The Perfect Smile for Valentine's Day

February 14th, 2019

Today on Valentine's Day we are reminded of all of the love that surrounds us. Pink and red flowers, cards, and treats may also make an appearance on this holiday. As we celebrate, make sure you're showing your smile some love too! Here's some tips on how you can keep your pearly whites glistening on your special date or day with loved ones:

Cavities and Kissing:

Did you know cavities can be contagious? Bacteria that cause tooth decay can transmit from one mouth to another through kissing or sharing utensils. The good news is, kissing helps stimulate saliva, which is necessary to wash away leftover foods and fight cavities. But, to prevent swapping germs, it is important to brush your teeth 2x a day for at least 2 minutes and floss for a healthy and cavity-free smile.

Bad Breath Be Gone!

Bad breath can be a burden, but there are a lot of things that can be done to help prevent it.  Bad breath is often a result of bacteria, so good hygiene habits like brushing and flossing are the easiest things to do to keep your breath smelling fresh. A lot of plaque and bacteria are hiding between teeth and on the surface of your tongue so don't forget these areas! There are also a variety of mouth rinses available in the store that are anti-microbial and help get rid of bacteria and bad breath. Not to mention, chewing xylitol gum can help stimulate saliva and keep your breath fresh.

Brighten Smiles with Whitening

Looking to get rid of stains or not as confident with the color of your teeth? If you'd like to brighten your smile, our in-office ZOOM! Whitening is the way to go, and also could be a great gift to surprise your loved one with.

Avoid Smoking

Smoking is not only bad for your lungs, it also has a negative impact on your mouth. It can cause oral cancer, bad breath, and stain your pearly whites.

Sweet Treats

One of the fun aspects of Valentine's Day is the sweet treats and desserts that you may indulge in. If you happen to have some goodies, just be sure to keep your teeth in mind. Avoid hard candies, or candies that are sticky such as caramels or gummies as they can be damaging to your enamel. Also be sure to rinse with water and try eating the sweets with a meal so that your saliva flow can help wash away the sugars that cause tooth decay.

We wish you a Happy Valentine's Day!

February 1st, 2017

16179204_10154146114150913_7667870998996610716_o

It's February, the month of Valentine's Day, which means that love is in the air! Circulate the love by giving blood to the Wellesley Community Blood Drive on Friday, February 17 from 1-6 PM sponsored by Wellesley Dental Group at the Wellesley Community Center! The drive, held in cooperation with the American Red Cross, aims to collect at least 50 units of lifesaving blood.

Millions of people in need are helped by the critical blood donations provided by American Red Cross. We are delighted to sponsor this event with this incredible organization and have the opportunity to help our fellow Americans through this blood drive. Your donation can make a huge difference, since every 2 seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood.

The American Red Cross has also issued an emergency call for blood and platelet donations due to cancellations from ice, snow, and subfreezing temperatures in many states.

Interested in helping a great cause? Join our Facebook event!

Here's what you need to know if you want to donate:

Donors with the following blood types are invited to donate by the Red Cross’ double red cell technology (2RBC): O- , O+, A- , B-. There are height and weight requirements, more information is available here.

You can also pre-register by visiting www.redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code WellesleyCC or click HERE. You can also complete pre-reading and health history questions online at Red Cross RapidPass and print out the form on the day of the blood drive.

Note: The American Red Cross is closely monitoring the Zika virus. We ask that you not to donate if any Zika Virus exposures apply to you. (Puerto Rico, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, South America, Miami, Dade and Broward Counties, Florida). Donate blood four weeks after your last risk exposure.

Please bring picture identification and remember to eat a healthy meal and drink plenty of fluids before donating! We look forward to seeing you!

How To Have a Tooth-friendly Valentine's Day

February 13th, 2016

Happy Valentine's Day! This is a great day to show your love and appreciation for the important people in your life, whether it's someone special, your friends, or your family. Did you know:

  • $345 million is spent on candy for Valentine's Day each year
  • Around 8 billion heart-shaped candies are sold from Feb. 1 to Feb.14
  • People eat around 58 million pounds of chocolate around Valentine's Day
  • The amount of chocolate an average American eats each year: 10-12 lbs

Considering all the ways that Valentine's Day can harm your teeth...Here are some tips on how to have a tooth-friendly and healthy Valentine's Day!

  1. Make sure to keep your breath fresh! Check out this cute and informative picture:

  2. To make a good first impression, make sure to keep your teeth white!

You can easily whiten your teeth if you follow these tips:
    1. Use whitening toothpaste
    2. Eat your fruits and vegetables (celery, apples, carrots galore!)- they can help remove substances that make your teeth yellow
    3. Strengthen your tooth enamel with a fluoride mouthwash
    4. Eat dairy products that are high in calcium such as cheese , which can help build up your tooth enamel and remove stains
    5. Get professional whitening treatment if you need it (which also happens to be a great Valentine's Day gift idea)!

  3. Avoid these sweets in particular!

Acid is produced when bacteria (from sweets and sodas) and sugar in your mouth interact. This can cause tooth decay that can destroy both the enamel and the inner layer of the tooth, which can lead to cavities. Therefore, make sure to avoid these sweets:

    1. Lollipops/hard candies
    2. Toffee
    3. Gum drops
    4. Taffy
    5. Caramel corn
    6. Peanut brittle
    7. Dried fruit
    8. Chocolate-covered raisins
    9. High-energy sports bars

Our team hopes that you all have a wonderful Valentine's Day!

Check out these cute Valentine's Day cards created by the ADA! These valentines are a nice way to incorporate something sweet into this lovely holiday without worrying about ruining your teeth. You can print them out here.

Local Specials for Valentine's Day/Weekend

February 14th, 2014

heart valentines love woman smile manValentine's Day, February 14th, is a joyous holiday celebrated by spending time with loved ones, sending and receiving hand-written letters, exchanging flowers, and consuming inordinate amounts of chocolaty goodness in the form of truffles and pastries.

Valentine's Day was sanctioned as a church holiday by Pope Gelasius around 498 A.D.  The specific origin of this lovely holiday remains unclear because the Catholic Church recognizes and celebrates three different saints, all named Valentine or Valentinus.  In one interpretation, St. Valentine fell in love with the daughter of his jailor.  Before he died, Valentine wrote her a letter and signed it as "From your Valentine" -- a phrase that we see today in many letters and cards.

Whether you are single, married, in a relationship, or all things in between, here are some great ways to celebrate the joy of love locally with friends or family.

Reliving My Babson Experience!

September 4th, 2013

It was nostalgic to be at Babson on Friday welcoming new families at the family orientation desk. I remember the first day my son Zann went to Babson. Like all other parents I had many thoughts... will he get enough food, will he manage his time wisely, will he get into any bad habits, is he getting too much independence, will he stay focused, will he stay connected? I am sure everyone feels some level of anxiety when dropping their kids off to college. Since I was only dropping him a mile down the road I figured I would be okay, however, it was far from the truth. Dropping your child at the dorm for the first time can make anyone emotional, including me.

Every year, I  volunteer at the Babson orientation because I remember that feeling. I want to be able to provide support and ease any anxieties for the families who perhaps may be dropping their kids off from the next town over or across the world. That parental feeling stays the same irrespective of the distance traveled to drop the kids.

This past Friday a family at the orientation was very anxious, especially the mother. I reassured her that her son is in a good place and validated her feelings. I know, I was there a few years ago. I let her know that Babson is a community and that her son will be well taken care of. Not only will he be getting a world class education, but speaking from experience, Babson will also make a man out of him.

About two hours later I saw the same family and this time the mom was smiling. I commented on it and her husband was quick to add "You made her happy!" (Previous to meeting me she had been very anxious and was crying). This just made my day. The comfort and joy we can give to others is perhaps the most fulfilling experience known to mankind. I am so thankful that Babson had invited me to be a part of this special event.

The story doesn't end here. This mother called me a day later with some questions and somehow we ended up having the family over for dinner at our home. Babson is truly a big family... and a real community. We are happy to keep the Babson tradition going.

Vacation week!

February 19th, 2013

It’s school vacation week! At WDG, we had an amazing President’s Day where we saw so many of our wonderful patients. We’re looking forward to seeing so many more this week. It really makes us happy when vacations come because it means that our busiest patients will have enough time to put their health first and come visit us for their much-needed care. This is especially true for our youngest patients who attend school.

Have you visited your dentist recently? Now might be a great time. It’s so important to prioritize your oral health, especially for children. Starting good oral health habits early on lead to a life of better oral and general health.

Besides visiting your dentist, here are some fun things you can do this vacation week!

1. Visit the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and check out their special learning opportunities with your child. Workshops are from 10 am – 4 pm.

2. It’s February Vacation week at the zoo! Visit the Franklin Park Zoo and experience the wonders of the animal kingdom and the jungle with your child. This week, the zoo is offering extra learning opportunities for young enthusiasts.

3. Even though it’s still chilly, if your child is outdoorsy, here are some great suggestions for family hikes from Mommy Poppins, like Walden Pond. It may be a good idea to call beforehand to make sure there are no weather-related issues.

4. Check out your local library for fun events, concerts, and movies! The Wellesley Free Library even has a Young Scientist event where they are bringing in owls!

5. Spend family time together. No matter what you do, having fun as a family is special! Get off the computer and connect with one another the old fashioned way. Cook, take walks, listen to music. It doesn't matter as long as you have each other.

Keep smiling and have a safe vacation!

Drs. Ali & Ali and the caring team at Wellesley Dental Group will be very happy to answer your questions and advise you on your oral health needs. Contact us today at 781-237-9071 or smile@wellesleydentalgroup.com!

Keep your kids cavity free!

February 12th, 2013

Sure, they may have baby teeth that will fall out soon enough; however, prioritizing good oral health practices in your children early on is important. Building good habits in your kids will positively influence their overall health for years to come. So what can you do now to help your child’s future?

  • Make sure they brush twice a day every day and start flossing early on so they get into the habit now. Plaque, a bacterial film, builds up and in between the teeth, so consistent removal is important. If plaque is left to sit, it can cause decay and gum problems.
  • Make an appointment for your child’s first visit if you haven’t yet. It’s a good idea to make an appointment as soon as the child’s first tooth comes in or no later than their first birthday.
  • Set a good example by prioritizing your own oral health and remember, the way in which you talk about the dentist will affect your child’s expectations of their own dental visits. By staying positive and sharing good experiences with your child, you will keep your child at ease. Going to a dentist is a positive thing and it’s great when children look forward to it. Ask you dental office if you can bring your child beforehand for a show and tell! Help your dentist build a lasting relationship with your child.
  • Watch what your child eats. Sugars don’t come solely from candy and juices. In fact, a recent study discovered that the food that causes the most cavities isn't sweet at all, crackers. Most crackers are highly processed foods and are a feasting ground for bacteria, which deteriorates tooth enamel. A better option for your children are whole grains, unprocessed foods and be sure to stay away from sticky foods, which can get caught between teeth and within the groves of the tooth surface.

Oral hygiene is an integral part of the day, like eating breakfast. Help your child set him/herself apart from the alarming number of children who have tooth decay. In fact, according to the CDC, 25% of children between the ages of 2-5 have tooth decay. With better oral health practices from the start, this can change.

For more great health tips, please visit the ADA's website. If you want an in depth guide, go to this wonderful resource from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists that goes from pacifiers to fluoride treatments.
