Bright and Healthy Smiles for the Summer!

June 28th, 2017

It is summertime and you are finally ready to take on a good well-deserved vacation. You have finally freed up some space on your phone and are probably just ready for the limitless photo opportunities. But, is your smile also ready to steal the show?

Wherever you go this summer, remember that your smile is one of the first things that people notice about you. That is why the state of your teeth is a big contributor to your overall confidence.

Any diet that is high in acidic food or drinks leads to a weakening of the enamel which makes it more more likely to get stained and discolored. In addition, acid leads to the wearing away of your tooth enamel. The worn areas of your tooth expose the dentin, which is also yellow in color and adds to the dullness of your smile.

Here are a few things you can do yourself to keep a bright and healthy smile and prevent dental diseases and discoloration.

  • One of the easiest things you can do to have good oral health is to brush your teeth regularly, meaning at least twice a day, preferably after each meal; the mechanical motion of brushing your teeth helps you remove plaque.
  • Flossing and brushing go hand-in-hand. This helps you keep your teeth and gums healthy. Using a rubbing motion, go gently between each tooth and make sure that you also go under the gum line. So, floss after every meal, and snack, to prevent build-ups.
  • Rinsing with a good mouthwash also goes hand-in-hand with brushing your teeth and flossing. Rinsing with a mouthwash that could be either diluted hydrogen peroxide or fluoride based gives you an extra support when trying to remove bacteria, or strengthen your teeth and prevent cavities.
  • Healthy eating also plays a major role when it comes to your smile. Avoid consuming foods and beverages that cause stain. Blueberries, cherries, blackberries are popular fruits during the summer, but try rinsing your mouth with water after you snack on them. The same goes for coffee, iced tea, red or white wine, and fruity juices. One way you can consume those drinks is either by using a straw, or by having a glass of water and rinsing your mouth regularly.
  • The best help you can get for a healthy and white smile would be to visit a dental specialist for professional cleaning and whitening treatments.

Get Whiter Teeth For Summer!

July 5th, 2016

smiling

A dazzling bright smile is all the catch nowadays. Especially now that it's summer and there are many graduations, weddings, and fun events planned, why not show off a healthy white smile! Of course regular dental habits like brushing and flossing are ways to keep a brighter smile. However, if you feel like your smile doesn't sparkle as much as you'd like, there are many products and whitening treatments available to achieve your smile goals.

Tooth whitening is a simple process and a great option for individuals who have stained or discolored teeth. Teeth can become stained for many reasons, including tobacco use, certain medications, foods with dark dyes, and such as red wine, coffee, tea, and soda.  Even the natural aging process can cause tooth discoloration.

Since so many whitening options are available, it can sometimes be challenging to decide which one you would like to use. Come schedule an appointment and talk to the Smile Ambassadors at Wellesley Dental Group about the differences between in-office professional whitening and at-home whitening. Check out the in-office professional whitening we offer:

Home Whitening

Beautiful young woman teeth.

There are many products sold for tooth whitening that can be done at home, but it is important to consult with a dental professional before use.

Tray whitening:

Tray whitening involves using custom-made trays and whitening gel only available through your dentist. At-home professional tray whitening typically lasts from ten to 14 days.

Paint-on teeth whiteners:

Teeth-Whitener-Paint

Paint-on whiteners are sold at convenient stores and are relatively inexpensive. This method consists of a gel that is applied to the tooth using a small brush. The gel hardens and eventually dissolves in the mouth.

Whitening strips:

Teeth-whitening strip kits are a common home whitening procedure which includes thin, flexible plastic (polyethylene) strips that contain hydrogen peroxide on one side. The strips are typically worn for 30 minutes a day, twice a day but vary in duration depending on the brand.

Whitening mouthwash and toothpaste:

Several brands of whitening toothpastes and mouthwashes can be found at many drug stores and convenient stores and are typically the least expensive option. These toothpastes and mouthwashes help remove surface stains by using mild abrasives. However, these products only mildly lighten your teeth and are not as reliable as in-office whitening treatments.

Home Whitening Done Right

July 31st, 2014

Whitening your teeth at home has never been easier with so many whitening kits available for purchase at anywhere from cosmetic shops like Sephora to grocery stores.  Some of the more popular whitening kits include Crest 3D Whitestrips and GLO Brilliant Personal Teeth Whitening Devices.  Although such "DIY" style teeth whitening may seem safe and effective, it is still important to discuss whitening treatment options with your dentist prior to using them.  In fact, even the American Dental Association (ADA) suggests that people should see a dentist prior to undergoing any sort of teeth whitening by a non-dentist.

Although many of us equate a bright, white smile with healthy teeth, the ADA warns that white teeth may not necessarily be healthy teeth.  For instance, teeth naturally yellow with age regardless of oral health.  Additionally, ultra white spots on your teeth could suggest that you have too much fluoride in your diet or act as an indicator of calcium deficiency.  A consultation with your dentist prior to starting a home whitening program is crucial for many reasons.  First, a dentist can supervise your teeth as you are using a whitening program.

For instance, your dentist could prevent you from experiencing the effects of over-bleaching, which include uneven color spots or even a bluish hue.  Additionally, it is important to have healthy gums as diagnosed by a dentist because whitening can cause gum irritation in certain cases.  Another common side effect of whitening is heightened teeth sensitivity.  Dentists can predict whether or not you will experience sensitivity issues and recommend products like special sensitivity toothpastes accordingly.  Finally, sometimes you don't even need a whitening kit for whiter teeth!  In some cases, a simple scaling and professional cleaning procedure is sufficient for a brighter smile.

Dr. David McFadden, a professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Texas says, "For someone with deep cavities, the bleach can have an unimpeded route to the blood vessels, nerves and bone at the root of the tooth.  It can potentially cause a bad toothache or precipitate an infection."  A dentist can quickly spot developing cavities and treat them prior to any whitening regimen to avoid pain or infections.

Outstanding Yelp Review

August 8th, 2012

We recently received the below review on Yelp. We are truly speechless and touched by our patient's kind words and comments. Thank you so very much!

08/07/12

"After a negative experience at another local dentist, I followed my friends' advice and took my then 2.5 year old twins to see Dr. Femina Ali at Wellesley Dental Group.  Immediately, she put my children's minds at ease--even conducting my daughter's dental exam in a waiting room chair when she was too nervous to sit in the big dental chair.  Dr Ali's patience and natural ability with children has had such a positive impact on my children that they actually LOOK FORWARD to their semi-annual cleanings and visits.
Once we saw firsthand their high level of service and dedication at the Pediatric level and realized that they work with adults as well, my husband and I switched for our own dental visits as well.  Now we all go as a family, which I feel sets an especially good example for my kids.  They see that we're making our dental care a priority, so they are as well. My husband and I have both needed fillings in the past five years, and Dr. Ejaz Ali is an absolute perfectionist (which we love)!  Using cutting edge technology, he makes a mold to not only fill the tooth, but to make it a seamless match that will last a lifetime and look like it was always part of the tooth.  He did such a great job that I opted to have my previous fillings taken out and replaced with his handiwork.  My teeth look great and my smile is brighter and healthier than ever!

In addition to Drs. Femina and Ejaz Ali, I also have to mention their staff.  They employ a team of people who are warm, engaging, and passionate about dental health.  In the office and representing the practice around town, they make everyone feel welcome and take a genuine interest in each patient.  They even help entertain our kids while we're having our teeth cleaned!

Over the years, we have used their Oral Surgeon Dr. Ghazi to extract numerous teeth from both children.  He has the gentlest touch and always took great care to make it quick, easy, and painless for my children.  My children have also seen Dr. Emad--their orthodontist--to have their teeth evaluated for future orthodonture needs.  As a busy working mom, I am so grateful to have these services offered in-house, so I don't have to go elsewhere.  It makes it so much easier for me, especially knowing their high standard of care.

All in all, we can't say enough about the Wellesley Dental Group.  They are what every dental practice should be.  After six years as patients and friends of the Wellesley Dental Group -- we wouldn't trust our teeth and smiles to anyone else!!" - Joanna
