All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth

Our team at WDG wishes you and your family a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! As the smell of home cooked meals, holiday treats, and Christmas trees fill the air, we hope that you are surrounded by loved ones during this holiday season. One of the songs you may hear during this seasons is, “All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth.” This classic Christmas song was written by Donald Yetter Gardner in 1944. Many children may be losing their "baby teeth," also known as primary teeth, and preparing for their permanent teeth to come in. Children will develop 20 primary teeth, typically all by the age of three. The important fact is that a lifetime of good oral health begins with primary teeth. The primary teeth help guide the permanent teeth into their correct position, and are necessary for the development of the mouth and facial muscles. Even though primary teeth are destined to come out before the permanent teeth come, their health is still extremely important. If primary teeth become decayed or damaged, the permanent teeth under them can also become negatively impacted. Be sure to encourage your child to develop good oral hygiene habits, even during the Holiday season!

This song is also a great reminder that your Holiday dental care is important to prevent problems with your teeth during the holidays. Some treats that you may want to beware of during this Holiday season include candy canes, sour candies, and sticky candies. These sugary treats often get stuck in your teeth and are full of sugars that bacteria feed off of, which can lead to cavities. Also, dried fruit contains a high amount of sugars and should be avoided. As far as beverages go during the Holidays, carbonated drinks such as Coca-Cola and other sodas should be ditched this Holiday season and replaced with water! This also goes for alcoholic beverages, as they are often high in sugar and can even lead to tooth staining, such as with red wine. Not to mention, avoid chewing ice as this can cause your tooth enamel to fracture or wear down. The same concept applies when chewing hard food items, such as nuts. Also, avoid using your teeth as tools during this holiday season. Opening presents or even bottles with your teeth can lead to cracked tooth enamel and other dental problems.

The Holiday vacation is no reason to take a break from your teeth. Be sure to keep up with your brushing and flossing. Remember, prevention is better than treatment! Make sure your dental check-ups are scheduled for the new year.

How Can Vitamin K2 Help My Health?

As we approach the holidays, our hearts and tummies begin to prepare for the tasty meals enjoyed with loved ones. There are a lot of vitamins and minerals that exist in the foods we eat that are beneficial, and sometimes even essential for our body to function properly. Many of us have been told that milk builds strong bones due to calcium and vitamin D, which work together to help maintain your teeth and bones. But what about the less popular vitamins, such as vitamin K2? Check out how vitamin K2 may provide benefits for your general and dental health:

First, what exactly is Vitamin K? Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin that is considered an essential nutrient necessary for blood clotting, calcium metabolism, bone health, and cardiovascular health. If your body is lacking vitamin K, your body's normal healing process may be impaired and you may be more likely to bleed.

Vitamin K has two main forms, K1 and K2. Vitamin K1 can be found in plant foods such as leafy greens and is made from the compound phylloquinone. On the other hand, vitamin K2 is found in animal and fermented foods, and from the normal bacteria within our human digestive system. Vitamin K2 is made from menaquinones. Not as popular in the Western diet, vitamin K2 can be found in Natto, a fermented soybean paste that is common in Japan, and in some cheeses. However, there is no recommendation for supplementation or daily intake of vitamin K2. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) describes vitamin K1 as the preferred form of the vitamin since it is less toxic, works faster, is stronger. However, vitamin K2 is also beneficial for our health for the reasons stated below.

Research suggests that vitamin K2 may protect your bones from osteoporosis and lower your risk of bone fractures. In addition, a research study published in Integrative Medicine: A Clinician's Journal found that vitamin K2 may contribute to keeping your blood vessel walls clear of calcium accumulation. Calcium deposits within blood vessels can lead to an increased risk of heart disease. Although more research needs to be conducted regarding vitamin K2 and its role in the oral cavity, some animal studies have suggested that it may play a role in lowering your risk of developing tooth decay. Vitamin K2 has been found to activate the protein osteocalcin, which is necessary for bone metabolism and the growth of new dentin within your teeth. it works together with vitamin D3 to carry calcium to your teeth and bones for normal absorption. It is also believed that vitamin K2 slows down the rate of tooth loss with age. Some studies have also suggested that vitamin K3 can help lower risk of developing diabetes, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, kidney disease, and lower oxidative stress in the brain related to Alzheimer's disease.

Ultimately, it is important to have a balanced diet, and keep up with a regular oral care routine, by brushing with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day for two minutes each time, flossing, and keeping regular dental appointments.

Merry and Bright Teeth for the Holidays!

As the holidays approach, your dentist and teeth may not be high on your list of things to think about. But, it's important to keep your oral health in mind so that you can enter 2019 with a healthy start! Take a look at these tips so that you can enjoy the holidays while keeping your teeth and gums healthy and bright:

1. Don't forget your oral health routine

Be sure to keep up your routine of brushing at least twice a day for two minutes, rinsing, and flossing. If you're looking for stocking stuffer ideas, toothbrushes are a great option! Toothbrushes should be replaced once the bristles look worn or approximately every 3 to 4 months. When looking for toothpaste, make sure to buy toothpaste with the ADA Seal of Acceptance and fluoride to help prevent cavities. Also, if your due for your dental visit make sure to schedule!

2. Protect your teeth

It may be tempting to use your teeth for situations other than chewing and speaking. You may get the urge to bite your nails to relieve stress, or use your teeth to open packages or bottles, but avoid using your teeth as tools at all costs! Be sure to grab scissors or a bottle opener instead of your teeth. Poor habits can lead to jaw problems, facial pain, sensitive teeth, and can even lead to cracked or loss of teeth.

3. Stay hydrated

Keep water by your side during the holidays and avoid sodas, juices, and sports drinks as they contain high amounts of sugar and create acids that can weaken your tooth enamel. Water with fluoride in it can keep your teeth strong, which is particularly important as you may be indulging in sweet holiday treats! Drinking water can also help keep skin healthy and glowing, and help eliminate bad breath.

4. Avoid chewing hard candies or ice cubes

The sugar in hard candies is just one thing to worry about. Crunching on hard candy can cause chipped or cracked teeth. Also avoid chewing on ice cubes as they could cause chipped teeth or cold sensitivity. Instead, let the ice dissolve naturally and try to stay away from hard or sticky candies that can weaken your tooth enamel.

 

It may not be easy to stay away from sweets and goodies during the holiday, but try your best to keep your teeth a priority!

Festive Stress Taking a Toll on Your Mouth?

As we approach the holidays, it can be an exciting, yet stressful time as we prepare to decorate, shop, and entertain for our loved ones. Even traveling, finances, or just having a large to-do list can add stress to your body and oral health. Sometimes you may not notice the negative impact that stress is causing to your teeth. Take a look at these common stressors and how they could be harmful to your smile:

Snoring

Snoring does not only cause loud noises at night time-It could also be causing issues with your oral health! Snoring occurs when there is not enough air moving through the throat and nose while sleeping. Snoring could be a result of many conditions, and some risk factors include being male, 40 years of age or older, family history of snoring, and pregnancy. A main complication of snoring is dry mouth. Dry mouth occurs when there is a lack of saliva, which is necessary for neutralizing acids made by bacteria within the mouth, and for moistening your gums and teeth. When there is a lack of saliva you may develop oral problems such as bad breath (halitosis), burning mouth syndrome, cavities, gingivitis, or mouth sores. Depending on the cause, interventions can include an oral appliance, weight loss, or a reduction in alcohol or smoking.

Tooth Grinding

A commonly known issue impacting your teeth is called bruxism, also known as tooth grinding. This often occurs during your sleep which can make it hard for you not to notice. In addition, jaw clenching can also cause similar effects including wearing your enamel down, gum recession, and weakening the supporting structures in your mouth that keep your teeth in place. Not to mention, it can also break or chip existing fillings in your mouth. Grinding and clenching are often due to anxiety or stress, but can also be caused by an abnormal bite. Some of the signs that can clue you in that you may be clenching or grinding include a sore jaw when you wake up in the morning, or your partner may notice clicking sounds during your sleep. Not to worry though, there are treatment options that can fix this. A night guard may be suggested, or relaxation methods including exercise or other stress management interventions may be advised by your dentist to prevent damaging your pearly whites.

Depression

Depression is a common condition for many individuals, and it can come and go in spurts during a person's life. It is important to talk with a Doctor or someone who can help if it begins to interfere with daily life including with the care of your oral and overall health.

Tips For Cavity-Free Holidays!

The holiday break is in full swing as we closely approach New Years! With time off from work, school, and other obligations, there's more time to relax and enjoy the company of family and friends. During this time, however, it's easy to develop a sweet-tooth. From wines to chocolates to decorated cookies and cakes, there's a lot of holiday treats that can harm your smile if you're not careful. Here are some things to keep in mind this holiday season:

1. Timing is important

It can be fine to indulge in sweets every now and then, but it's important to practice proper dental habits. Timing is also important. It helps to eat sweets and other sugary foods with meals because more saliva is produced. Saliva production is essential for washing away food particles and neutralizing acids produced by oral bacteria.

2. Avoid sticky foods

It's okay to be picky this holiday and choose foods that don't cling to teeth. Dried fruits are often a holiday favorite, but tend to stay on teeth longer than other foods. When eating sticky items, make sure to rinse and brush carefully.

3. Limit alcohol intake

Many of us are soon going to toast to the New Year! Be sure to limit your alcohol intake. Red wines can easily stain teeth. Also, too much alcohol can dry out your mouth.

4. Go easy on the hard candies

Hard candies can be more harmful for your teeth than other candies. In addition to containing a high amount of sugar, consuming hard candies puts your teeth at a higher risk for chipping or breaking.

5. Starchy foods may not be the best

Starchy foods often get trapped in your teeth. Take extra care of your teeth if you indulge in chips, cakes, and other starchy foods by flossing to remove all the food particles that can lead to plaque accumulation.

6. You can still have fun

Keep these hints in mind as you enjoy the holidays. Make conscious and tooth-friendly food choices, such as lean beef, fish, and whole grains. The holidays and the New Year are a great times to start planning healthier habits.

Wishing You and Your Family Happy Holidays!

treeToday, many across the world celebrate Christmas day by gathering with family and friends. In the United States, Christmas became a federal holiday in 1870 and has evolved overtime. It is both a christian religious holiday and a worldwide cultural tradition. Christians celebrate Christmas Day as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ. The days leading up to Christmas are typically marked by holiday parties, gift shopping, decorating Christmas trees, preparing meals, drinking egg nog, and, of course, waiting for Santa Claus to bring gifts and enjoy a glass of milk and cookies. Ever wonder where some of these traditions came from?

The Christmas tree tradition is believed to have originated in Germany in the 16th century. It is also believed that the widely known  16th-century Protestant reformer, Martin Luther, first introduced adding lighted candles to the trees. Now, approximately 30-35 million real Christmas trees are bought in the United States. Around 21,000 individuals grow Christmas trees for up to 15 years before they are sold. In New York City the famous Rockefeller Center Christmas tree tradition began in 1931 and is now annually covered with over 25,000 Christmas lights.

The beloved history of Santa Claus dates back hundreds of years and was inspired  by the monk St. Nicholas. It is believed that Nicholas was born around 280 A.D. in modern-day Turkey. St. Nicholas is known for being generous and giving away his inherited wealth to help others. A famous St. Nicholas story is that he saved three poor sisters from being sold into slavery by giving them a dowry so that they could be married. Rudolph, Santa's most famous red-nosed reindeer became popular due to Robert L. May’s poem in 1939. Many children today wait for Santa to arrive through the chimney with presents they've asked for on their Christmas wish-list.

In addition to gift exchanges, many enjoy a Christmas feast. Egg nog has become a Christmas holiday tradition for many. In the United States, the first eggnog made was consumed in Captain John Smith’s 1607 Jamestown settlement.

Spread a Smile: Donate to the Walker Wishes Holiday Toy Drive!

The holidays are a great time to share joy and give back to others! During this season of giving, even the smallest gift can make all the difference to children and their families. As you celebrate with your family, help us make this season special for children!

The Wellesley Dental Group is very excited to announce our participation with the Walker Wishes Holiday Toy Drive. The Walker Wishes Holiday Toy Drive is an opportunity for individuals to help make the lives of little ones even more special. By donating toys in support of this event, we are able to brighten the community and make a positive difference. We are a drop off location for Walker. From now until December 16th, donate toys to our office any time during our regular office hours! Drop off unwrapped toys between the ages of 3 and 14.

Walker School is located in Needham, Massachusetts and serves to provide intensive programs for youth experiencing emotional, behavioral, and learning challenges. Their mission is to positively impact the lives of children by cultivating hope and skills that can last a lifetime. Our very own Dr. Femina Ali serves on the Walker Advancement Team.

You can also purchase holiday cards to send to children. There are two different styles with information about Walker on the back of each card. The proceeds will benefit the youth Walker serves.

Indulgence in Sugary Sodas Can Lead to Poor Oral Health & Cardiovascular Disease

colaThe proven connection between poor oral heath and increased risk of cardiovascular disease should re-enforce the importance of new heath policy creation, focusing on reduction of sugars such as those contained in junk food, particularly fizzy drinks,  say experts writing in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine.

Poor oral hygiene and excess amount of sugar in the diet can cause periodontal disease and decay of the teeth-supporting bone. It is thought that chronic infection brought on by gym disease can lead to inflammation that will over time cause heart disease through atherosclerosis, hardening of the arteries. Despite sufficient evidence of the connection between the poor oral health and premature heart disease, the recent suggested UK national guidance on Cardiovascular disease prevention at population level does not suggest the strong need to reduce sugar consumption.

Dr Ahmed Rashid, Department of Public Health and Primary Care, University of Cambridge, who co-wrote the paper, said: "As well as having high levels of fats and salt, junk foods often contain a great deal of sugar and the effect this has on oral health may be an important additional mechanism by which junk food elevates risk of CVD." He added: "Among different types of junk food, soft drinks have raised particular concerns and are the main source of free sugar for many individuals."

The authors refer to the well-knows  New York 'soda ban' controversy which has brought a lot of attention to the issue. They stress more can be done about making the sugary sodas dominating the public areas in the United States. Dr Rashid said: "The UK population should be encouraged to reduce fizzy drink intake and improve oral hygiene. Reducing sugar consumption and managing dental problems early could help prevent heart problems later in life."

Our team wants to wish you happy holidays and share a few tips on how to protect your smile this time of the year!

Holiday season is upon us and we all want to look and feel our best for the celebration time!

Busy schedules and the stress of visiting stores after stores, trying to get everything on your wish list, will make it very easy to break your daily cleaning routine. Holiday banquets with plentiful amounts of delicious food and desserts, as well as alcoholic beverages that are usually highly acidic and can harm your enamel, can definitely make it more challenging to have a bright pearly smile for that family picture.

Here are a few things you can add to your holiday routine:

    1. Keep a pack of chewing gum or even a travel package of floss in your pocket/bag. It's a quick fix and will help you keep your breath fresh and get rid of some harmful bacteria.
    2. Indulge in moderation! If you get to enjoy a glass or two of wine or a different alcoholic beverage, be mindful of the acidity they can raise in your mouth. When choosing between drinks, go for the less sweet ones. Also, drink a glass of water in between to wash away some of the acidity.
    3. Always bring your toothbrush when you are travelling away from home.
    4. Get your dental work done before the holidays. It can be tempting to put off a root canal or filling until after the holiday fun is over, but the truth is that taking care of your dental needs before family, friends and festivities begin is the best way to make sure you don’t have an unpleasant dental surprise in the middle of your celebrations.
    5. Eat your carbs in one sitting, rather than keep snacking throughout the day. Every time a piece of candy is eaten it takes an hour for the acid inside the mouth to dissolve!

Statins is a commonly prescribed medication that helps patients with heart disease. But what’s more is that a new study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology demonstrated that statins can also be beneficial for those suffering from gum disease.

Periodontal disease is marked by chronic gum inflammation that affects approximately half of the U.S. adult population. Dr. Ahmed Tawkol of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School notes that there is a connections between heart and gum disease: both periodontitis and atherosclerosis are driven by inflammation. These inflammatory conditions are often seen to occur together, indicating to researchers that their biologies may be related.

A study was administered to test this theory. Patients with either heart disease or considered to have high heart disease risk were asked to take 80 mg of statin or 10 mg of stain daily for 12 weeks. PET/CT scans were used to observe inflammation over the course of the study. Results indicated that the 59 patients in the study demonstrated a significant reduction in gum inflammation, some after only 4 weeks of treatment. The researchers also found that the improvement of inflammation in the gums related closely with the improvement seen in inflammation in the arteries.

This study provides strong evidence that links atherosclerosis and periodontal disease. This research opens doors to new methods of treatments. Because of the relationship between these two diseases, medications that originally targeted one of these diseases may also be beneficial for the other. These results also points to better and improved oral hygiene to reduce inflammation in the gums can also lead to reduced atherosclerosis.

This study again shows the strong relationship between oral health and overall systemic health. Maintaining proper oral care can really go a long way for the body as a whole. Keeping up with oral hygiene can truly lead to a healthier smile and a healthier you!

And of course there are whitening strips. These strips are becoming more accessible and easy to use; some even simply dissolve in the mouth when applied! However, for individuals with more sensitive teeth, be mindful about the frequency of treatments used per week.
