February Calls for a Heart to Heart

February is a month that is near and dear to many of our hearts as it marks American Heart Month, which sheds light on the dangers of heart disease. This year marks the 57th consecutive American Heart Month. Heart disease, also known as cardiovascular disease, is the #1 cause of death in the United States causing about 1 in 4 deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Heart disease encompasses many types of heart problems. Coronary artery disease (CAD), which can cause a heart attack, is the most common type of heart disease in America.

Heart disease is often referred to as the "silent killer" because it often goes undiagnosed until a person experiences chest pain, chest palpitations, or shortness of breath for instance and the person experiences a heart attack, heart arrhythmias, or heart failure.

Take a look at some of the symptoms, according to the AHA:

Heart disease can impact anyone. According to the AHA's Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics – 2021, approximately 18.6 million people across the globe died of heart disease in 2019, which is a 17.1% increase over the past 10 years. In addition, approximately 523.2 million cases of cardiovascular disease were reported in 2019, which also represents an increase of 26.6% over 10 years.

Dating back to history, President Lyndon B. Johnson, who had himself experienced heart attacks, was the first to issue a proclamation in 1964 that declared February as American Heart Month. All month the American Heart Association (AHA) will be hosting exciting virtual experiences on relevant topics relating to heart disease each week. For example, the video "Heart to Heart: Why Losing One Woman Is Too Many" campaign will discuss how 1 in 3 women are diagnosed with heart disease each year. During this important month the AHA and other organizations emphasize the importance of heart health and continued research and efforts to help end this tremendous health threat!

Heart health is even more important as we battle against the COVID-19 pandemic, as the virus can have a negative impact on the heart and vascular system, as recent research shows according to the AHA. The AHA has also created the motto, "Don't Die of Doubt," which is a national awareness campaign reminding individuals that even as we conquer COVID-19 and there are concerns about visiting hospitals due to the presence of patients with coronavirus, hospitals are the safest place to go when you are experiencing symptoms. We also need to be conscious of our lifestyle decisions during this time of staying at home, as risk factors for heart disease include unhealthy behaviors including poor dietary habits, excessive alcohol consumption, and limited physical activity for example.

All in all, heart disease in many instances can be prevented with healthy lifestyle choices. According to the CDC, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, and smoking are top risk factors for heart disease. Shockingly, 47% of Americans according to the CDC have at least one of these risk factors. Other risk factors can include diabetes and obesity.

Using Your Heart for you and your Loved Ones

World Heart Day 2020 is here, and has a particularly impactful significance during these uncertain times. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to influence our current daily lives, heart health is important now more than ever as we all try to stay healthy and safe. Individuals with heart disease are at an increased of developing severe infection from COVID-19. Every year September 29th marks World Heart Day, which aims to spread awareness about heart disease and stroke prevention. The #1 cause of death in the world is cardiovascular disease (CVD). It results in the deaths of approximately 17.1 million people every year. Some of the most common causes of the disease include smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity, just to name a few.

This year’s message is to:

This powerful campaign reminds us to strive for living longer and healthier lives. The organization notes that using your heart is also about using your head to learn more about how to take care of your heart, using your influence to make positive behavioral choices to set good examples for loved ones, and acting in ways that support those who are vulnerable in society especially during this pandemic. In addition, the campaign encourages the government to implement policies to help improve heart health, as well as encouraging healthcare professionals and organizations to help individuals make positive health changes.

The positive thing is that heart problems can be prevented! Heart health is an extremely important topic as obesity, unhealthy diets, and decreased physical activity are becoming increasingly common in society. Treating our hearts better can include improving our diets, avoiding tobacco use, limiting alcohol intake, increasing our daily exercise, and making sure to attend your regular medical check-ups. It is necessary to routinely have your cholesterol, blood pressure, and heart examined to ensure that you are healthy.

It is also necessary for us to mention the important heart-mouth connection. Both heart disease and oral disease, like gum disease have been linked in many research studies. Moderate to severe gum disease has been associated with a greater risk for developing heart disease than when compared to someone with healthy gums. Since the mouth is the window to the rest of the body, oral bacteria and other germs from your mouth can travel through the bloodstream into other part of your body and cause damage to important organs like the heart. Brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily, along with having a well-balanced diet and regular dental check-ups will not only go a long way for your oral health, but also for your overall health. According to the America Heart Association (AHA), other cardiovascular conditions such as atherosclerosis (or clogged arteries) and stroke have also been linked to inflammation due to oral bacteria.

According to the American Association of Periodontology (AAP), some signs of gum disease include:

  • Red, swollen and sore gums
  • Bleeding gums when you eat, brush or floss.
  • Visible pus or other signs of infection around the gums and teeth.
  • Gum recession
  • Frequent bad breath/bad taste in the mouth
  • Loose teeth

High Blood Sugar Increases Risk of Heart Disease

To be heart healthy, you not only need to pay attention to your habits, but also your diet!

According to a study published in the journal Nature, scientists discovered that cardiac arrhythmia, a condition that causes irregular heartbeats, is linked to a biological pathway activated by abnormally high levels of blood sugar. This finding explains why diabetes greatly increases the risk for heart disease.

The National Institutes of Health claims that diabetics are four times more likely to have heart disease, and the American Heart Association notes that about 65 percent of the death of diabetics are caused by heart disease or stroke. Therefore, if you have diabetes or high blood sugar levels, make sure to check on your heart health!

Holistic/Biological Dentistry

You might think that your oral health only affects your teeth and gums, but did you know that it also has a huge impact on your overall wellness? That's why many dentists practice holistic dentistry, which links the health of the mouth to the well-being of the rest of your body.

For instance, many recent studies have provided evidence for the connection between gum disease and diabetes, pregnancies, Alzheimer's disease, certain cancers, and heart disease.

Many people think that the only difference between traditional dentists and holistic dentists is the use of mercury fillings. However, there are many other issues and differences as well.

 

Some main differences between traditional and holistic dentistry include:

1. Mercury Fillings

While traditional dentists use mercury fillings because they are easier to apply and are approved by the ADA and FDA, holistic dentists don't. They know that mercury, even in small amounts, is toxic and that these kinds of fillings weaken the tooth.

2. Root Canal Therapy

Holistic dentists don't recommend root canal therapy, because research has shown that it isn't effective except when the canal is completely sterilized and rid of bacteria (which is nearly impossible to do). They also point out that the sterilization process often involves toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde and that the remaining bacteria could increase the risk for breast cancer or heart disease.

3. Fluoride

Even though fluoride helps prevent tooth decay, holistic dentists reject ingested fluoride because there has been research linking ingested fluoride to cancer, bone issues, and fluorosis.

4. Biocompatibility Testing

While traditional dentists don't provide choices for cavity fillings or test materials they put on the body for reactions, holistic dentists may test biocompatibility and have a wide selection of composite filling materials.

High Calorie Drinks Reduced In Schools

A while ago, we blogged about a possible sugar tax being implemented on foods with added sugar and sweeteners, such as soft drinks. It was designed to discourage both adults and children from purchasing unhealthy food and drink. Now it seems that the next step has been taken by reducing the availability of these items in schools, helping to further combat obesity.

There has been a huge reduction in drink calorie content available in schools (90%) between 2004-10. These numbers reflect the partnership between the William J. Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association with major drink companies to lessen these drinks' availability.

Vending machines in schools now look much different than in previous years. An assortment of water, milk, juice and sports drinks is what's typically available versus an assortment of sodas before. An assessment of the foods offered in school cafeterias will be underway soon as well.

As the obesity rate climbed, officials began to take notice and search for the cause. Christopher Ashley, supervisor of food and nutrition for Springfield City Schools, said:

“Nine years ago I came into this segment of food service, and you’d see a Honey Buns and two Mountain Dews for breakfast. Now kids are going through the line and getting a better breakfast. That’s just the start.”

The alliance between the William J. Clinton Foundation and beverage companies should continue to make a difference. As stated above, obesity rates have dropped significantly in the past few years. With an emphasis placed on health and wellness not just in schools, but in the media, it is believed that the rate will continue to drop. Once the school menus reflect the nutrition of the drinks, students will be at a major advantage for better overall health.

Fit 50 Year Olds Have Less Chronic Disease

It's common knowledge that eating right and exercising regularly will help maintain a healthy lifestyle. However, a new study shows that 50 year olds that are in shape are less likely to develop sickness as they age. This helps magnify the connection between exercise and overall health.

Dr. Jarett Berry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, says:

"It has been known for decades that if you are more fit, you live longer. But it has not been clear that [if] you have a higher quality of life, you age better.

There was speculation that perhaps exercise and a healthy diet simply prolong the development of disease. However, according to this research, it is not the case. Chronic illness is indeed reduced a great deal in healthy, fit individuals.

The study evaluated over 18,600 men and women who had done a treadmill test to measure their cardio health at age 50. These results were then linked to disease such as diabetes, colon cancer, and heart disease among others.

The comparison showed:

"Among men in the lowest fifth of fitness scores, the rate of chronic disease was 28 percent per year. By contrast, the rate was only 16 percent per year among the top fifth. For women, the numbers were 20 percent per year versus 11 percent, respectively."

As we said above, eating right in combination with exercise is the best method for a healthier you. There's also genetic factors to take into consideration that may sway certain people in one direction, be it healthy or not so healthy. However, it should be said that there are other benefits of being fit and healthy, such as having a healthy weight, strong bones, and good mental health.
