Happy National Wine Day! Did you know that moderate wine consumption (no more than one drink per day for women and two per day for men according to the US Department of Agriculture's "Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010") can lead to many health benefits?

1. Reduced Risk for Certain Cancers and Diseases

Moderate red wine consumption has the potential to prevent both breast and colon cancer. According to an article in the Journal of Women's Health, red grape skin and seed chemicals decrease estrogen levels and increase testosterone in women in the premenopausal stage, which leads to a reduced risk for breast cancer. A study conducted by scientists from the University of Leicester, UK also showed that drinking red wine decreased bowel tumor growth rate by about 50%. Other problems that red wine helps prevent include: blinding diseases, brain damages following strokes, severe sunburns, lung cancer, prostate cancer, type two diabetes, and liver disease.

2. Improved Mental Health

According to research conducted by a team of universities in Spain and published in BMC Medicine, drinking wine in moderation (two to seven glasses per week) can significantly decrease the risk for developing depression. Furthermore, scientists reported in The Journal of Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment that moderate wine drinking decreases dementia risk by 23%. Red wine can also reduce the risk for Alzheimer's.

3. Healthier Heart

By raising omega-3 fatty acid levels in red blood cells, red wine prevents coronary heart disease, according to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

4. Longer Lifespan

Research from Harvard Medical School published in Cell Metabolismoffer showed that red wine has anti-aging properties that come from the compound resveratrol (from the skins of red grapes) in wine. Testing on mice demonstrated that the compound benefited the health of mice undergoing a high-fat diet and allowed them to live longer.

Another study conducted by the University of London discovered that another compound, procyanidin, maintains blood vessel health.

However...red wine can also stain your teeth!

Chromogens, which are strong pigments in red wine, can instantly stain your teeth after a little sip because of the cracks and irregularities of enamel. Additionally, acid and tannins in red wine encourage the erosion of enamel because they allow chromogens to bind and dry your mouth. While red wine can reduce gum disease risk and the potential for tooth decay, it is important to consider these options to maintain your pearly whites:

1. Thoroughly Brush and Floss Before Drinking

By eliminating plaque that stains bind to, you can lower the risk for staining. Proper oral hygiene also decreases tooth decay and gum disease risk.

2. Rinse!

Rinse immediately after consuming red wine to prevent the wine from clinging to your teeth for too long and to avoid having a dry mouth. Don't brush right afterwards - wait at least 30 minutes, because your enamel is the most sensitive after eating! When you brush later, use a whitening toothpaste.

3. Drink and Dine

Even if it's just cheese and crackers, a little food can prevent the acid from sticking to your teeth. Fibrous foods such as broccoli, celery, and hard cheeses are the best options to help remove stains and promote the flow of saliva.

Is “An Apple a Day” Good for your Teeth?

With school starting up again, the easiest way to lead children away from candies and other sugary foods is to offer healthy snack alternatives. Eating fresh fruit is a good alternative to drinking fruit juices, which have a high level of acidity and sugar. Apples make great healthy snacks that are easy to throw into your child’s lunchbox. Apples contain a wealth of vitamins and nutrients, which are important for maintaining strong teeth.Apples and other crunchy foods, including vegetables, can act as nature’s toothbrush by helping to remove stains and brighten teeth. The tough texture of apples helps stimulate the gums, clean teeth, and fight bacteria. Yet, it is important to note that they certainly do not replace brushing and flossing! Chewing on an apple also increases the production of saliva. The more saliva, the better! Saliva helps wash away food particles and keep plaque from forming. In addition, apples are packed with fiber and a high water content, which helps to neutralize acids that destroy tooth enamel.

On the other hand, it is important to remember that apples do contain sugar and acid, which can erode teeth. To counteract this effect, brushing and rinsing your mouth afterward is essential in preventing erosion and other oral problems.

Indeed, a healthy diet does have an effect on dental health. Fruits containing Vitamin C can help promote a healthy smile. Individuals that lack vitamin C are at an increased risk of experiencing bleeding gums. Carrots, celery, and dark leafy vegetables also make good snacks because they are loaded with vitamin A, vitamin C, beta carotene, phosphorus, calcium and magnesium.

An apple a day can be great, but good oral habits must also be implemented. A balanced diet that includes grains, fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, and dairy is essential in maintaining healthy teeth. Although a healthy diet can “keep the dentist away” with unnecessary oral health problems, it is still necessary to visit the dentist for regular checkups and cleanings!

2. Preserving the integrity of facial structures. The implants is preventing the bone resorption, that can otherwise occur - the jawbone can deteriorate, losing its strength and firmness. Dental implants are the only dental restoration option that preserves and stimulates natural bone, actually helping to stimulate bone growth and prevent bone loss.

3. Confidence boost, quality of life improvement. With implant supported replacement teeth, the appearance of the smile is more natural and the teeth function more like natural teeth. This tooth structure can never be replaced and the long-term health of these teeth is compromised. Partial dentures have clasps that hook onto adjacent teeth, putting pressure on them as the partial rocks back and forth. Eventually these teeth can loosen and come out as a result of this pressure. Replacing missing teeth with implant supported crowns/bridges does not involve the adjacent natural teeth, so they are not compromised, or damaged.

7. Convenient oral hygiene. It is much easier to care for an implant supported crown, which can be cleaned like a natural tooth. In comparison, a tooth supported bridge requires the use of a floss threader for proper cleaning. It is also more convenient to clean a full set of implant supported replacement teeth than a traditional denture. Also, there is no more worrying that your dentures might slip or fall out.

Consuming Cheese Can Prevent Cavities

Happy National Cheese Lover's Day!

Dairy has been long known to be packed with a great amount of calcium, protein, and vitamin D in every serving. It has always been said that drinking milk and other dairy products will keep bones healthy and strong, but there has not been much research done on how beneficial dairy products are to oral health until recently. General Dentistry just published in their most recent journal issue that cheese and other dairy products have the potential of keeping cavities at bay.

Researchers that conducted the study looked at 68 participants between the ages of 12 and 15. The subjects had their dental plaque pH checked before eating cheese, milk, or sugar-free yogurt. Previous studies indicate that a pH level below 5.5 makes an individual more susceptible to the wearing down of enamel, resulting in tooth erosion. The higher the pH level, the lower the chance an individual has of getting cavities.

The subjects were randomly split into three groups: one that ate cheddar cheese, another that drank milk, and a final group that ate sugar-free yogurt. After eating their chosen type of dairy for 3 minutes, the subjects were asked to rinse their mouth with water. The pH level of each subject’s mouth was then measured 10, 20, and 30 minutes the dairy product was consumed. The researchers found that the individuals who drank milk and ate sugar-free yogurt did not have a significant change in pH level; however, those who ate cheese showed a great increase in pH levels after each time interval, indicating that this particular dairy product may be the key to preventing cavities. The results suggest that because there is more of a need to chew when consuming cheese, there is an increase in saliva production, which also leads to an increase of pH levels. The researchers also found compounds inherent in cheese binds to tooth enamel, preventing acid from causing further damage.

This new finding gives us more of a reason to add a slice of cheese to a sandwich. Continue to make sure daily that your diet increases and strengthens oral health!

Green Tea May Prevent the Onset of Oral Cancer

Green tea has been shown to a soothing drink that has the ability maintain healthy teeth and gums. Research also reveals that green tea extract can be used as a chemopreventative agent to fight oral cancer. The Daily Meal also reports that "Green tea has also been proven helpful to people who suffer from diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol and blood pressure, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, as well as even skincare and tooth decay."

Cancer Prevention Research published online that out of the oral leukoplakia patients who took the green tea extra, more than half of them experienced a clinical response. Their preclinical models indicated that green tea is filled with polyphenols, which can prevent the progression of cancer. Researchers have noted that while these clinical trials may not show definitive proof that green tea can be used to prevent cancer, these results can lead to more studies focusing on patients who are at risk for oral cancer. Green tea has shown to be promising because of its nontoxic nature, which is essential to prevent further harm in individuals battling cancer.

In phase 2 of their study, oral leukoplakia patients were given either the green tea extract or a placebo at one of three dosage amounts. Participants ingested the tea or the extract for three times a day for three months. After these three months, the patients underwent oral tissue biopsies. These biopsies were able to reveal that green tea extract were beneficial to the patients but also lead the researchers to believe that antiangiogenetic effects (growth and development of tissue) were the mechanism of action.

Out of the patients that took the two highest doses ended up, 58.8% of the patients had a clinical response, compared to the 36.4% of patients that took the lowest dose of green tea extract. Although these results were not statistically significant, researchers noted that the extract was well received by the patients and only a few of the patients that took the highest extra dosage showed signs of insomnia and nervousness.

The researchers note that there were only a few patients that participated in their clinical trials and that more research needs to be done to see if green tea can conclusive prevent oral or other types of cancer. Green tea needs to be looked at to determine whether it can provide long-term prevention for patients. However, this research proves to be a promising stepping-stone for further studies.

Green tea is stimulatory in nature as it contains some caffeine, which will naturally boost your metabolism. Green tea is also an antioxidant that, like wine, cranberries, and dark chocolate, will target and scavenge for toxins that could lead to cancer, blood clots, and even atherosclerosis.

Are You Sensitive?

Over 40 million adults in the U.S. have experienced pain from sensitive teeth. So what causes this uncomfortable sensation that’s so widespread?

The underlying cause is that the dentin, which is under your enamel (the hard protective layer covering your teeth) is exposed. The dentin has tiny tubes full of fluid that trigger nerves found in the pulp of the tooth when the dentin is exposed to heat, cold, or acidity. When that trigger happens, you feel pain.

Why does the dentin get exposed in the first place? There numerous reasons, but the most common are:

  • Brushing too hard: you can wear down your enamel by brushing too hard. An easy way to see if you are brushing too hard is to take a look at your brush. If all the bristles are pointing different ways, you need to ease up. Using soft bristles is also a good idea to minimize enamel erosion.
  • Bruxism (grinding your teeth): your teeth flex when you grind your teeth, which increases enamel erosion.
  • Gingivitis (or gum disease): gum sensitivity can lead to increased tooth sensitivity because more underlying dentin root surface is exposed.
  • Tooth decay: especially painful when the pulp is exposed.
  • Certain whitening products: although there are more recent whitening options available, such as our Sinsational Whitening, that cause minimal to no sensitivity.
  • Acidic foods: these foods increase enamel erosion, which exposes more dentin.
  • Plaque build-up: especially when the build-up is near the root surface.
  • Recent dental procedures: however, this sensitivity should only last between four to six weeks.

The Silent Destroyer

Gingivitis. If you don’t know the signs, it’s easy to miss until it’s too late. Put simply, Gingivitis is gum inflammation and generally comes before full-blown periodontitis, or gum disease. Not all cases of gingivitis, however, lead to gum disease, so make sure to visit your dentist, to keep your gums healthy!

Usually starting painlessly, Gingivitis has few indicators, some of which may be:

• Gums that bleed during and after tooth brushing or upon flossing
• Red, swollen, or tender gums
• Persistent bad breath or bad taste in the mouth
• Receding gums
• Formation of deep pockets between teeth and gums
• Loose, shifting, or misaligned teeth
• Changes in the way teeth fit together upon biting down, or in the fit of partial dentures.

Even if you don’t have any of these symptoms, you may still have gum disease, so make sure you regularly visit your dentist.

It’s especially good to visit your dentist for a check up if you have been ill or have had hormonal changes. Even changing medication, especially to one that causes dry mouth, can increase your risk of gingivitis.

Bad habits, such as smoking and general bad oral health practices, such as not flossing, also increase your risk. Also, check your family history since gingivitis and periodontitis are more frequent in people whose family has dealt with gum disease. In fact, the American Academy of Periodontology says that up to 30% of Americans may be genetically susceptible to gum disease.

In the meantime, before you meet with your dentist about your gums, here are some things you can do to increase your oral health and decrease your chances of gum disease:

• Stop smoking. Smokers are seven times more likely to get gum disease than nonsmokers, and smoking can lower the chances of success of some treatments.
• Minimize stress. Stress may make it difficult for your body's immune system to fight off infection.

• Eat healthily. Eating foods with antioxidants can help your body get over an infection.
• If you clench or grind your teeth, get fitted for a mouth-guard. Grinding and clenching can put force on supporting teeth, which can increase gum damage.

And don’t forget to brush and floss your teeth! Removing plaque daily is one of the best ways to keep your gums and teeth happy and healthy.
