All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth

Our team at WDG wishes you and your family a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! As the smell of home cooked meals, holiday treats, and Christmas trees fill the air, we hope that you are surrounded by loved ones during this holiday season. One of the songs you may hear during this seasons is, “All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth.” This classic Christmas song was written by Donald Yetter Gardner in 1944. Many children may be losing their "baby teeth," also known as primary teeth, and preparing for their permanent teeth to come in. Children will develop 20 primary teeth, typically all by the age of three. The important fact is that a lifetime of good oral health begins with primary teeth. The primary teeth help guide the permanent teeth into their correct position, and are necessary for the development of the mouth and facial muscles. Even though primary teeth are destined to come out before the permanent teeth come, their health is still extremely important. If primary teeth become decayed or damaged, the permanent teeth under them can also become negatively impacted. Be sure to encourage your child to develop good oral hygiene habits, even during the Holiday season!

This song is also a great reminder that your Holiday dental care is important to prevent problems with your teeth during the holidays. Some treats that you may want to beware of during this Holiday season include candy canes, sour candies, and sticky candies. These sugary treats often get stuck in your teeth and are full of sugars that bacteria feed off of, which can lead to cavities. Also, dried fruit contains a high amount of sugars and should be avoided. As far as beverages go during the Holidays, carbonated drinks such as Coca-Cola and other sodas should be ditched this Holiday season and replaced with water! This also goes for alcoholic beverages, as they are often high in sugar and can even lead to tooth staining, such as with red wine. Not to mention, avoid chewing ice as this can cause your tooth enamel to fracture or wear down. The same concept applies when chewing hard food items, such as nuts. Also, avoid using your teeth as tools during this holiday season. Opening presents or even bottles with your teeth can lead to cracked tooth enamel and other dental problems.

The Holiday vacation is no reason to take a break from your teeth. Be sure to keep up with your brushing and flossing. Remember, prevention is better than treatment! Make sure your dental check-ups are scheduled for the new year.

Dental Habits to Break in the New Year

Do you have your New Year's resolutions list ready for 2016? As we countdown to the New Year, it's time to put our best foot forward and leave behind any negative habits. This also applies to dental care. Consider breaking these dental habits in 2016 that are harmful to your teeth:

Nail Biting

Finger nails often contain many germs. Nail biting puts you at a high risk for developing a cold or other health problems by introducing these germs into your mouth. Nail biting can not only negatively take a toll on the health of your body, but also can impact your teeth. It is typically a nervous habit, and can chip teeth and impact your jaw. Avoid nail biting at all costs, and instead opt for better stress-coping mechanisms. Try painting your nails or holding something to keep your fingers busy to let go of a nail biting habit.

Brushing Too Hard

It may seem weird, but there is such a thing as brushing too hard. It's definitely important to brush for two minutes twice a day, but gently! Brushing with a hard toothbrush can damage both teeth and gums. Try using your non-dominant hand for brushing, or purchasing a soft toothbrush. Applying proper pressure when brushing is important for your mouth's sake!

Grinding and Clenching

Grinding and clenching teeth often occurs during stressful situations. This can lead to chipped or cracked teeth. It can also cause mouth pains and trouble chewing foods. Sometimes it occurs during sleep, in which you should notify your partner or family member if this is noticed. Mouthguards and relaxation exercises can help knock out this harmful dental habit!

Chewing Ice Cubes

Teeth can be fragile, and it is important not to wear them down by chewing hard substances. Chewing ice cubes can break or chip teeth, as well as damage fillings and other dental appliances in the mouth. Try drinking with a straw or drinking cold beverages without ice to prevent any temptation of chewing on ice cubes.

Snacking

Snacking, especially on sugary foods and drinks, increases your risk of developing cavities. Instead, opt for well balanced and filling meals to keep your teeth healthy. If you indulge in an occasional sugary treat, make sure to drink water to wash away any left over food particles.

Using Your Teeth As Tools

Using your teeth to open items, cut things, or complete other rough actions can wear down your teeth. This puts you at a higher risk of cracking and damaging your teeth, as well as injuring your jaw. Always make sure you have an actual tool on hand, such as scissors or a bottle opener to do the job -your mouth will thank you!

Think Warm, Think Spring!

Spring break is a beloved time of year, cherished by all who are able to enjoy warmer weather, time with family, and a break from school or work. Spring break is often the first vacation of the New Year for many individuals. It’s a time when you and your family can look past the cold winter and on to sunnier days full of fun events!

Whether you and your family plan on taking a vacation outside of Massachusetts, or simply enjoying the break at home, make sure to keep up with your dental care! Taking a break from your oral health is not the way to spend spring break. Neglecting your teeth can result in poor health and lead to big oral problems, including gum disease, tooth decay, root canals, tooth sensitivity, and more.

When it comes to oral health, you can never have too many good habits. Spring Break is a great time to brush up on good oral health habits. If you and your family plan on traveling, there are several things to consider on your fun time away from home. On your vacation, make sure that you have plenty of fluids in your body. Drinking water throughout the day will not only keep your body healthy in the warmer temperatures, but also will help to eliminate plaque buildup on your teeth and teeth staining.

Travel with all of your regular oral health essentials with you in your belongings. Make sure to pack extra travel toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss in an easily accessible place. Protect your toothbrush with a toothbrush cap to keep the brush away from germs or damage in your luggage. Once you arrive, uncover your toothbrush to avoid trapping moisture and bacterial growth. Also, it is best to leave your electric toothbrush at home so that you won't have to charge it everyday! Stay on top of your oral hygiene by brushing and flossing at least twice a day to avoid dental problems from arising.

Unhealthy foods and drinks can often sneak their way into your diet on vacations. Many often change their eating habits while on vacation thinking that it will not have an effect on the health of their mouths. You may be offered soda, candy, and other culprits that are bad for teeth. Although it can be hard to say no, stay away from sugary and acidic foods as they can and will lead to an unhealthy mouth. Instead, pack healthy tooth-friendly snacks such as apples, which acts as a natural cleanser for teeth. In addition, steer clear of biting on ice cubes, no matter how hot it is during your vacation! Using teeth as tools can lead to cracked or chipped teeth.

If it's time for a cleaning, visit the dentist before the break to ensure that there are no dental concerns that need to be taken care of before vacation. A quick check up can prevent discomfort later on when the fun is happening!

If a dental emergency occurs during your vacation, such as a chipped or cracked tooth, rinse with warm water and apply pressure to the affected area. Contact the dentist at your earliest convenience.
