Celebrating Men's Health Month

There’s often a lot of celebration in the month of June with many holidays and the fresh start of summer. But, you may not have known that June also represents Men’s Health Month! Promoted by the Congressional Health Education Program, Men’s Health Month is often celebrated across the United States with health screenings, and the promotion of health education through the media and fun activities. The goal of this national campaign is to highlight health issues that many men face and to promote healthy lifestyle choices to help prevent diseases early on.

With greater awareness, we hope that many of the health statistics for men will change. Research has found that compared to women, men are more likely to make risky health choices, including greater consumption of alcohol and smoking tobacco. In addition, men are less likely than women to seek care from health professionals. Major mental health problems that also impact men at high rates include depression, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and schizophrenia.

There are also health conditions that only impact men, such as prostate cancer. Fortunately, some major health problems that men may encounter can be detected and treated early on, for instance colon cancer or heart disease. This is one of the many reasons why regular check-ups with your health professionals are significantly important. Sadly, According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the leading causes of death for men include heart disease and cancer.

Here are some health guidelines to promote in celebration of #MensHealthMonth:

Get your regular physical.

We all know the saying, “prevention is key.” It’s true. By regularly visiting your primary care physician, your provider will be able to establish baselines for many health parameters like blood pressure, weight, and cholesterol. Plus, they will screen for cancers, and catch potentially harmful health issues early on.

 

Don’t skip your dental visit: Gum disease & prostate health linked

Attending your regular scheduled dental visits is important for your dental and general health. Missing appointments can cause untreated problems to get worse, and lead to bigger and sometimes more expensive treatment. Your dentist can also diagnose conditions such as oral cancer and gum disease early when treatment is usually less invasive. Compared to women, men are two times more likely to develop oral cancer. Also, according to the American Academy of Periodontology, periodontal disease is present in approximately 56% of men in the U.S. as compared to about 38% of women. Gum disease unfortunately is not only tied to your oral cavity. It has also been linked to increased risks of heart disease, cancer, and even prostate health in men. According to research at Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine and the Departments of Urology and Pathology at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, prostate inflammation improved in research participants with treatment of gum disease, and vice versa. It was found that prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels were higher in those individuals with both periodontal disease and prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate gland).

Stay hydrated and active

Dry mouth can also be pretty common in men, which can be damaging to oral health. When less saliva is around, your teeth are more at risk of tooth decay and acid breakdown from oral bacteria. Saliva helps neutralize acids and wash away leftover food particles and harmful bacteria to help keep your enamel strong. Be sure that you are drinking plenty of water and staying physically active.

It's not you, it's your morning breath!

Have you ever wondered why despite keeping good oral hygiene, brushing your teeth and tongue regularly, using a mouthwash and flossing before bed, you still wake up with an unpleasant odor coming from your mouth? Well, it's not you; bad breath in the morning is very common. The condition is also known as halitosis. It happens because during the supposed 8-hours of sleep at night, our mouth goes through a period of reduced salivary flow and no access to food and water. The main function of saliva is to 'rinse' and remove solid food particles which if not removed cause bad breath. And when there is no source of carbohydrates at night, your body ends up breaking down the proteins, the byproducts of which feed bacteria and lead to their growth in the mouth. But as you may have noticed, bad breath disappears after having breakfast and going through our morning dental routine, as most bacteria are removed.

Here are some things that you can do to help yourself and minimize the odor of your ‘morning breath’! Regular dental cleanings and check-ups should go without saying. Professional cleaning helps remove plaque from above and below the gum and places that are hard to reach, or we often neglect. Also, pay attention to the instructions and recommendations your dentist gives you for brushing, flossing, and rinsing. And your overall health matters as well! Try improving your diet, physical activity, and reduce work-load and stress. Remember that everything is interconnected.

There are also conditions which cause oral malodor. Chronic oral malodor is a condition resulting from chronic dry mouth. Other medical conditions such as diabetes, GI disturbance and respiratory infections can also contribute to chronic malodor. It is important to consult your dentist if you experience dry mouth and they will refer you to a primary care physician in the case of medical conditions.

Wellesley Farmers Market Open Until End Of October

Summer may be over, but that doesn't mean the Farmers Market is!

Every Thursday from 2-6 pm until late October, the Wellesley Farmers Market will be in the Whole Foods parking lot with bushels of fresh produce and more.

This week's market will feature the first "Farm to School" event for Wellesley. Local farmers will have activities and games to play with children to raise awareness of local farming land and where we get our food.

There will also be chickens to meet, honey tasting, and much more. Why not come out for this fun, educational event and purchase some farm fresh produce to take home?

High Calorie Drinks Reduced In Schools

A while ago, we blogged about a possible sugar tax being implemented on foods with added sugar and sweeteners, such as soft drinks. It was designed to discourage both adults and children from purchasing unhealthy food and drink. Now it seems that the next step has been taken by reducing the availability of these items in schools, helping to further combat obesity.

There has been a huge reduction in drink calorie content available in schools (90%) between 2004-10. These numbers reflect the partnership between the William J. Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association with major drink companies to lessen these drinks' availability.

Vending machines in schools now look much different than in previous years. An assortment of water, milk, juice and sports drinks is what's typically available versus an assortment of sodas before. An assessment of the foods offered in school cafeterias will be underway soon as well.

As the obesity rate climbed, officials began to take notice and search for the cause. Christopher Ashley, supervisor of food and nutrition for Springfield City Schools, said:

“Nine years ago I came into this segment of food service, and you’d see a Honey Buns and two Mountain Dews for breakfast. Now kids are going through the line and getting a better breakfast. That’s just the start.”

The alliance between the William J. Clinton Foundation and beverage companies should continue to make a difference. As stated above, obesity rates have dropped significantly in the past few years. With an emphasis placed on health and wellness not just in schools, but in the media, it is believed that the rate will continue to drop. Once the school menus reflect the nutrition of the drinks, students will be at a major advantage for better overall health.

Fit 50 Year Olds Have Less Chronic Disease

It's common knowledge that eating right and exercising regularly will help maintain a healthy lifestyle. However, a new study shows that 50 year olds that are in shape are less likely to develop sickness as they age. This helps magnify the connection between exercise and overall health.

Dr. Jarett Berry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, says:

"It has been known for decades that if you are more fit, you live longer. But it has not been clear that [if] you have a higher quality of life, you age better.

There was speculation that perhaps exercise and a healthy diet simply prolong the development of disease. However, according to this research, it is not the case. Chronic illness is indeed reduced a great deal in healthy, fit individuals.

The study evaluated over 18,600 men and women who had done a treadmill test to measure their cardio health at age 50. These results were then linked to disease such as diabetes, colon cancer, and heart disease among others.

The comparison showed:

"Among men in the lowest fifth of fitness scores, the rate of chronic disease was 28 percent per year. By contrast, the rate was only 16 percent per year among the top fifth. For women, the numbers were 20 percent per year versus 11 percent, respectively."

As we said above, eating right in combination with exercise is the best method for a healthier you. There's also genetic factors to take into consideration that may sway certain people in one direction, be it healthy or not so healthy. However, it should be said that there are other benefits of being fit and healthy, such as having a healthy weight, strong bones, and good mental health.
