Drinking from a Can? Think Again!

Ever wonder if drinking from a can, a glass, or using straw could make a difference to your teeth? We all know that foods and drinks can play a role on the health of your teeth, but many would not have thought that the way you consume your drink can also be an important factor. Well, as it turns out, your drinking method does matter when consuming sugary beverages!

Sugary drinks can cause a lot of damage to your teeth, and your body too. According to a study published in the Academy of General Dentistry people in the United States consume about one and a half cans of soda a day, and a total of 576 each year! The study found that people who drink soft drinks straight from the can are more likely to get tooth decay on their back molar teeth. Consuming sugary drinks like sodas and energy drinks increase your risk of weight gain, and developing several medical conditions including Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and gout -and kids are not exempt! Children are 60% more likely to become obese with each sugary beverage consumed per day and are 2 times more susceptible to tooth decay.

Sugar as we know is what bacteria love to eat, and as a result the bacteria within your mouth produce acids that ultimately lead to tooth decay and breakdown your tooth enamel. But, we all have that craving for a soda every once and a while. That's why it is important to learn about preventative measures to take when consuming sugary beverages. Research shows that holding a drink in your mouth and taking long sips is detrimental to your teeth because it increases the acidity within your mouth. A smaller drop in the pH occurs when you drink the beverage straight down quickly and in one sitting. Sipping on a soda can throughout the day leads right to decay due to the constant exposure of your teeth to the sugars. The American Dental Association (ADA) also recommends using a straw positioned towards the back of your mouth when consuming beverages to avoid contact of the drink with your teeth. This of course does not prevent you from developing cavities, but it will help reduce your risk.

Not to mention, when you consume your sugary beverages also matters. It is best to do so during mealtime as opposed to by itself. Rinsing with water is also important to help wash away the sugars. In addition, avoid brushing immediately after consuming sugary drinks, because your tooth enamel is in a weakened state and can be harmed from brushing.

Remember, everything in moderation is key. Always try to be mindful of what drinks you are consuming and how you are consuming them.

Is Sparkling Water Affecting My Teeth?

As sparkling water becomes more popular, there's one question that comes into play when thinking about your oral health: Is the crisp and refreshing fizz of sparkling water healthy for your teeth? You may be wondering what the issue could be with sparking water, especially since most brands are sugar-free. However, carbonated drinks like sparkling water contain carbon dioxide, which turns into carbonic acid once in the mouth. This lowers the pH level and thus causes the mouth to become a more acidic environment. Some researchers have concerns about whether or not sipping sparkling water could lead to tooth decay due to erosion of the tooth enamel.

What do researchers say about Sparkling Water?

Current research has found that sparkling water in comparison to highly acidic beverages (for example, sports drinks) are much less erosive to teeth. In fact, the ADA states that it has a comparable effect on tooth enamel as ordinary non-carbonated water. Therefore, sparkling water is generally okay for your teeth, but it is recommended that you not substitute regular fluoridated water with sparkling water.Image result for sparkling water

Tips to help protect your teeth

  • Sparkling water is indeed less acidic and much better for your teeth than sugary drinks such as soda and sports drinks. Yet, it is important to also drink regular fluoridated water in order to keep your teeth strong and healthy. Fluoride helps remineralize tooth enamel and helps fight tooth decay.
  • Beware: some sparkling waters contain sugar which add to your risk of tooth decay.
  • Avoid sipping on sparkling water throughout the day, but rather drink it down with a meal/in one sitting in order to lower the amount of exposure to the carbonation. Also avoid adding acidic fruits like limes or lemons which can also lower the pH and increase the risk of enamel erosion. Enamel erosion can cause tooth sensitivity and discoloration due to the layer of dentin being exposed.

So, if you can, avoid sipping on acidic drinks throughout the day. Regular fluoridated water is often the best choice to keep your teeth healthy and mouth at a neutral pH!

Sensational Sealants

Sealants, or plastic coatings that cover the surface of teeth (particularly molars and premolars), help prevent tooth decay by smoothing out uneven surfaces where bacteria and acids could get trapped. There are many different types of sealants, including: resin-based, glass ionomer, etc.

This treatment is especially recommended for children, but is also an option for adults who are prone to cavities. Even though brushing, flossing, and fluoride mouthwashes can remove plaque from your teeth, sealants add an extra layer of protection.

According to a systematic review of sealants published by the Cochrane Collaboration in 2013, scientists concluded that getting sealant treatment effectively reduces cavities for at least four years and that children without sealants were twice as likely to get cavities as those with sealants. Additionally, both the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend the application of sealants.

Sealants are also cost-effective compared to fillings. Although the cost depends on your insurance, fillings cost about $100 per cavity, while sealants only cost about $30 to $40 per tooth.

Stock Up on Sugar-free Gum!

Sugar-free gum isn't just fun to chew - it can do the important job of preventing tooth decay as well!

The British Dental Health Foundation claims that chewing sugar-free gum after eating and drinking along with a proper brushing routing can both neutralize plaque acids and decrease the risk for cavities. The American Dental Association (ADA) suggests chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes following meals to reduce plaque and gingivitis as well.

What are some reasons why sugar-free gum is so beneficial for your oral health? It promotes saliva production, (which breaks down food particles and washes away acids) and the remineralization of tooth enamel.

The Effect of Birth Control on Oral Health

Birth control pills have many benefits and are a popular contraceptive method which increases estrogen/progesterone levels. However, they can also negatively affect your oral health.

According to The American Academy of Periodontology, many factors such as smoking, poor nutritiongenetics, and medications (including oral contraceptives, antidepressants, and heart medications) can impact gum health. These factors may increase risk for gum disease, which 75 percent of Americans, and especially periodontal disease, an advanced type of gum disease linked to osteoporosis, stroke, diabetes, heart disease, and low-birth-weight babies that 50% of Americans have.

Many studies have demonstrated the clear connection between dental health and sex hormones. The risk for periodontitis is especially high during puberty and pregnancy due to increased estrogen levels, which promote the flow of blood in the mouth and forces gums become red, swollen, and more susceptible to bacteria. Furthermore, women have a greater chance of having dental problems because of their hormones.

There is also evidence that those who use oral contraceptives had more bleeding sites, tooth attachment loss, gum gaps, inflammation, and gum destruction. If you are our patient, please let us know your history and habits so we can effectively treat and prevent gum disease. Certain medications can impact the effectiveness of antibiotics. To prevent and resolve gum disease, make sure to use an antimicrobial mouthwash, floss, and avoid smoking, stress, and sugar.

The Power of Milk

A classic food pairing is cookies and milk, but have you ever stopped to wonder why? Sure, this combination is delicious. But did you know that according to researchers in The Journal of the American Dental Association, a glass of milk after eating sweets could keep tooth decay away?

However, it's not enough to just drink milk. It's important to drink milk after eating those sweets. The researchers also stated that the order that we eat sugary and non-sugary foods has a great impact on our oral health. This is due to the fact that consuming sweets causes the bacteria in the plaque on teeth to produce acids which can result in decay.

A study conducted at the University of Illinois at Chicago's School of Dentistry tested the effects of drinking milk, apple juice, and water after eating sugary cereal on the acidity of dental plaque. The results demonstrated that plaque acid levels decreased the most when participants drank milk after eating the cereal. Water was the second most efficient at lowering plaque acid levels, followed by cereal alone and apple juice. Therefore, if you are lactose intolerant, make sure to drink water after consuming sweets.

Milk is not only beneficial for our health. Did you know that the mutations that make us tolerant of milk are among those that are under the strongest selection in the human genome? The continued production of lactase, an intestinal enzyme needed during infancy to help digest lactose milk sugar, results from these mutations, which are prevalent in some parts of the world such as Northern Europe. However, most other populations cannot properly digest lactose, which often leads to diarrhea and other symptoms that are caused by the production of gases by the fermentation of gut bacteria. Furthermore, milk sugars can be easily removed from foods and the mutations are only needed for raw milk or whey.

It's a wonder why these mutations have lasted. Therefore, there have been many attempts to understand the reason behind their persistence by studying where and when humans used milk. Archaeologists have found evidence for the prevalence of females in animal herds and the presence of milk lipids on pots. In addition, international researchers at the Universities of York, Oklahoma, and Copenhagen, and University College London (UCL) studied ancient human calcified dental plaque. This team detected traces of beta-lactoglobulin, a dominant milk protein often used to build muscle mass, in ancient samples.

This new evidence proves that humans have consumed cattle, sheep, and goat whey since at least 5,000 years ago, which supports the fact that archaeologists have found milk fats on pottery and utensils from ancient farmers. The researchers even found proof of milk from the Bronze Age (c. 3150 BCE)!

National Children's Dental Health Month 2015

The month of February marks National Children’s Dental Health Month! Sponsored by the American Dental Association (ADA), this celebration is the perfect time for children to learn about the importance of oral health as their teeth start to grow. Tooth decay is the #1 childhood disease around the world! Surprisingly, more than 51 million school hours are lost each year in the United States due to children missing school for dental-related problems. The good news is that it's preventable with proper oral health habits!

The campaign slogan this year is, "Defeat Monster Mouth!" The ADA provides many free resources, including games, puzzles, cool coloring sheets and posters for a wide range of age groups that can help in promoting the advantages of practicing good oral health habits.

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), childhood caries can lead to malnutrition and life-threatening infections. In addition, poor oral health habits not only affect children's teeth and smile, but also their school performance, social development, and overall health. Dental health plays a major role in maintaining overall health, making it extremely important to take care of  your children’s teeth and initiate healthy habits early.

Although primary teeth eventually are replaced by permanent teeth, maintaining them is particularly important to your child's oral health and the health of the developing permanent teeth. Primary teeth can impact your child's speech development and facial structure by ensuring permanent teeth develop in their normal positions.  Although baby teeth are eventually replaced with permanent teeth, it is essential to keep them healthy.

Books Kids Can Sink Their Teeth Into!

There are several ways to teach and get your child excited about proper dental care. Yet, sometimes the lesson can be learned from simply reading a story. Children tend to enjoy stories that highlight characters and creative illustrations that they can relate to, which is also the same when it comes to books about dental health!

Losing teeth is a rite of passage for children. Many kids are generally excited when they reach this milestone, while some are nervous and concerned about feeling pain with the loss of a tooth. Your child’s first lost tooth can stir up a lot of questions from your little one. Questions that range from “Why did my tooth fall out?” to “Will I talk or look funny when my tooth comes out?” They may even ask, “What replaces the tooth?” or “Is the tooth-fairy real?”

A good way to answer some of these questions and reassure your child that losing primary teeth is a natural part of growing up is to introduce them to books about teeth! A great number of books contain well-known characters and fun pictures that can get them enthused about taking care of their teeth.

It is important to remind your child that even though primary teeth are expected to fall out, they still must be properly cared for in order to have healthy permanent teeth. If primary teeth are lost prematurely as a result of tooth decay, permanent teeth may not come into their sockets properly, leading to other oral health problems. Unfortunately, tooth decay is currently the number one disease that affects children. It's estimated that 40% of children have experienced tooth decay before starting kindergarten. A step toward defeating cavities is to teach good oral habits.

Packed Lunches for Kids Promote Healthy Teeth

lunch boxDon’t let dental related problems be the reason for your child’s absence from school! Eating unhealthy snacks and junk foods can lead to an extra trip to the dentist for cavity treatments. Next week when school is back in session, make sure your kids get healthy snacks for lunch.

School’s can potentially be risky environments for dental health, especially with the availability of vending machines that contain unhealthy snacks and sodas. In order to enhance your child’s health and smile, it is important to consider and implement nutritious foods for lunch. Poor nutrition can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. If you pack their lunches, make sure to include foods that contain nutrients essential to their oral health, such as carbohydrates, protein, calcium, and vitamins A and C.

Packing healthy foods for lunch will foster good nutritional habits within kids. The following tips  for packing healthy lunches can help meet your child’s dental and nutritional needs:

Healthy Fruits and Vegetables:

Who doesn't enjoy finger foods? Cutting slices of cucumber or carrots into bite-size pieces are easy and healthy to snack on. Try avoiding sugary dressings, potatoes, and fries.

Fruits including oranges, pears, and pineapple can be sliced into sections for a sweet and filling snack. Also, the potassium in bananas, and fiber and vitamins in apples are essential for maintaining good oral health. Try avoiding grapes due to their high sugar content.

Protein:

Eating proteins will help keeps muscles healthy and strong. Peanut butter, lean turkey, and nuts all have a good source of protein and are easy to pack for school.

Carbohydrates:

Carbohydrates provide energy for your children to focus and learn throughout the school day. Whole wheat bread, whole grain tortillas, pita bread, or bagels are all tasty carbs that your child can enjoy. Cheese is a good source of calcium and can also protect teeth from decaying. Try adding low-fat string cheese to whole grain crackers.

Drinks:

What your kids drink is equally important as what they eat. Water, especially fluoridated water, helps strengthen tooth enamel and wash down leftover pieces of food. Unsweetened tea also contains fluoride. Milk is a healthy option because it provides vitamin D and calcium. Avoid sports drinks, which contain a large amount of sugar, processed milk, as well as most juices.

Home Whitening Done Right

Whitening your teeth at home has never been easier with so many whitening kits available for purchase at anywhere from cosmetic shops like Sephora to grocery stores.  Some of the more popular whitening kits include Crest 3D Whitestrips and GLO Brilliant Personal Teeth Whitening Devices.  Although such "DIY" style teeth whitening may seem safe and effective, it is still important to discuss whitening treatment options with your dentist prior to using them.  In fact, even the American Dental Association (ADA) suggests that people should see a dentist prior to undergoing any sort of teeth whitening by a non-dentist.

Although many of us equate a bright, white smile with healthy teeth, the ADA warns that white teeth may not necessarily be healthy teeth.  For instance, teeth naturally yellow with age regardless of oral health.  Additionally, ultra white spots on your teeth could suggest that you have too much fluoride in your diet or act as an indicator of calcium deficiency.  A consultation with your dentist prior to starting a home whitening program is crucial for many reasons.  First, a dentist can supervise your teeth as you are using a whitening program.

For instance, your dentist could prevent you from experiencing the effects of over-bleaching, which include uneven color spots or even a bluish hue.  Additionally, it is important to have healthy gums as diagnosed by a dentist because whitening can cause gum irritation in certain cases.  Another common side effect of whitening is heightened teeth sensitivity.  Dentists can predict whether or not you will experience sensitivity issues and recommend products like special sensitivity toothpastes accordingly.  Finally, sometimes you don't even need a whitening kit for whiter teeth!  In some cases, a simple scaling and professional cleaning procedure is sufficient for a brighter smile.

Dr. David McFadden, a professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Texas says, "For someone with deep cavities, the bleach can have an unimpeded route to the blood vessels, nerves and bone at the root of the tooth.  It can potentially cause a bad toothache or precipitate an infection."  A dentist can quickly spot developing cavities and treat them prior to any whitening regimen to avoid pain or infections.

 1. Plan ahead

If you or your family members haven’t had their bi-yearly dental check ups yet, now may be a good time to do so.  By seeing a dentist before leaving for vacation, you can guarantee that there will be no sudden dental problems that require medical attention while abroad.  For instance, having a cavity spotted and filled early might prevent annoying toothache issues that are difficult to treat away from home.

Furthermore, make sure you have all your medical and dental insurance information handy and kept in a safe place in case of an emergency.

2.  Keep things organized

Keeping all your oral health tools in one place will save time and effort.  Carrying a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss in your carry-on bag will be helpful during long flights.  Another option would be to purchase smaller versions of your usual arsenal of products.  There are many travel-sized versions of all major toothpaste and mouthwash brands at most convenience stores.  Make sure to brush your teeth after every meal (just like you would at home) even while on a plane!

3.  Cover your toothbrushes

Throwing an uncovered toothbrush into your carry-on bag or placing it on countertops of hotel bathrooms gives unwelcome bacteria the opportunity to invade its bristles.  In order to prevent this, it is important to cover toothbrushes with a clean, plastic cover.  It’s crucial to let all toothbrushes air-dry before placing the cover on it, because covering a moist toothbrush will actually encourage bacteria growth.

4.   Maintain healthy eating habits

Vacation time is certainly a time to indulge.  However, keep some healthy snacks like fruit or veggies in hand for in between meals.  You can satisfy your appetite by chewing on nutritious snacks throughout the day and perhaps turn down a tempting sugary drink later on.

What Is Oil-pulling?

olive oilThe latest dentistry-related craze to hit social media has been an article on the miraculous benefits of "oil-pulling" on oral health.  Some articles claim that this new fad can even eliminate acne and eczema, cures hang-overs, aids in sleep problems, and helps alleviate general pain.  Could oil-pulling be a new cure-all health practice or is it just another pseudoscience fad?

Oil-pulling is an ancient folk practice originating from India.  Essentially, this practice entails swishing a tablespoon of any cold pressed, vegetable-based oil like coconut oil around in your mouth for 20 minutes every morning.

If you haven't seen any of these articles yet, here are a few of the dentistry-related claims they make:

  • Removes bacteria and toxins in your mouth and lymph system
  • Re-mineralizes teeth
  • Strengthens gums
  • Whitens teeth naturally
  • Reduces bad breath

Groups of bloggers and scientific researchers have both been questioning the validity of all these claims.  Although there is some scientific literature supporting some of the claimed benefits of oil-pulling, the research does not lend any clear substantial support.  In fact, some report that a placebo effect is actually taking place.

An online community of doctors called Science Based Medicine state that "oil pulling for general health or any other indication is pure pseudoscience."  Other scientists and medical practitioners are choosing to take a more middle-ground stance on this practice.  Dr. Sanda Moldovan, a periodontist, agrees that maintaining proper oral health is essential to be healthy overall and that oil-pulling is just another (and not necessarily crucial) method of maintaining healthy teeth.  Studies have shown that coconut oil does indeed remove harmful bacteria from your mouth.  However, research has also shown that oil-pulling is not much better than regular mouthwash in removing harmful bacteria in your mouth.

The verdict?  It would best be advised that people should remain cautious to believe and try everything they read online through social media.  Although oil-pulling might have some health benefits, it seems that there is not enough scientific support to back up all of its claims.

"Does My Breath Smell?"

Cure Bad BreathHaving bad breath can be a symptom of a host of oral health problems like severe tooth decay, infections in the mouth, and gum disease.  In other cases, bad breath can just be the result of a garlic-heavy lunch.  Regardless, having odor-free breath is essential in our day-to-day social interactions with others.  Have you ever wondered if your breath smelled and had no way to check?  Although many people employ the strategy of breathing into their cupped hands to check, this method is actually ineffective.  Our bodies are all individually acclimated to our own scents, and thus it is difficult to notice any changes in the smell of our breath.

Luckily, there are other ways you can quickly check the smell of your own breath.

  • Cotton test: Take a cotton swab and run it across the top of your tongue near the back and smell it.  If it smells bad or is yellow in color, this suggests elevated sulfide production.
  • Wrist test: Lick your wrist and wait about 10 seconds before smelling it.
  • Dental floss/toothpick test: Smell floss or toothpick after you are done using it and look for any bad odors.
  • Mirror test: If the very back of your tongue is whitish in color, this may suggest foul odor.

A Smarter Brushing Experience

There is no doubt that smart phones have become a permanent staple in our day to day lives.  From editing pictures to counting calories, it seems like smart phones can do it all!  Now, with the production of Oral B's smart toothbrush, your smart phone can even help you brush your teeth better.

This electronic smart toothbrush (to be released worldwide in June, 2014) is linked via Bluetooth 4.0 to an app that can be downloaded for both Android and iOS devices.  The best features of this toothbrush include a video simulation that shows you exactly where to brush, which areas are neglected, and how hard to brush.  Additionally, it provides tips on how to improve your brushing habits by charting your progress.  Users found that using the electronic smart toothbrush significantly extended brushing times.

We highly recommend using electric toothbrushes if you look more thorough brushing results, they can make a huge difference in your oral hygiene. Cranberries to the Rescue! The Hero in Fending off Oral Thrush

cranberriesCranberries can be a delicious snack on the go and, in form of juice, can be a great way to quench your thirst. Along with being a healthy component to a meal, studies have shown that cranberries may very well keep oral thrush away!

Oral thrush is a common condition where a fungus called Candida albicans that can be found on the lining of your mouth. Oral thrush can leave white lesions, usually foud on the tongue or inner cheeks. These lesions can be very painful and can bleed when scraped. If oral thrush is not treated, it can spread to the roof of the mouth, the tonsils and even the back of the throat.

So what exactly causes thrush? Small amounts of fungus can be found in the mouth, digestive tract and skin of completely healthy people. Fungus is usually kept in check by bacteria and microorganisms found in the body. However, stress and certain medications which can cause fungus to grow without a check in the body.

Oral thrush can affect all age groups including babies, who can pass the infection onto their mothers during breast-feeding. Those who smoke or wear dentures are also at a higher risk of developing thrush.

Researchers at Rutgers University and the University of Laval in Quebec, Canada found that in ingredient in cranberry called AC-PAC that is successful in inhibiting the disease-causing properties of Candida albicans. AC-PAC works to prevent biofilm from forming at the gumline. C. albicans are prone to stick to the oral epithelial cells and saliva-coated resin discs. Because this infection needs to stick to biofilm to spread, AC-PAC can prevent the infection by decreasing adherence, and thus, decreasing infection rates.

Cranberries don’t only come to the rescue in terms of oral thrush; studies have shown that cranberry juice is effective in preventing plaque formation on teeth. Drinking cranberry juice daily is great for fighting off urinary infections and can even kill off bacteria that is known to be the cause of stomach cancer and ulcers.

Make-up Tricks for a Whiter Smile!

Applying a matte bronzer the hollows of your cheeks and all over your face gives your skin a sun-kissed glow.  The tanning effect of bronzer makes the whiteness of your teeth stand out.  The main areas you should focus on while applying bronzer are: under your cheekbones, sides of the nose, jawline, and under the chin.

Strategically choosing the right lip color is also very important.  A lip gloss or lipstick with cool undertones of blue or purple also give the illusion of whiter teeth because it counteracts the yellow-ness of teeth.  A berry-tinted lip gloss would be a great choice for this winter!  However, if purple-toned lip colors are out of your comfort zone, a classic red lip will also create an illusion of whiter teeth because it makes a sharp color contrast.  It is important to avoid any orange-based peach or caramel undertones in lip glosses because they enhance any yellow coloring of teeth.

Another useful trick to counterbalance any yellowing is to focus on your eye makeup and really making them pop.  Again, using cooler toned shades like purples and greens are your best bet.

Is Chewing Gum to Blame for Headaches in Kids?

gum chewing headachesGum chewing is a common habit for both adults and adolescents.  Although chewing gum can provide dental benefits like whitening and aid in the prevention of tooth decay, research has shown that chewing gum may not be as beneficial as once thought.  Many would not think to relate gum chewing with prolonged headaches.  However, recent research has begun to elucidate the correlation between the two.

Dr. Nathan Watemberg of Tel Aviv University and Meir Medical Center looked at the relationship between frequent gum chewing and headaches specifically in adolescents.  He focused on a group of patients between the ages of 6 and 19 who both reported chronic migraines or headaches and chewed gum on a daily basis.  Once the group of adolescents quit gum chewing entirely, almost 90% of the group reported decreased frequency and intensity in headaches and more than half of the group reported that their headaches completely disappeared.

There are a few theories that seek to to explain why gum chewing might cause headaches.  For one, the physical act of prolonged chewing causes stress to an area of the head where the jaw is connected to the skull.  Alternatively, some researchers believe that the artificial sweetener used in some types of gum is the culprit.

Regardless of the reason, it seems that forgoing gum chewing may alleviate the debilitating effects of daily headaches in adolescents.

Don’t Let Cavities Keep You from Winning the Gold!

sochi winter olympics In light of the recent Sochi XXII Olympic Winter Games, a report by researchers at the University College London revealed that professional athletes that competed in the 2012 Olympics in London had very poor levels of oral health. Their oral health problems were bad enough that they had a negative effect on sports performance. 

The team of researchers looked at oral health check-up results of over 300 athletes and also interviewed them.  Over half of the athletes, representing sports like track, boxing, and hockey, had tooth decay.  More than 75% had gingivitis and 15% were starting to show signs of periodontitis.  About half of the athletes reported that these oral health problems were bothersome.  Furthermore, around 20% of them reported that poor oral health was negatively impacting their training and athletic performance.   In fact, 9% of the athletes had never even been to a dentist before.

In order to conceptualize these staggering statistics, Professor Needleman of the University College London Eastman Dental Institute speculates that high sugar sports drinks, gels, and snacks with a high carbohydrate content.  Consuming both high sugar and high carbohydrate foods and drinks without frequent brushing contributes to cavity formation and other oral health problems.

Needleman was quoted as saying, “Oral health is important for well-being and successful elite sporting performance.  It is amazing that many professional athletes — people who dedicate a huge amount of time and energy to honing their physical abilities — do not have sufficient support for their oral-health needs, even though this negatively impacts on their training and performance.”

Again, we see that poor oral health can affect all aspects of a person's life even as an Olympic athlete.  Easily treatable ailments like dental cavities should not keep an athlete from performing to his or her best potential.

Tooth Fairy's Generosity Growing Over the Years

According to a poll from insurer Delta Dental, the average gift for a displaced tooth rose last year to $3.50, up from $2.42 in 2012. Like with the regular stock market investments, the Tooth Fairy can pay off big if you get in early. First-time tooth losers earned more than they did for other teeth in 59 percent of homes. Kids got an average of $4.51for their first tooth, a 29.2 percent increase from last year.

Besides, every Fairy is different, some can leave really special gifts under your pillow, like toys, gum or a lovely hand-written note. Here is what some kids find under their teeth:

  • For our family, she leaves $1 if Mom or Dad pull the tooth out for the child," shares Jacy Cheney of Washington. "If they pull it out themselves, or it falls out on its own, then it's $2."
  • "The tooth fairy always leave $1, a personal note (written with my opposite hand), a tooth brush and fairy dust!" offers Erika Deady-Wohlers of tutupourmondeux.com.
  • "The tooth fairy leaves $2 per tooth and $5 per molar," reveals Mary Anschutz. "However, if the tooth fairy is so busy that he or she cannot make it, i.e., she forgets, then the amount gets doubled."

Hi-Chew - Can it Chew Away Our Enamel?

hi-chew candyYou have probably heard of Hi-Chew candy, especially if you are a parent and live in Wellesley or MetroWest area. This caramel candy became a favorite snack for a lot of teenagers, you can find it in any 7-Eleven store. As a parent, that makes me concerned with the impact this fad can have on our kids' health. So I did a little research.

Turns out, Hi-Chew company has been on the market in Japan for more than 80 years, and now is extremely popular in the local Asian markets (China, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand). There are over 100 flavors of Hi-Chew candy created, it clams to be the most delicious chewing gym that/candy that dissolves in your mouth, like Starburst. According to Swellesley Report, the candy, described by some as a tastier and less plasticky version of Starbursts, is chewy — as the name implies — and features a colorful and  flavorful goo in the middle of a firmer white exterior. You didn’t want to hear this, but it has been described as “crack for kids,” according to one woman who passed along this comment from a 7th grader.
The ingredients, however, don't look too good to me:

A serving of the candy has both 31 grams of sugar and acids (Citric and DL-Malic acids), which is an alarming fact. According to the article in the magazine of Academy of General Dentistry, What many people don’t know is that Citric acid —which is used as flavor enhancer and preservative — can severely damage teeth and cause significant erosion. The amount of sugar the candy contains can be detrimental to the teeth. They become even more vulnerable due to the sticky consistency of the candy - it stays on the surface of the teeth!

Although it's hard to persuade your teens to be careful with the candy that is manufactured to be sweet, juicy and somewhat addicting, you, as a parent, have to make sure they understand that indulging in this fad might cause a few new cavities.

Uncovering the Past: Bacteria Withstanding the Test of Time

ANCIENT TEETH Recently, a team of researched have discovered well-preserved oral bacteria on skeletons around 1,000 years old! What secrets do these remains hold?

The scientists found that dental plaque was what kept the bacteria and particles of food on the teeth in tact, which allowed the research team to look further into what oral pathogens were present in the past. They found that even with the drastic changes in diet and hygiene (we hope!), the ancient human cavity is the home to a variety of pathogens and bacteria similar to the ones found today.

What’s even more exciting was that the ancient human oral microbiome found contained the basic line of antibiotic resistance, which is more than eight centuries before the invention of therapeutic antibiotics in the 1940s! The scientists also uncovered dietary DNA from the dental plaque found, which give the researchers a window into the types of vegetables and fruits consumed.

Although these were exciting finds for the research team, the scientists have a long road ahead of them. Gaining a wealth of data is always an exciting event, but it will be a challenge for the researchers to piece together and identify the genetic sequences that came forth from the ancient oral microbiome they discovered.

These findings can truly be a great step forward towards a better understanding of the evolution of the human oral microbiome and the beginnings of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease affects more than 10% of the world population and has been associated with several systemic diseases including pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease and even type II diabetes. Through analyzing the human oral microbiome, scientists can track the progression of bacteria, paving new ways to prevent periodontal disease and contain bacterial production within the oral cavity.

Good Oral Health Starts with Primary Teeth

A lifetime of good oral health begins at an early age with the formation of “baby teeth!” As a newborn, the crowns of primary teeth are present, yet hidden from view. All 20 primary teeth, which erupt through the gums typically by the age of three, are extremely significant.

During this teething stage, it can be painful and distressing for your child. To alleviate some of the pain, offer your child a cold washcloth, or cold foods such as applesauce. The importance of primary teeth is often overlooked due to the fact that they will eventually fall out and be replaced by permanent teeth.

Primary teeth not only help children to chew food and communicate, but they also help guide permanent teeth into position. According to the American Dental Association, they are key in the development of the oral cavity and facial muscles. Primary teeth can decay from the first moment they are visible within the mouth. It is important to take care of your child’s primary teeth because if they are to decay due to insufficient care, permanent teeth can become infected and damaged from underneath them. When a primary tooth decays, the permanent teeth can shift into the empty space and alter the placement of other permanent teeth. Establishing good oral hygiene is essential as soon as your child is born.

Take preventative measure to ensure your child’s primary teeth are healthy!

  • Schedule your child’s first dental visit shortly after the presence of their first primary tooth
  • Clean your child’s gums after feeding even before primary teeth arrive
  • When primary teeth arrive, brush your child’s teeth twice a day with a toothbrush and toothpaste, making sure to also brush the gum line
  • Eliminate bad habits such as thumb sucking
  • Most importantly, encourage your child to develop good oral health by making them excited to brush every day!

Does the Toothpaste Expire?

toothpaste brushSometimes we keep things in the bathroom cabinet for years. Do you ever wonder if your toothpaste expired? If it is, do you throw it away?

Using expired toothpaste is not dangerous, says Dr. Joel H. Berg, chairman of pediatric dentistry at the University of Washington in Seattle and a representative of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

You might be surprised to find out that ADA requires that any toothpaste containing fluoride carries a expiration date. Typically, it's two years after the manufacture date. Pass that time the toothpaste looses its effectiveness, because the fluoride in the toothpaste becomes less effective as it does not do a good job binding to tooth enamel and hardening it against the acid that causes cavities. Ingredients may separate, including the flavoring, so it can become quite unpleasant to brush your teeth with that toothpaste.

When you got a tube of old toothpaste, you can toss it or use it at places outside of your mouth:

Clean the bathroom sink – Toothpaste contains tiny, natural abrasives, such as silica that work great on shining up your sink, including the faucet.

Remove odor from hands – The same ingredient that freshens your breath will also remove unpleasant odors from your hands. Just use it that same way you would use hand soap.

Remove crayon marks from walls – The mark of every home with a toddler, crayons on the wall. No problem, just squirt a little toothpaste on the walls and scrub with a brush or micro-fiber cloth. Viola – gone.

Clean a clothes iron – To clean that gummy residue that occasionally builds up on your iron, just scrub it with some toothpaste. Those little abrasives come in handy again. Just make sure to do this on a cool iron.

Remove scuffs from leather shoes – Out of shoe polish right before the big date? No problem, just grab your toothpaste, put a dab on your shoes.  Rub with a soft cloth then remove with a damp cloth. Your shoes will look brand new.

A Cup of Coffee and a Beautiful Smile

women-drinking-coffeeDrinking a hot cup of coffee in the morning is a daily ritual for many.  In fact, many people see caffeine intake as a necessity for proper functioning and alertness at work or at school.  According to the National Coffee Association, a whopping 83% of Americans have reported that they drink coffee.

Although this tasty drink may help us power through a 6 AM commute, it is important to be aware of the negative effects of frequent coffee intake on oral health.  The porous enamel of our teeth quickly absorbs the liquid and it ultimately causes staining.  If untreated, the dark drink can cause permanent yellowing.  Furthermore, coffee is considered an acidic drink.  Thus, it slowly wears down enamel and contributes to tooth decay.

Another negative side of effect of long term coffee drinking is bad breath and dry mouth.  Caffeine slows saliva production in the mouth.  Without saliva, we are unable to effectively wash away and kill bacteria that lead to plaque build-up.  As a result, the growth of bacteria causes a foul smell in the mouth.

However, there is hope for avid coffee drinkers out there.  Here are some tips to combat some of the negative effects of coffee:

  • Rinse with water following every cup of coffee
  • Limit your overall intake of coffee
  • Drink coffee through a straw if possible (like when you’re drinking iced coffee)
  • Do not let coffee sit in your mouth longer than necessary
  • Drink coffee at set times rather than constantly sipping it throughout the day
  • Always brush and floss
  • Adding cream to lighten the color of your coffee will not decrease its staining properties

Ancient Dental Problems

neanderthal-jaws-(2)Fossil evidence has shown that our Neanderthal ancestors suffered from many of the same dental problems that afflict us today including bad breath (halitosis) and caries.

Skeletal fossil remains dated about 15,000 years old found in a town in Morocco have given us insight into the prehistoric hunter-gatherer diets and their resulting oral health problems.  A study by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that a staggering 51% of the teeth found had cavities and abscesses.  Furthermore, evidence has shown us a glimpse of their distinct diet of acorns, pine nuts, and fermentable fruits.  Just like the formation of any other cavity, researchers predict that bacteria broke down carbohydrate rich foods left on teeth.  Ultimately, these bacteria would release harmful acids that cause enamel degradation characteristic of caries.

Another Neanderthal fossil specimen found in France dated an astounding 175,000 years ago was also found to have severe abscesses that would have prevented her from eating properly.  The significance of this particular finding was that it showed that Neanderthals must have helped one another eat and gain nutrients.  One researcher hypothesizes that a peer must have chewed up food for this specimen and fed her in order for her to survive well into her 40s.

Interestingly, both accounts show that many of the dental problems people face today were also the same problems our ancient ancestors faced.

Decade-old ADA Oral Care Guidelines Overturn

children dentist smile ada guidelinesAs the National Children'd Dental Health month is in full swing, new American Dental Association suggests parents using fluoride toothpaste for children as soon as their teeth come in.

Parents should use a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste to brush baby teeth twice daily as soon as they erupt, instead of waiting until children are older. That advice overturns the A.D.A.’s decades-old recommendation to start using a pea-size amount at 24 months. Once children are 3 to 6 years old, then the amount should be increased to a pea-size dollop, the updated guidelines say.

This change comes after a systematic review of 17 studies published in The Journal of the American Dental Association this month. It proves that fluoride toothpaste is effective in controlling tooth decay and that “the appropriate amount” should be used “by all children regardless of age.”

Dr. Jonathan Shenkin, a spokesman for the A.D.A. and a pediatric dentist in Augusta, Me says that only a tiny amount of toothpaste should be smeared on the brush since some youngsters are likely to ingest some of the fluoride. An early start is crucial, he mentioned, because children with dental decay are at greater risk of developing cavities as adults. “By starting earlier, we can effectively reduce a lifetime of disease for a lot of kids.”

The new A.D.A. guidelines stress that children should spit out toothpaste as soon as they are able, but not being able to spit does not preclude the use of a rice-grain-size bit of fluoride toothpaste. Dr. Shenkin has had some 5-year-old patients “still not using a fluoride toothpaste because parents don’t think they can spit it out yet.” The goal is to have parents monitor the amount of toothpaste and to assist in brushing. Children generally cannot properly brush until they have the dexterity to tie their shoes.

Toothache No More: First Aid and Prevention

man toothacheToothaches occur when the extremely sensitive central portion of the tooth, called the pulp, becomes inflamed. This can happen for a variety of reasons: cavities, a blow to the tooth, or an infection of the gums. Read on for information on how to cure a toothache yourself or determine when it's time to go to the dentist.

[box] If you are hurting:[/box]

  • Take a painkiller. A recommended on the package dose of an over-the-counter painkiller will help to cut minor toothache. Tylenol, acetaminophen or ibuprofen (acetaminophen, if it is for a child age 2 or older) are among a few. Don't place aspirin or another painkiller directly against your gums, as it may burn your gum tissue.
  • Rinse with water. Salt water rinse is also recommended. Some of the bacteria that is causing pain will no longer linger in your mouth. A toothache caused by a blow to the tooth or a mild infection might go away on its own. To help it along, make a rinse with warm water and a spoonful of sea salt. When the salt dissolves, gargle the water in your mouth, making sure it splashes around the affected area. Repeat several times daily until the pain subsides.
  • Gently floss and brush. Removing particles of food stuck in between teeth might help relieve the pain. Make sure the floss goes up to your gums, gently move it back and forth across the tooth. If your ache is caused by gingivitis, brushing is one of the best ways to ease the pain. Brush your teeth for several minutes, concentrating on the painful area. Finish the cleaning by using mouthwash to rinse away dislodged particles.
  • Apply a cold compress. Fill a zip-lock bag with ice, cover it with a thin cloth and apply directly to the tooth or the cheek area. The lower temperature will diminish the pain. Do not apply an ice cube directly to the tooth as it may increase the pain, since the inflamed teeth are usually more sensitive to the temperature changes.
  • Numb the area (!). Get an over-the-counter tooth and gym numbing gel to relieve the throbbing for a few hours. Apply an OTC antiseptic containing benzocaine directly to the irritated tooth and gum. Benzocaine has been linked to a rare but serious, sometimes deadly, condition (methemoglobinemia) that decreases the amount of oxygen that the blood can carry. Don't use benzocaine in children younger than age 2 without supervision from a health care professional, because this age group has been the most affected. Never use more than the recommended dose of benzocaine.  
    • Apply clove oil. This is a home remedy that is said to numb the pain. Rub a few drops on the affected tooth several times daily until the ache goes away. Clove oil can be found at most drug stores.
    • Cotton ball with hard liquor. This time-worn home remedy is a useful trick when the ache is caused by a blow or a mild infection that will go away after a few days. Pour some whisky or vodka on a cotton ball and apply it to the affected tooth.
    • Teabag therapy. Place the tea bag in the microwave with water for 30 seconds. Then squeeze the water in it and bite the tea bag on the sore tooth. The way it is known to reduce swelling and relieve toothache.
    • Eat a lemon. Vitamin C in fruit is able to reduce the pain caused by a toothache.
    • Chew on garlic or shallots. Enzymes content in these two can help kill nasty germs in the mouth. So you will not only address a toothache but also eradicate germs, so double benefit!
    • Avoid sweet, spicy or hard-to-chew foods. Boiled eggs or vegetables are soft in texture and won't worsen your pain.

[box] Do I have to see a doctor?[/box]

If the toothache is caused by a major infection or tooth decay, it won't go away on its own. You should see a doctor or dentist if you experience the following symptoms along with the toothache. Don't worry, dentists these days take pride in making you feel comfortable and at easy while they take care of your dental problems.

  • Getting fever and chills. This could be a sign of a serious infection.
  • Discharge. You don't want to take the risk of the infection getting worse.
  • Pain gets worse and doesn't go away after 1-2 days. This can be cause by a cavity that is getting worse with every meal. In any case, this is a sign that you have to make an appointment with a doctor.
  • Trouble swallowing or breathing. The answer is - you have to get professional dental help.
  • The pain is in the wisdom tooth. Sometimes wisdom teeth grow at an angle that crowds other teeth in the mouth and need to be extracted or otherwise taken care of.

[box] Why is this happening to me?[/box]

There are numerous reasons why you have a toothache or sometimes a headache, associated with it. Most of the time, cracked teeth, cavities, exposed roots and nerves cause these issues. In rare cases, the cause of a toothache could be more serious. Infections in the ears and sinuses and even heart disease can result in infections that make your tooth or mouth hurt. However, the most common cause of toothaches in patients today is a simple dental cavity. Among the other few reasons are: poor dental hygiene, gum sensitivity, incorrect brushing techniques (too aggressive), etc.

[box] I don't want any toothache, thank you very much![/box]

  • Develop/maintain good oral hygiene habits. Gently brush your teeth twice a day, in circular motions, at a 45 degree angle. Cover all the surfaces of your teeth. Change your toothbrush every 6 months, don't use one that has hard bristles. Floss before you brush, rinse with mouthwash for about a minute after you brush. 
  • See a dentist at least once a year. Early detection of problems = less pain. Visit a doctor if you've got a case of:
    • Red, tender or swollen gums
    • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
    • Gums that begin pulling away from your teeth
    • Loose permanent teeth
    • Changes in the way your top and bottom teeth align with each other
    • Unusual sensitivity to hot and cold
    • Persistent bad breath or an unusual taste in your mouth
  • Enjoy desserts/coffee/tea/wine/soda responsibly and in moderation. After you do consume any of the above-mentioned, have a glass of water.
  • Don't use your teeth as a tool. Crushing ice in your mouth, using teeth as an bottle opener or scissors (ripping tags off and opening sealed bags) can result in a chipped or cracked tooth.
  • Use a straw if you drink soda. Carbonation and the sugar are not friendly towards tooth enamel, protect it by drinking through a straw.
  • Getting a mouth guard if necessary. Grinding your teeth caused by stress or anxiety can be helped by getting an over-the-counter mouth guard or a better fitted one at a dental office. You can as well introduce activities that help you relax and re-purpose the nervous energy to your regimen.

Candy That is Good for Your Teeth?

sweet tooth candyMicrobiologists in Berlin have concocted a sugar-free, probiotic mint candy that eliminates cavity-causing bacteria while promoting the growth of beneficial oral bacteria.

After we eat a meal, bad bacteria like Streptoccocus mutans,  in our mouths begin to break down the food particles (especially starches and sugars) while releasing harmful acids that cause tooth decay. 

Microbiologist Christine Lang and her team wanted to come up with a way to find the good oral bacteria that will fight and eliminate the bad bacteria that cause tooth decay.  The group of researchers isolated a healthy type of bacteria called Lactobacillus paracasei, which keeps the bad bacteria, Streptoccocus mutans, from sticking onto tooth enamel.  The mint candy the researchers have made acts like probiotics for your teeth and is comprised of heat-killed samples of these good, healthy bacteria.

Lang and her team administered the candy to a group of participants five times over a 1.5 day period.  Results showed that almost three-fourths of the participants that ate the candies had significantly lower levels of the bad bacteria, Streptoccocus mutans, than the control group.  Furthermore, the candy itself promotes saliva flow, which is an essential way the body can maintain good oral health.

The research team is still in its early stages of developing this product and hopes to conduct more long-term experiments in the future.

High-fluoride Toothpaste Benefits

braces teethWeather you are a teenager or an adult, wearing braces can leave unsightly white marks behind, which represent local tooth decay. According to new study from Sweden, high-fluoride toothpaste can help diminish these permanent effects braces can have on your teeth.  According to research, toothpaste with four times the regular amount of fluoride helped prevent about the third of the cases of chalky stains on the teeth of patients of 11-16 years old.  "To reduce this effect, several products are available on the market, but evidence of the effectiveness of the products is lacking," said Mikael Sonesson, lead author of the study and an orthodontist at Malmö University.

More than 400 kids at five dental practices who were scheduled to get braces, joined the focus group to see whether a high-fluoride toothpaste that patients could use at home would protect against the spots. The patients were randomly divided into two groups, with about half using a toothpaste containing 5,100 parts per million fluoride to use at home and the other half - a similar toothpaste that contained 1,450 ppm fluoride - the amount in most standard commercial brands.

All the youngsters had photos taken of their teeth before getting braces and after they were removed. The participants wore braces for an average of 1.8 years and received toothpaste supplies for the corresponding duration of time. Two clinicians who didn't know which group each kid belonged to,had used evaluated all the before-and-after photos to assess the presence and severity of white spots using a four-point scale.

After the appropriate analysis, the researchers found that about 45 percent of patients who brushed with regular toothpaste developed white spots, whereas only 34.6 percent of those who used the high-fluoride paste developed spots. That translates to about 32 percent fewer white spots in the high-fluoride group. The results didn't come unexpected, given previous research on the use of fluoride for preventing cavities, according to Nisreen Takulla, a dentist in the Boston area. "High-fluoride toothpastes are often prescribed for patients at a high risk of dental caries, to be used once a day instead of regular toothpaste, and topical fluorides have also been proven to be very effective for caries control," said Takulla. Other ways to get higher doses of fluoride include mouth rinses and gels applied to the teeth.

To avoid white spots and cavities when wearing braces, the study's authors recommend being extra careful with brushing and flossing and avoiding a high-carbohydrate diet, which can be one factor that promotes tooth decay. High-fluoride toothpastes should be used once a day in place of regular toothpaste and should not be swallowed; users also should not eat or drink for 30 minutes after brushing with such a toothpaste.

Also, the brushing thoroughly is just as important as using the right amount of fluoride. "Using the right technique to brush, and ensuring all surfaces of the teeth are cleaned, is as important (as the toothpaste used)," Takulla said. Don't forget to go for regular check-ups and cleaning, as well, to achieve the best results.

Celebrating National Children's Dental Health Month

pediatric kid dentist february The start of February signals the beginning of the National Children's Dental Health Month sponsored by the American Dental Association (ADA).  All month long and across the country, the ADA is raising awareness about the importance of good oral health habits in children.  This year, the ADA is promoting a campaign trying to urge children and teens to "Join the Super Smile Team!" and brush their teeth for two minutes a day, twice a day.

Developing proper oral hygiene habits at a young age is imperative for a lifetime of good oral health.  The ADA recommends that parents bring their children to see a dentist even before their very first birthday.

In celebration of National Children's Dental Health Month, here are some quick tips to keep your children's teeth healthy and free of cavities:

  • Choose healthy snacks like fruits, vegetables, and cheese instead of sugary soft drinks or candy
  • Children should have regular dental checkups, once every 6 months
  • Remember to brush and floss right before bedtime
  • Limit the time a child spends with a sippy cup.  Always having milk or juice in contact with a child's teeth can lead to tooth decay.
  • Make sure to teach your child to not swallow fluoride-containing toothpaste since it can lead to discoloration of teeth.

Cognitive Impairment Linked to Tooth Loss

possible mild cognitive impairmentWhile losing multiple teeth can definitely lead to some difficulty when it comes to chewing food, can it also mean other problems down the road?

Researchers from the Panel Study of Living Conditions of the Oldest Old in 2002 have found evidence that tooth loss can lead to a higher chance of developing cognitive impairment. The research involved 557 Swedish participants over the age of 77. The study demonstrated that regardless of sex, age, education level, or mental health, an individual who had a difficult time chewing was more likely to become cognitive impaired.

Studies show that the leading reason for tooth loss is gum disease. Men are more likely than women to have their tooth removed, and tooth loss becomes more prevalent over the age of 35.

But tooth loss and gum disease doesn’t just come by itself. Studies shown that 40% of patients have never received professional dental maintenance and most patients (60%) said that they either never or occasionally brush their teeth.

Beware of BPA: Found to Damage Tooth Enamel

girl looking in the mirrorThere has been much talk about the dangers of ingesting BPA through plastic sippy cups and even water bottles that we bring on the go. BPA, also known as bisphenol A, is a chemical found in hard plastics of food and drink containers and acts in a similar way to estrogen, and other hormones in the body.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had originally deemed BPA to be a safe substance, but recent studies have shown that this chemical has lead to disruption of normal hormone levels, possible brain and behavior problems in infants and young children, and an increased risk of cancer and heart problems.

Recently, researchers have tied enamel damage to early exposure to BPA. A team led by Ariane Berdal of the Universite Paris-Derot showed that rats that have been treated daily with low doses of BPA resulted in damaged enamel. The rats were observed during a 30-day development window where researchers exposed the rats to the doses of BPA. The earliest observations founds on the rats were white marks found on their incisors. On a macroscopic level, the teeth with white marks were found to have fragile and brittle BPA. On a microscopic level, the enamel showed a decreased level of crucial minerals, the teeth were more susceptible to cavities.

The damage found on the teeth of these rats is comparable to damaged tooth enamel found in 18% of children between the ages of 6 and 8. These researchers believe that enamel damage is another effect of BPA damage to the body. It is important to check products for a “BPA-free” label before they are bought. While the FDA has cracked down on plastics containing, be cautious when buying baby bottles, sippy cups, baby formula cans, and other products for young children. Here are some of the potential changes and problems that have been associated with menopause:

 

Dry mouth: Because of the hormone fluctuations that occur during the time of menopause, the decreased levels of estrogen can lead to mouth dryness. Eating Disorders and Their Effect On Oral Health

Eating disorders continue to be a pressing issue in our nation. According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD), up to 24 million people of all ages and gender suffer from an eating disorder (anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder) in the U.S. The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) explains that eating disorders usually involved extreme attitudes and emotions towards weight and food issues. This disorder can ultimately have a grave impact on health, productivity and relationships. While most people know that eating disorders affect the individuals’ body, including their bones as well as their heart, these disorders also have detrimental consequences on teeth.

 

Without sufficient nutrition, gums and other soft tissue that are in the mouth may have a greater tendency to bleed. The glands that are responsible for the production of saliva may become inflamed, leading to chronic dry mouth. The American Dental Association (ADA) notes that tooth surfaces are in danger during the course of the disease when people decide to clear the contents of their stomach through their mouth. The teeth are then exposed to harsh gastric acids that can wear down teeth, leaving them thin and translucent. Teeth will become brittle and will be more susceptible to chipping.

 

The ADA also provides some treatment options to ease oral health consequences of eating disorders. Patients who purge by vomiting are advised to rinse with baking soda to neutralize the harmful effects of stomach acid. Are toothbrushes actually clean?

Researchers at England’s University of Manchester have looked into the various kinds of germs found in bacteria, and they found that toothbrushes are crawling with them! They discovered that a toothbrush could harbor more than 100 million bacteria, with the likes of diarrhea-causing E. coli and skin-infecting staphylococci bacteria. This may sound completely unsanitary, but wait! The mouth isn't the cleanest place to begin with. There are hundreds of microorganisms in the mouth on a daily basis. Medical professionals note that this is perfectly normal and it is not something to sweat over. But what individuals need to worry about is when there is an unhealthy balance of bacteria in the mouth. Many people forget that the plaque that develops inside the mouth (if proper brushing is not taking place) is, in fact, bacteria. Toothbrushes are continuously introduced to bacteria every time it is placed into the mouth.

 

So if there are constantly bacteria on toothbrushes, can they make people sick? Researchers think that it’s not likely. Considering there are already bacteria in the mouth, the body’s natural defenses make it difficult for an infection to occur just from brushing teeth. However, one should not take the body’s ability to defend itself for granted. There are still ways to keep fewer bacteria from entering the mouth. In many homes the bathroom sink is in close vicinity to the toilet. But that should not be the excuse for placing toothbrushes near where flushing occurs! Every time the toilet flushes, it sends sprays of bacteria into the air. Try to place toothbrushes as far as possible from the toilet, giving bacteria less of a chance in getting into the mouth.

 

Bacteria love moist environments and it is important that the brush dries through and through between each brushing. Try to avoid covers that enclose the brush, which would leave the toothbrush moist and bacteria-friendly. It is also a good idea to keep the toothbrush upright in a holder, instead of lying it down. Also, no matter how clean your sister or any of your other members of your family, don’t ever use each other’s brushes. Don’t even place toothbrushes in the same cup! Whenever toothbrushes come in contact with each other, they can easily exchange bacteria.

I’m pregnant! But what about oral health?

During pregnancy, women tend to look towards an overall healthier way of living. Many primarily seek out medical professionals that can keep them on track with a good diet and care for the coming baby. However, many expecting mothers tend to put oral health on the back burner during pregnancy.

 

It is highly recommended that good oral health be maintained before, during and after pregnancy. Pregnancy is known to kick start hormonal changes that can increase the risk of gum disease, which can in turn affect the coming baby. Because dental procedures have the potential of influencing the baby’s growth and development, it is recommended that mothers should avoid dental treatments during critical times for the baby, notably the first trimester and second half of the third trimester. This also means that expecting mothers should be extra careful in keeping up with good oral hygiene during these critical stages of pregnancy.

Bleeding Gums: What Can This Mean?

When the topic of oral health is brought up, the focus is usually placed on teeth and the possibility of getting cavities. However, there is definitely more to the mouth! Gums can be a good indicator of oral health as well as one’s overall health! Individuals may find that after brushing their gums may look red and they may even start bleeding. Many tend to dismiss these signs and just attribute them to good and thorough brushing. But wait! This is not the case.

First things first, there is a misconception that to get clean teeth, brushing needs to be done vigorously to get all the grime off. While afterwards your teeth may feel clean, your gums are not too pleased.

Remember: gums are made of soft tissue and when aggravated they can become sore and red. When choosing a toothbrush, it is important to opt for soft nylon bristle with blunt ends. Stores may carry brushes with medium or hard bristles; however they may damage the enamel on teeth and can cause swollen gums. The idea of being gentle goes the same for flossing. The goal of flossing is to remove leftover food and plaque stuck between teeth; it does not mean these particles need to be forcefully taken out. It is important to refrain from forcing the floss in between teeth; instead, carefully slide the floss up and down, following the curve of each tooth.

Aside from proper brushing and flossing, bleeding gums is actually a sign of gum disease. When proper dental hygiene is not practiced, bacteria takes over and plaque starts forming. The same bacteria that jumpstarts the formation of cavities as makes gums irritated and swollen. Bleeding gums is an early sign of gum disease, also know as gingivitis, and symptoms can be reversed with good oral hygiene. But if these symptoms are ignored, gingivitis can get worse, eventually leading to tooth loss. Be on the lookout for these symptoms:

- deep pockets between teeth and gums
- changes in the way teeth come together
- gums that bleed during/after toothbrushing
- shifting teeth
- red, swollen, tender gums

Stick with Mussels: they can help strengthen and rebuild teeth!

Good news for all you seafood lovers out there. The Journal ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces have found something very special about mussels’ adhesive nature. Not only does it let these creatures hold fast to rocks in the ocean, researchers have found that they also can be beneficial for teeth.

Quan-Li Li, Chun Hung Chu, and other researchers noted that there are three out of four people who have teeth sensitive to hot, cold, sweet or sour foods and drinks. These scientists were determined to look for ways to rebuild enamel and dentin, which are important factors that determine tooth sensitivity. They found that mussel’s natural adhesive, which allows them to attach to rocks, can be a synthetic substance used to reform the eroded enamel and dentin. They worked under the hypothesis that the sticky substance in mussels would have the ability to keep essential minerals in contact with dentin long enough for reformation to occur.

In 2011, an international team of scientists that mussel’s adhesive proved to be a successful alternative to other coatings used in teeth. While most coatings tend to make teeth weak and brittle over time, the synthetic coating created from mussel adhesive had the ability to heal itself when damaged. The researchers also found that minerals in other coatings were only able to reform enamel while the synthetic adhesive was able to reform both enamel and dentin. Phil Messersmith of Northwestern University have taken into account mussels’ incredible adhesive properties and have created a polymer used in coating that can mend tears in just a matter of minutes!

While these scientists continue to incorporate this newfound adhesive to the clinical setting, there are still ways to battle sensitive teeth. Doctors continue to recommend that individuals practice good oral hygiene (brushing twice a day and making sure to floss carefully). Those with sensitive teeth can also be extra careful when consuming acidic foods such as juices, vinegar in salad dressings and soft drinks. A good way to protect teeth is to rinse the mouth with water after consuming these foods. Teeth grinding can also leave teeth susceptible to sensitivity; ask the dentist about a mouth guard for nighttime use to prevent teeth grinding.

Even if an individual takes one to the mouth and ends up with a missing tooth, a dentist is able to save the tooth. Cracks and chips in tooth can be repaired through using tooth-colored materials that are just as strong as the original tooth. Although dentists can easily come to the rescue, these injuries can turn out to be pretty serious and procedures are not a small cost. Dentists have strongly recommended the use of mouth guards for football players. With this movement, mouth guards have been able to prevent about 200,000 injuries annually.

There are various means of protection when playing a sport. Here are two types of protection that are recommended:

Mouth guards: like it was previously mentioned, mouth guards have done a great job in protecting sports players. They can prevent injury to one’s teeth, tongue and lips. Dentists tend to recommend athletes to get a custom-fit mouth guard; however, individuals can opt for ready-made mouth guards that can be found in sporting-goods stores.

Helmets
: people usually do not think that protecting their head means protecting their teeth as well. As a matter of fact, helmets are very effective in protecting both the head and the oral cavity in high speed and impact sports. These sports usually include hockey, football, bike riding, and skating. It is important to note that there are helmets specially made for a certain sport. When purchasing a helmet, be sure to check and see if the helmet fits correctly.

General and Oral Health Benefits of Breastfeeding

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued a policy statement back in 2012 stating that breastfeeding and the use of human milk have show to reduce health risks for infants, children, and mothers, also including advantages such as developmental, nutritional, immunological, and psychological benefits. The APP exclaims that breast milk is the best nutrient source for babies. It contains immunological agents, including secretory immunoglobulin (g) A and IgG, along with anti-inflammatory properties that act as protection for the infant’s immune system.

Researchers found that compared to formula-fed children, children who were breast-fed had a lower risk of diarrhea by coating intestinal lining and killing dangerous pathogens that leave babies prone to infection. Breast milk also combats severe lower respiratory infections, including pneumonia and virus bronchiolitis; a child’s risk of developing asthma is also reduced. The immunological and anti-inflammatory properties of breast milk controls to onset of infection and illnesses, reducing sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Breastfed-children are also less likely to develop obesity, which is a prevalent disease that 12.5 million children and teens suffer from today. Breastfeeding helps protect against obesity by improving self-regulation of energy intake and recognizing when one is full. On top of these general health benefits, breast-fed children showed better occlusion, where their top and bottom teeth came together more favorably.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) suggests that parents should clean infants’ gums even if they do not have teeth. Parents can use a soft washcloth to clean the gums. Healthy Lifestyle = Good Oral Health!

A study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the German Institute of Human Nutrition reported that adult men and women who never smoked, kept a healthy diet, maintained physical activity, and had a body mass index (BMI) under 30 were 78% less likely to develop chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and stroke. Those who stuck it out with only one of these four healthy lifestyle factors lowered their chronic disease risk by almost 50%, and risk levels decreased as individuals adapted more of these healthy behaviors.

So how does this connect to dentistry and oral health? Well, when looking these healthy factors from the flip side, poor eating habits, tobacco use, and excess body weight have strong correlations with oral health, especially periodontal disease, along with other health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

The participants in the study ranged from ages 35-65 and at the start of the study, each individual’s weight and height were measured. Participant’s health history, physical activity and eating habits were also recorded. They were tracked for almost 8 years and their health was tracked throughout that time. Out of the participants that actively exhibited all four healthy behaviors, they had a 93% reduced risk for diabetes, 81% reduced risk for heart disease, 50% reduced risk for stroke, and 36% reduced risk for cancer.

Dentists continue to back up the importance of eating healthy, getting enough physical activity, and limiting tobacco use. Dental research continues to document oral health benefits that come with tobacco cessation, leading a healthy diet, and maintaining a healthy weight. Dentists continue to push for less frequent exposure to soft drinks and beverages with a high sugar content, which can lead to both tooth decay and an unhealthy increase in body mass index.

I bet everyone is so excited with July 4th right around the corner. Now that the Summer is here I know everyone has vacations, desserts, beaches, and other fun things on their mind.  If not, trust me, we will find plenty of things for you to enjoy whether it may be a cozy evening indoors or an active day outdoors. NEEDHAM - The Fireworks have been promised to be better than ever and our Grand Parade will feature special guests and new musical groups.   The Fireworks will be at Memorial Park on Wednesday evening, July 3rd.   The evening will begin with food, ponyrides, face painting and other family entertainment followed byFireworks.  The Grand Parade will start at 9 am on Thursday, July 4th.   After the Parade on Thursday there will be more food, a flea market, an old fashioned baseball game, children’s games and much more!

Sweet (But-Teeth Friendly) Desserts

It’s summer time! The school year is finally winding down, and we are excited to make are way down to the beach and enjoy some time out in the sun. Summer also brings ice cream, popsicles, cotton candy, and a whole bunch of food that may be delicious, but are also definitely not doing your teeth a favor.

Every grocery store is bound to have a section of an aisle dedicated to frozen desserts, which can range from strawberry ice cream to jolly rancher-flavored popsicles. Your taste buds may think it’s an excellent idea to grab a few on the go, but your teeth will beg to differ. Popsicles tend to have high sugar content, which will leave teeth susceptible to cavities and tooth decay. These frozen sweets also contain artificial coloring dye, which has been shown to contain carcinogens and maybe contribute Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Instead of getting a pack of popsicles from the grocery store, here are some healthy and enjoyable alternatives.

Smoothies: Milk shakes tend to be a summer favorite after a long soccer practice. While they do contain dairy, which is wonderful for teeth, they also contain lots of sugar, which is wonderful for bacteria in the mouth, not so much for teeth. Bacteria love feeding on sugary residue left in the mouth, and definitely won’t hold back when they are offered a ton from milk shakes. Instead of making a trip to the local diner, start the blender and add in some low-fat milk, yogurt, bananas, strawberries, and blueberries. A yummy smoothie will result, chock full of calcium, antioxidants, and vitamins. Homemade smoothies will allow you to control the amount of sugar that goes into the drink, and sweet and healthy fruit will do just the trick! Yogurt Pops: Yogurt, cheese, milk and other dairy products are great saliva generators, protecting teeth from tooth decay. The Link Between Periodontal Disease and Diabetes

26 million adults are known to be affected by diabetes. Statistics show that 1 out of 10 healthcare dollars are spent on diabetes. The link between periodontal disease and diabetes has been extensively studied over the past 50 years. There is strong evidence that diabetes is a risk factor for periodontitis and gingivitis. A study dating back to more than 30 years ago has already shown that children suffering from type 1 diabetes had a higher prevalence of gingival inflammation. Ervasti et al. examined patients with gingival bleeding and determined that there was greater amount of bleeding in patients with poorly controlled diabetes when compared to subjects that do not have diabetes and subjects with well-controlled diabetes. Research has also shown that types with type 2 diabetes also tend to have more gingival inflammation than the control group in the study.

Studies also show that the risk of developing periodontitis is increased when one has diabetes. Teenagers with type 1 diabetes have been found to be five times more likely to develop periodontitis. Research also supports the idea that there may be more bone loss linked to adults with diabetes. Subjects suffering from type 2 diabetes are three times more likely to develop periodontitis compared to subjects without diabetes.

Doctors were able to pinpoint the root cause of this relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease. There is a protein known as the c-reactive protein (CRP), which is found in the blood stream. CRP levels rise with inflammation of blood vessels, which has been linked to type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Researchers have also shown that CRP is continuously produced in the presence of periodontal diseases. It is important to note that an individual cannot keep diabetes under control if he or she is also suffering from periodontal disease. It is absolutely crucial that diabetic patients maintain good oral health to keep CRP at bay.

Can playing a musical instrument effect oral health?

It has been widely accepted that playing a musical instrument can increase and nourish intelligence in children, but playing a used instrument can be a health risk as well.

General Dentistry published a clinical study that revealed that woodwind and brass instruments that have been previously used were found to be ridden with various bacteria and fungi some that have been linked to serious infectious and allergic diseases, which can further lead to conditions such as mouth breathing. Click here to read more about mouth breathing. Children who are involved with their school band or orchestra typically rent their instrument for over the course of the year. These instruments have already been played by other students and without proper cleaning, bacteria an fungi have been indubitably thriving in the instrument. The same growth has been seen in dentures, athletic mouth guards, and tooth brushes.

In the clinical study, 117 instrumental pieces, including mouthpieces, internal chambers, and cases were tested on 13 previously used instruments. There were 442 different bacteria found on the instruments, along with 58 molds and 19 yeasts. Mold can lead to the increased likelihood of developing asthma, while yeasts found on the instruments can lead to skin infections around the mouth and lips. These bacteria, fungi, mold, and yeast that are presence on these instruments are highly resistant to the antibiotics that are normally prescribed, which highlights the importance of sterilizing instruments that have been previously played. It is essential to wipe areas that come in contact with the skin and mouth frequently. Instruments should be cleaned on a regular basis with cleaning cloths and solution.

The Importance for Teens to Balance a Fast-Paced Life and Oral Health

Once that alarm starts going off in the morning, teens are on a jam-packed schedule, shuffling through classes, extracurricular activities, and sometimes even part-time jobs. In order to keep up with the pace, teens often make a grab for quick meals in form of carbonated beverages and “nutrition bars” to keep them on edge and alert for all of their obligations; however, this kind of lifestyle may leave teens with permanent damage to oral and overall health.

In a 2003 issue of General Dentistry, studies have shown that teens that constantly indulge in sugary drinks can result in premature loss of tooth enamel and the weakening of overall tooth structure. While research has deemed carbonated beverages and energy drinks detrimental for oral health, these sugary drinks can also affect overall bone growth in teens. Read more here. Adolescence is the known time period of optimal bone growth, when more nutrient-packed calories are necessary to fuel growing bodies and to strengthen teeth and bones. These calories tend to be counteracted when teens continue to take in high-carbohydrate foods, which are instead replacing healthy foods such as milk, vegetables, and fruits.

Reports have shown that these beverages are the main causes of increases cavities and obesity in teens today. Unfortunately, researchers expect obesity to remain a major issue as more pre-school-aged children continue to become more addicted to caffeine and sugar. The various acids found in sodas and energy drinks breakdown tooth enamel around cavity sealants and previously done restorations, which leads to more necessary dental treatment to prevent tooth loss.

Phosphoric acid in many carbonated drinks limits calcium absorption, influencing body density. By age 16, girls have acquired 90-96% of their bone mass, making adequate calcium intake extremely important. However, national statistics indicate that only 19% of girls ages 9-19 are receiving the recommended 1,3000 mg of calcium per day. The lack of calcium intake indubitably affects bone structure of the mouth, which can lead to complications such as periodontal bone loss.

While it is important for teens to work hard and strive to do their best, it is just as essential for them to watch what they consume and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Pacifiers:Do They Boost or Weaken Your Child’s Health?

Many parents have been taught that sharing utensils or sucking on pacifiers to clean them can help a child build immunity. The journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics has even published a study detailing the immunological benefits of adult saliva. However there has been much debate about whether parents should follow this rule of thumb.

The American Dental Association (ADA) was quick to follow up this study with their respond, explaining that this may not be a good idea. ADA noted that the adult saliva contains a whole host of microorganisms that may be harmful to a child health. The transfer of saliva may end up increasing a baby’s chance of developing tooth decay in the future. Dr. Jonathan Shenkin, who is a spokesperson for the ADA, points to Streptococcus mutans as a bacteria present in adult saliva that my end up doing some serious damage to teeth.

However, there are others that continue to support the American Academy of Pediatrics. While they understand the risks of being more susceptible to bacteria, proponents of adult saliva transfer believe that should not be the main concern at hand. It has been argued that certain adults may not even have these harmful microorganisms present in their oral cavity. What should be priority is parents’ responsibility to provide good oral hygiene for their child. These dentists argue that no matter what, babies will continue to be exposed to different harmful microorganisms, whether it Is from what they consume or touch throughout the day. The key to limiting the progression of child tooth decay is to keep up with proper oral care. Parents need to be reminded of the importance of proper brushing, rinsing, and flossing for their child. Dentists believe that this aspect of oral health takes precedent over staying away from microorganisms that can harm the child.

Safety and Infection Control at the Dentist

Recent news reports have come out regarding dental practice safety and infection control, notably, involving a Tulsa, Oklahoma practice. We want to take a moment and share what we do to ensure the safety of our patients. We take universal precautions in sterilization practices that are applied to everyone who comes through the doors of Wellesley Dental Group. Our top concern is in abiding by strict infection control guidelines for the health of our patients, team, and Drs.; “Do No Harm” is our mantra.

Every day, every hour, and every minute we adhere to a very strict regimen to disinfect and sterilize everything that comes into contact with our patients. We want to let you in on the behind-the-scenes processes that are as much a part of our routine as the teeth cleaning, crowns, and x-rays we do every day.

  • Hand washing
    • We wash our hands consistently, especially before and after interacting with any patients.
    • We follow the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Bloodborne Pathogens Standards.
  • Plastic barriers are placed on all surfaces that are potentially touched to prevent any cross contamination:
    • Before any patient enters, the operatory is cleaned with a medical grade disinfectant and all plastic barriers are changed. Disinfected surfaces include equipment and surfaces, such as x-ray units and countertops.
    • Masks and safety glasses are worn.
    • Gloves are worn at all times and are changed between every patient.
    • Sometimes numerous gloves are thrown out during particularly long procedures for a given patient. We go through boxes upon boxes of gloves every day.
    • All pillows, light handles, etc, are draped with protective covers.
  • All disposable instruments (needles, suction tips, etc) are disposed after one use. These instruments are disposed in puncture resistant biohazard containers.
  • Non-disposable instruments are sterilized in small, individual packages in our autoclave. The autoclaving process destroys all forms of microbial life.
    • Instruments (drills, filling and cleaning instruments, etc) are brought to the sterilization room
    • The instruments are scrubbed by hand and washed.
    • Steeped in a solution for 20 minutes as they undergo an ultrasonic bath
    • Dried and placed into special, small, individually wrapped packages
    • These packages are then autoclaved.
    • After the autoclaving, there is a color indicator on the package that changes, confirming that process was done correctly.

When it comes to knowing whether the autoclave works correctly every time, we don’t solely rely on the color indicator on the packages. Our autoclave is a brand-name, state of the art machine that blasts instruments with extreme heat and high, steam pressure in an airtight enclosure. Every week, to ensure it is working according to the manufacturer’s standards, we do a spore test.

  • We put a closed packet of spores into the autoclave
  • The packet undergoes the autoclaving process
  • The autoclaved packet is then sent to an independent lab for analysis.
  • To pass the test, all spores must be inactivated.

Keep your kids cavity free!

Sure, they may have baby teeth that will fall out soon enough; however, prioritizing good oral health practices in your children early on is important. Building good habits in your kids will positively influence their overall health for years to come. So what can you do now to help your child’s future?

  • Make sure they brush twice a day every day and start flossing early on so they get into the habit now. Plaque, a bacterial film, builds up and in between the teeth, so consistent removal is important. If plaque is left to sit, it can cause decay and gum problems.
  • Make an appointment for your child’s first visit if you haven’t yet. It’s a good idea to make an appointment as soon as the child’s first tooth comes in or no later than their first birthday.
  • Set a good example by prioritizing your own oral health and remember, the way in which you talk about the dentist will affect your child’s expectations of their own dental visits. By staying positive and sharing good experiences with your child, you will keep your child at ease. Going to a dentist is a positive thing and it’s great when children look forward to it. Ask you dental office if you can bring your child beforehand for a show and tell! Help your dentist build a lasting relationship with your child.
  • Watch what your child eats. Sugars don’t come solely from candy and juices. In fact, a recent study discovered that the food that causes the most cavities isn't sweet at all, crackers. Most crackers are highly processed foods and are a feasting ground for bacteria, which deteriorates tooth enamel. A better option for your children are whole grains, unprocessed foods and be sure to stay away from sticky foods, which can get caught between teeth and within the groves of the tooth surface.

 

Oral hygiene is an integral part of the day, like eating breakfast. Help your child set him/herself apart from the alarming number of children who have tooth decay. In fact, according to the CDC, 25% of children between the ages of 2-5 have tooth decay. With better oral health practices from the start, this can change.

Americans Have Bad Oral Health

The American Dental Association has just released a survery that shows Americans aren't up to par with their oral health. Overall, most scored low on the true/false survey. Many did not even know how often their teeth should be cleaned.

Nine out of ten adults between the ages of 20 and 64 have cavities in their teeth. Also, almost half of children between 2 and 11 years old have cavities in their baby teeth.

Some other statistics found from the survey include:

- 75% have no idea at what age they should take a child to the dentist for the first time. According to ADA recommendations, a child's first dentist visit should be within six months after the first tooth appears or before the child's first birthday.

- 65% of people think their toothbrush should be replaced twice a year, when it should be replaced every three months.
