Healthy Start to the School Year

Sometimes we often forget just how important our food choices are for our bodies. Especially when we are craving that most-delicious sweet that we all cannot resist! Things like candy and soda both typically fill our hearts desires, but as we all know they’re not on our good side. But, we truly do need to be more careful about what we eat, not only for your health but also for your pearly whites. Now that summer is soon coming to an end and school is approaching, it’s important to review what should be included on you and your child’s plate. Take a look at these healthy foods that can help satisfy your taste, and keep your mind, body, and teeth in good shape!

Dairy

Dairy products like cheese, milk, and yogurt make great tooth-friendly snacks. Cheese can help lower the risk of tooth decay by raising the pH, making the mouth less acidic. Not to mention, dairy is often full of protein and nutrients that help keep your enamel strong, like calcium. Yogurt contains healthy bacteria, also known as probiotics, which are known to help with digestion and fight off bad bacteria. Dairy is also typically low in sugar, making it a great pick for your lunch.

Nuts

 

Nuts are low in sugar, and are full of protein and minerals that are great for your overall health. Plus, chewing nuts helps trigger saliva production, which can lower your risk for tooth decay. Try tossing them in salads, or grab a bag of them to add to your lunchbox.

 

Hight Fiber Foods/Vegetables

Foods high in fiber such as leafy greens are the way to go when looking for something healthy! It aids digestion, promotes good cholesterol levels, and enhances saliva production necessary for protecting your teeth. Not only are they low in calories, but they're also loaded with vitamins and minerals.

Water

Staying hydrated with water, particularly fluoridated water, is key for keeping your body healthy. Fluoride is an important component as it helps remineralize tooth enamel and makes teeth more resistant to decay.

Apples

An apple a day can actually be good for your health and smile! Apples contain a great amount of fiber and water, and help act similarly to a toothbrush by helping to remove food particles from your teeth.

Carrots

Crunchy carrots also help stimulate saliva production and are a great source of fiber and vitamin A. They make a great snack by themselves or added to salad.

Cranberries

Cranberries have been found to protect your smile by helping keep plaque from sticking to teeth with the help of polyphenols.

Sugarless gum

For all of the gum lovers, sugar-free gum is the best option for your pearly whites. Chewing sugarless gum helps increase saliva production and helps wash away leftover food particles that bacteria feed on.

The Perfect Smile for Valentine's Day

Today on Valentine's Day we are reminded of all of the love that surrounds us. Pink and red flowers, cards, and treats may also make an appearance on this holiday. As we celebrate, make sure you're showing your smile some love too! Here's some tips on how you can keep your pearly whites glistening on your special date or day with loved ones:

Cavities and Kissing:

Did you know cavities can be contagious? Bacteria that cause tooth decay can transmit from one mouth to another through kissing or sharing utensils. The good news is, kissing helps stimulate saliva, which is necessary to wash away leftover foods and fight cavities. But, to prevent swapping germs, it is important to brush your teeth 2x a day for at least 2 minutes and floss for a healthy and cavity-free smile.

Bad Breath Be Gone!

Bad breath can be a burden, but there are a lot of things that can be done to help prevent it.  Bad breath is often a result of bacteria, so good hygiene habits like brushing and flossing are the easiest things to do to keep your breath smelling fresh. A lot of plaque and bacteria are hiding between teeth and on the surface of your tongue so don't forget these areas! There are also a variety of mouth rinses available in the store that are anti-microbial and help get rid of bacteria and bad breath. Not to mention, chewing xylitol gum can help stimulate saliva and keep your breath fresh.

Brighten Smiles with Whitening

Also be sure to rinse with water and try eating the sweets with a meal so that your saliva flow can help wash away the sugars that cause tooth decay.

How Does Your Cold/Flu Affect Your Mouth?

Catching a cold or the flu can be one of the worst things that come with the cold weather during winter. The (CDC) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that adults typically get a cold 2-3 times a year! A lot of challenges come with being sick, including trouble sleeping, eating, and just going about your normal daily activities. With a sore throat, stuffy or runny nose, and a box of tissues by your side, you may be looking to cough medicine and nasal decongestants to hide the symptoms. But, did you ever wonder how your cold or the medicines to treat them impact your teeth and mouth?  Here's some things to keep in mind in order to keep your body and mouth healthy while combatting a cold:

Stuffy Nose & Dry Mouth

It's a real struggle when you cannot breathe through your nose, especially when you're trying to get a good night's rest. As a result, you have to breathe through your mouth, which can cause you to experience dry mouth. Dry mouth occurs when there is less saliva flow, which can also occur from taking nasal decongestants like sudafed to remedy your stuffy nose. Unfortunately, dry mouth not only makes it hard to swallow, it can also impact your mouth by promoting bacterial growth. So, when taking nasal decongestants to help your cold, stay hydrated with water and chewing xylitol-containing gum can help stimulate saliva flow. You can also try using a humidifier in the room you sleep in.

Sinus & Tooth Pain 

Another obstacle that you may face as a result of being sick is tenderness and pain around your sinuses as a result of sinusitis. This can cause you to feel like you have a toothache in your upper jaw since they are near your sinuses. Some signs of sinusitis include a yellow colored mucous drainage, and pressure near your mid-face. Fortunately, this experience should improve once your cold clears up.

Cough Drops/Syrup & Throat Lozenges

Here's the scoop on cough syrup, cough drops and sore throat lozenges:  most of the time these products contain sugar for flavor and can be damaging to your teeth as they are held in your mouth for long periods of time. Not to mention, cough syrups are sticky and can remain on teeth and cause harm to your enamel. Try to look for pills, sugar-free cough drops, and sore throat lozenges as these are best for your oral health! Be sure to also keep your regular oral care routine brushing, flossing, and rinsing.

Orange Juice

Orange juice is loaded with vitamin C to help your immune system fight your cold. Due to the acidity which can weaken your tooth enamel, try drinking orange juice in one sitting during a meal, and drink water afterwards to help protect your tooth from the acid.

As you fight a cold/flu keep your dental health in mind and replace your toothbrush once you feel better so you can start fresh!

New Year, Healthier Teeth!

Happy New Year's Eve! As we approach 2019 this is a perfect time to think about what we want for the New Year. Many people wish for improved health without realizing that overall health involves dental health. Resolutions to keep your smile beaming will help your body in the long run! Here's some resolutions that can make a huge difference in improving your health:

Applying Good Toothbrushing and Flossing Habits

In order to successfully remove bacterial plaque and prevent developing cavities, it is important to brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day. Choosing a soft-bristled manual or electric toothbrush along with toothpaste that has fluoride in it is essential for effective toothbrushing. Fluoride within toothpaste helps remineralize your tooth enamel and prevent bacteria from forming acids that can erode your tooth enamel. It is also important to make sure that you are brushing gently at a 45- degree angle toward the gumline, as food particles and bacteria love to hide in this area. A toothbrush should be replaced approximately every 3-4 months or as soon as you notice the bristles are frayed. Although it can be hard to remember to floss, your teeth will thank you in the long run because regular toothbrushing cannot reach in the same areas (below the gumline and in-between teeth). This way you can prevent gingivitis, periodontal disease, tooth decay, and bad breath. You can add mouthwash containing fluoride to your oral hygiene regimen also to improve your oral health.

Adopt a Healthy Diet

What you eat plays an important role in your dental and overall health. It is best to stay away from frequently consuming foods and drinks that have a lot of sugars and acids which contribute to tooth decay. Nutritious foods including fruits, vegetables, and nuts often help your body fight bacteria and inflammation, as well as keep your teeth in great condition. Replace unhealthy snacks with foods such as apples, carrots, celery, and cheese which naturally help remove plaque from teeth. It is also recommended to chew gum that contains Xylitol after eating which can help neutralize acids and prevent cavities from developing.

Schedule Regular Dental Checkups in the New Year

Scheduling regular dental visits will help improve your smile and keep a close check on any dental problems that may be around. The New Year is a great time to begin or complete any dental work including crowns, implants, or fillings that need to be done, or even correction of an abnormal bite with braces or Invisalign to enhance your smile. Avoid Tobacco and Alcohol Use

Research states that smokers are approximately 2X's more likely to have tooth loss than people who don't smoke. In addition, alcohol consumption can lead to increased gum recession and tooth staining.

Treats are Tricky: Tips for Halloween

Halloween can be a scary time of year. There's lots of spooky costumes and decorations that can give us all the chills. Not to mention the famous question, "Trick or Treat?" Most people opt for the delicious treats and often have a huge stash of candy that lasts beyond the holiday. But, what you may not have been aware of is the scary effects of all the treats being passed out that can impact your teeth! Normal bacteria in the mouth thrive off of the sugar within Halloween candy and in turn produce acid that cause tooth decay. Not to worry though, it's okay to indulge in a little Halloween candy but make sure you know these tips and tricks to help you and your family keep your pearly whites healthy. With your leftover candy, we'd love for you to come participate in our 11th Annual Candy Drive from November 1st to 8th at the Wellesley Dental Group (5 Seaward Road, Wellesley). We are gathering our communities together to collect thousands of pounds of candy, a ton of thoughtful messages, and oral hygiene kits, which will be sent to the U.S. troops as a thanks for all that they do to keep us safe. 1. Eat Halloween candy with meals

Interestingly, the timing of when you eat candy makes a difference. It's better to eat Halloween candy with meals or shortly after eating a meal because there is more saliva production. Saliva helps wash away food particles and neutralize the acids produced by bacteria. Chewing sugarless gum can also help increase saliva flow and wash out leftover foods in the mouth.

2. Pick and choose your candy

It's better to stay away from hard and sticky candies (ex: caramels, gummy bears) that can linger in your mouth for long periods of time. The longer sugary foods are in your mouth, the greater risk of tooth decay. Chocolate is often a better option as it is washed away quickly in the mouth.

3. Stay hydrated with water

Consuming fluoridated water can help prevent tooth decay and is especially good to rinse with after consuming candy.

Most importantly, make sure to practice good oral hygiene by brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist regularly.

Goodbye 2016, Hello 2017!

Some common new year's resolutions are exercising more or trying a new activity, but did you know that improving your oral health should also be one of your priorities for 2017? Healthy teeth is the key to your overall well-being! A few small improvements could lead to great rewards.

The first step to a healthier mouth is to have better brushing and flossing habits.

  • If you've had your toothbrush for more than three or four months, replace it! Worn bristles don't clean your teeth as well as a brand new toothbrush!
  • Brush at least two times a day with a fluoride toothpaste for two minutes every day. This is the best way to avoid bad breath, cavities, and infection!
  • Don't forget to floss at least once a day to get rid of the bacteria and food particles stuck between your teeth.
  • Use a fluoride mouthwash.

Another important part of maintaining your oral health is your diet.

  • Avoid acidic and sugary drinks to prevent tooth decay!
  • Try to limit snacking in between meals
  • Chew sugar-free gum or brush after meals
  • Drink water with fluoride

And last but not least, make sure to schedule regular appointments with your dentist!

  • You could prevent oral diseases or fix them at an early stage
  • You may need braces to fix abnormal bites, straighten your teeth, or enhance your smile
  • You could get whitening treatment to have a whiter smile

Cure Bad Breath To Be Happy!

According to a study published in the International Journal of Dental Hygiene, those who suffered from halitosis, or bad breath, were twice as unhappy as those who didn't and experienced 500% more negative encounters than those without the same problem.

Bad breath is a common problem usually caused by food particles getting stuck between teeth or bacteria that coat your tongue. This issue not only impacts your oral health, but also your psychology, including self-esteem and confidence. It makes sense that you may be a little shy to speak confidently when your breath doesn't smell the greatest! This is just another piece of evidence that there is a strong link between oral health, mental health, and lifestyle.

To Pull Or Not To Pull: Wisdom Teeth Extractions

To pull or not to pull, that is the question! Wisdom teeth, molars found in the back of your mouth, usually appear in your late teens or early twenties, may need to be removed if they are impacted, or fail to erupt due to a lack of room or a poor entry angle.

If an impacted wisdom tooth is not removed, you may experience painful crowding and infections. For instance, if a gum flap is covering part of a wisdom tooth that can't come out all the way, food particles and bacteria could become trapped and lead to pericoronitis, a low-grade infection, and swelling.

Additionally, in more serious cases, fluid-filled growths called cysts can form and permanently damage your bone, teeth, and nerves.

To determine whether your wisdom teeth need to be removed, make sure to make an appointment early on in your late teens or early twenties so that there is less of a chance that the roots of your teeth have not fully formed and the bone surrounding your teeth is less dense. Additionally, your recovery time will be much shorter. At your appointment, your dentist will take a panoramic X-ray to take a look at your situation.

The Key to a Healthy Smile with Braces

Even though braces will allow you to have a beautiful smile, they can also trap food particles and cause plaque to build up in your mouth. However, braces don't have to be a burden if you take care of your teeth properly during treatment!

Here are some good oral hygiene tips to follow if you have braces:

1. Use toothpaste with fluoride

By brushing your teeth with a high-fluoride toothpaste, you can stop white spots and decay from forming on your teeth. Try to brush for a full two minutes after every meal or at least twice a day. Make sure that your toothbrush reaches all the spots under wires and between brackets. Replace your toothbrush around every three months.

2. Rinse with mouthwash

Rinsing with a mouthwash twice a day for a minute helps wash away plaque and food particles stuck between your brackets.

3. Floss!

It's even easier for food to get stuck in between your teeth if you have braces. Threader floss is recommended, because it has a stiffer side that allows you to floss between your brackets, but regular floss is better than no floss at all!

Take good care of your teeth when you have braces, otherwise you could develop gum disease, gingivitis, or other oral health problems.

Stock Up on Sugar-free Gum!

Sugar-free gum isn't just fun to chew - it can do the important job of preventing tooth decay as well!

The British Dental Health Foundation claims that chewing sugar-free gum after eating and drinking along with a proper brushing routing can both neutralize plaque acids and decrease the risk for cavities. The American Dental Association (ADA) suggests chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes following meals to reduce plaque and gingivitis as well.

What are some reasons why sugar-free gum is so beneficial for your oral health? It promotes saliva production, (which breaks down food particles and washes away acids) and the remineralization of tooth enamel.

So stock up on sugarless gum next time you go out!

Listen up, Kids: Dental Care for Children

kidBelieve it or not, a third of children today have tooth decay before even starting school. According to statistics published by the Health & Social Care Information Centre, tooth decay is one of the main causes of hospital visits for children in elementary school. Surprisingly, 25,812 children ranging from ages 5 to 9 went to the hospital for tooth extractions in the last year alone.

Here are some tips below on how to protect your child’s teeth to make sure that your child doesn’t become part of these statistics!

  1. Drink less fruit juice!

Just because fruit juice is nutritious and often rich in vitamin C does not mean that it’s also beneficial for your teeth! Many juices have around the same amount of sugar as that in sodas, or even more. For instance, NPR states that apple juice contains 65.8 grams of sugar per liter, while cola contains 62.5 grams of sugar per liter. This copious amount of sugar leads to tooth decay. Furthermore, the acid from the juice destroys the enamel of teeth, which can cause teeth to deteriorate. Even the British Dental Association claims that 50% of children ranging from four to 18 years old show these signs.

Because of these harmful effects of fruit juice, dentists recommend water and milk as healthy beverage alternatives for children. If your child is still craving fruit juice, try to dilute it as much as possible and make sure that your child has a meal with it. Also, try your best to avoid letting your child have too much contact time with the cup and his or her teeth and instead opt for using a straw.

 

  1. Avoid dried fruit !

Dried fruit isn’t a good replacement for candy it has a great deal of sugar, and even worse, its sticky texture clings onto your child’s teeth. Due to these unhealthy properties, dried fruit can ruin enamel and rot your little one’s molars. Although chocolate isn’t a great option, dark chocolate is known to  be rich in antioxidants that help prevent the spread of tooth-decay causing bacteria.

Whole fruit can be a better option than dried fruit and fruit juice because it contains water and fibers that help wash away sugar from teeth. However, try not to feed your child more than one or two low-sugar fruit pieces (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, kiwis, peaches, and pears) instead of high-sugar fruit pieces (grapes or pineapple) per day. Incorporate fruit into meals rather than simply having them as snacksBreadsticks, toast, cheese, nuts, or seeds are some healthier snack alternatives.

 

  1. Baby teeth matter!

It's important not to presume that just because baby teeth are not permanent, that they should not be taken care of! Your child’s permanent teeth are at a higher risk of decay and other dental problems when primary teeth decay. Baby tooth decay could lead children to experience dental anxiety, which could make them less likely to visit the dentist later on.

 

  1. Help your child brush his/her teeth!

Depending on how mature your child is, you should help brush your child’s teeth until at least age seven to ensure that they are using proper brushing techniques. 

 

  1. Proper brushing techniques!
  • Don’t let your child brush his/her teeth right after eating, particularly after eating or drinking something acidic. Doing so will brush the enamel away! Your child should either brush before eating breakfast or wait an hour after the meal. Chewing sugar-free gum can also be an effective way to clean teeth, because it produces saliva, which defends against decay, and brings mouths back to a neutral pH level.
  • It doesn’t matter if your child uses a manual or electric toothbrush. What’s important is that the brushing lasts for at least two minutes! Electric toothbrushes often have built-in timers, so this feature can be effective.
  • Don’t let your child rinse the toothpaste away right after brushing! The fluoride in the toothpaste can keep protecting his or her teeth for 30 minutes. Children under three should use toothpaste with 1,000 fluoride parts per million, while children over three should use adult toothpaste that contains 1,450 fluoride parts per million.

For many parents, the first time they took their children to the dentist was when their children were at least one year old. However, parents should set their first appointment for when their children’s teeth begin to come out, which is around five to six months old. Further oral health tips for children can be found here.

Don't Take your Stress Out on Teeth!

Are you wrecking your teeth without even knowing it? Many individuals have a tendency to chew on a pencil or other objects when faced with a lot of work. It can also be tempting to use your teeth to rip open a package, open a plastic bag of food, or turn a stiff soda cap. It may seem like a harmless habit, however, using your teeth for anything other than chewing food can lead to chips, cracks, or even tooth loss.

Stress is a natural experience, but too much stress can have a negative impact on your mouth, teeth, and gums. Oral symptoms of stress typically include orofacial pain, poor eating habits, bruxism, temporomandibular disorders (TMD), mouth sores, and periodontal disease. To prevent stress from affecting your oral health, it is important to practice good oral health habits.

It is also important to remember that teeth are not tools! Although stress-relieving and often addicting, using your teeth as tools is damaging to your enamel. Teeth are necessary for speech, grinding food, and maintaining a healthy smile. Yet, with their many functions, teeth should never be used for ripping open or biting down on materials.

Here are some common negative dental health habits to avoid so that your smile can remain healthy:

Placing Your Pencil Between Your Teeth

Have a stack of work to complete? Need to concentrate? Some individuals tend to store objects, including  pens, pencils, or erasers between their teeth when trying to complete a challenging task. Biting on a non-food object can cause teeth to shift or crack due to the high amount of pressure placed on teeth. It can even damage existing dental work done in the mouth. Biting down on these objects can create grooves in the teeth and lead to other oral problems down the road!

Using Teeth as Scissors

Sometimes it can be time-consuming to look for a pair of scissors. However, is it worth compromising your dental health? Ripping off paper sales tags, tape, or plastic is a bad idea! Using your teeth to open materials can damage the teeth and throw your jaw joint out of place, leading to a TMD/TMJ disorder. Also, the sharp edges of many materials can cut into your gums, which can increase your risk of developing infections and other problems with your gums.

Using Teeth as an Extra Hand

Even simple tasks such as kitting and sewing can be harmful if you involve your teeth in the process.  Holding pins or tearing thread with your teeth can create grooves or holes in teeth.

Using Teeth to Crack Nuts or Seafood  

Cracking open seafood served in a shell or nuts will easily damage your teeth. Teeth were not designed for this function and thus cannot handle the applied pressure. Failing to use a nutcracker or other appliance can lead to a cracked tooth, which may require a root canal procedure and crown.

Using Teeth as Bottle Openers

Don't abuse your teeth! In addition to cracking your teeth, using them as a bottle opener can lead to serious damage and additional dental procedures.

Don’t let these bad oral habits become second nature! Whether it’s chewing on a bottle, ice, or a pencil,  resist the urge to damage your teeth with these objects. Using your teeth as instruments can wear down your teeth unevenly!

Is Chewing Gum to Blame for Headaches in Kids?

gum chewing headachesGum chewing is a common habit for both adults and adolescents.  Although chewing gum can provide dental benefits like whitening and aid in the prevention of tooth decay, research has shown that chewing gum may not be as beneficial as once thought.  Many would not think to relate gum chewing with prolonged headaches.  However, recent research has begun to elucidate the correlation between the two.

Dr. Nathan Watemberg of Tel Aviv University and Meir Medical Center looked at the relationship between frequent gum chewing and headaches specifically in adolescents.  He focused on a group of patients between the ages of 6 and 19 who both reported chronic migraines or headaches and chewed gum on a daily basis.  Once the group of adolescents quit gum chewing entirely, almost 90% of the group reported decreased frequency and intensity in headaches and more than half of the group reported that their headaches completely disappeared.

There are a few theories that seek to to explain why gum chewing might cause headaches.  For one, the physical act of prolonged chewing causes stress to an area of the head where the jaw is connected to the skull.  Alternatively, some researchers believe that the artificial sweetener used in some types of gum is the culprit.

Regardless of the reason, it seems that forgoing gum chewing may alleviate the debilitating effects of daily headaches in adolescents.

Hi-Chew - Can it Chew Away Our Enamel?

hi-chew candyYou have probably heard of Hi-Chew candy, especially if you are a parent and live in Wellesley or MetroWest area. This caramel candy became a favorite snack for a lot of teenagers, you can find it in any 7-Eleven store. As a parent, that makes me concerned with the impact this fad can have on our kids' health. So I did a little research.

Turns out, Hi-Chew company has been on the market in Japan for more than 80 years, and now is extremely popular in the local Asian markets (China, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand). There are over 100 flavors of Hi-Chew candy created, it clams to be the most delicious chewing gym that/candy that dissolves in your mouth, like Starburst. According to Swellesley Report, the candy, described by some as a tastier and less plasticky version of Starbursts, is chewy — as the name implies — and features a colorful and  flavorful goo in the middle of a firmer white exterior. You didn’t want to hear this, but it has been described as “crack for kids,” according to one woman who passed along this comment from a 7th grader.
The ingredients, however, don't look too good to me:

A serving of the candy has both 31 grams of sugar and acids (Citric and DL-Malic acids), which is an alarming fact. According to the article in the magazine of Academy of General Dentistry, What many people don’t know is that Citric acid —which is used as flavor enhancer and preservative — can severely damage teeth and cause significant erosion. The amount of sugar the candy contains can be detrimental to the teeth. They become even more vulnerable due to the sticky consistency of the candy - it stays on the surface of the teeth!

Although it's hard to persuade your teens to be careful with the candy that is manufactured to be sweet, juicy and somewhat addicting, you, as a parent, have to make sure they understand that indulging in this fad might cause a few new cavities.

Holiday Cheer!

Our team wants to wish you happy holidays and share a few tips on how to protect your smile this time of the year!

Holiday season is upon us and we all want to look and feel our best for the celebration time!

Busy schedules and the stress of visiting stores after stores, trying to get everything on your wish list, will make it very easy to break your daily cleaning routine. Holiday banquets with plentiful amounts of delicious food and desserts, as well as alcoholic beverages that are usually highly acidic and can harm your enamel, can definitely make it more challenging to have a bright pearly smile for that family picture.

Here are a few things you can add to your holiday routine:

    1. Keep a pack of chewing gum or even a travel package of floss in your pocket/bag. It's a quick fix and will help you keep your breath fresh and get rid of some harmful bacteria.
    2. Indulge in moderation! If you get to enjoy a glass or two of wine or a different alcoholic beverage, be mindful of the acidity they can raise in your mouth. When choosing between drinks, go for the less sweet ones. Also, drink a glass of water in between to wash away some of the acidity.
    3. Always bring your toothbrush when you are travelling away from home.
    4. Get your dental work done before the holidays. It can be tempting to put off a root canal or filling until after the holiday fun is over, but the truth is that taking care of your dental needs before family, friends and festivities begin is the best way to make sure you don’t have an unpleasant dental surprise in the middle of your celebrations.
    5. Eat your carbs in one sitting, rather than keep snacking throughout the day. Every time a piece of candy is eaten it takes an hour for the acid inside the mouth to dissolve!

Spirit of Patriotism at Our Candy Drive!

We did it again! This year’s Candy Drive was a great success, and we are proud to say we have collected even more candy than last year: over 7340 pounds so far—and the candy is still pouring in!  This weighs more than a Humvee! The candy will be sent as care packages with carepacks.org to the troops overseas as a sweet reminder of home.

Here are some highlights from the Candy Drive!

We were joined by so many wonderful people and organizations! We had the National Guards come out, along with a Humvee! We were also joined by some Veterans, who served as an amazing reminder for everything our troops do for us. We also had Chief Cunningham and the Wellesley Police Department, along with Chief DeLorie and the Wellesley Fire Department—everyone who keeps us safe! All the local public schools were represented, and a lot of children and school principals came personally as well. Even local businesses and organizations came to drop off candy and show their support!

The spirit of patriotism was running high, just in time for Veteran’s Day! Two of our children sang the National Anthem, and we had a moment of silence for those overseas. Everyone was waving around handheld flags with big smiles on their faces.

The Wellesley Public Schools had a little contest to see which school could collect the most candy. The winner was Upham, whose PTO was awarded with a $500 check, and second and third place went to Hardy and Sprague, respectively.

It is heart warming to see the whole town come together in the spirit of giving. The Wellesley Fire Department and Wellesley Police Department, along with the National guards supporting the town-wide initiative to support the troops. All Wellesley Public Schools participated with many private and neighboring town schools.

At the letter writing table, kids and adults both had an opportunity to write a personal note or card to send along with the candy to our troops. We imagine that these kind words of love and support will be even sweeter than the candy!

It has been so touching to see the message of health and giving being spread across our community. Together We Can Do So Much!

Together we can do so much! It was wonderful to see the Wellesley and Metrowest community united through the spirit of philanthropy. The candy drive is not only a wonderful way to promote oral health but it is also a way to give back. Our mission of being smile ambassadors is two-fold: promoting healthier teeth for our children and  also bringing smiles to the troops overseas. Seeing all of the kids give up their extra candy and writing beautiful heart-warming letters to send to the troops is incredibly touching, and shows just how much our community cherishes our troops.

Special thanks to all the Wellesley Public School Principals, Chief Rick DeLorie of the Wellesley Fire Department, Chief Terrence Cunningham of the Wellesley Police Department, and Joanna Bandte for her tireless efforts in making this a huge success!

Our Candy Drive Brigade!

It’s the day before we wrap up this year’s Candy Drive and the action never stops. Our Candy Brigade at work! We've been filling boxes upon boxes of candy to tomorrow's festivities. Our friend, Joanna Bandte, and our dental assistant, Helio,  has been so busy driving around town in a Uhaul to collect notes and candy from the community. So far we have collected from Sprague, Bates, Fiske, Schofield, Upham, Hardy, Magic Beans, Cabot, Downey, and the list is still growing! We can't wait to see how much we have in store this year.  Our Uhaul is filling up nicely and our office is already full of candy. We will have to bring our drive outside.

Mike , from Magic Beans came over, dropping off even more candy.  Magic Beans has been so incredibly generous again this year with their donation – a true symbol of the generosity of the Boston community.

We can hardly wait to see all the excited faces tomorrow as students, principals, parents, volunteers, national guard, veterans, and the media from all over the Metrowest area join together in the spirit of giving. We have children that will be singing the national anthem. It is amazing for us to see the community come together centering around the drive. We can’t imagine how happy the soldiers will be to receive all this candy and those beautiful letters.  It warms our hearts amidst this rainy day to know how much good we all are doing through this remarkable event. Keep up the wonderful work!

Generous contributors have been coming in and out of the office this week. If you haven’t already, pay us a visit! It’s not too late for you to join in on the fun and donate your candy and hand-written notes to the troops.  Stop by tomorrow morning and you’ll be able to see our ever-growing gargantuan and multi-colored candy display.

Donations to the Candy Drive will be happily accepted up until Friday, November 8 at Wellesley Dental Group on 5 Seaward Rd in Wellesley. We request that  donations be dropped off between 8 am to 11 am. All the candy and letters will be shipped overseas to the soldiers via CarePacks, a non-profit organization.

We are happy to report that schools from Newton, Needham, Dover, Westwood, and beyond will be participating this year. This upcoming week we will be working closely with these schools, as well as daycares and community organizations, like the Wellesley Mother’s Forum. Also, we are happy to report that Magic Beans has joined hands and will be bringing all of their collected candy to us. Children and adults are encouraged not only to donate extra candy but to bring handwritten letters and cards for the troops overseas. Help us beat last year’s record of 5260 pounds and bring smiles to countless soldiers!

 

If your school or organization would like to participate, please let us know. Donations for the Candy Drive will be happily accepted from now until Friday, November 8th at the Wellesley Dental Group on 5 Seaward Rd in Wellesley. We request that all donations be dropped off during business hours: Monday through Thursday from 8am to 5pm. Parents may think that the days following Halloween is when they have to be more lenient about the amount of candy their children eat, but pediatric dentists urge parents to pay closer attention to their teeth and the candy they are consuming.

 

Children are receiving a variety of different candies, and dentists recommend avoiding sticky or liquid candies, which tend to stick onto children’s teeth. Individuals may ask whether there is a better alternative than these candies, but it is hard to give a solid answer. Candies are high in sugar content, providing the bacteria in the oral cavity with plenty of food. This ultimately increases the production of acid via bacteria, which leads to a higher risk of tooth decay and cavities. When looking through children’s basket of candy, here are a few candies that tend to be less harmful for teeth:

 

1. Sugar-free candy and gum with xylitol: these candies do not continue sugar, which is the primary source of food for bacteria; gum and candy has the potential to prevent tooth decay by increasing saliva and rinsing sugars and acids in the oral cavity

 

2. Even though powdery candy is packed with sugar, powder tends to dissolve quickly and is less likely to stick to teeth

 

3. Chocolate: chocolate also dissolves relatively quickly in the mouth; however, try to stay away from chocolate containing caramel and nuts, which are substances that can easily stick to teeth

 

Halloween can be a treacherous time for teeth, but there are also many ways to help children prevent tooth decay. Be sure to monitor the amount of candy that a child is consuming. After eating the candy, it is important to enforce proper brushing. Make sure that sticky candies have been brushed off and removed for tooth surfaces. A toothpaste containing fluoride can also keep teeth strong, protecting them from cavities. 30 seconds of brushing should be allotted to each quadrant, with a total of 2 minutes of brushing. Going in the small crevices between teeth is just as important, ensuring that there is no sugary residue for bacteria to consume and produce acid.

Vacation week!

It’s school vacation week! At WDG, we had an amazing President’s Day where we saw so many of our wonderful patients. We’re looking forward to seeing so many more this week. It really makes us happy when vacations come because it means that our busiest patients will have enough time to put their health first and come visit us for their much-needed care. This is especially true for our youngest patients who attend school.

 

Have you visited your dentist recently? Now might be a great time. It’s so important to prioritize your oral health, especially for children. Starting good oral health habits early on lead to a life of better oral and general health.

Besides visiting your dentist, here are some fun things you can do this vacation week!

1. Visit the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and check out their special learning opportunities with your child. Workshops are from 10 am – 4 pm.

2. It’s February Vacation week at the zoo! Visit the Franklin Park Zoo and experience the wonders of the animal kingdom and the jungle with your child. This week, the zoo is offering extra learning opportunities for young enthusiasts.

3. Even though it’s still chilly, if your child is outdoorsy, here are some great suggestions for family hikes from Mommy Poppins, like Walden Pond. It may be a good idea to call beforehand to make sure there are no weather-related issues.

4. Check out your local library for fun events, concerts, and movies! The Wellesley Free Library even has a Young Scientist event where they are bringing in owls!

5. Spend family time together. No matter what you do, having fun as a family is special! Get off the computer and connect with one another the old fashioned way. Cook, take walks, listen to music. It doesn't matter as long as you have each other.

Keep your kids cavity free!

Sure, they may have baby teeth that will fall out soon enough; however, prioritizing good oral health practices in your children early on is important. Building good habits in your kids will positively influence their overall health for years to come. So what can you do now to help your child’s future?

  • Make sure they brush twice a day every day and start flossing early on so they get into the habit now. Plaque, a bacterial film, builds up and in between the teeth, so consistent removal is important. If plaque is left to sit, it can cause decay and gum problems.
  • Make an appointment for your child’s first visit if you haven’t yet. It’s a good idea to make an appointment as soon as the child’s first tooth comes in or no later than their first birthday.
  • Set a good example by prioritizing your own oral health and remember, the way in which you talk about the dentist will affect your child’s expectations of their own dental visits. By staying positive and sharing good experiences with your child, you will keep your child at ease. Going to a dentist is a positive thing and it’s great when children look forward to it. Ask you dental office if you can bring your child beforehand for a show and tell! Help your dentist build a lasting relationship with your child.
  • Watch what your child eats. Sugars don’t come solely from candy and juices. In fact, a recent study discovered that the food that causes the most cavities isn't sweet at all, crackers. Most crackers are highly processed foods and are a feasting ground for bacteria, which deteriorates tooth enamel. A better option for your children are whole grains, unprocessed foods and be sure to stay away from sticky foods, which can get caught between teeth and within the groves of the tooth surface.

 

Oral hygiene is an integral part of the day, like eating breakfast. Help your child set him/herself apart from the alarming number of children who have tooth decay. In fact, according to the CDC, 25% of children between the ages of 2-5 have tooth decay. With better oral health practices from the start, this can change.

Yankee Dental Congress 2013

This year, we made our yearly trek to Boston to attend the annual Yankee Dental Congress. We had so much fun learning about new equipment, procedures...and most of all, the freebies! Some of us scored a bag full of toothpaste, a power toothbrush, even MP3 stereos. What was most fun of all, however, was spending time together outside the office, sharing our passion for dentistry in a totally different way. When we weren't geeking out over all the newest and amazing dental technology, we had fun goofing around with the life-size Oral-B toothbrush. We even got Milo some dental dog biscuits because even dogs need to brush (photos below).

It was a wonderful weekend for all of us and it's great to be back in the office to share with our patients our love of oral health. Below are some more great photos from this weekend.
