Drinking from a Can? Think Again!

Ever wonder if drinking from a can, a glass, or using straw could make a difference to your teeth? We all know that foods and drinks can play a role on the health of your teeth, but many would not have thought that the way you consume your drink can also be an important factor. Well, as it turns out, your drinking method does matter when consuming sugary beverages!

Sugary drinks can cause a lot of damage to your teeth, and your body too. According to a study published in the Academy of General Dentistry people in the United States consume about one and a half cans of soda a day, and a total of 576 each year! The study found that people who drink soft drinks straight from the can are more likely to get tooth decay on their back molar teeth. Consuming sugary drinks like sodas and energy drinks increase your risk of weight gain, and developing several medical conditions including Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and gout -and kids are not exempt! Children are 60% more likely to become obese with each sugary beverage consumed per day and are 2 times more susceptible to tooth decay.

Sugar as we know is what bacteria love to eat, and as a result the bacteria within your mouth produce acids that ultimately lead to tooth decay and breakdown your tooth enamel. But, we all have that craving for a soda every once and a while. That's why it is important to learn about preventative measures to take when consuming sugary beverages. Research shows that holding a drink in your mouth and taking long sips is detrimental to your teeth because it increases the acidity within your mouth. A smaller drop in the pH occurs when you drink the beverage straight down quickly and in one sitting. Sipping on a soda can throughout the day leads right to decay due to the constant exposure of your teeth to the sugars. The American Dental Association (ADA) also recommends using a straw positioned towards the back of your mouth when consuming beverages to avoid contact of the drink with your teeth. This of course does not prevent you from developing cavities, but it will help reduce your risk.

Not to mention, when you consume your sugary beverages also matters. It is best to do so during mealtime as opposed to by itself. Rinsing with water is also important to help wash away the sugars. In addition, avoid brushing immediately after consuming sugary drinks, because your tooth enamel is in a weakened state and can be harmed from brushing.

Remember, everything in moderation is key. Always try to be mindful of what drinks you are consuming and how you are consuming them.

Give Thanks for your Teeth!

Our caring team at Wellesley Dental Group wishes you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving! We hope that you have a day filled with great food and are surrounded by loved ones. Today there are lots of traditional Thanksgiving foods filled with vitamins and nutrients that may be present on your table, in addition to some that may not be the most tooth-friendly. If your looking for vitamins and nutrients to help keep your smile healthy, take a look at our breakdown of some of the hidden gems that you may be having in your Thanksgiving spread this year:

Need a Healthy Appetizer While the Food Cooks?

While the food is cooking, cheese, mixed nuts, and raw vegetables make a great snack! Cheese is is rich in calcium which is important for keeping your teeth strong. Casein, a protein within milk products, helps to prevent cavities. Nuts also contain calcium and minerals that help strengthen and remineralize your tooth enamel. Your saliva production is also at a high rate by chewing nuts and raw vegetables , which helps neutralize harmful acids and protect your teeth. Vegetables like celery and carrots also can help clean between teeth by acting like mini toothbrushes. Not to mention they contain the tooth-friendly Vitamin A.

The All-Star Turkey

The star of this holiday is thankfully packed with protein. Your mucosal tissues are also positively impacted by the iron and zinc within turkey. In addition, turkey is rich in phosphorous which is important for the health of your bones and teeth. Just keep some floss handy as turkey strands can easily find its way in-between your teeth.

The Accompanying Sides

Cranberry sauce can be the turkey's best companion. Unfortunately, lots of sugar is often added to many cranberry sauce recipes and in canned cranberries. However, try having fresh cranberries with your turkey this year. Cranberries are known to protect your teeth by blocking the harmful bacteria from their process in making cavities. They are loaded with many antioxidants which help your immune system fight against diseases.

Green beans make a great tasty side dish as they are rich in vitamins A, C, and K, which are great for gum health.

Yams and sweet potatoes also make a great side. If prepared without sugar additives, yams and sweet potatoes can be tooth-friendly as they are packed with Vitamin C, Thiamine, Niacin, Vitamin A, Fiber, and Potassium. They contain anti-inflammatory properties which can help fight periodontal disease. If your recipe does call for sugar, just be sure to rinse with water afterwards and keep up with brushing and flossing habits.

Saving the Best for Last: Dessert!


The smell of dessert alone can be the sweetest part of Thanksgiving! There's nothing like a home-made pumpkin pie, which is full of Vitamin A that strengthens tooth enamel and promotes gum health. Plus, pumpkin pie doesn't necessary need the added sugars due to its naturally sweet taste.

Another tooth-friendly dessert to try is fresh pear slices with honey yogurt dip. This recipe calls for about 2 tablespoons of honey with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon and fresh pear slices served on a platter. Pears are great for neutralizing harmful acids on tooth surfaces. Yogurt is also tooth-friendly as it contains calcium and phosphates.

Be sure to drink plenty of water throughout your meal to help wash away any leftover food particles from clinging to your teeth. Tap water contains fluoride which helps remineralize teeth and protect against cavities. Black and green tea have also been found to help kill harmful bacteria and fight against tooth decay. After a well-deserve Thanksgiving meal don't forget to brush and floss.

What's a Dental Crown?

Has your dentist told you that you need a crown? Of course you are royalty, but a dental crown is slightly different than the crowns we are used to hearing about. A dental crown is like a cap that your dentist places over your tooth to restore it to its normal appearance and function. You may need a crown depending on the amount of tooth structure that you have left remaining. For instance, if you have a cavity that becomes too big to be replaced by a filing. Or if your tooth is chipped or worn down. Also, a crown may be indicated if you are in need of a root canal. Crowns can be made from several types of materials, including  metal alloys, ceramics, porcelain, or porcelain fused to metal (PFM) for example. The best pick of material for your crown is decided taking into consideration the location of the tooth in need of the crown, the shade of the tooth, and the position of your gum tissue just to name a few factors.

The process of getting a crown include the dentist first preparing the tooth by removing the outer surface of the tooth and any decay that is present. Sometimes your tooth may require an additional filling, also known as a core buildup, to support the crown. Then, an impression is taken of the prepared tooth in order to get a model of the tooth. While the crown is being made a temporary crown will be placed on the tooth. While having a temporary crown it is important to avoid chewing gum and eating sticky foods to prevent the temporary crown from dislodging. Also, when flossing be sure to slide the floss through rather than lifting it out to avoid pulling off the temporary crown. The last step is the cementation of the crown within the mouth along with any necessary adjustments.

What's important to know is that your crown needs to be taken care of just like your natural teeth. Crowned teeth can still be subject to tooth decay and gum disease.  Like always, you still want to brush your teeth for twice a day for two minutes each time, floss at least once a day, and avoid hard candies and an excess of sugary/acidic substances. You also want to make sure you are seeing your dentist regularly to ensure that your crown is sealed properly and doing well.

Thank YOU for a Sweet 12th Annual Candy Drive: Event Highlights

Just because Halloween is over, doesn’t mean the sweetness has to end! The past couple of weeks, we hosted our 12th Annual Candy Drive at Wellesley Dental Group-- the largest one in size and scope to date! This year we had a record number of 17,000 students across 52 schools and 15 towns in the MetroWest and Greater Boston area participate. Together, our community collected 13,237 pounds of Halloween candy-- beating the 2018 all-time high of 12,000 pounds! That's about 6,500 pounds of sugar. This candy is assembled into care packages for the US troops overseas with the help CarePacks, a local non-profit organization. The candy, along with sweet handwritten cards and oral hygiene supplies, will be sure to put a smile on the faces of the troops -- just in time for the approaching holiday season. We could not have done this without YOU!

In celebration of the annual initiative, we had our community and press event on November 8th. The chilly November weather didn’t stop members of the community from coming together to celebrate the monumental candy collection. The crowd enjoyed performances from Evan Lariviere and the Wellesley High School Keynotes, led by Dr. Kevin McDonald. Rick Bruce from CarePacks and Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Peterson from the Wellesley Fire Department also shared a few words thanking participants for their generosity towards our servicepeople. Also in attendance were representatives from the 51st Command Troop, West Suburban Veterans’ District, U.S. Coastguard and Wellesley Police Department, not to mention all the local students of all ages!

During the event, the grand prize of $1000 was awarded to Hardy Elementary School in Wellesley for raising the greatest amount of candy by weight per student. In second place was Fiske Elementary in Wellesley and in third place was Willard Elementary in Concord.

Every year, this candy drive draws the community together, and we unite over the generosity of our children, as they give up their prized Halloween candy to help our servicepeople enjoy a sweet taste from home.

Sipping Soft Drinks Associated with Obesity and Tooth Wear

We all have certain food and drink cravings. For many, sodas may be one of them. We all know soda isn't the healthiest drink choice, however, you may not have known that sodas have been associated with both tooth decay and obesity, according to new research. According to the study published in ‘Clinical Oral Investigations,’ researchers found a direct link between the amount of sugary soft drinks and the breakdown of tooth enamel. In adult study participants who had tooth wear, researchers found that the number of surfaces affected was 1.4 times higher for each additional sugary/acidic beverage per day. They also found that the number of surfaces with moderate-to-severe tooth wear was 17% lower for each additional non-sugar/non-acidic beverage the adult drank each day.

Carbonated and acidic drinks can lead to enamel erosion, or tooth wear, which can have a negative impact on your oral health. Once the tooth enamel becomes worn down, the shape and appearance of the teeth can begin to change. The layer beneath tooth enamel, known as dentin, also begins to show and you may begin experiencing tooth sensitivity to  cold or hot foods and beverages. This can lead to many extra costly dental procedures down the road. Plus, acidic beverages are also known to increase the risk of gastric reflux disease in people who are overweight. So, not only are these drinks causing harm to your teeth, they are also damaging your body. The good news is, tooth wear can be preventable!

Diet is important for your overall health and pearly whites. Be sure to choose healthier drink alternatives. If you are to indulge in soda, do so in moderation and be sure to drink plenty of water afterwards to dilute the acid and sugar. Using a straw when consuming acidic beverages is also helpful to keep the sugar away from sitting on your teeth. Not to mention, ever heard of the slogan, "sip all day, get decay?" The statement is true! Sipping on soda throughout the day for long p periods of time can quickly breakdown your teeth, as the acid attacks your enamel with each sip of soda you take. Be sure to engage in physical activity each day and keep up with good oral hygiene practices.

A Special Day in Honor of Veterans

November 11th, 2019

Today marks Veterans Day and we are extremely grateful for all veterans who have served our country.

November 11, 1918 is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice, which was the agreement to end World War I. There is a lot going on today which you and your family can join in celebration for! Checkout the cool events happening today.

Not to mention, we are so thankful for all of your donations and participation at our 12th Annual Candy Drive for the Troops, which was even bigger and better than ever before! The thousands of pounds of candy, tons of thoughtful messages, and oral hygiene kits were donated to our U.S. troops overseas.

There's not just one, but two parades happening in Boston! These parades will include walking around historical places including City Hall Plaza, Boston Common, and Faneuil Hall where there will be a lot of live music, poetry, and speeches in honor of Veteran's Day.

Volunteer Opportunity with New England Center for Homeless Veterans

Looking for a chance to honor and give back to Veterans? The New England Center for Homeless Veterans are in need of volunteers each day to serve lunch and dinner, along with helping with activities. Volunteer slots include volunteering for either an hour, or full-day, for one time visit or as a regular volunteer.

What's in Your Candy Bowl?

Here at WDG, we wish you a happy, safe, and tooth-friendly Halloween! It's hard not to love candy, especially when there's so much of it around like during Halloween. Most of us have a "sweet-tooth," but we all know sometimes this can come at a cost to our dental health. Tooth decay can develop as the sugars from candy breakdown your tooth enamel.
Today lots of candy will be collected from house to house, and most of the time children will have a collection of all types of candy within their bags. But, did you know that all candies are not created equal? There are some candies that are worse for your oral health than others. Take a look at what candies should be avoided:

Sour Patch Kids

Sour Patch Kids are loaded with sugar. In fact, it's ingredients all contain sugar and acids that are harmful to your teeth, including corn syrup, tartaric acid, citric acid, modified corn starch, and artificial flavoring. In just a 2 ounce bag, there is about 36 grams fo sugar! Sour candies also contribute to enamel erosion due to their high acidic content.

Tootsie Rolls

As you may know, sticky candies like tootsie rolls have a hard time being removed from the pits and grooves on your teeth. This allows bacteria to make themselves at home and produce acids that contribute to tooth decay. Not to mention, even though they're small, they're packed with sugar. In 6 tootsie rolls there is about 20 grams of sugar.

Caramel

Caramel can be another sticky issue. Its ingredients include glucose syrup, sugar and cane sugar syrup for a total of 16 grams of sugar for 6 tiny pieces.

Candy corn

Candy corn is a Halloween staple. However, it can contain more sugar than ice-cream and is another sticky culprit that your teeth will benefit from not having.

Jawbreakers

The name itself is terrifying, and true. Hard candies, such as jawbreakers can cause extreme jaw pain and even lead to cracked teeth. They also last a long period of time within the mouth which exposes your teeth to harmful sugars for the lengthy periods.

Fun Dip

The assortment of colors and sweet taste of fun dip can be cool, but it is essentially made up of 100% sugar and can be detrimental to your pearly-whites.

Snickers

The chocolate and caramel goodness can be not so sweet for your teeth despite the high sugar content. It's another sticky treat, and contains 27 grams of sugar, and contains 266 calories.

But not to worry, once done sorting from the huge candy pile collected today, our Annual Candy Drive is a great way to share extra Halloween candy for a great cause. We will send all donations and caring messages to our U.S. troops overseas to express our gratitude for their service. Any school, organization, or individual is welcome to participate. We also award a grand prize of $1000 to the school PTO that donated the most candy, taking into account the number of students per school and amount of pounds of candy collected per student. Halloween Do's and Don'ts!

Halloween is quickly approaching, and the last thing anyone wants to be haunted by is cavities! Halloween can be a great time to promote good oral health habits for life, even with the temptation of sweet treats around for the occasion. What many people may not know is that the frequency of snacking on foods high in sugar, like candy, is more harmful to your teeth than the actual amount of sugar present in the snack. The amount of time the sugar is present on your teeth leads to a greater number of acid attacks on your teeth, eventually resulting in tooth decay. So, to prevent being spooked by cavities, here's a few suggestions to keep your teeth strong and healthy this Halloween:

Pass out sugar-free treats

A great way to promote healthy teeth to your little ones is to pass out tooth-friendly Halloween treats during this trick-or-treat season. Passing out glow-in-the dark stick bracelets and necklaces are fun and nice for trick-or-treaters so that they can shine as they walk through neighborhoods collecting treats. Small water bottles are also useful for the kids to drink after they consume their candy treats while going from house to house. Also, sugar-free gum with xylitol, stickers, and even toothbrushes make for great gifts that can be passed out during Halloween!

 

Timing is Everything!

Halloween candy is best eaten with meals or not too long after mealtime when saliva production is at its highest. Saliva helps wash away the acids made by bacteria as well as any leftover food particles within the mouth. Water also is important to swish with after indulging in sweets.

Avoid sticky situations:

Sticky and sour candies can do a number on your teeth more than other candies. Sticky candies can get stuck in the grooves of teeth and remain their for long periods of time and increase your risk of developing cavities. Also, sour candies often are more acidic and can break down your tooth enamel.

Take a Deep Breath: Vaping Effects On Your Lungs

Many of us have been following the devastating news of young adult deaths related to vaping across the country. Vaping has recently become an epidemic and major public health issue. With Respiratory Care Week beginning today, October 20th-26th, and  Healthy Lung Month the entire month of October, we would like to highlight all of the necessary information needed to keep our lungs breathing well to last us an entire lifetime!

The statistics on lung disease are disheartening, with greater than 35 million Americans living with a chronic lung disease such as asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Not to mention, lung cancer is the #1 cause of death related to cancer for both women and men in the U.S. Many lung diseases have been a result of cigarette smoking. Cigarette use has decreased in comparison to the past, however the rise of e-cigarettes/vaping has drastically made its way into society, particularly with young adults. The use of e-cigarettes has been reported by approximately 20% of high school students in the U.S. within the last month. Surprisingly even 5% of middle school students in the U.S. have reported using e-cigarettes within the last month. In Massachusetts, the numbers are even higher: 40% of high school students and 10% of middle school students have used e-cigarettes within the past month. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), over 1000 people have become affected with respiratory issues as a result of vaping. As of today, the CDC reports that there have been 33 deaths in 24 states.

The use of e-cigarettes not only damages lungs and brain development, but also one’s oral health, and it is important to our caring team here at WDG to keep you in the loop and ensure your safety and health. Sadly, vaping has been marketed as a “healthy” alternative to smoking tobacco cigarettes. With research still ongoing, vaping can contain the addictive substance nicotine, and chemical particles within the vapor, including volatile organic compounds, flavoring agents, cancer-causing chemicals, and heavy metals which can all negatively impact your health. Plus, e-cigarettes can cause dry mouth, gum inflammation, and increase the amount of cavity-causing bacteria. Long-term effects of vaping are still being researched.

Treats for Troops: What Our Annual Candy Drive is All About

Each fall here at the Wellesley Dental Group is an exciting and sweet-filled season: It's Candy Drive time! We are reminded just how truly amazing the power of giving is, and how special it is when our community comes together for a great cause. We are extremely grateful to see this annual initiative continue to grow, now going on for twelve years! This tradition sprung from our goal of promoting selfless acts of giving in children through sharing extra Halloween candy to protect their pearly whites, and sending caring messages to honor and express gratitude to our U.S. troops overseas. Community and service to others is an essential part of our core values, and each year we could not accomplish these efforts without YOU! Last year 13,749 students were involved and we collected 12,238 pounds of candy from over 43 schools, and several other individuals and organizations. This year we plan to break this record and are excited for the celebration to be even greater.

Last year we were able to send over 500 packages filled with the candy, oral hygiene supplies, and caring handwritten cards from the community’s donations through CarePacks, a non-profit organization located in Weymouth, MA.

But, the party doesn't stop there. Once the donations are collected, we celebrate with the community at our community and press event at our office in Wellesley. This grand celebration is always a blast, with performances by young students, special guest speakers, representatives from the National Guard, and Wellesley Fire and Police departments! Take a look in the past and check out photos from 2017's 10th Annual Candy Drive here, and 2018's 11th Annual Candy Drive here.

Not to mention, we always award a grand prize of $1000 to the school PTO that donated the most candy, taking into account the number of students per school and amount of pounds of candy collected per student. Last years first place winner was Hardy Elementary School, with Broadmeadow Elementary in second place, and Fiske Elementary School in third place. Who will be the winner this year in 2019? We can't wait to find out!

So, as we head into the season of trick-or-treats with Halloween in the near future, we are looking forward to celebrating this fun tradition with you!

4 Easy Steps to a Healthy Mouth

The work dental hygienists do is tremendously valuable, and worth celebrating every day! In fact, the month of October represents Dental Hygiene Month across the nation. Each October we are all reminded to promote healthy smiles. Practicing good oral health is necessary to keep strong teeth, healthy gums, and even a healthy overall body. The connections between periodontal disease (gum disease) and systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes is real. Unfortunately, the American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA) reports that approximately 75% of people in America have some form of periodontal disease, which is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults. This, however, is preventable with good oral hygiene practices.

With early starts to your day and a big to-do list, it can sometimes be easy to skip some of your oral hygiene routine. But, not to worry! The American Dental Hygienists Association and American Dental Association offer four essential , quick, and easy tips on how to keep a healthy and clean mouth, even when you're on-the-move: Brush. Floss. Rinse. Chew. Check it out:

Brushing:

Brushing your teeth is necessary twice daily for two minutes each time. Brushing is key to help eliminate the accumulation of food particles and plaque that oral bacteria feed off of leading to gum disease and tooth decay.

 

Flossing:

Flossing may seem tedious, but your oral health depends on it. Flossing is recommended once daily to help remove plaque and food in hard to reach areas between the teeth that the toothbrush cannot remove.

 

Rinsing:

Mouth rinses are not only good to help freshen breath, but also offer an antibacterial component that helps fight and prevent cavities. Be sure to purchase a  non-alcohol based mouthwash with the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Mouthwash will help eliminate plaque and keep your gums healthy.

 

Chewing:

Sugar-free gum has been found to help improve your oral health by stimulating saliva to wash away remaining food particles. It also can help strengthen enamel by neutralizing the acids produced by oral bacteria and is recommended to chew for about 20 minutes after consuming meals.

Vaping: A Public Health Emergency

September 28th, 2019

You may have heard about the recent devastating health crisis in young adults: electronic cigarettes (e-cigarette) and vaping products causing severe lung disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and state health departments, are looking into the link between e-cigarette products and lung disease. As of September 24, 2019, Governor of Massachusetts, Charles D. Baker, declared a public health emergency on this issue and initiated a temporary four-month statewide ban on the sale of vaping products, including tobacco and marijuana, in stores and online until January 25, 2020. The latest news reports 805 cases of lung damage from 46 states in America, with 12 current deaths. According to the CDC, 67% of cases are aged 18 to 34 years old, 38% are under the age of 21 years old, 17 % are over 35 years old, and 16% are under the age of 18. A majority of the individuals reported using e-cigarette products with THC and nicotine. The direct cause of the lung problems is still being investigated.

E-cigarette use is also known as vaping, and works by warming up a liquid which becomes inhaled into the lungs. E-cigarettes have become increasingly advertised over the past few years. So much so that Juul, an electronic cigarette company, increased their sales by almost 800% from 2017 to 2018. Sadly, they have been marketed as “safer” alternatives to cigarette smoking, although in reality they carry many of the same risks as well as new risks.The inhaled liquids are often made up of nicotine, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabinoid (CBD) oils, along with other substances. Each product, however, may contain a variation of other ingredients and concentrations, which may be toxic to the body.

Both cigarettes and vaping products are not only damaging for your lungs and body, but also are not good for your oral health. Nicotine has been found to prevent healthy blood flow within the gums, which can increase your risk of developing gingivitis and periodontitis. In addition, one of the ingredients found in vaping products, propylene glycol, has been found to cause dry mouth. Dry mouth plays a detrimental role in oral health because it can lead to tooth decay and oral thrush. Not to mention, e-cigarettes can contribute to DNA damage and result in oral cancer.

For your health and safety, avoid smoking all e-cigarettes/vaping products and use of tobacco cigarettes. The Massachusetts Tobacco Cessation and Prevention Program offers information and resources that can help individuals quit. Massachusetts also partners with national resources for teens interested in quitting smoking or vaping via My Life, My QuitTM and This is Quitting powered by Truth® program.

Tips on Living Long and Healthy

Now that we're into the month of September, it's time to focus our attention on how to improve our overall health in honor and celebration of Healthy Aging Month! This yearly observance focuses on highlighting tips to help individuals improve their physical and mental health as adults get older. This means also focusing on oral health, since the mouth is a window to the rest of the body. In fact, gum disease, which is common in older people, has been found to be linked with memory loss. Which means taking care of your mind may rely heavily on taking care of your mouth! It is important to realize that as we continue to age, there are changes that occur within the mouth that affect our teeth and the surrounding gums and bone. It is key to minimize damage to our oral cavity at any age by maintaining regular dental visits, and keeping up with good oral hygiene habits each day. Often, poor oral health becomes a factor that worsens existing chronic health problems that an individual may face, including heart disease and diabetes.

In addition, older adults may often be taking several medications daily, which can lead to dry mouth. Not only is the feeling of dry mouth annoying, but it also is harmful to your teeth because it can increase your risk of developing tooth decay due to less saliva being present within the mouth.

No matter what age we are, it is always a great time to start practicing healthy lifestyle habits. Take a look at these tips for healthy aging:

1. Drink plenty of water!

Staying hydrated is very important for our bodies. Tap water is the best resource because it contains fluoride, which plays a major role in keeping your teeth healthy.

2. Healthy snacks are the way to go

We need to be a little picky with our food choices in order to have a diet that is healthy for our teeth and body. Snacks filled with protein including yogurt, cheese, and nuts make great healthy and tooth-friendly snacks. Also eating foods high in iron, such as spinach, meats, and beans, can help give you the energy you need for each day. Avoid eating sugary foods and candy, as these items aren't so tooth-friendly despite their tastiness.

3. Brushing and flossing habits at home

It is important to brush at least twice a day, and floss at least once a day to help wash away all of the food particles and bacteria within the mouth that could cause harm to your pearly whites. If you wear any oral appliances, such as a retainer or denture, be sure to clean these since bacteria can harbor themselves there too! Fluoride Mouthwash also makes for a good addition to your oral care habits. Not only does the mouth wash help make your breath smell nice and fresh, it also may contain beneficial fluoride and can easily be added to your night and/or morning time routine.

4. Be active

Exercise is essential for staying healthy as we get older. Adults are recommended to get at least 150 minutes of exercise each week.

5. Schedule your dental visit

Be sure that your are visiting your dentist for a regular check up at least twice a year to ensure that your teeth are healthy.

Why Should I Donate Blood?

Donating blood may not be on your to-do list, but there are many great reasons to donate blood. By donating blood, you can help someone's life, even across the world! You may have noticed that your social media timelines, television screens, and phone news notifications were filled with news of Hurricane Dorian, the destructive Category 5 hurricane affecting the Bahamas, Southeastern United States, and Atlantic Canada recently. Blood donations are invaluable, especially during natural disasters when many people are in need. Not to mention, the selfless act of donating blood can help save 3 lives. People in hospitals, accidents, or with certain medical conditions, for instance, can benefit from blood donations.
Plus, the good thing is that it's a very easy process! There are some requirements needed before the blood donation can be given, such as you must weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and feeling well, and be over the age of 16.
Individuals with Type O blood are known as universal donors, and people with all blood types can receive this blood donation. But, interestingly enough, you are benefiting from the blood donation just like the person recieving the donation. Donating blood helps improve your cardiovascular health, lowers your risk of cancer, allows the production of new blood cells, and you can receive a free health screening.
Don't worry, donating blood is not harmful to your body. After about a day your body replaces the lost fluids. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids and eat a healthy meal before donating blood.

Tooth Decay -Genetic or Environmental?

It’s easy to blame somethings on our parents, but recent research shows that you shouldn’t blame tooth decay on genetics. In the past it has been thought that our risk of developing cavities is similar to our family members. However, more research is showing that tooth decay boils down mainly to environmental factors rather than genetics. Although we can’t just easily point to our parents when we develop a cavity, this can be a good thing because tooth decay is largely preventable! Take a look at what influences your risk of tooth decay and how you can prevent it:

Interestingly enough, we are made up of good bacteria that help us survive. However, some of the bacteria found within the mouth can feed on sugars within the foods we eat and lead to tooth decay. These bacteria produce acids that wear down our tooth enamel and create what we all dread and know to be cavities. These bacteria often come after birth, and with more research specific bacteria are being found to play a role in creating cavities. While some bacteria we do inherit from our parents, others that have been linked to causing dental cavities are not found to be associated with genetics, including Streptococcus mutants, and Porphyromonas gingivalis. The study conducted by the J. Craig Venter Institute in Maryland evaluated 485 pairs of identical and fraternal twins within the age range of 5 to 11 years old. When analyzing the study participants’ dental plaque and bacteria present within the mouth, they found that environmental factors played a significant role in the type of bacteria present that were associated with causing tooth decay. The bacteria responsible for causing tooth decay were mainly due to factors including diet and home care dental habits such as brushing and flossing. However, family history is important when looking at risks of tooth decay, for instance similar food diets shared between family members could increase or lower the risk of tooth decay.

What you may be able to blame genes for is the development of teeth. Such as the relationship between your teeth when biting together, the timing in which your teeth first appear, or even the size of teeth (macrodontia or microdontia).

So, while somethings you may get away with being able to blame your parents for, tooth decay is largely in part influenced by environmental factors. This is why it’s extremely important to get regular dental check-ups, and practice good oral hygiene care to ensure that your teeth are healthy and lasting lifetime!

How to Protect "Buck Teeth"

We all try to play it safe and keep our teeth protected and healthy, but sometimes traumatic dental injuries can be inevitable, particularly for children. From sports activities to just having some good-ole fun playing outside, accidents can happen and hurt your little one’s teeth. Sadly, not only can it be traumatic for your little one, but it can also be costly. The risk of dental trauma is specifically increased for children with teeth that protrude outwards. This is often known as, “buck teeth.” Due to the positioning of the teeth, the teeth often extend beyond the protective lip, which can make their teeth more susceptible to injuries. According to a recent study performed at the University of Adelaide in Australia, a connection was found between the degree of protrusion of children’s teeth and risk of damaging teeth. The study analyzed 50,000 children under the age of 19 years old. The study concluded that kids up to the age of six years old with teeth protruding over 3 mm are three times as likely to suffer with dental trauma than kids without protruding teeth. In addition, they found that kids over the age of six with teeth protruding greater than 5 mm are twice as likely to experience dental trauma.

Great news is that this risk can be reduced! Regular dental check-ups are extrememly important for your child to help lower the chance of developing long-term dental issues. Protruding teeth can be caused by numerous things. This includes negative oral habits such as thumb-sucking, longterm pacifier use, and tongue-thrusting. Genetics may also play a role in the alignment of teeth. Your dentist can analyze the relationship of your teeth and come up with the right treatment options to help prevent their harm. Orthodontic treatment may be necessary to help correct protruding teeth. Also, be sure that your child always wears a properly fitting mouth guard when playing sports to help prevent dental trauma.

Remember, prevention is key! If teeth are knocked out or injured at an early stage, this can cause extra dental procedures including root canals or even extractions.

Sometimes we often forget just how important our food choices are for our bodies. Especially when we are craving that most-delicious sweet that we all cannot resist! Things like candy and soda both typically fill our hearts desires, but as we all know they’re not on our good side. But, we truly do need to be more careful about what we eat, not only for your health but also for your pearly whites. Now that summer is soon coming to an end and school is approaching, it’s important to review what should be included on you and your child’s plate. Take a look at these healthy foods that can help satisfy your taste, and keep your mind, body, and teeth in good shape!

Dairy

Dairy products like cheese, milk, and yogurt make great tooth-friendly snacks. Cheese can help lower the risk of tooth decay by raising the pH, making the mouth less acidic. Not to mention, dairy is often full of protein and nutrients that help keep your enamel strong, like calcium. Yogurt contains healthy bacteria, also known as probiotics, which are known to help with digestion and fight off bad bacteria. Dairy is also typically low in sugar, making it a great pick for your lunch.

Nuts

 

Nuts are low in sugar, and are full of protein and minerals that are great for your overall health. Plus, chewing nuts helps trigger saliva production, which can lower your risk for tooth decay. Try tossing them in salads, or grab a bag of them to add to your lunchbox.

 

Hight Fiber Foods/Vegetables

Water

Trouble Sleeping? Here's How to Manage Sleep Apnea

In fact, many times dentists are the first medical professionals to observe the common signs and risk factors of sleep apnea in patients. These signs can include teeth grinding (also known as bruxism), dry mouth, sore throat, and jaw pain just to name a few.

Let’s take a look at the common methods of treating sleep apnea:

  • Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP):

This is the most popular method for treating obstructive sleep apnea. Oxygen is continuously supplied through a nose, mouth, or both nose and mouth mask that is connected to a machine. The device allows the airway to remain open via positive pressure. This has been proven to be highly effective in treating obstructive sleep apnea, but relies heavily on patient compliance to wear the mask throughout the night.

  • Oral appliance therapy (OAT):

Dentists can create a custom oral appliance that can help prevent your airway from collapsing during sleep. These appliances often help reposition the lower jaw and tongue from blocking the airway.

  • Surgery:

Surgery may be recommended in severe cases of sleep apnea to help eliminate airway obstruction. This may involve jaw surgery, or removing tonsils or throat tissues.

  • In addition, avoiding sleeping on your back, weight loss, and nasal decongestants can help some milder cases of sleep apnea.

Robbed of a Good Night's Rest?

Sleep is an important part of each day, so much so that the effects of a restless night can change the entire productivity of our next day! Unfortunately, many people suffer from sleeping disorders. In fact, nearly 70 million adults in the United States have a sleeping disorder, the most common of which is sleep apnea. According to the National Sleep Foundation, a whopping 18 million adults in America have sleep apnea. So, what exactly is sleep apnea? There are two main types to know about:

  • The most common form, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), is a condition involving involuntary temporary interruptions in breaths for at least ten seconds at a time due to upper airway blockage. This causes a disrupted sleeping pattern and low blood oxygen levels, which can contribute to several health issues.
  • Central sleep apnea is much less common and is characterized by failure of the brain to signal the necessary muscles involved in breathing.

As a result of the interrupted breathing pattern, individuals with sleep apnea often produce snoring and choking sounds throughout the night. You may be wondering, what’s the big deal about having sleep apnea? Sleep apnea does not only just interrupt your night’s rest, it can also put you at a higher risk of developing many conditions, including high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, diabetes, depression, and worsening of ADHD.

Who does sleep apnea affect?

Obstructive sleep apnea can impact people of all ages and any gender, however, there are some factors that can place some people at higher risk. This includes people 40 years of age and older, smokers, heavy alcohol users, males, African Americans, those who have a family history of sleep apnea, and individuals suffering from obesity, sinus problems, or allergies. Your anatomy also plays a role in your risk of developing sleep apnea. People with nasal septum deviations, a thicker neck, narrow throat, large tongue, small jaw, or enlarged tonsils are at higher risk of sleep apnea.

Why is my Tongue White?

The human body is amazing in so many ways. Our bodies often try to tell us things about our health through triggering certain signs and signals. The oral cavity can be an easy spot to indicate signs of specific health conditions developing. For instance, the color and texture of your tongue could be a clue that something is going on within your body.

The normal anatomy of the tongue is comprised of tiny nodules known as papilla. The color is typically a shade of pink, although food debris may temporarily stain the tongue. An indicator of poor oral health or possibly an underlying health condition is the presence of a white tongue that remains for a prolonged period of time. A white tongue has been associated with mouth breathing, smoking, oral thrush (fungal candidiasis infection), infections, excessive alcohol use, medication side effects, and congenital heart disease.

Most frequently it is linked with dry mouth and dehydration, which increases the risk of developing tooth decay and infections. Saliva is crucial for helping us breakdown food and protecting our teeth due to the proteins and minerals found within it. Without it, the dry environment promotes bacteria and fungi growth and typically produces an odor.

Other conditions that have been known to cause white tongue include oral lichen planus, geographic tongue, oral cancer, and HIV/AIDs.

Although white tongue is typically harmless, if you notice any pain or persistence of white tongue for a prolonged time that does not respond to oral care, be sure to contact your dentist.

It is important to remember to brush your tongue with either a toothbrush or tongue scraper each day to remove all of the plaque and leftover food particles that become trapped between the papilla on the surface of the tongue. Also, staying hydrated is important, especially during these hot summer days!

Lowering Liver Cancer Risk with Good Oral Hygiene

Why is it important to take care of your teeth? Some people may be wondering how their oral hygiene habits affect their overall well-being. There’s increasing awareness that poor oral health is linked to more than just issues found within the mouth. Research has consistently shown us that poor oral health can be linked to heart disease, diabetes, and stroke, just to name a few associations. Now, a recent study conducted at Queen's University Belfast in the United Kingdom has found another possible link between oral health and gastrointestinal cancers, for instance, liver, colon, rectum and pancreatic cancer.

Just about 60,000 people each year in the European Union are killed by liver cancer. This is ranked as the 6thmost common cancer related death, with only an 11% five-year survival rate! The study looked at the oral health of about 469,000 people in the United Kingdom, noting conditions such as loose teeth, gingival and periodontal diseases, missing teeth, and tooth decay. Although the study did not find significant evidence between gastrointestinal cancers and poor oral hygiene, people with poor oral health may have a 75% increase in developing liver cancer according to the study. However, more research is needed to better establish the mechanisms behind this connection. Researchers are interested in investigating the role certain microbes found originally within the mouth, including Fusobacterium nucleatum, may have in liver cancer.

The good news is, with healthy lifestyle habits including diet, exercise, oral hygiene, and avoidance of behaviors including smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, you can lower this risk!

It is important to schedule regular dental visits, and keep up with brushing at least twice a day, and flossing at least once a day to keep your mouth healthy. Keeping your oral health and liver in check also includes eating well and maintaining a nutritious and balanced diet.

Popular "Health" Trends that aren't so Healthy!

From online ads to television commercials, we are surrounded by many popular trends that are intended to improve our overall health. But are these trends truly thinking about your health overall? Often these trendy recommendations leave out the health of your pearly-whites, which play a critical role in the health of your body. Not to mention, you might be wondering are they backed by scientific evidence or just out to get your money? Take a look at these popular trends that could be doing more harm than good:

Juice Cleanses

Juice cleanses have become relatively popular for individuals looking to lose weight or detoxify the body. This diet often is based on drinking only juice from vegetables and fruits and is marketed as a way to help increase vitamin and mineral intake, as well as help improve digestion. However, many of the claimed benefits have not yet been proven scientifically. In addition, juice cleanses are not tooth-friendly because juices typically are high in sugar and can put you at a higher risk for tooth decay. Some fruit juices are also highly acidic, which can wear down your tooth enamel overtime. When consuming acidic beverages it is important to wait to brush until approximately 45 minutes later so that you do not harm your enamel during its weakened state.

Non-Dairy Milk

Almond and soy milk have become advertised as healthy alternatives to milk, but how true is this? Non-dairy milks often are high in sugar, which can be detrimental to your smile. In addition, non-dairy milk may be lacking calcium, which is an essential part of your dental health. Be sure to check the calcium content and aim for buying products with at least 120 milligrams of calcium per 3.4 fluid ounces.

Charcoal Toothpaste

There has been a lot of talk about charcoal toothpaste lately, particularly for its claimed whitening properties. Yet, a recent study showed that charcoal toothpaste can lead to permanently stained teeth. When choosing a toothpaste, the best option is one that contains fluoride, which will help promote enamel remineralization.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Could Apple cider vinegar keep the doctor away? This product has been said to help alleviate bloating and heartburn, lower blood sugar, and help with weight loss. However, according to the University of Chicago Medical Center these claims are not strongly supported by evidence. Not to mention, consuming apple cider vingar can cause enamel erosion due to its acidity.

The Pathogens in Stroke Patients Brains May Surprise You

In the past few years as new research continues to be discovered, it is becoming more recognized that your oral health is a window to your overall health. So much so that new studies are suggesting that the common bacteria found within the mouth have been found in people who have had a stroke.  In fact, the bacteria within your mouth that typically cause inflammation in the form of gingivitis and periodontitis can also lower your body’s immunity against infections, making other systemic issues more severe. It is important to know about the link between the health of your mouth and body. 



According to research published in the Journal of American Heart Association from the University of Tampere, Streptococcus Viridans, a bacteria normaly found within the mouth, was present in the cerebral emboli of people who had a stroke. The study looked at 75 individuals who suffered from a stroke, and is the first study to show the presence of this specific bacteria within ischemic stroke patients. Although this bacteria is typically harmless in the mouth, when it enters the blood stream it has been associated with an increased risk of infection of the cardiovascular system by increasing the likelihood of forming blood clots. Approxmiately 87% of strokes are a result of blood clots within the cerebral artery. 

Prior research has also found other oral bacteria in patients who have experienced a heart attack, endocarditis, ruptured cerebral aneurysms, and arterial and venous thrombosis. 

So, what can you do to protect your oral health? With this knowledge in mind, practicing good oral hygiene habits is necessary to prevent serious illnesses and even increase your lifespan. Visiting your dentist can be the best start to get a check up on your health. Also, make sure you are avoiding harmful habits including smoking and excessive alcohol use.

Charcoal Toothpastes Doing More Harm than Good?

Trending now: Charcoal toothpaste! In the past few years, you may have seen celebrities, advertisements, and Youtube videos along with other social media posts raving about using charcoal to brighten teeth. But, these notions may just be a marketing act. In fact, contrary to the advertisements, charcoal toothpastes may not be the solution for obtaining pearly whites and can also add potential risks to your oral health.



Besides just showing up in foods, beauty products, or in art pencils, toothpastes can be made with the ingredient charcoal too. As it turns out, the history of charcoal for tooth cleaning dates way back to Ancient Greek history! Activated charcoal is made by heating regular charcoal with a special gas, making it more porous. As a result, it can absorb toxins and be used medically to treat accidental poisonings. In addition, past research published in the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) claimed its ability for whitening, combating bad breath, and having anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties. However, the researchers stated that more evidence is needed to ensure the safety and effectiveness of charcoal toothpastes. It is also necessary to consult with a Doctor before using charcoal toothpaste because it may interfere with certain medications being consumed.

According to a review in the British Dental Journal published in May 2019,  activated charcoal may actually contribute to tooth decay and staining rather than preventing it. Based off knowledge presented in a 2017 literature review, researchers found that there is not enough evidence support the safety or efficacy of anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, or anti-viral properties, or tooth whitening claims. Further, most of the marketed charcoal toothpastes do not contain fluoride like other regular toothpastes. Toothpastes containing fluoride help remineralize teeth making tooth enamel stronger, and help prevent tooth decay. Activated charcoal’s absorptive properties could even be inactivating your fluoride intake from other sources. Most importantly, it is also highly abrasive, which despite removing stains could damage the gums and wear down tooth enamel during the process. Got Gingivitis? A Plant-Based Whole Foods Diet May Help

As many of us know, our diet plays a huge role in our overall well-being. You may notice that your body feels differently when you eat certain foods. For instance, eating processed and fast foods often can make you feel less energized. For several reasons, opting for a healthy diet can improve your overall health. In fact, a new study points out that a plant-based whole foods diet may even improve your oral health. Researchers found that an ant-inflammatory plant-based whole food diet reduced gingivitis (inflammation of the gums).



So, what exactly is a plant-based whole foods diet? This diet’s main focus is on consuming fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, seeds and nuts, and to limit intaking processed foods and added sugars. 

The new study, published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, looked at 30 participants with gingivitis. The participants were split randomly into either a control group that was asked not to change their diet, and an experimental group, which was placed on a diet composed mainly of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, vitamin D, antioxidants, plant nitrates, and fibers over a four week time frame. Both groups did not use floss throughout the time period of the study. They found that individuals within the experimental group had significantly less bleeding gums, greater weight loss, as well as an increase in Vitamin D. The amount of plaque recorded for both groups, however, was similar. Researchers believe that the plant-based diet may have the ability to slow the progression of gingivitis. Whereas, the common fast food and high carb diet in America may be promoting inflammation, which plays a significant role in gingivitis and periodontal disease.

But, you may be wondering: can't dietary supplements just do the trick? The American Dietetic Association (ADA) states that choosing nutritious foods is the best way to lower your risk of chronic disease, rather than just relying solely on dietary supplements.

Is there a Genetic Component to my Kid's Tooth Decay?

Our genes make us who we are and seem to play a significant role in many conditions in our lives. However, according to a recent study (“Genetic and Early Life Environmental Influences on Dental Caries Risk: A Twin Study), tooth decay may not be one of the conditions influenced by genetics. But what about your lifestyle habits? Recent research shows that environmental factors rather than genetics could be the main culprit influencing the development of tooth decay.



The study done at Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Australia drew several interesting conclusions. By analyzing 173 sets of identical and non-identical twins from pregnancy up to age six, they found that genes did not impact the prevalence of tooth decay. Identical twins with the same genetic makeup were not found to have the same amount of tooth decay. Instead, outside factors such as fluoride availability, diet, and oral hygiene habits may be playing the most important role in the onset of dental cavities. 

In addition, the study recorded and observed the mother's weight, health conditions, medication use, vitamin D levels, stress, alcohol intake and smoking habits during pregnancy through a questionnaire. The researchers discovered a link between the mother’s health and habits during pregnancy with the susceptibility of dental caries. Obesity in pregnancy was associated with a higher risk of tooth decay in children. Unfortunately, in the United States, tooth decay is the #1 most common childhood disease. Even in Australia the researchers found that one in every three children have tooth decay as early as their first day starting school. But, the good news is, tooth decay is highly preventable! It is important to start practicing good oral hygiene habits and live a healthy lifestyle from an early age to help protect your smile and body. This way the risk of developing other systemic issues such as diabetes and cardiovascular problems can be minimized.

My Lungs, Mouth, and Inhaler: What to Know

It's that time of the year where blooming flowers and warm breezes take over and are welcomed by many. However, for some, this time of the year triggers asthma and allergies! Unfortunately, individuals with asthma may not share the same joy in this seasonal change. Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that is characterized by airway obstruction, coughing, and wheezing caused by constriction of the lung bronchi. But, that's not all! Since the body is all interconnected, this respiratory condition also has been found to increase your risk of developing gum disease (gingivitis and periodontal disease), tooth decay, malocclusion (overbite, overate, posterior crossbite), oral candidiasis, dry mouth, and oral sores. In particular, these conditions are often more prominent and aggressive in children. A contributing factor is that children's teeth have thinner enamel than adults, and consequently are more susceptible to harm and breakdown caused by bacteria that cause cavities. Here's how you can lower these risks and keep your mouth healthy so that it can last you a lifetime:

A recent study analyzing 40 children with asthma looked at the prevalence of dental cavities, gingival bleeding, the pH of saliva, composition of bacteria within the mouth, in addition to assessing their oral hygiene habits. It was found that the children with asthma experienced dry mouth, had at least 5-8 cavities, and a rapid formation of plaque. The children also had an increased acidity of pH within the mouth, which puts them at a higher risk of cavities and the fungal infection, candidiasis. Another study reported that individuals with asthma had approximately a 19% increased risk of suffering from periodontitis.

Fortunately, avoiding gum disease can be achieved by practicing proper oral hygiene techniques, including using a fluoride toothpaste, mouth rinse, brushing and flossing regularly, and making regular visits to the dentist. If you notice red puffy gums, bleeding with brushing or flossing, or persistent bad breath, these can be early signs of gum disease.  It is also important to always bring your inhaler to dental and medical appointments to ensure your safety in the case of an acute asthma attack.

The Effect of Asthma Medications

The medications taken to combat asthma also play a role in negatively impacting the oral cavity. This is because the protective mucous membrane within the mouth is less effective/reduced in individuals with asthma, lowering the body's immune system. Dry mouth is a major consequence of many medications, which allows for plaque build-up and bacteria accumulation that contribute to dental cavities, bad breath, and gum disease.

Inhaled corticosteroids, including Advair and Azmacort, may cause oral thrush, dental cavities, oral ulcers, and hoarseness. In addition, Albuterol, a medication used to treat bronchospasm, can have side effects including oral thrush, dry mouth, increased heart rate, high blood pressure, throat irritation, and nausea.

Tips for Managing Oral Health with Asthma

  • Rinsing with water after you using your inhaler can help avoid developing an oral fungal infection.
  • Stay hydrated in order to help combat dry mouth.
  • Keep your dentist informed about your medications and medical conditions. Make sure your dentist knows if you have asthma and what medications you are taking so that your health can be managed properly.
  • Manage allergies. Both asthma and allergies typically flare-up together. Managing both properly can help prevent mouth-breathing and dry mouth.
  • Practice good dental hygiene.

The Hard Hitting Truth: Play Safe!

As the sun begins to peak through the clouds and warmer weather approaches, it is a concern for many parents to protect their little ones from injuries as they gear up for outdoor activities this spring. In fact, this time of the year numerous patients suffer with head, mouth, and facial injuries because of sports accidents. Did you know, according to research published in the Journal of American Dental Association, teeth injured from a traumatic accident may never completely heal? This could result in extra dental treatment costs and long-term problems within the oral cavity. Luckily, with the right equipment and information, these accidents can be prevented and your smile can remain safe and sound! Each April, National Facial Protection Month, sponsored by the Academy for Sports DentistryAmerican Academy of Pediatric DentistryAmerican Academy of PediatricsAmerican Dental AssociationAmerican Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the American Association of Orthodontists, reminds us to play hard, smart, and safe by taking the necessary safety measures to prevent sports-related accidents.

Prevention is key, take a look at how you can protect your pearly whites, and what you need to do if an accident does occur:

Approximately 80 percent of dental trauma occurs on the upper two front teeth. Unfortunately, mouthguard use in sports is very low, with about 67% of parents reporting that their child does not use a mouthguard. In addition, 27% of the same surveyed parents reported that their child had an emergency room visit due to a sports-related accident.

Baseball, soccer, basketball and football make up a good majority (80%) of sports-related emergency room visits for kids aged between 5 and 14, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, facial injuries can occur at any age and regardless of the sport!

Mouthguards are known to protect your face, and lower the risk of broken teeth and damage to the lips, tongue, jaw, and surrounding structures of the face. Your teeth are at a 60% higher risk of being damaged when a mouthguard is not worn for protection. Therefore, make sure that all who participate in sports or recreational activities own and wear a fitted mouthguard.

Take a look at the different types of mouthguards available:

Custom-made Mouthguard:

A custom-made mouthguard is made by the dentist to the exact fit of your mouth. As a result, it provides the most protection and comfort, but is typically more expensive than the store-bought mouthguards. It covers all of the surfaces of the teeth and cushions the jaw.

Boil and Bite Mouthguard:

Boil-and-Bite mouthguards are placed in boiling water and then placed on the teeth to form the exact shape. It can be found at sports stores and other department stores. It is, however, less comfortable than the custom-made mouthguard and often wears down quicker and needs to be replaced often.

Commercial Mouthguard:

Found at several department stores, commercial mouthguards are the least expensive, but is the least effective because it cannot be shaped to the exact fit of your mouth. It is made out of rubber or polyvinyl and comes in generic small, medium, and large sizes.

Be sure to keep your mouthguard clean by rinsing and brushing it to remove any bacteria build up on the mouth guard.

If you or your child happen to be injured in the mouth, here's what you need to know:

Fractured/Broken tooth

  • If your tooth chips or falls out and you can find the broken piece, store it immediately preferably in Hanks Balanced Salt Solution, or in milk, or water. You can also try to gently push an extruded tooth back into the socket after carefully rinsing. See your dentist immediately within 1 hour because time is critical if it can be placed back in position. When handling the tooth only hold it by the crown and not at the root.

Facial cuts

  • Cover the wound with a clean dressing and apply pressure. Visit an emergency room if wounds are severe.

Cuts within the mouth

  • Rinse the mouth gently with cold water and apply pressure to cut with gauze. Immediately seek emergency care to evaluate for jaw injury. If you notice swelling, apply ice. Also, stick to soft food diet. Seek dental care or medical attention if to improvement occurs after a day.

Is Your Body Trying to ask for Vitamins and Minerals?

It's been ingrained in us that a healthy and well-balanced diet is necessary for normal daily functioning and growth. However, it may not be that simple to realize when we're deficient in certain vitamins and minerals, even when we're eating healthy! Vitamins and minerals play a major role in carrying out the normal functions of our bodies, including synthesizing  tissues, removing waste products, and being necessary precursors for enzymes. Therefore, deficiencies can result in several health problems, so it is important to know what signs to look for in order to meet the body's needs! For instance, oral signs such as burning tongue and mouth sores, feeling tired after a good night's rest, having a pale appearance, or brittle fingernails can all be signs of particular nutrient deficiencies. In fact, it has been reported that when the proper nutrients are not consumed in adequate amounts, both physical and mental issues such as skin problems, bone abnormalities, and even dementia could be negative consequences.

Take a look at the signs of various vitamin deficiencies and how to make these symptoms improve or be gone altogether:

Severe hair loss

If you notice that you are losing more than the typical 100 strands of hair a day, this could be a sign of a deficiency in the minerals iron and zinc, in addition to the fatty acids linoleum acid and alpha-linolenic acid, and vitamins such as biotin (Vitamin B7) and Niacin (Vitamin B3):

  • Iron is necessary for the production of DNA, which is present in hair follicles.
  • Zinc is needed for the synthesis of proteins necessary for hair growth.
    • A deficiency in both iron and zinc can lead to hair loss or cause the hair to stop growing. A diet rich in meat, fish, eggs, legumes, dark leafy greens, nuts, seeds and whole grains can help manage a deficiency in iron and zinc.
  • Linoleic acid (LA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) are integral to hair growth.
    • A diet comprising leafy vegetables, nuts, whole grains, and vegetable oils all offer a source of LA. ALA can be found in chia seeds and soy nuts.
  • Niacin (vitamin B3): Niacin is needed for keeping healthy strong hair.
  • Biotin (vitamin B7): Biotin helps form thick hair and stimulates hair growth.
    • Meat, fish, dairy, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds and leafy greens are rich in both niacin and biotin.

You may notice that there are also a lot of supplements advertised for hair loss prevention that include these nutrients. These supplements should be taken at the discretion of your health care provider, as there is limited research on their effects.

Brittle nails

A sign of brittle or splitting nails could be your body telling you that it is in need of iron or biotin.

  • Iron: In addition to brittle nails, a deficiency in iron can include fatigue, pale skin, chest pain, constant sensation of cold, inflamed or sore tongue, and dizziness just to name a few.
    • Iron-rich foods include in meat, poultry, seafood, and spinach.
  • Biotin: biotin deficiencies are rare, but can present as brittle hair or nails, in addition to fatigue, and muscle pain. Risk factors of a biotin deficiency include pregnancy, smoking, alcoholism, Crohn's disease, and individuals on some anti-seizure medications or prolonged antibiotic use. Consumption of raw egg whites can also lead to a deficiency in biotin because  the protein avidin within raw egg whites reduces the absorption of biotin.
    •  Egg yolks, organ meats, fish, meat, dairy, nuts, seeds, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, yeast, whole grains and bananas are good sources of biotin.

Mouth ulcers or cracks in the corners of the mouth

Mouth ulcers, also known as canker sores, and cracking around the corners of the mouth have been linked to deficiencies including iron, B1, B2, B6 and B12.

  • Iron
  • Thiamin (Vitamin B1) plays a role in maintining the nervous system and the release of energy from food.
  • Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) helps keep the skin, eyes and nervous system healthy, and helps the body release energy from food.
  • Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6) is responsible for the storage of protein and carbohydrates absorbed from food, and the formation of hemoglobin in red blood cells. A deficiency in B6 is typically rare.
    • Thiamin, riboflavin and pyridoxine can all be found in whole grains, poultry, meat, fish, eggs, dairy, organ meats, legumes, green vegetables, starchy vegetables, nuts and seeds.

In addition, cracking at the corners of the mouth could be caused by angular cheilitis (inflammation and an accumulation of microorganisms, particularly Candida albicans, at the corners of the mouth).

Bleeding Gums

Bleeding gums could be a result of several things, including gingivitis due to bacterial plaque, medications, brushing technique, and poor diet or oral hygiene habits. In addition, it could be due to a lack of vitamin C in your diet.

  • Vitamin C: Vitamin C plays a role in healing wounds, your immunity, and also helps prevent cell damage. If the deficiency is severe, the condition known as scurvy could develop. Symptoms of scurvy include tooth loss, weakness, fatigue, and muscle soreness.
    • Citrus fruit, guava, kiwi, broccoli, dark green leafy vegetables (broccoli, spinach, lettuce, kale), berries, tomatoes, cabbage, and brussel sprouts all are sources of Vitamin C.

Burning tongue

The sensation of a burning tongue or feet could be a result of a deficiency in Vitamin B12.

  • Vitamin B12: B12 is known to help produce hemoglobin in red blood cells, and is also needed for the proper function of the digestive system. Vegans are at an increased risk of B12 deficiency because meats and dairy products are common sources of good amounts of B12. Signs of a deficiency in vitamin B12 often include damage to your nervous system, memory changes, and can sometimes mimic anemia.
    • Vitamin B12 an be found in meats, shellfish, poultry, fish, dairy, almond milk, nutritional yeast, and fortified soy and coconut milk.

Muscle cramps

If you notice that you begin having muscle cramps, your body could be craving potassium. A deficiency in potassium is typically caused by loss of fluid (excessive sweat, vomit, diarrhea).

  • Potassium: Potassium is known to help build muscle and protein.
    • A good source of potassium can be found in sweet potatoes, bananas, avocados, and coconut water.

 

So, you may be wondering, "will dietary supplements help get me all of the nutrients I need?" The best way to ensure that you are getting adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals is to make sure your diet includes each major food group, rather than relying only on dietary supplements. Should you be Tongue Scraping?

As you walk down the oral hygiene isle at your local drug store and see the limitless brands of toothpastes, mouthwashes, and toothbrushes, you may have noticed an item labeled tongue scraper. You may be wondering, “Is it really necessary to brush my tongue?” According to evidence based research, yes it's necessary! Bacteria, dead cells, leftover food debris, and toxins can accumulate on your tongue overtime, which can contribute to bad breath, also known as halitosis. By the end of the day you may notice a thick film coating on your tongue that often ranges in color from clear, white, yellow, or green. According to research, around 85% of all halitosis cases originate from bacteria within the mouth, and a surprising 50% are caused by the debris leftover on the tongue.

Read on to learn about the benefits of tongue scraping for maintaining your oral health:

The good news is, tongue scrapers can quickly and efficiently remove extra particles from the surface of your tongue. They are inexpensive and can be found at many drug stores or online sites. They can be made of plastic or different metals (copper, stainless steel), both effective in removing debris from the tongue. However, plastic tongue scrapers are typically cheaper but may not last as long.

Your tongue can also be cleaned with a regular toothbrush, however, research has reported that a tongue scraper is more effective at removing volatile sulfur compounds, the common culprits of causing bad breath, from the tongue than using just a soft-bristled toothbrush on the tongue. So, after brushing the surfaces of your teeth with a toothbrush and flossing, add a tongue scraper to your morning and evening oral hygiene routine to help enhance your dental health.

Here's how tongue scraping can positively impact your oral health:

  1. Tongue scraping can help eliminate bad breath

  • Bad breath is never fun to deal with, and can take a toll on a person’s relationships and self-esteem. In addition to brushing your teeth, tongue scraping has been found to remove the oral bacteria that typically causes bad breath.
  1. Tongue scraping benefits your taste buds

  • The build up of debris often leads to taste buds becoming less effective. By removing the debris from the tongue, you are better able to taste bitter, sweet, salty, and sour sensations.
  1. Help boost your immunity

  • Tongue scraping can help prevent toxins from being reabsorbed into your body and help improve your immune system. It has been found to lower the presence of Strep. Mutans and Lactobacilli bacteria, which are known to cause tooth decay and bad breath.
  1. Improve the appearance of your tongue

  • Sometimes the buildup of debris can cause your tongue to have a white coating, which tongue scraping can help remove and restore your tongue back to its normal pink color.

 

To perform tongue scraping, stick your tongue out and place the tongue scraper at the back of your tongue and gently scrape forward along the surfaces of your tongue as often as needed. One to two scrapes in the same area typically suffices. After each scrape, you can use a water or tissue to remove the debris from the scraper. Try to avoid placing the tongue scraper too far back to prevent stimulating a gag reflex. Also be mindful of how much pressure you are applying when tongue scraping. Be sure to use gentle strokes to avoid causing any harm. The entire process typically takes less than 2 minutes and can be done throughout the day, especially after meals is a great time.

Be sure you are keeping up with brushing at least twice a day for at least two minutes, flossing at least once a day to remove plaque and food particles from hard to reach areas in-between teeth, and keeping up with regular dental visits. It is important to drink a lot of water, which will not only help prevent dry mouth, but also help eliminate bad breath.

If you notice any white patches in your mouth or unusual discoloration, bumps, or sores, be sure to let your dentist know so that it can be evaluated. This may be a sign of oral thrush or other conditions such as those pictured below, which can be managed under your dentist’s supervision.

Donating Blood Benefits You, Too!

A whopping 5 million Americans are in need of a blood transfusion every year - that's a lot of blood! It's common to hear about the positive impact donated blood has on the lives of those in need , but what about the benefits for the individuals donating the blood? In addition to helping save lives across the world, there are health benefits both psychologically and physically for donors, too! According to the Mental Health Foundation, donating blood can help improve your emotional state by reducing stress, and eliminating negative feelings. Not to mention, giving blood has been found to improve cardiovascular health, and lower the risk of cancer, obesity, and hemochromatosis. It also helps in lowering the risk of damage to the liver and pancreas. Here's how:

Lower Risk of Heart Disease

Donating blood at least once a year has been found to lower the risk of heart problems such as a heart attack because it helps lower the blood's viscosity so that there is more room for blood flow. Research also shows that it lowers the average total cholesterol, iron stores, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (also known as the "bad" cholesterol), which all protect against cardiovascular disease.

Lower Risk of Cancer

Research reports that the risk of cancer was lowered blood donors with medical conditions including hemochromatosis and peripheral arterial disease (PAD). They found the risk to be lowered particularly to cancers linked to high iron levels, including liver, colon, lung, esophageal, and stomach cancer. Increased iron levels in the body can lead to iron storage in organs such as the heart, liver and pancreas. As a result, the risk of cirrhosis, liver failure, damage to the pancreas, and heart problems increase. By donating blood, this helps maintain iron levels and reduce the risks of damage to vital organs. Plus, donating bleed has also been found to lower inflammatory markers according to a 2016 study.

Free health Screening

Before donating blood you'll receive a free health screening, which although doesn't equate to your regular primary care visit, it can still help you keep an eye on your blood pressure, body temperature, pulse, and hemoglobin levels. This way you can detect any discrepancies that may need attention to ensure a healthy body. Your blood will also be tested for several diseases including hepatitis B and C, HIV, West Nile Virus and more.

Once you've donated blood the body begins to produce new blood cells to compensate for the blood loss, which helps maintain good health.

Save your Child from the Most Common Chronic Childhood Disease

Parents try their hardest to keep their kids from experiencing harm and pain. It can be heartbreaking to see your child or loved one suffer from tooth aches and tooth decay. No matter the age, babies, kids, teens, adults, and elders can unfortunately develop dental cavities. It is commonly known that tooth decay develops as bacteria feed off of the left-over food particles on our teeth by producing acids that wear down tooth enamel. But, you may be wondering, "how is tooth decay possible for babies who aren't even consuming solid foods?" You may have heard of the term, baby bottle tooth decay, which is a leading factor for a high rate of cavities in babies who particularly go to sleep with a bottle of milk or juice in their crib.  Milk, which we know to be good for bone growth and development, does contain sugar so when it is constantly in contact on baby teeth throughout the night, it can lead to the development of cavities and future oral health problems for little ones. Baby bottle tooth decay can also be a sign that nutrients and natural healthy bacteria that help fight cavities may be out of balance in your child. When baby teeth become decayed, not only can it affect incoming permanent teeth, but also can negatively impact chewing, drinking, speaking, and the growth of the mouth. The decay may present itself with this appearance:

It is therefore important to develop good oral hygiene habits and nutritional diet from a early age.  Our oral microbiome, or the normal friendly bacteria within our mouths, are needed to help us fight infections and keep the harmful bacteria from attacking our immune system. For instance, Streptococcus mutans, is typically the main bacterial culprit in causing tooth decay. Babies often get a load of healthy probiotics through breastfeeding and gains vitamins including A, D, and K through breastmilk.

We must encourage our children to eat healthy and also monitor their brushing and oral habits to help ensure strong teeth and a healthier overall body. For children under the age of 3, a smear of fluoride toothpaste on a child sized toothbrush is recommended for toothbrushing.

It is recommended that your child have their first dental visit by age 1 or within 6 months of their first baby tooth erupting. This is very important as the enamel of baby teeth is not as strong as adult's. Be sure to see if the community you live in has fluoridated water. Fluoride, which can be applied at dental visits, and found in toothpastes, and natural water, helps fight tooth decay and remineralize tooth enamel. In addition, try to switch your child from a bottle to a regular cup as soon as possible because the liquid is less likely to sit for a long time on teeth.

If your child has extensive tooth decay but the tooth is still deemed restorable by the dentist, stainless steel crowns are the recommended treatment option by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Otherwise, extraction and space maintenance may be required.  Losing a baby tooth earlier than expected can lead to crowding when the permanent teeth come in, as well as other oral issues. Tooth decay can also surprisingly be passed from the mother or caregiver to an infant or child through saliva. Be sure to keep feeding utensils and pacifiers clean.

Save your child from experiencing tooth pain, trouble sleeping, oral infections, growth issues, and time away from school for additional dental treatments that could be prevented.

The Fight Against the Opioid Crisis

The opioid crisis is a major public health emergency that has sadly resulted in the loss of many lives. According to the (NIH) National Institute on Drug Abuse, the deaths from opioid use increased from 18,515 in 2007 to 47,600 deaths in 2017. It has been found that for every day that passes, about 130 people in America die from an opioid overdose. Opioids, including Vicodin, Percocet, Morphine, Codeine, and Oxycodone, to name a few, are categoriezed as narcotics, and can be an effective pain management option prescribed by medical professionals after a procedure like wisdom teeth extractions. However, abuse of opioids has become a dangerous issue, with almost 29% of patients misusing them when prescribed. Opioids do provide pain-relief, but they also trigger your body to release the hormone dopamine, which in turn can lead to addition due to the experience of pleasure signaled to your brain. Even so, abuse of opioids can lead individuals to abuse other dangerous drugs such as heroin. Misusing opioids can lead to depressed airways and ultimately death.

Awareness is a key way to help prevent this epidemic. Dentists and oral surgeons write approximately 12% of opioids prescriptions for pain relief after certain procedures. This percentage is expected to decrease now as combinations of Ibuprofen, Tylenol, and other over-the-counter drugs have been shown to be as effective as opioids in relieving pain after dental procedures. Opioids can only be prescribed for up to 7 days in Massachusetts, which was the first state to adopt this law in 2016. It is important to update your dentist with any current medical conditions, medications, and if you have a past addiction history.

If it is decided by the healthcare professional and the patient to use an opioid for treatment, make sure to ask when and how much you should be taking, the objective of the medication, and the risks involved. Be sure to also store your prescription away in a safe place out of reach of other individuals to help reduce the risk of potential abuse by others. You may also find that you do not need the entire amount of pills prescribed. To dispose of unused pills, be sure to follow these guidelines:

Bacteria's Pathway from Mouth to Brain

It's very reasonable to think that gum disease will only impact your gums, and therefore only cause issues within your mouth. But, surprisingly, the bacteria associated with chronic gum disease, Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis), has been found in the brains of individuals with Alzheimer's disease.

At the University of Louisville School of Dentistry, researchers found more convincing evidence on the association between  P. gingivalis with the development of Alzheimer's disease. They also found that a molecular therapy designed to potentially attack bad pathogens involved in Alzheimer's disease is also linked with periodontitis, a more severe form of gum disease. When studying animals, it was found that P. gingivalis found orally ended up colonizing the brain and increased the production of amyloid beta plaques that are commonly found in people with Alzheimer's disease. In addition, it was found that P. gingivalis releases a toxic enzyme known as gingipains into the neurons of people affected by Alzheimer's disease. Interestly, the researchers designed a molecule to block the harmful gingipains, which led to less P. gingivalis within the brain, a blockage of the production of amyloid beta plaques, less neuroinflammation, and a protective effect against neurons within the hippocampus, which is the part of the brain that is involved with memory. The research team is working on further research and clinical trials to determine a causal relationship between P. gingivalis and morbidity of Alzheimer's disease.

To maintain a healthy body it is thus imperative that our mouths remain healthy as well. There has been strong evidence linking bacteria within the mouth that can cause inflammation and damage systemically throughout the body. Gum disease can be prevented by keeping routine good oral hygiene habits.

Love your Heart: American Heart Month

The heart is an amazing muscle, beating up to about 100,000 times a day and keeping us alive to spread love to those we encounter! That's why it's extremely important to keep your heart healthy and to be informed about heart disease. Each February, awareness about heart health is spread nationally in celebration of American Heart Month. What many may not know is that heart disease isn't just a disease that affects older adults. It can happen at any age, and there are many factors that can put you at risk. Here's what you need to know:

To start off on a positive note, heart disease can be prevented with healthy lifestyle choices. Sadly, about 1 in 4 deaths in the United States are a result of heart disease in both men and women. Many individuals may experience at least one of the top 3 risks for heart disease, which include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking.

So, what exactly is heart disease? Coronary heart disease (CHD) occurs when plaque accumulates overtime inside of the coronary arteries that normally help supply oxygenated blood to the heart. This buildup of plaque is also known as atherosclerosis. The plaque buildup is dangerous because they can eventually harden or even burst. If the plaque hardens, the blood flow to the heart is consequently reduced as the coronary artery walls narrow. If the plaque bursts, this can result in a blood clot that can also block blood flow from reaching the heart. Once there is less blood flow to the heart, a stroke or heart attack can happen. Pain in the chest, shoulders, jaw, arms, and neck can be a common sign of a heart attack. Your heart eventually becomes weaker over time with CHD, and could result in heart failure or irregular heart rhythms.

What's the Scoop on Floss & Toxicity?

Did you hear the news? It seems like floss was all the talk when news broke out about Oral-B Glide floss potentially containing toxic chemicals. A recent study published in the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology claimed that flossing was not safe due to the Per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) found in certain floss brands. So what's PFAS? These chemicals have been linked to some health problems, but are used in a variety of products sold in the market, ranging from cooking appliances, electronics, clothing, and food wrappers for the purpose of adding water resistance and non-stick properties.

But, don't be so quick to quit flossing! Here's why:

Oral-B Glide does contain Teflon, which is within the family of PFAS. However, the study did not equate the presence of PFAS in floss to toxicity problems. The study measured chemicals in 178 middle-aged women and asked them about their exposure to certain products. The study did not link the amount of PFAS to any toxic effects, and also did not specify what product sources the PFAS directly came from. In fact, even though some the women who reported using Glide floss were found to have higher levels of PFAS, the manufacturer states that significant levels of PFAS were not found within the actual floss. Plus the data was too broad to yield conclusive results, because some individuals who used the floss had lower levels of PFAS found in their bloodstream than those who never used the floss. There was also no mention of how frequently the participants used the floss. Participants of the study were only asked if they "ever" or "never" used non-stick cookware, dental floss, or ate food from cardboard containers.

Not to mention, there is significant evidence that flossing does improve your overall health by helping to prevent oral disease. Flossing is a key step in keeping great dental health and is necessary to remove the microscopic bacterial plaque that is located between the tight contacts in-between our teeth. There are also a variety of flosses available that do not contain PFAS. So, make sure you don't give up on flossing, or else a whole new collection of problems can arise!

Are Your Gums Affected by your Blood Sugar Levels?

Diabetes, which impacts about 30 million people in the United States, surprisingly doesn't just affect your blood sugar. Research has consistently showed that gum disease, including both gingivitis and periodontitis, is linked with diabetes. The relationship between gum disease and diabetes works both ways: individuals with diabetes have a higher chance of developing gum disease, and people with severe gum disease are more prone to have issues controlling their blood glucose levels.

Early stages of gum problems begin as gingivitis, also described as inflammation of the gums. As bacteria invade the gum pockets and inflammation remains, gum recession and bone loss begin to occur in the more severe stages of gum disease, known as periodontitis.  People who have diabetes unfortunately have a a harder time clearing bacterial infections, which they are also more at risk for developing. That's why having good oral hygiene practices is so important, especially if you have diabetes or a current diagnosis of periodontal disease. If you're a diabetic, one of the best things to do to maintain overall health is to keep your blood sugar levels controlled. The bulk of your teeth are composed of dentin, which is covered but your enamel on the outside, your gums, and also by cementum on the roots. Inside the dentin is a lot of nerve endings, so once dentin is exposed your nerves respond painfully to hot and cold!

Numerous factors can cause your dentin to become exposed, take a look:

  • Periodontal disease: Gum disease is a common cause of tooth sensitivity. Over time if plaque builds up on your teeth, your gums can become inflamed leading to gingivitis. If not treated, periodontal disease can arise which leads to gum recession and exposed roots and dentin. Be sure to keep up with regular brushing twice a day, flossing, rinsing, and dental check-ups to ensure that your gums stay healthy.
  • Improper brushing techniques: It's true, there is a science to brushing! Brushing aggressively can cause your enamel to wear down and eventually expose your nerve endings within dentin. Make sure you have a soft bristled tooth brush and that you are brushing toward the gum line lightly to remove bacteria within your gum pockets. 
  • Teeth clenching and grinding:  Someone may have told you that you grind your teeth at night, or you may notice that you're clenching your teeth throughout the day. Clenching and grinding can cause your enamel to wear down and also cause headaches and cracks within your teeth. Let your dentist know if you are clenching or grinding and treatment options such as a night guard can be discussed.
  • Tooth decay: If you begin experiencing cold sensitivity on a regular basis, it is important to let your dentist know because it could be a sign of tooth decay. Tooth decay and fillings that have cracked can cause exposure of dentin and result in tooth sensitivity.
  • Tooth whitening/dental treatment: Sometime bleaching agents and recent dental procedures such as fillings and crowns can cause temporary sensitivity. Be sure to let your dentist know when you begin experiencing sensitivity.
  • Acidic diet: Foods and beverages with high acid content, including sodas, coffee, juice, pickles, etc., can cause enamel erosion and exposure of dentin.
To help your winter go smoothly, when going outside try breathing through your nose as much as possible so that the cold air has less contact with your teeth. Make sure that you are bundled up when going outside. Fluoride rinses and toothpastes geared to help with sensitivity can also help decrease your pain to cold. Your dentist may recommend root canal treatment if the pulp inside the tooth is infected, or a procedure to cover your root surfaces to help improve gum recession.

How Does Your Cold/Flu Affect Your Mouth?

Catching a cold or the flu can be one of the worst things that come with the cold weather during winter. The (CDC) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that adults typically get a cold 2-3 times a year! A lot of challenges come with being sick, including trouble sleeping, eating, and just going about your normal daily activities. With a sore throat, stuffy or runny nose, and a box of tissues by your side, you may be looking to cough medicine and nasal decongestants to hide the symptoms. But, did you ever wonder how your cold or the medicines to treat them impact your teeth and mouth?  Here's some things to keep in mind in order to keep your body and mouth healthy while combatting a cold:

Stuffy Nose & Dry Mouth

It's a real struggle when you cannot breathe through your nose, especially when you're trying to get a good night's rest. As a result, you have to breathe through your mouth, which can cause you to experience dry mouth. Dry mouth occurs when there is less saliva flow, which can also occur from taking nasal decongestants like sudafed to remedy your stuffy nose. Unfortunately, dry mouth not only makes it hard to swallow, it can also impact your mouth by promoting bacterial growth. So, when taking nasal decongestants to help your cold, stay hydrated with water and chewing xylitol-containing gum can help stimulate saliva flow. You can also try using a humidifier in the room you sleep in.

Sinus & Tooth Pain 

Another obstacle that you may face as a result of being sick is tenderness and pain around your sinuses as a result of sinusitis. This can cause you to feel like you have a toothache in your upper jaw since they are near your sinuses. Some signs of sinusitis include a yellow colored mucous drainage, and pressure near your mid-face. Fortunately, this experience should improve once your cold clears up.

Cough Drops/Syrup & Throat Lozenges

Here's the scoop on cough syrup, cough drops and sore throat lozenges:  most of the time these products contain sugar for flavor and can be damaging to your teeth as they are held in your mouth for long periods of time. Not to mention, cough syrups are sticky and can remain on teeth and cause harm to your enamel. Try to look for pills, sugar-free cough drops, and sore throat lozenges as these are best for your oral health! Be sure to also keep your regular oral care routine brushing, flossing, and rinsing.

Orange Juice

Orange juice is loaded with vitamin C to help your immune system fight your cold. Due to the acidity which can weaken your tooth enamel, try drinking orange juice in one sitting during a meal, and drink water afterwards to help protect your tooth from the acid.

As you fight a cold/flu keep your dental health in mind and replace your toothbrush once you feel better so you can start fresh!

Festive Stress Taking a Toll on Your Mouth?

As we approach the holidays, it can be an exciting, yet stressful time as we prepare to decorate, shop, and entertain for our loved ones. Even traveling, finances, or just having a large to-do list can add stress to your body and oral health. Sometimes you may not notice the negative impact that stress is causing to your teeth. Take a look at these common stressors and how they could be harmful to your smile:

Snoring

Snoring does not only cause loud noises at night time-It could also be causing issues with your oral health! Snoring occurs when there is not enough air moving through the throat and nose while sleeping. Snoring could be a result of many conditions, and some risk factors include being male, 40 years of age or older, family history of snoring, and pregnancy. A main complication of snoring is dry mouth. Dry mouth occurs when there is a lack of saliva, which is necessary for neutralizing acids made by bacteria within the mouth, and for moistening your gums and teeth. When there is a lack of saliva you may develop oral problems such as bad breath (halitosis), burning mouth syndrome, cavities, gingivitis, or mouth sores. Depending on the cause, interventions can include an oral appliance, weight loss, or a reduction in alcohol or smoking.

Tooth Grinding

A commonly known issue impacting your teeth is called bruxism, also known as tooth grinding. This often occurs during your sleep which can make it hard for you not to notice. In addition, jaw clenching can also cause similar effects including wearing your enamel down, gum recession, and weakening the supporting structures in your mouth that keep your teeth in place. Not to mention, it can also break or chip existing fillings in your mouth. Grinding and clenching are often due to anxiety or stress, but can also be caused by an abnormal bite. Some of the signs that can clue you in that you may be clenching or grinding include a sore jaw when you wake up in the morning, or your partner may notice clicking sounds during your sleep. Not to worry though, there are treatment options that can fix this. A night guard may be suggested, or relaxation methods including exercise or other stress management interventions may be advised by your dentist to prevent damaging your pearly whites.

Depression

Depression is a common condition for many individuals, and it can come and go in spurts during a person's life. It is important to talk with a Doctor or someone who can help if it begins to interfere with daily life including with the care of your oral and overall health.

Holiday stressors are real! Stay stress-free this holiday and be sure to keep up on health. Brushing, flossing, and making sure your scheduling your regular dental check-ups is particularly important during the holidays when lots of sweets are involved!

Could There Be Bacteria On Your Retainer?

We all know the importance of brushing our teeth to keep bacteria away in order to preserve the health of our teeth. But many who wear clear aligners or retainers to help keep teeth straight may not know that they also need to keep bacteria away from these appliances to keep their teeth healthy. Retainers are commonly instructed to be worn after having braces to correct one’s bite so that the teeth do not shift out of the correct position over time. Beware of the myth: Retainers are bacteria-free so long as you brush your teeth twice a day and do not eat with the retainer on. The truth is that bacteria and plaque can easily accumulate on your retainer whether eating or not, and it is therefore recommended to clean retainers every time you brush your teeth. Here are some ways you can keep your retainer clean, some interesting new research, and what can happen if you don't clean your retainer:

"What signs indicate that my retainer isn't clean?"

If your retainer hasn't been cleaned regularly, you may start to notice a smell or bad taste from the retainer. You may also start seeing a cloudy film on the retainer or white spots, which could indicate tartar/mineral buildup that can cause dental cavities. Retainers may even break or crack due to bacteria.

"How should I clean my retainer?"

Be sure to drink plenty of water, which can help prevent bacterial growth, dry mouth, and damage to the retainer. Acidic drinks like soda and sports drinks can negatively impact not only your teeth, but your retainer also!

Retainers should be cleaned with a soft-brisltled toothbrush, every time you brush your teeth. In addition you can use a cotton swab to clean deep grooves and ridges. Check with your dentist about soaking your retainer for about 20 minutes or the instructed amount of time in a denture or retainer cleaner, for instance Efferdent or Polident. Rinsing with non-alcoholic mouthwash and cold for about 3 minutes can also help fight bacteria found on the retainer. Make sure to avoid placing your retainer in hot temperature water because it can distort the retainer. Also, gently scrub and clean your retainer case, which can  harbor bacteria.

"What if I don't clean my retainer?"

If you don’t clean your retainer, it will become the home of bacteria including Streptococcus that can breakdown your enamel. In addition, the opportunistic pathogen, Candida albicans, a yeast which is normally found within the mouth may cause an infection known as oral thrush. These infections may negatively impact your health particularly if you are immunocompromised.

Researchers are now looking at additional ways to help fight the bacteria that are wearing down tooth enamel and the plastics in retainers. Published in May 2018 in the journal ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, researchers created a layered film with stronger materials that are hydrophilic (love water) and applied it to dental retainers, which helped prevent the bacteria from sticking to the retainers. They found that the growth of bacteria went down by 75%.

Overall, it is important to know that keeping a clean retainer is equally as important as keeping your teeth clean!

Losing Teeth? This May be a Sign of Malnutrition

November 19th, 2018

As we age our health becomes increasingly important, especially as our body's begin to change. According to new research performed at Rutgers University, older men and women are at a higher chance of experiencing oral health problems and malnutrition. The inability to eat foods with healthy nutrients can lead to a decline in function and quality of life.

The study looked at 107 senior patients at  Rutgers School of Dental Medicine from 2015 to 2016. Within their health records, researchers found that greater than 25% of the patients were malnourished or at risk for malnutrition. Particularly individuals who had between 10 to 19 teeth had increased rates of weight loss, less food intake, and experienced dementia or depression compared to those without nutritional problems.

Problems within the oral cavity causing pain or trouble chewing could result in less food intake leading to malnutrition, however, further research needs to be done to determine the association between tooth loss and malnutrition. Nutrient-rich foods are often hard, such as nuts, some vegetables and meat, which can make it difficult for a person to chew if there is an issue with chewing. What we do know for sure is that eating healthy meals with the necessary vitamins and nutrients can help older adults manage chronic conditions, for instance heart disease, diabetes, and keep bones strong.

Be sure to keep an eye out for signs of malnutrition, which can include dizziness, fatigue, muscle cramps, and bleeding gums. It is important to note that although vitamin and mineral pills exist, they should not replace a healthy diet. If you have any concerns about your diet and oral health, let your dentist know. Make sure to drink water, and eat foods within the major food groups including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and low-fat/fat-free dairy products.

Breaking New Records: Thank You for Another Successful Candy Drive

November 13th, 2018

Our team at Wellesley Dental Group is extremely grateful for another successful community candy drive, which could not have been possible without YOU, our community! The 11th Annual Candy Drive for the Troops was even bigger and better this year. For more than a decade our communities have gathered together for this sweet celebration to collect thousands of pounds of candy, a load of thoughtful messages, and oral hygiene kits, that will be sent to the U.S. troops overseas to express our gratitude for all that they do to keep us safe. We are so thankful for the generosity that our community organizations, businesses, schools and school children have shown through their keen participation in this cause - we couldn’t have done it without you all!

This year we had an enormous amount of participation. Our hour-long community press event took place on November 9th at 10 am, at our office (5 Seaward Road, Wellesley). We had 13,749 students involved and we collected 12,238 pounds of candy from over 43 schools, and numerous other individuals and organizations. We are honored to promote bridging our communities together for a good cause and to celebrate the spirit of giving.

Candy Collection: November 1st-8th

Following Halloween, tons of candy and heartfelt notes began pouring into our office, so much so that we needed a U-Haul to store it all! This awesome initiative began out of a desire to encourage children to eat less candy and instill in them the spirit of sharing. In 2016 we collected 8,600 pounds of candy, and nearly 10,000 pounds of candy in 2017. This year we broke a new record with 12,238 pounds of candy! You may be wondering what will be done with that much candy. We are thankful to work with CarePacks, a non-profit organization that over the years has sent out over 30,000 packages to U.S. troops overseas. On November 17th, 2018 they will be sending out over 500 packages out with the candy, oral hygiene supplies, and caring cards from the community’s donations. We can only imagine how much the troops will smile at the beautiful handwritten cards.

Community and Press Event: November 9th

The grand celebration took place on a beautiful fall day where the community gathered to pay homage to our troops and take a couple of dives into the giant mountain of candy!

We’d like to give special thanks to rising star, Evan Lariviere, who beautifully sang the National Anthem; Rick from CarePacks who spoke about the history of this tradition of giving to the troops; Alice Peisch, Massachusetts State Representative, who spoke about the impact and power of the community’s service to others; The Wellesley High School Keynote Singers, led by Dr. Kevin McDonald, who sang a touching rendition of America the Beautiful; And Wellesley Media for capturing these highlights from our event.

We also had some friendly competition among the schools. The office awarded a grand prize of $1000 to the school PTO that donated the most candy based on a specific algorithm considering the number of students per school and the number of pounds of candy collected per student. This year’s first place winner was  Hardy Elementary School in Wellesley (Both children of Dr. Femina and Dr. Ejaz Ali, Zann Ali and Dr. Zarah Ali, attended Hardy Elementary School)! Second place went to Broadmeadow Elementary in Needham, and third to Fiske Elementary School in Wellesley. Congratulations to all participants, your generosity will touch the lives of many, and for this we are very appreciative.

Brush Your Teeth, Your Heart Will Thank You

Who would have thought that your dentist would be telling you how to help prevent heart disease? It’s commonly known that smoking, a poor diet, lack of exercise, and an uncontrolled weight can impact your heart. However, did you know that brushing your teeth is linked with maintaining a healthy heart? Research published in Scotland revealed that brushing your teeth can lower your risk of experiencing a heart attack or other issues impacting your heart.

Heart disease is a serious problem that unfortunately impacts a lot of people. According to the American Heart Association, about 2,600 people in the United States die each day from a heart attack, heart failure, or stroke. The study looked at approximately 12,000 women and men and observed their oral health habits, daily exercise, and smoking habits. About 60% of the individuals reported seeing a dentist every 6 months, and approximately 70% reported brushing their teeth two times each day. Those who stated brushing their teeth less often were found to have a 70% increased risk of heart disease and had increased amounts of C-reactive protein and fibrinogen, which are found in the blood indicating inflammation. Inflammation is a significant finding related to poor oral hygiene and atherosclerosis (accumulation of fat substances around artery walls). Periodontal disease, which is a chronic condition impacting the gums and tissues around teeth, is a result of poor oral hygiene and adds to the inflammatory response. Some signs of periodontal disease include red and swollen gums, bleeding gums when eating or brushing and flossing, pus or infection around gums, poor taste in your mouth, and loose teeth.

The American Heart Association also conducted a recent study analyzing brushing frequency in 682 participants and the link to heart disease risk. Those who stated brushing their teeth less than two times a day for less than two minutes had a 3 times higher risk of developing heart disease than those brushing for the recommended two times a day for 2 minutes or more. More research is needed to determine whether or not the link is a cause and effect relationship.

Practicing good oral hygiene habits and scheduling regular dental visits can help not only keep your smile healthy but also help keep your heart and overall health in check.

Treats are Tricky: Tips for Halloween

Halloween can be a scary time of year. There's lots of spooky costumes and decorations that can give us all the chills. Not to mention the famous question, "Trick or Treat?" Most people opt for the delicious treats and often have a huge stash of candy that lasts beyond the holiday. But, what you may not have been aware of is the scary effects of all the treats being passed out that can impact your teeth! Normal bacteria in the mouth thrive off of the sugar within Halloween candy and in turn produce acid that cause tooth decay. Not to worry though, it's okay to indulge in a little Halloween candy but make sure you know these tips and tricks to help you and your family keep your pearly whites healthy. With your leftover candy, we'd love for you to come participate in our 11th Annual Candy Drive from November 1st to 8th at the Wellesley Dental Group (5 Seaward Road, Wellesley). 1. Eat Halloween candy with meals

Interestingly, the timing of when you eat candy makes a difference. It's better to eat Halloween candy with meals or shortly after eating a meal because there is more saliva production. Saliva helps wash away food particles and neutralize the acids produced by bacteria. Chewing sugarless gum can also help increase saliva flow and wash out leftover foods in the mouth.

2. Pick and choose your candy

It's better to stay away from hard and sticky candies (ex: caramels, gummy bears) that can linger in your mouth for long periods of time. The longer sugary foods are in your mouth, the greater risk of tooth decay. Chocolate is often a better option as it is washed away quickly in the mouth.

3. Stay hydrated with water

Consuming fluoridated water can help prevent tooth decay and is especially good to rinse with after consuming candy.

Most importantly, make sure to practice good oral hygiene by brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist regularly.

Is Your Mouth Feeling Sizzling Hot?

Being in pain is one of the worst feelings, especially when you don't know the cause. Thanks to new research, knowledge is increasing about chronic oral pain, also called Burning Mouth Syndrome. This condition commonly impacts middle-aged women and can be very debilitating for most people. In past years this condition has been quite ambiguous, but new discoveries are currently being made.

People experiencing Burning Mouth Syndrome often report a sensation of stinging on their tongue, palate, lips and/or gums. This condition can also cause dry mouth, and bitter or metallic taste sensation in the oral cavity. These symptoms can occur gradually overtime or appear suddenly. For many people, it can lead to difficulty eating, sleeping, and cause anxiety or depression.

A dissertation at Sahlgrenska Academy reported that when 56 women with Burning Mouth Syndrome were asked to rate the condition from 0 (not difficult at all) to 100 (unbearable), the average response was 66. It was also found that 45% of the patients experienced altered taste, and 73% had a burning, stinging, numbness, or combination of the three sensations. Burning Mouth Syndrome was strongly correlated with self reports of teeth grinding, multiple medication use, allergies, and skin diseases. Not to mention, mucin proteins detected in the patients were altered and contained less carbohydrate structures that normally impact the immune system. These patients were found to have higher inflammatory levels than the control group of individuals without Burning Mouth Syndrome. With this information, researchers are looking for methods to help with diagnosis and treatment options.

If you're experiencing some of the symptoms mentioned, this can be evaluated during your dental visit. Burning Mouth Syndrome can be secondary to dry mouth from several factors including multiple medications, fungal infections such as oral thrush, nutritional deficiencies (B1, B2, B6, B9, B12, Iron, Zinc), ill-fitting dentures, stomach acid reflux (GERD), diabetes, or consumption acidic beverages.

In the meantime, to help ease the pain, avoid irritants such as tobacco smoking, hot spicy foods, alcoholic beverages or mouth rinses with alcohol, and acidic foods and beverages.

Sweet Treats for Our Troops: Candy Drive 2018

It is the season of pumpkin spice and halloween candy here at the Wellesley Dental Group! As the air turns crisp and the trees turn red and gold, we gear up for one of our favorite annual events - Wellesley Dental Group’s 11th Community Candy Drive! This initiative was coined eleven years ago in an attempt to promote the spirit of sharing in our young ones while at the same time incentivizing them to eat less candy at Halloween time, and instead sharing this seasonal joy with US troops serving abroad. Over more than a decade we have been able to grow this event from just Wellesley to more than 14 towns and 40 schools across Massachusetts, gathering 10,000 pounds of candy for our soldiers last year alone! Every year we get fantastic participation from schools across the region, and for the last few candy drives, WDG has also been awarding a cash prize to the PTO of the school that contributes the highest amount of candy. 

The fun will continue this year! Candy Drive 2018 will run from November 1st to 8th, with candy been collected at the Wellesley Dental Group (5 Seaward Road, Wellesley).  Check out our flyer here. We will be hosting a community and press event on the 9th of November, from 10 am to 11 am, also at our office in Wellesley. We have a lineup of performances by young students, with State Representative Alice Peisch as our special guest. Like every year, we will also have representatives from the National Guard present, along with the Wellesley Fire and Police departments!

What's Up With My Bite?

Malocclusion, or the misalignment of opposing teeth in the upper and lower jaw, is very common in both children and adults. This is often due to the fact that teeth can move slowly overtime just from the normal forces of chewing. This can even occur in individuals who have had braces in the past if they are not wearing a retainer. But not to worry, occlusal/bite problems can be identified early on in children while they still have baby teeth or mixed dentition and restored with orthodontic treatment.

Sometimes malocclusion can be genetic, or due to unhealthy oral health habits during childhood such as thumb sucking  or tongue thrusting. An orthodontic consult is typically recommended for all children around the age of 7 as permanent teeth start coming in so that any potential orthodontic problems can be identified.

Adults may also begin to notice crowding developing visible when smiling. This could occur for various reasons, including teeth shifting out of place after the loss of a tooth. Despite age, orthodontics can help anyone experiencing common tooth alignment issues:

Abnormal eruption

This is caused when a tooth erupts from the gums in the wrong place. The tooth could be blocked from developing in the correct place (tooth impaction), in which a minor oral surgery treatment can be performed to uncover the tooth before beginning orthodontics to bring the tooth into the correct position.

 

 

Crossbite

Crossbite occurs when  one or more of the upper teeth are positioned behind the lower teeth. Orthodontic appliances including a palatal expander can solve this problem in children whose jaws are still developing.

 

 

 

Crowding

This occurs due to a lack of space in the jaw either because the teeth are too big or the jaws are too small. Crowding can be corrected by removing some teeth and/or creating more space within the jaws through orthodontic appliances.

 

 

 

 

Excessive spacing

Spaces may develop when teeth are lost or there is a difference between jaw size and tooth size. These spaces can be closed with braces to ensure teeth don't shift out of place.

 

 

 

Open bite

An open bite can be hereditary, or be the result of prolonged thumb sucking r tongue thrusting. This results in a space between the upper and lower front teeth when biting down.

 

 

 

Overbite

Also known as a deep bite, occurs when the upper front teeth cover the majority of the lower teeth.

 

 

 

 

Overjet

This occurs when the upper front teeth protrude outwards or the lower teeth are inclined toward the tongue. This can be hereditary, or from improper jaw development, missing lower teeth and/or improper positioning of molars. Poor oral habits including thumb sucking or tongue thrusting can contribute to overjet.

 

 

 

Underbite

This is characterized by the lower front teeth covering the upper front teeth. This may be due to overgrowth of the lower jaw and/or less development of the upper jaw.

Share Some Sugar: 11th Annual Community Candy Drive

Can you believe it's October already? That means pumpkin picking, colorful fall leaves, and Halloween are in the near future. This season is one of our favorites because it's almost time for our annual Candy Drive for the U.S. Troops serving overseas. Our caring team at the Wellesley Dental Group is excited to announce the 11th Annual Community Candy Drive! This grand celebration began over a decade ago with the goal of instilling the selfless spirit of giving in children by having them share their extra Halloween candy and bring a piece of home to those serving our country. Not to mention also helping protect their pearly whites by eating less candy!

We are looking forward to gathering our communities together to collect thousands of pounds of candy, a ton of thoughtful messages, and oral hygiene kits, which will be sent to the U.S. troops as a thanks for all that they do to keep us safe. The packages will be sent via CarePacks, a non-profit organization. This year we will be collecting candy, and handwritten cards at the Wellesley Dental Group (5 Seaward Road, Wellesley Hills) from November 1st to November 8th 2018. 

Take a look in the past and check out last year's blog posts with pictures from the event here. Every year we are fortunate enough to have around 40 generous schools and institutions that make up close to 15 different towns participate! All schools, institutions and civic organizations are invited to join. We have loved seeing the drive grow over the years and the generosity spread. Last year we shattered a record of nearly 10,000 pounds of candy.

But the fun doesn't stop there, we're also encouraging some friendly competition again this year with a grand prize of $1000 to the school PTO that collects the most candy. On November 9th from 10am-11am, we will be having a celebratory press/community event where we will announce the prize winner. Principals, faculty, parents, and students with the permission of their teachers are more than welcome to attend.

Protect your Heart by Keeping your Natural Teeth

Who would have guessed that taking care of your teeth could mean simultaneously taking care of your heart? Probably not many people. However, according to research presented at the American Heart Association's Epidemiology and Prevention/Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health Scientific Sessions, there has been a link found between cardiovascular disease and losing two or more teeth during middle age.

More researchers are finding significant evidence that your oral health is associated with the overall health of your body. For instance, oral health problems including gum disease involve the body's inflammatory response, which is often associated with other chronic inflammatory diseases such as diabetes. More recently, studies have found that dental health problems are connected with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

A study conducted by Tulane University School of Public Health, Tropical Medicine, and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health looked at tooth loss in a large group of adults aged 45 to 69 years without cardiovascular disease. Participants were asked to document the number of natural teeth they had and to report any recent tooth loss. The participants were tracked over a 8 year period for the occurrence of tooth loss, and over 12-18 years for the incidence of cardiovascular disease among people without tooth loss, with one tooth lost, and with two or more teeth lost. The results revealed that participants with 25-32 natural teeth at the beginning of the study who lost two or more teeth had a 23% increased risk of having cardiovascular disease when compared to those who did not lose any teeth. Participants who had less than 17 teeth at the beginning of the study had a slightly higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease (25%). Not to mention, all participants who lost two or more teeth throughout the study, regardless of number of teeth at the start of the study, had a 16% increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The increased risk percentages were found despite other cardiovascular risks including diet, physical activity, weight, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

It is important to take care of your oral health by brushing and flossing regularly, as well as scheduling regular dental check-ups. This particularly rings true as we continue to age. Saving your teeth can help save your heart in the long run! So, be sure not to forget the popular saying, "You don't have to brush all of your teeth, only the ones you want to keep!"

Save a Life: Join Us for the Wellesley Dental Group Blood Drive

Our WDG team is excited to announce that we will be co-hosting a community blood donation drive with the American Red Cross and the Wellesley Community Center on Wednesday September 26th, 2018 from 1:00 pm-6:00 pm. The blood drive will be located at the Wellesley Community Center (219 Washington Street, Wellesley, MA 02482).

According to the American Red Cross, each two seconds that passes by someone in the United States is depending on a lifesaving blood donation. However, it has been found that less than 38% of people in the U.S. meets the requirements to donate their blood. At our upcoming blood drive we are aiming to help thousands of people in need. The American Red Cross notes that even 1 donation can save up to 3 lives.

September Is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

What is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month?

Did you know that over 23 million children are obese or overweight in the United States? National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month is a yearly campaign with the goal of letting individuals know the health hazards of obesity, particularly for children. Approximately one third of children in the U.S. are at risk of type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease. But, with the knowledge and proper resources, we can make these statistics and the health of our children better. Several organizations and professionals will be joining together especially this month to raise money, conduct research, and provide treatment to help battle childhood obesity.

Childhood obesity is a serious public health problem that can have a lifelong impact on the overall health. Chronic conditions such as asthma, joint issues, Type 2 diabetes, and sleep apnea may develop at higher rates due to childhood obesity. Also, it has been found that children with obesity often are more likely to experience depression and lower self-esteem. Surprisingly, obesity is also linked with an increased risk of developing periodontal disease due to the body's inflammatory response.

Several factors play a role in childhood obesity, such as genetics, metabolism, your child's home and community environment, as well as eating behavior and level of physical activity. It is important to encourage your child to stay active, get regular sleep, and to have a tooth-friendly healthy diet. When your child's energy is balanced it allows for healthier growth.

Some ways to help prevent obesity include measuring your child's Body Mass Index (BMI). This can be done using the CDC’s Child and Teen BMI Calculator to help identify your child's risk for obesity. Most importantly, make sure your child is provided with nutritious meals that include fruits and vegetables. Now that school is starting up, make sure to pack healthy lunches, which will not only keep your teeth healthy, but also your body! Have your child avoid sugary foods and beverages. Allow a certain amount of time for your child to be involved in physical activity each day. Not to mention, be a role model by following the same guidelines!

Start the School Year Off Smiling!

As the hot summer days and fun of summer are winding down, Labor Day and the beginning of the new school year are approaching! This is the time of year full of back-to-school shopping, final summer getaways, and lots of errands. But what's missing from this list? You're child's dental appointment!

Poor Oral Health is Connected to Lower School Grades

Surprisingly, tooth decay is the most common childhood disease, topping both asthma and allergies. It is important to catch dental problems early because it can lead to more school absences and missed work for parents. A study reported that for every 100 students, approximately 117 hours of school is missed per year as a result of oral health problems. Not to mention, it has been reported that children who experienced tooth pain were four times more likely to have a low grade point average below the average 2.8 GPA when compared to children not experiencing tooth pain. Tooth pain and untreated cavities can be a distraction to learning and may cause your child not to be focused in school.

It is important to prevent dental issues by teaching children good oral hygiene care at home, as well as scheduling regular dental check-ups. This will not only protect your child’s oral health, but also their success in school! Don’t forget your child needs a dental check-up at least two times a year.

Also, if your child is thinking about playing sports in the fall, make sure they have the necessary protection they need to keep their pearly whites safe. Approximately 39% of dental injuries happen during sports. A custom-fitted protective mouth guards is needed for all children playing contact sports, including football, wrestling, and so on. This will protect them from gum damage, tooth loss, and jaw problems.

Sending your child back to school with a happy smile and healthy mouth will be the best kick-off to a great school year!

Am I Using the Right Toothpaste?

Do you ever get overwhelmed by the limitless types of toothpaste on the shelves at a store? From natural fluoride-free toothpastes to those that contain fluoride, it can be hard to know which one you should choose. Fluoride is known to play an important a role in preventing cavities and is naturally found within community water sources. So, that leaves the question: Which type of toothpaste should you be using, fluoride-free or fluoride containing toothpaste?

Some people are choosing to switch to natural fluoride-free toothpaste because they've heard about the potential side effects of Fluoride. Global Healing Center notes that those side effects include arthritis, female puberty acceleration, kidney health, toxic to the thyroid, and adverse cognitive effects. Tom’s of Maine Antiplaque & Whitening Fluoride-Free Toothpaste is a particularly popular brand that people are switching to. However, even Tom’s of Maine brand manager notes that the company’s fluoride-free products don't promise to protect your teeth from tooth decay.

With more research needed to be done, it's still not certain whether or not fluoride-free toothpaste works. Some dentists argue that brushing and flossing the excess plaque off the teeth can help prevent tooth decay. Yet, other dentists say that the components within the toothpaste, such as fluoride are what's mainly preventing tooth decay.

 So, what should you use? If you have a child  that is less than two years old, the American Dental Association recommends that they should not be using a fluoride toothpaste because they are in danger of swallowing too much fluoride. Consuming too much fluoride can cause dental fluorosis, which can cause brown spots on teeth or pitting. Also, avoid fluoride-containing tooth paste if you are allergic to fluoride. Fluoride intake  in the correct amount is important for adults, and infants and children ages 6 months to 16 years, when primary and permanent teeth are developing. Fluoride-containing toothpastes are recommended to help prevent tooth decay.

Your House and Your Saliva: How on Earth Could they be Related?

Normally, we may not be thinking about what saliva is doing for us in our mouths. But, saliva has an important role in helping us breakdown food and protect our teeth due to the proteins and minerals found within it. Turns out, according to new research, the combination of microorganisms in your saliva are mainly determined by your home environment rather than genetics. These organisms within saliva are found to have a great influence on our oral and overall health.

More research is showing that our microbiomes are related to our health. These microbes are perfectly normal to our bodies and help outside pathogens from establishing oral disease. Researchers at  UCL Genetics Institute looked at DNA and saliva extracted from an Ashkenazi Jewish family that lived in several different households across the world so that they could determine how the saliva microbiome varied in terms of environment versus genetics. In each of the DNA and saliva samples, they found that the majority of the salivary microbiome was composed of bacteria from the Streptococcus, Rothia, Neisseria, and Prevotella genera.

When analyzing the results, they also found that between factors including shared household, city, age, and genetics, the factor that determined who shared the most similar saliva microbes was household environment. Therefore, people in the same house share the most similar organisms within their saliva.

So, looks like genetics isn't the biggest factor in determining the makeup of our saliva as once thought according to recent research. This study concluded that a child's home environment plays a significant role in the community of bacteria found within their saliva. Since microbes can be transferred from one person to another, for instance via kissing or sharing utensils, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene, keep regular dental visits, and avoid being in close contact with others when having an active infection.

Love is all around us: Join the Wellesley Community Blood Drive!

We will be hosting a community blood donation drive on February 20th at the Wellesley Community Center. The drive, held in cooperation with the American Red Cross and the Wellesley Community Center, aims to collect more than 50 units of lifesaving blood.

In the United States, it is estimated that someone needs blood every 2 seconds. Despite this high demand, only a fraction of individuals eligible to donate blood actually do each year. Donated blood from universal donors (O-) are in great demand but always in short supply.

By donating blood , you will help thousands of patients in need.

Members of the public are invited to attend. Donors with the following blood types are invited to donate by the Red Cross’ double red cell technology (2RBC):  O- , O+, A- , B-.

Consider the last time you had an impression taken at the dentist's. This device can collect the complete shape and size of the dental arch and then those pictures can be translated into a 3D model.

IOS is especially very helpful when used for dental implants, in the preparation of prosthesis to model and fabricate restorations, in surgical dentistry for guided surgery and in orthodontics to precisely make aligners, or other customized orthodontic devices.

 

In addition to the ease that comes for the dentist with the immediate results, it is also well tolerated by patients. In addition, the 3D models are obtained on the computer and can be stored with an easier access for a longer time than the collection of breakable plaster models.

Bright and Healthy Smiles for the Summer!

It is summertime and you are finally ready to take on a good well-deserved vacation. You have finally freed up some space on your phone and are probably just ready for the limitless photo opportunities. But, is your smile also ready to steal the show?

Wherever you go this summer, remember that your smile is one of the first things that people notice about you. That is why the state of your teeth is a big contributor to your overall confidence.

Any diet that is high in acidic food or drinks leads to a weakening of the enamel which makes it more more likely to get stained and discolored. In addition, acid leads to the wearing away of your tooth enamel. The worn areas of your tooth expose the dentin, which is also yellow in color and adds to the dullness of your smile.

Here are a few things you can do yourself to keep a bright and healthy smile and prevent dental diseases and discoloration.

 

  • One of the easiest things you can do to have good oral health is to brush your teeth regularly, meaning at least twice a day, preferably after each meal; the mechanical motion of brushing your teeth helps you remove plaque.
  • Flossing and brushing go hand-in-hand. This helps you keep your teeth and gums healthy. Using a rubbing motion, go gently between each tooth and make sure that you also go under the gum line. So, floss after every meal, and snack, to prevent build-ups.
  • Rinsing with a good mouthwash also goes hand-in-hand with brushing your teeth and flossing. Rinsing with a mouthwash that could be either diluted hydrogen peroxide or fluoride based gives you an extra support when trying to remove bacteria, or strengthen your teeth and prevent cavities.
  • Healthy eating also plays a major role when it comes to your smile. Avoid consuming foods and beverages that cause stain. Blueberries, cherries, blackberries are popular fruits during the summer, but try rinsing your mouth with water after you snack on them. The same goes for coffee, iced tea, red or white wine, and fruity juices. One way you can consume those drinks is either by using a straw, or by having a glass of water and rinsing your mouth regularly.
  • The best help you can get for a healthy and white smile would be to visit a dental specialist for professional cleaning and whitening treatments.

It's not you, it's your morning breath!

Have you ever wondered why despite keeping good oral hygiene, brushing your teeth and tongue regularly, using a mouthwash and flossing before bed, you still wake up with an unpleasant odor coming from your mouth? Well, it's not you; bad breath in the morning is very common. The condition is also known as halitosis. It happens because during the supposed 8-hours of sleep at night, our mouth goes through a period of reduced salivary flow and no access to food and water. The main function of saliva is to 'rinse' and remove solid food particles which if not removed cause bad breath. And when there is no source of carbohydrates at night, your body ends up breaking down the proteins, the byproducts of which feed bacteria and lead to their growth in the mouth. But as you may have noticed, bad breath disappears after having breakfast and going through our morning dental routine, as most bacteria are removed.

Here are some things that you can do to help yourself and minimize the odor of your ‘morning breath’! Regular dental cleanings and check-ups should go without saying. Professional cleaning helps remove plaque from above and below the gum and places that are hard to reach, or we often neglect. Also, pay attention to the instructions and recommendations your dentist gives you for brushing, flossing, and rinsing. And your overall health matters as well! Try improving your diet, physical activity, and reduce work-load and stress. Remember that everything is interconnected.

There are also conditions which cause oral malodor. Chronic oral malodor is a condition resulting from chronic dry mouth. Other medical conditions such as diabetes, GI disturbance and respiratory infections can also contribute to chronic malodor. It is important to consult your dentist if you experience dry mouth and they will refer you to a primary care physician in the case of medical conditions.

Ice cream, you scream, your teeth shouldn’t scream!

With the hot summer already here, ice cream is one of our favorite cold treat. But while you are enjoying your summer treat, also keep in mind the effect that too much of it can have not only on your summer figure, but also on your teeth.

If you were thinking “well, how bad can ice cream really be?; it is a dairy product; it supplies me with calcium, and that’s mostly what teeth are made of, so how can it harm my teeth?” Yes, ice cream is a dairy product, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it is a good source of calcium. In fact, it has only a minimal amount of calcium when compared to pure milk or yogurt. Most of it is sugar. So, ice cream alone is not sufficient to deliver the enough amount of calcium that your body needs. Our bones and teeth are made of calcium and our nervous system, endocrine system and muscles need it to work properly. Do not neglect other healthier options such as milk, cheese and yogurt.

Additionally, ice cream's high sugar concentration can be bad for your smile. Why? Because bacteria in our mouths use the sugar that we ingest as their food and the product that they release causes teeth to decay. Therefore, it is important to brush your teeth after every meal, even after every snack. And nowadays, you can choose ice cream that is sugar-free. And you can also avoid the sugary toppings. You can do it!

And when it comes to the feeling of sensitive teeth while or after devouring the cold treat, this can be a sign of already existing cavities, or receding gums. This may indicate poor oral hygiene, and it is very important to resolve this issue swiftly by your dentist. Don’t avoid your regular check-ups and have your dental fillings done on time.

Dinosaurs, Tooth Fairies, and Fireworks, Oh My!

Wellesley Dental Group Had a Blast at #WellesleyWonderfulWeekend2016!

The smile ambassadors of Wellesley Dental Group had the pleasure of serving Wellesley Wonderful Weekend last Sunday, May 22nd.

We started off the morning by setting up our tractor float to represent our caring team. Despite the rainy forecast, the weather turned out beautiful (probably because of the Indian anti-rain dance that was performed)!

The float wouldn't be complete without our life-size dinosaur mascot Christopher, our very own tooth fairy, our team members, giant toothbrushes, and fun blue balloons!

All along the parade route, our smile ambassadors passed out toothbrushes and toothpaste to kids and gave them quite a few smiles as well! We were so happy that the kids were all having such a great time.

After the parade, the team made a quick stop at Dr. Ali and Ali's home and headed straight to the Wellesley town picnic in Hunnewell Field.

At the picnic, we set up a tent and a photo booth full of props. We had a great time handing out hair feather extensions and glow sticks to start the fun. To satisfy those sweet cravings, we also made fried Oreos and fried dough (shh...don't tell anyone!) But don't worry, we also gave out toothbrushes and toothpaste to promote proper oral hygiene!

At our booth, over 100 kids and adults that were young at heart took fun pictures with our beautiful tooth fairy and of course, our dinosaur mascot Christopher.

Sleep Apnea and Permanent Tooth Extraction

Sleep apnea is common condition that can lead to trouble sleeping and cause tiredness throughout the day even after a full night's rest. Individuals with sleep apnea experience one or more pauses in breathing during their sleep that can last from seconds to minutes. Aside from excessive daytime sleepiness, signs of sleep apnea also include dry mouth, headache, and snoring, just to name a few.

Research has found that sleep apnea may increase the risk of of high blood pressure, heart problems, stroke, obesity, and diabetes, and the chance of getting into a car accident.

So, you may be wondering how this condition plays a role in dentistry. Some studies suggest that getting teeth extracted for braces can increase one's risk for developing sleep apnea.Orthodontic treatment is the perfect solution to correcting crowded teeth, protruding teeth, gapped teeth, and jaw problems. For well over 50 years and still today, dentists have debated the treatment of extracting permanent teeth for orthodontic treatment. Some dentists extract permanent teeth because it's easier to create more space between teeth, while others use alternative methods, such as palate expansion or headgear to correct one's smile.

Some argue that pre-orthodontic tooth extraction makes the jaw narrower and forces the tongue to lay further back into the mouth and restrict the airway. Also, some believe that extractions can lead to changes in one's facial appearance and temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). TMD is a condition that results in oral issues including chewing problems and jaw pain. However, further research is needed because it is unclear whether these notions are actually the case.

Others counter these arguments and claim that the jaw doesn't necessarily become narrowed and can even become widened depending on various factors. In addition, some argue that extractions can be beneficial for individuals with lip strain or thin gums.

Studies observing patients who've had teeth extracted for orthodontic treatment are inclusive in their findings. These studies often only offer a limited assessment of the patient's airway to see what's actually occurring.  Two studies of patients found no change in the pharyngeal airway as well as a third study.  However, three other studies found a reduction in the airway size of some patients. Researchers believe that the difference in findings could be due to racial differences in the response of the airway to movement of the teeth.

Overall, its unclear whether or not extractions lead to sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a complex condition and further research is needed to explain its association with permanent tooth extractions. If you feel that you are excessively sleepy during the day you may want to contact a sleep specialist so that they can conduct a sleep study. Donate a Prom Dress, Belle of the Ball

Anton’s Cleaners is sponsoring the 12th annual Belle of the Ball  drive to collect, clean, and then distribute prom gowns to high school junior and senior girls.  These girls are nominated by community members, teachers, and others and would not normally be able to afford to attend prom.

Our team at the Wellesley Dental Group loves being Smile Ambassadors for the community and are happy to be a drop off site for this gown drive. If you have any gently worn or new prom gowns and you’d like to help, please bring your gowns to our office, 5 Seaward Rd Wellesley Hills, by March 25th and we will make sure to get them to a local Anton’s for cleaning and distribution.

A Healthy Smile = A Healthy Start to 2016

It's the beginning of 2016 and a great time to make some resolutions for the new year! If staying healthy is one of your resolutions this year, make sure to add "excellent oral health" to the list as well. Dr. Nathan Pfister, a biological dentist in Alabama, claims that dental health and overall health influence each other in many ways.

Dr. Pfister recognizes the fact that dental bacteria and oral inflammation are connected to many medical conditions such as memory disorders, Alzheimer's, heart problems, diabetes, and stroke. Therefore, he connects the diet and oral health habits of his patients by observing plaque samples with a microscope. This way, Dr.Pfister can determine whether dental issues are caused by poor oral hygiene habits, an unbalanced diet, or a medical problem.

There is even further evidence of the strong connection between dentistry and medicine in a study published in the journal of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR)Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. According to this study, there is also a link between periodontal or chronic inflammatory gum disease (which can vary based on smoking habits) and an increased risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Professor Jo L. Freudenheim, PhD, of the University at Buffalo's School of Public Health and Health Professions adds that this common disease is associated with heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and other cancers.

Out of the 73,737 postmenopausal women (none of whom were previously diagnosed with cancer) who participated in the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study led by Professor Freudenheim, 26.1% had periodontal disease. 6.7 years later, the women with this disease had a 14% higher risk of breast cancer.

Possible explanations for the connection between breast cancer and periodontal disease include the effect of inflammation on breast tissues and oral bacteria entering the circulatory system. Professor Freudenheim claims that more studies need to be conducted in other populations in order to determine if there is a causal relationship between oral bacteria and breast cancer.
