Easter Bunny Tips!

As we hop into spring and a new month, we're reminded to keep our health up to par especially as we continue to fight through COVID-19. Easter, like many of the other holidays celebrated over the past year may still look different as we continue to avoid large crowds and limit our gatherings to people in our immediate households to help protect against the spread of coronavirus.

With Easter also comes lots of sweet treats, from marshmallow peeps, to jellybeans, to chocolate bunnies! But, will this impact your smile? Some sweets can be more harmful to your teeth than others, and while indulging in your favorite treats every once in a while can be okay, we're here to tell you about some of the most dangerous candies that can lead to tooth decay.

This Easter, and in general, you'll want to avoid:

  1. Sticky and gooey candies: These candies, such as caramels, gummies, jelly beans, and taffy, tend to stay in the mouth longer and adhere to the surfaces of your teeth, allowing dangerous oral bacteria to feed off the sugars and create acids that break down your tooth enamel.

  1. Hard candies: Rock solid candies like lollipops or jawbreakers tend to stay in your mouth for longer periods of time while you eat them, leaving teeth exposed to sugar during this time. This gives the oral bacteria a greater chance to cause damage. Not to mention, hard candies can cause tooth damage and lead to chipped or broken teeth.

  1. Sour treats: Sour treats can be just as tricky as sweet ones. The sugars and acids put your teeth at risk of weakening the outer layer of your teeth, the dental enamel, and offer an environment for damaging bacteria to thrive in and create tooth decay.

Luckily, there are healthier alternatives:

  • Dark Chocolates: Dark chocolate is a great option to satisfy your sweet tooth. Research has reported dark chocolate to have properties that help fight cavities and dental plaque. In addition, it has been found to contain nutrients beneficial to health, including potassium, phosphorous, zinc, and selenium. It also contains antioxidants, which can help lower risks of cancer and other diseases. Plus, studies have even found it to have blood pressure lowering effects and increase skin hydration.
  • Sugar-Free Treats: Sugar-free candies can be just as tasty and lower your risk of tooth decay.

After satisfying your sweet tooth, be sure to drink water, which helps neutralize harmful acids and rinse away leftover candy particles. You should wait approximately 30 minutes before instructing your child to brush their teeth after having sweets to avoid harming your dental enamel which is in a softened state due to acidity.

Avoid potential dental issues from consuming too much Easter candy! Remember, you can avoid developing cavities with the right plan of action and by following proper oral health guidelines. Proper oral health and seeing your dentist regularly is essential for keeping your pearly whites shining and healthy. If you are having a hard time trying to get your children to brush twice a day for two minutes each time, try implementing fun activities that promote brushing, including videos, books, coloring pages, and even music while brushing.

We hope that you and your loved ones are in good health. Although the world health crisis of COVID-19 has interrupted everyone's daily routine, we hope that all are staying safe and making efforts to flatten the curve.

Even though the Easter bunny is not out and about this year, individuals are making new traditions in celebration of Easter ranging from virtual Easter egg hunts to online church services. Our team at WDG would like to wish those who celebrate a Happy Easter! Easter is a Christian holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Easter comes after a period of fasting, also known as Lent, which lasts for 40 days beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending on Good Friday, the day of Jesus' death.

Here's a fact that you may not have known about Easter: It's the second best-selling candy holiday in the nation, with nearly 2 billion dollars spent on Easter candy! If you have candy stocked up in the house and plan on indulging in some sweets this Easter, keep these quick tips in mind to help keep your pearly-whites healthy:

  1. Help wash away the harmful acids made by oral bacteria by consuming lots of water when eating candy. The basic properties of water also help neutralize the acids.
  2. Avoid snacking on candy throughout the day. It is best to eat candy or sugary sweets during mealtime to lower the frequency of acid exposure to your teeth.
  3. Hold off on brushing and flossing for at least 30 minute to 1 hour after consuming candy to help prevent wearing away the acid-attacked tooth enamel.
  4. Sticky and gummy candies, such as jelly beans and Peeps, are more damaging towards tooth enamel because they tend to be the most acidic and remain on tooth surfaces longer. Also, you want to avoid chewing on a chocolate easter bunny all day as this also exposes your teeth to more breakdown from the acids produced by bacteria.

Some healthier Easter candy alternatives can still be satisfying! For instance, dark chocolate has been found to be tooth-friendly, according to several studies. Dark chocolate is high in antioxidants and polyphenols, which can help limit oral bacteria.

The Easter Bunny is a fan of carrots, and so are our teeth! Real eggs are also a fun part of easter, great for decorating and eating too. They're rich in vitamin D, which can help keep your tooth enamel strong.

Happy Easter Every Bunny!

The Easter bunny is out and about today! Spring is considered to bring new life and a time of rebirth. Easter is a Christian holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Holy Week is also celebrated during the week before Easter. It starts on Palm Sunday and continues on to Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and lastly Easter Sunday. It also marks the end of Lent, which involves 40 days of fasting, prayer, and penance. Typically individuals who participate in Lent focus on giving up a significant indulgence. On Easter morning when Lent ends, people often reward themselves with what they gave up for Lent. Many other Easter traditions have been present for centuries, including the decorating of eggs and easter parades. Eggs are recognized as an ancient symbol of fertility. A prominent symbol of the holiday is the Easter bunny, which is said to have been created by German immigrants who spoke of stories of an egg-laying hare.

For many individuals, Easter involves an exquisite meal shared with family and/or attending church. Others may participate in easter egg hunts full of chocolate and sweet treats, which can be troublesome for teeth. From chocolate bunnies to marshmallow peeps, Easter candy can be tempting. However, too much sweets can lead to tooth decay. In fact, Americans spend approximately $1.9 billion on Easter candy, which is the second biggest candy holiday besides Halloween.

Here are a few simple tips to ensure that your family enjoys the tasty treats while also protecting their teeth:

  • Don’t let sugary treats remain in your mouth for long periods of time. Also, it is best to eat candy during meal time, when there is a high production of saliva present to help attack acids and tooth decay. Try not to drag out the candy consumption over several days.
  • Make sure to brush and floss, as bacteria in the mouth feed off of sugar to create acids that damage the teeth enamel.
  • Limit the amount of Easter candy your child receives, especially if they end up with a lot of easter eggs!
  • Create non-candy basket and replace the sweets with toys, games, books or even dental supplies, like a toothbrush and toothpaste!
  • After candy consumption, drink a glass of water to wash away any left-behind sugars on your teeth.
  • Dark chocolate is one of the healthier options of candy. Dark chocolate is believed to interfere with the bacteria that contributes to gum disease.
  •  Avoid gummy candies such as jellybeans, as well as hard/sticky candies that can become stuck to your teeth.
  • Read the labels, as many candies vary in sugar content.
  • Don’t make a meal out of candy! Choose your treats responsibly and eat them only in moderation!
