Does My Tea or Coffee Really Need Sugar?

It's not a surprise that sugar is bad for our teeth, but it's sometimes hard to resist consuming each day. We are often asked, "would you like sugar in your coffee?" or "would you like sugar added to your tea?" This can lead to a spiral of adding one teaspoon of sugar to even three or four teaspoons for that perfect tasting cup of tea or coffee. It might sound like a small amount, but each day as you have your morning jump-start of caffeine it can add up and take a harmful toll on your teeth. The American Heart Association (AHA) states that the maximum amount of added sugars you should consume each day is 37.5 grams/9 teaspoons for men, and 25 grams/6 teaspoons for women. These numbers are quick to reach, for example, one can of coke contains a whopping 36 grams of sugar! According to a study conducted by Euromonitor in 2015, the United States is the #1 country that consumes the most sugar per person each day (126.4 grams). The impact of sugar on oral and overall health is significant, as sugar can increase the risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, and most widely known, tooth decay.

Reducing or cutting out adding sugar completely to your tea or coffee can be a great start to a healthier lifestyle. Natural sweetness such as xylitol have been found to help reduce the risk of tooth decay and can be a great alternative to sugar and artificial sweeteners.

Remember, your diet plays an important role in your dental and general health. Be sure to notice when food labels mention words such as sucrose, glucose, fructose, maltose, or corn syrup, for instance, as these are also masked terms for sugar.

Take a look at some tips to help reduce sugar in your daily diet:

Eat a healthy breakfast

Starting the day off with a healthy filling breakfast can give you the energy you need to get through the day and help you avoid snacking throughout the day on items that may contain a lot of sugar. Try picking out cereals that have no added sugar, and having tooth-friendly items including cheese, or yogurt. It's best not to consume sugary snacks throughout the day because frequency of sugar exposure is more detrimental for your teeth than the amount of sugar consumed. When we eat sugary and acidic foods, the pH of our mouths become lower and more acidic, which can put your teeth in a weakened state. When you do need a snack, be sure to choose healthy snack options.

Note that fat free does not equal sugar free
Some items are highlighted as healthy products because they are fat-free. However, fat-free items may still contain high amounts of sugar which can negatively impact your teeth. Be sure to look at the nutrition label when buying fat-free products to see how much sugar is in them.
Avoid sticky foods
Sticky foods such as candy, and even dried fruits can become trapped within teeth and harm your tooth enamel.

Love your Heart: American Heart Month

The heart is an amazing muscle, beating up to about 100,000 times a day and keeping us alive to spread love to those we encounter! That's why it's extremely important to keep your heart healthy and to be informed about heart disease. Each February, awareness about heart health is spread nationally in celebration of American Heart Month. What many may not know is that heart disease isn't just a disease that affects older adults. It can happen at any age, and there are many factors that can put you at risk. Here's what you need to know:

To start off on a positive note, heart disease can be prevented with healthy lifestyle choices. Sadly, about 1 in 4 deaths in the United States are a result of heart disease in both men and women. Many individuals may experience at least one of the top 3 risks for heart disease, which include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking.

So, what exactly is heart disease? Coronary heart disease (CHD) occurs when plaque accumulates overtime inside of the coronary arteries that normally help supply oxygenated blood to the heart. This buildup of plaque is also known as atherosclerosis. The plaque buildup is dangerous because they can eventually harden or even burst. If the plaque hardens, the blood flow to the heart is consequently reduced as the coronary artery walls narrow. If the plaque bursts, this can result in a blood clot that can also block blood flow from reaching the heart. Once there is less blood flow to the heart, a stroke or heart attack can happen. Pain in the chest, shoulders, jaw, arms, and neck can be a common sign of a heart attack. Your heart eventually becomes weaker over time with CHD, and could result in heart failure or irregular heart rhythms.

Brush Your Teeth, Your Heart Will Thank You

Who would have thought that your dentist would be telling you how to help prevent heart disease? It’s commonly known that smoking, a poor diet, lack of exercise, and an uncontrolled weight can impact your heart. However, did you know that brushing your teeth is linked with maintaining a healthy heart? Research published in Scotland revealed that brushing your teeth can lower your risk of experiencing a heart attack or other issues impacting your heart.

Heart disease is a serious problem that unfortunately impacts a lot of people. According to the American Heart Association, about 2,600 people in the United States die each day from a heart attack, heart failure, or stroke. The study looked at approximately 12,000 women and men and observed their oral health habits, daily exercise, and smoking habits. About 60% of the individuals reported seeing a dentist every 6 months, and approximately 70% reported brushing their teeth two times each day. Those who stated brushing their teeth less often were found to have a 70% increased risk of heart disease and had increased amounts of C-reactive protein and fibrinogen, which are found in the blood indicating inflammation. Inflammation is a significant finding related to poor oral hygiene and atherosclerosis (accumulation of fat substances around artery walls). Periodontal disease, which is a chronic condition impacting the gums and tissues around teeth, is a result of poor oral hygiene and adds to the inflammatory response. Some signs of periodontal disease include red and swollen gums, bleeding gums when eating or brushing and flossing, pus or infection around gums, poor taste in your mouth, and loose teeth.

The American Heart Association also conducted a recent study analyzing brushing frequency in 682 participants and the link to heart disease risk. Those who stated brushing their teeth less than two times a day for less than two minutes had a 3 times higher risk of developing heart disease than those brushing for the recommended two times a day for 2 minutes or more. More research is needed to determine whether or not the link is a cause and effect relationship.

Did you know that heart disease is the MAIN cause of death of both women and men in the United States? Heart disease is the reason behind 25% of deaths each year,  which is why the American Heart Association is working so hard to increase awareness during February, American Heart Month.

Although these statistics may seem scary, it's easy to prevent heart disease if you make healthy choices! For instance, use spices instead of salt to add flavor to your food, and prioritize physical exercise. Other health tips include scheduling regular visits with your doctor, eating healthy foods, avoiding smoking, and taking medication if needed. If you are obese or have diabetes, your risk for heart disease could increase.

Preventing heart disease involves taking care of your entire body, which includes your teeth! Excellent oral health is connected to a healthy heart, as proven by the link between bacteria from periodontal disease and heart disease.

So this month, make sure to not only prioritize your cardiovascular health, but also your dental health!

High Blood Sugar Increases Risk of Heart Disease

To be heart healthy, you not only need to pay attention to your habits, but also your diet!

According to a study published in the journal Nature, scientists discovered that cardiac arrhythmia, a condition that causes irregular heartbeats, is linked to a biological pathway activated by abnormally high levels of blood sugar. This finding explains why diabetes greatly increases the risk for heart disease.

The National Institutes of Health claims that diabetics are four times more likely to have heart disease, and the American Heart Association notes that about 65 percent of the death of diabetics are caused by heart disease or stroke. Therefore, if you have diabetes or high blood sugar levels, make sure to check on your heart health!

Fruit Juices and Smoothies Can Harm Your Teeth!

Now that it finally feels like spring with all the sunshine, you might think that it's a great time to enjoy some fresh fruit juices and smoothies. They appear to be great alternatives to soda, iced tea, or other sugary drinks. However, these beverages can be harmful for your teeth and actually contain a lot of sugar according to research recently published in the online journal BMJ Open.

While the American Heart Association (AHA) suggests consuming less than 3-4 teaspoons of sugar a day for children and less than 5 teaspoons of sugar for teens, the average sugar content of pure fruit juices was 2 teaspoons and 2.5 teaspoons for smoothies. Additionally, over 40% of these drinks have 4 teaspoons of sugar!

You might think that 100% fruit juice would be better, but its innocence is deceiving. Even the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends serving no juice to infants younger than 6 months old and no more than 4 to 6 ounces to children ranging from 1 to 6 years old. Fruit juices contain free sugars (glucose, fructose, sucrose, and table sugar added by the manufacturer, plus natural sugars such as honey, syrups, and fruit juice concentrates), which can cause tooth decay.

Therefore, some recommendations include:

  • not eating fruit in the form of juice
  • diluting fruit juice with water
  • limiting drinking fruit juice to 5 ounces per day
  • drinking water and milk

National Wear Red Day 2016 -Today!

Today, Friday, February 5, 2016 marks National Wear Red Day, which is the kick-start event for American Heart Month! 

Why wear red today? Well, by wearing red,  individuals can help raise awareness of cardiovascular disease and improve the health of our loved ones. National Wear Red Day is an annual tradition that was created to raise money and awareness about heart disease and stroke in women. Through educating others about this number one killer in our nation, we can help others live longer and healthier lives. Heart disease and stroke kill 1 in 3 women each year. Putting it into perspective, it kills approximately one woman every 80 seconds. However, the conditions of cardiovascular disease are 80% preventable!

The organization Go Red For Women advises women to schedule a Well-Woman Visit, a prevention check-up to review a woman’s overall health by measuring blood pressure, checking cholesterol levels and looking for signs of heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. They are also collecting donations to help fund research. If you're on social media, you can also use the hashtags, #GoRedWearRed and #WellWomenVisit. Through their initiative and research to healthy lifestyle changes that began in 2003, they've found that:

  • Almost 90% have made at least one healthy behavior change.
  • More than one-third has lost weight.
  • More than 50% have increased their exercise.
  • 6 out of 10 have changed their diets.
  • More than 40% have checked their cholesterol levels.
  • One third has talked with their doctors about developing heart health plans.
  • Today, nearly 300 fewer women die from heart disease and stroke each day
  • Death in women has decreased by more than 30 percent over the past 10 years.

Save Your Heart: American Heart Month

All throughout February we're celebrating American Heart Month! This national awareness month provides WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease, and the American Heart Association the opportunity to make others across the world aware about cardiovascular disease. These organizations help organize, educate, and fund medical research on cardiovascular disease and its prevention.

Cardiovascular disease, including heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure, is the NUMBER ONE killer of both women and men in the United States. So much so that it's responsible for one out of every three deaths each year. Over 6 million American women are impacted by heart disease, while another 37 million women are at risk of developing heart disease.

This annual campaign was initiated in 1964 by the American Heart Association and has continued to heighten awareness across the nation. However, the number of individuals impacted by cardiovascular disease is predicted to grow more than 23.6 million by the year 2030. Unfortunately, nearly half of all Americans have at least one major risk factor, but are unaware of it. It's important to also know the warning signs, including chest discomfort, shortness of breath, or sudden lack of responsiveness. To spot a stroke, think F.A.S.T: Face drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty, time to call the police.

Becoming aware of the risk factors of cardiovascular disease, for instance obesity and diabetes, is key to understanding what needs to be done to lower your risk. Eating a healthy diet, not smoking, exercising, and picking up other positive health habits will help keep your heart pumping!

President Obama wrote, “We have lost devoted mothers and fathers, loved siblings, and cherished friends to this devastating epidemic. During American Heart Month, as we honor their memories, let us recommit to improving our heart health and continuing the fight against this deadly disease, for ourselves and our families.”

Women's Heart Health: National Wear Red Day

Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States? It's true. It is commonly referred to as the “Silent Killer,” due to its lack of concrete symptoms. Every year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease, or approximately 600,000 Americans. Sponsored by the American Heart Association, February marks American Heart Month.

Each year, the first Friday in February is typically National Wear Red Day in support of the fight against heart disease in women. Heart disease causes one in three women's deaths every year, which is about one woman every minute! National Wear Red Day is all about making healthy changes and raising awareness about women and heart disease. Encourage everyone in the community to wear red today, February 6, 2015!

Dating all the way back to 2003, National Wear Red Day has made a positive difference in the lives of many women. Currently, 34% fewer women die from heart disease, 90% have made at least one healthy behavior change, over 50% have increased their exercise, 6 out of 10 have changed their diets, 15% have quit smoking, and 23% more Americans are aware that heart disease is the number one cause of death.

American Heart Month is the perfect time to check in with health professionals, including the dentist! Proper oral care decreases risk of cardiovascular disease. Many studies have shown a link between common oral health problems and cardiovascular disease. Poor oral health and unhealthy diets can cause periodontal disease, which some studies suggest increases the risk of heart disease. It is suggested that inflamed gums can cause heart disease by atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).

The good news is that 80% of heart problems can be prevented with knowledge and positive behavioral changes. To ensure a healthier heart:

  • Have your blood pressure and cholesterol checked
  • Encourage your family to eat healthy foods and stay away from foods high in sugar and salt content.
  • Quit smoking
  • Educate others about heart disease and oral health
  • Remind your child of the importance of staying active

High Calorie Drinks Reduced In Schools

A while ago, we blogged about a possible sugar tax being implemented on foods with added sugar and sweeteners, such as soft drinks. It was designed to discourage both adults and children from purchasing unhealthy food and drink. Now it seems that the next step has been taken by reducing the availability of these items in schools, helping to further combat obesity.

There has been a huge reduction in drink calorie content available in schools (90%) between 2004-10. These numbers reflect the partnership between the William J. Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association with major drink companies to lessen these drinks' availability.

Vending machines in schools now look much different than in previous years. An assortment of water, milk, juice and sports drinks is what's typically available versus an assortment of sodas before. An assessment of the foods offered in school cafeterias will be underway soon as well.

As the obesity rate climbed, officials began to take notice and search for the cause. Christopher Ashley, supervisor of food and nutrition for Springfield City Schools, said:

“Nine years ago I came into this segment of food service, and you’d see a Honey Buns and two Mountain Dews for breakfast. Now kids are going through the line and getting a better breakfast. That’s just the start.”

The alliance between the William J. Clinton Foundation and beverage companies should continue to make a difference. As stated above, obesity rates have dropped significantly in the past few years. With an emphasis placed on health and wellness not just in schools, but in the media, it is believed that the rate will continue to drop. Once the school menus reflect the nutrition of the drinks, students will be at a major advantage for better overall health.
