause harm to your enamel. Try to look for pills, sugar-free cough drops, and sore throat lozenges as these are best for your oral health! Be sure to also keep your regular oral care routine brushing, flossing, and rinsing.

Orange Juice

Orange juice is loaded with vitamin C to help your immune system fight your cold. Due to the acidity which can weaken your tooth enamel, try drinking orange juice in one sitting during a meal, and drink water afterwards to help protect your tooth from the acid.

Everything You Need to Know about Fluoride Varnish

"My child's baby teeth are going to fall out eventually anyway, so what's the point in taking care of them?" This is a common question that many parents face. Baby teeth are necessary for a variety of reasons, including guiding permanent teeth into their proper positions. You also want to make sure that they remain healthy in order to prevent your child from developing a systemic infection, an abscess, or from experiencing pain. As soon as your child's baby teeth appear, make sure that you are brushing them and scheduling regular dental visits. As they become older, make learning how to brush fun through singing songs, brushing alongside your child, or even using toothbrushes and cool flavors of toothpaste that they pick out themselves.

Fluoride varnish is an important part of dental treatment as research shows that it helps prevent and stop the progression of cavities in baby teeth. It does this by remineralizing tooth enamel. Cavities form when bacteria found within dental plaque produce acid that eats away teeth. Since enamel is more sensitive in baby teeth than in permanent teeth, children are especially susceptible to developing cavities.

Applying fluoride varnish on your child is safe, quick, and painless! Fluoride varnish is brushed around the surfaces of each tooth and becomes a hard layer once saliva interacts with it. Once applied, food and beverages can be consumed with the exception of extremely hot or cold items. For 4-6 hours avoid brushing or flossing.

It's also important to note that fluoride treatments are not just for children. Individuals at a high risk for developing cavities should have fluoride! Fluoride is found in many toothpastes, most community water supply's, and several other products.

Goodbye 2016, Hello 2017!

Some common new year's resolutions are exercising more or trying a new activity, but did you know that improving your oral health should also be one of your priorities for 2017? Healthy teeth is the key to your overall well-being! A few small improvements could lead to great rewards.

The first step to a healthier mouth is to have better brushing and flossing habits.

  • If you've had your toothbrush for more than three or four months, replace it! Worn bristles don't clean your teeth as well as a brand new toothbrush!
  • Brush at least two times a day with a fluoride toothpaste for two minutes every day. This is the best way to avoid bad breath, cavities, and infection!
  • Don't forget to floss at least once a day to get rid of the bacteria and food particles stuck between your teeth.
  • Use a fluoride mouthwash.

Another important part of maintaining your oral health is your diet.

  • Avoid acidic and sugary drinks to prevent tooth decay!
  • Try to limit snacking in between meals
  • Chew sugar-free gum or brush after meals
  • Drink water with fluoride

And last but not least, make sure to schedule regular appointments with your dentist!

  • You could prevent oral diseases or fix them at an early stage

Sensational Sealants

Sealants, or plastic coatings that cover the surface of teeth (particularly molars and premolars), help prevent tooth decay by smoothing out uneven surfaces where bacteria and acids could get trapped. There are many different types of sealants, including: resin-based, glass ionomer, etc.

This treatment is especially recommended for children, but is also an option for adults who are prone to cavities. Even though brushing, flossing, and fluoride mouthwashes can remove plaque from your teeth, sealants add an extra layer of protection.

According to a systematic review of sealants published by the Cochrane Collaboration in 2013, scientists concluded that getting sealant treatment effectively reduces cavities for at least four years and that children without sealants were twice as likely to get cavities as those with sealants. Additionally, both the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend the application of sealants.

Sealants are also cost-effective compared to fillings. Although the cost depends on your insurance, fillings cost about $100 per cavity, while sealants only cost about $30 to $40 per tooth.

The Olympics Are Here!

August 5th marked the beginning of the 2016 Summer Olympics (or the Games of the XXXI Olympiad) with a stunning opening ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil!

Rio is the first South American city to become a host city for the Olympics. There are 33 venues in Rio de Janeiro, along with five venues at São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Brasilia, and Manaus. The motto for the 2016 Olympics is: Um mondo novo (which means "a new world" in Portuguese, Brazil's official language).

There were many controversies leading up to the games, including the instability of Brazil's government, Zika virus concerns, pollution in the Guanabara Bay, and Russia's doping scandal that banned athletes from participating in this year's Olympics.

This year, over 11,000 athletes from 206 nations are participating in 28 Olympic sports (including recently added golf and rugby sevens). There are 306 sets of medals at stake! In addition, there are both refugee and independent athletes competing this year.

Sports that have always been part of the Olympics include athletics (track and field), aquatics (swimming), cycling, fencing, and gymnastics. All exciting sports to watch!

But...let's take a closer look at the teeth of the Olympic athletes. The Oral Health Foundation, which claims that elite athletes are more at risk for dental erosion than the average person, recommends that they pay more attention to their oral health.

Why? Athletes are more likely to develop cavities because of the high carbohydrate content of their diets, including sports drinks, gels, and bars that are highly acidic, with pH levels below 5.5.

Protecting your teeth will surely earn you a gold medal at the dentist's! Here are some suggestions for teeth-friendly snacks to munch on while watching sports events.

Stock Up on Sugar-free Gum!

Sugar-free gum isn't just fun to chew - it can do the important job of preventing tooth decay as well!

The British Dental Health Foundation claims that chewing sugar-free gum after eating and drinking along with a proper brushing routing can both neutralize plaque acids and decrease the risk for cavities. The American Dental Association (ADA) suggests chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes following meals to reduce plaque and gingivitis as well.

What are some reasons why sugar-free gum is so beneficial for your oral health? It promotes saliva production, (which breaks down food particles and washes away acids) and the remineralization of tooth enamel.

So stock up on sugarless gum next time you go out!

The Power of Milk

A classic food pairing is cookies and milk, but have you ever stopped to wonder why? Sure, this combination is delicious. But did you know that according to researchers in The Journal of the American Dental Association, a glass of milk after eating sweets could keep tooth decay away?

However, it's not enough to just drink milk. It's important to drink milk after eating those sweets. The researchers also stated that the order that we eat sugary and non-sugary foods has a great impact on our oral health. This is due to the fact that consuming sweets causes the bacteria in the plaque on teeth to produce acids which can result in decay.

A study conducted at the University of Illinois at Chicago's School of Dentistry tested the effects of drinking milk, apple juice, and water after eating sugary cereal on the acidity of dental plaque. The results demonstrated that plaque acid levels decreased the most when participants drank milk after eating the cereal. Water was the second most efficient at lowering plaque acid levels, followed by cereal alone and apple juice. Therefore, if you are lactose intolerant, make sure to drink water after consuming sweets.

Milk is not only beneficial for our health. Did you know that the mutations that make us tolerant of milk are among those that are under the strongest selection in the human genome? The continued production of lactase, an intestinal enzyme needed during infancy to help digest lactose milk sugar, results from these mutations, which are prevalent in some parts of the world such as Northern Europe. However, most other populations cannot properly digest lactose, which often leads to diarrhea and other symptoms that are caused by the production of gases by the fermentation of gut bacteria. Furthermore, milk sugars can be easily removed from foods and the mutations are only needed for raw milk or whey.

It's a wonder why these mutations have lasted. Therefore, there have been many attempts to understand the reason behind their persistence by studying where and when humans used milk. Archaeologists have found evidence for the prevalence of females in animal herds and the presence of milk lipids on pots. In addition, international researchers at the Universities of York, Oklahoma, and Copenhagen, and University College London (UCL) studied ancient human calcified dental plaque. This team detected traces of beta-lactoglobulin, a dominant milk protein often used to build muscle mass, in ancient samples.

This new evidence proves that humans have consumed cattle, sheep, and goat whey since at least 5,000 years ago, which supports the fact that archaeologists have found milk fats on pottery and utensils from ancient farmers. The researchers even found proof of milk from the Bronze Age (c. 3150 BCE)!

This event is a great incentive for children to eat less candy, and provide a nature of sharing, patriotism, and community pride. All organizations, schools, and individuals are invited to participate. If you're one who likes a little friendly competition, you'll love to hear that this year we will be awarding a grand prize of $1000 to the school PTO that donates the most candy! The Boston Common Costume Dash

1,500 Costumed Crazies Will Run the Streets of Boston This Halloween

Happening today from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Copley Square is a fun Halloween tradition where the community gathers to run the streets of Boston in their Halloween costumes. This year about 1,500 runners are expected to attend. Admission is $50.

Is Halloween Candy a Trick or a Treat?

It’s almost Halloween and the scariest part of trick-or-treating often comes in the days that follow, as the candy stash still may be lying around the house. Although the Halloween costumes and decorations may be at the top of your child's mind right now, your child may also be eager to get a full bag of treats!

Many individuals are commonly aware that candy is not healthy, and can be particularly damaging to the enamel of teeth. Thus, your child may be facing a dilemma: How can something that tastes so good, be so damaging? Is candy a trick or a treat?

Annually, Americans spend approximately $9 billion total on candy, and both during and after Halloween, a lot of candy will lead to oral health problems! The natural bacteria in the mouth feed on sugar in candy and in turn produce acid. This acid destroys tooth enamel and causes decay if not properly taken care of.

It’s important to remember the damage that all the tasty candy can cause to teeth. While candy in moderation and followed by brushing and flossing can be okay, it can become an unhealthy snack habit! Some candies can be even more damaging for teeth than others. Sticky or chewy candies, including caramel, gummy candies, and taffy are more likely to get stuck between the crevices of teeth and can cause more damage to tooth enamel. The longer the sugar is stuck to the surface of teeth, the more time acid can be produced, increasing your risk of developing cavities. Also, sour candies are particularly bad choices of candy as they contain high acid levels. On the other hand, although containing sugar, dark chocolate contains antioxidants that may be good for the heart and even lower blood pressure, according to recent studies. Regularly encourage good oral health habits with your children, in addition to introducing healthy snack alternatives.

Improper pH Levels in the Pool Can Lead to Tooth Decay!

child-swimmingThe spring and summer aren’t the same without making a visit to the swimming pool! Pool safety topics, including the dangers of sun exposure, are usually reiterated as warm weather appears. Yet, many are unaware of the harmful chemicals in swimming pools that can affect your teeth! According to researchers at the New York University College of Dentistry, swimming pools can erode tooth enamel. Their research was conducted based on a case study of a 52 year-old man who had never examined or maintained the pH balance in his pool. Consequently, his oral health was significantly impacted. He developed extreme tooth sensitivity and tooth discoloration within a period of five months due to tooth enamel loss.

Chlorine and pH levels should be examined weekly in order to maintain a suitable swimming environment. If a pool is not properly maintained, your oral health can suffer dramatically. Whether you are cooling off in your own backyard pool, a friend’s pool, or a community pool, it is important to pay close attention to your oral health. An ideal pool pH level should fall between 7.2 and 7.8. Pool water below this range of pH levels is considered too acidic, which can erode tooth enamel in a short amount of time. The water can stain teeth and irritate your skin and eyes. Also, high pH levels can limit chlorine’s ability to sterilize water, which can cause environmental toxins and bacteria to enter your child’s system. These pools could be putting your family’s dental health at risk for permanent tooth damage.

Is your swimming pool safe for your family’s oral health? Worried about what chemicals might be swimming along with you in your local pool? No worries, there are ways to protect your family from exposure to harmful chemicals and keep your children healthy in the water.

Make sure that enjoying the pool isn’t harming your teeth. Here are a few tips:

  • Inform your family members to keep their mouths closed as much as possible when swimming.
  • Always brush your teeth after swimming to help restore your own pH levels within the mouth.
  • Only swim in a pool if the water looks clear. Cloudy water is a sign of a pool that's not being properly conserved.
  • Be aware of the pool lining and surrounding metal surfaces to see if there are spots of rust that show acid corrosion.

How Much Water Should I Drink?

womandrinkingwaterWe are all made up primarily of water.  In fact, about 60% of our body weight is water.  Water is crucial in the proper functioning of all of our physiological systems from flushing out harmful toxins to facilitating the travel of nutrients from one location to another.  We are constantly losing water through processes like sweating, breathing, and excretion.

The Institute of Medicine advises men to drink about 3 liters (13 cups) of water daily while women should drink about 2.2 liters (9 cups) of water daily.  Another way to calculate how much water you should drink, is to use the "half your body weight" rule.  For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, you should drink half that number in ounces (75 ounces of water).  One cup is defined as 8 ounces of water.  So, a 100 pound person should drink about 9.4 cups of water daily.  However, these guidelines for adequate intake of water will varying depending on individual lifestyles.  For example, an athlete that is constantly exercising or a person that lives in a hot, humid environment will need more water on a daily basis.  Intuitively, this makes sense.  You are losing fluids and electrolytes more quickly as you sweat more.

Surprisingly, thirst and dry mouth should not be used as accurate indicators of when to drink.  In fact, once you already feel these symptoms, your body is already dehydrated.  Dehydration can lead to a host of negative symptoms including: fatigue, headaches, dizziness, and weak muscles.  One effective way of determining whether or not you are drinking enough water is to examine the color of your urine.  A dark yellow color indicates dehydration while a clearer, lighter color indicates proper hydration.

The wide-range of benefits of drinking water are well-known.  Research has shown that sufficient water intake results in a better balance of body fluids, weight loss, healthier looking skin, and better bowel function.  Water is also beneficial for your teeth.  Water can wash away food debris and acidic residue left behind on teeth which keeps saliva levels high.  High saliva levels are necessary for combating cavities.  Furthermore, water can dilute high-sugar drinks and mitigate some of its harmful effects.

Sports Drinks Damage Teeth

Did you know that there is a strong correlation between sports drinks/energy drinks and tooth enamel damage? The Academy of General Dentistry has learned just how harmful these beverages are after completing a lengthy study. Over the years, children and teens have drunk an increasing number of sports drinks, which is leading to early tooth decay.

Various brands and types of drinks were tested, such as Gatorade, Powerade, Propel, Fuze, Monster, and Red Bull. Several factors were considered, such as the frequency of consumption, the sugar content, acidic properties, etc.

The AGD found that both sports drinks and energy drinks have acidic content, sugar, and more that contributes to the breakdown of tooth enamel. Frequent consumption of these beverages can lead to serious oral problems. You can read the study in full here.

Acid reflux disease and your teeth

Dentists can often see the signs of acid reflux disease in patients' mouths - sometimes before the patient even knows it's an issue.  Acid will wear away the enamel, leaving discoloration and pits in the teeth.acid erosion
