The future of dentistry is digital!

July 10th, 2017

"The future of dentistry is digital" says Biomed Central of Oral Health. It is true, the future of dentistry is indeed digital.

Consider the last time you had an impression taken at the dentist's. That feeling of discomfort and the recurrence of the ultimate gag reflex made your dental experience, surely, less enjoyable and your dentist's experience more nerve-racking. In addition to that, the custom design of the trays, the materials used, and sending the impression to lab and getting the plaster model back is time consuming and expensive.

Therefore, recently the use of Intraoral Scanner (IOS) devices is becoming more and more popular. The technique is referred to as taking optical impressions. It works by projecting a beam of light that hits the surface of the teeth and a high-resolution camera captures the distortion that the beam undergoes. This device can collect the complete shape and size of the dental arch and then those pictures can be translated into a 3D model.

The application of this new technology is vast in the dental field. IOS is especially very helpful when used for dental implants, in the preparation of prosthesis to model and fabricate restorations, in surgical dentistry for guided surgery and in orthodontics to precisely make aligners, or other customized orthodontic devices.

In addition to the ease that comes for the dentist with the immediate results, it is also well tolerated by patients. In addition, the 3D models are obtained on the computer and can be stored with an easier access for a longer time than the collection of breakable plaster models.

Here at Wellesley Dental Group, we embrace the new cutting-edge technologies that are shaping the dental field. We have been using our 3D scanner with great success, and patients have reported that it is much easier than traditional impressions. Call us today at 781-237-9071 to find out more!

FDA Approves New Intranasal Dental Anesthetic

September 30th, 2016

Do you have a fear of needles? Have no fear! There's now a form of dental anesthetic that requires no needles at all and can be administered intranasally.

On June 29, 2016, a regional nasal spray anesthetic called Kovanaze (a mix of tetracaine and oxymetazoline, a nasal decongestant) produced by St. Renatus, LLC was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Although Kovanaze is only safe to be used during restorative procedures for patients over 88 pounds as of now, the company plans on expanding its use to children too.

While Kovanaze's side effects include rhinorrhea, nasal congestion, and nasal discomfort, the results of a recent Phase 3 clinical trial conducted by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine provided evidence that the Kovanaze was safe and effective.

This development is great news for those who fear needles and can help decrease the number of accidental needle-stick injuries as well.

Winter Break at WDG

January 28th, 2013

This winter we had a very special addition to our team when Wellesley College Junior and member of the Pre Dental Society, Christine Lee shadowed at WDG as she prepared for dental school. Originally from Seoul, South Korea, Christine is studying chemistry at Wellesley and enjoys cooking Korean food and playing the clarinet (although her time away at college has been a bit too busy for her to play much music).

She first realized her love of dentistry in high school when she accompanied her father, who is a dentist, to Nepal on a missionary service trip. They stayed there for a week at an orphanage. From then on, she has been single-minded in her pursuit of her dream to be a dentist.

Originally, she was thinking of applying to dental school in Korea, but last October, she realized she could go to dental school in the States. However, that meant she had many hours of shadowing to do! Searching for Wellesley’s best dental practice, Christine spoke to numerous sources and found that WDG is one of the most highly recommended practices in the area. The one thing that really convinced her that WDG was where she wanted to spend her winter break was that our mission statement reminded her of her dad’s. He, too, puts his relationship with the patient above all else.

She had a lot of fun over the month of January, organizing charts, experiencing the teamwork day-to-day, and becoming part of the WDG family. Dr. Ali even helped her stay relaxed and calm when she got worried about meeting new patients. The thing that resonated with her most, however, was Drs. Ali & Ali’s attitude toward their patients. Comfort and communication are their top priorities during treatment. Christine could see herself in their shoes post-graduation.

When not busy taking notes and absorbing everything dentistry, Christine took time to get to know the team. She had fun chatting with Carmen about her background and winter trip to Puerto Rico, she helped Julia on her search for an intern, and every day would light the room up with her smile.

Today, she will resume her classes at Wellesley as the spring semester begins. The Team at WDG will miss seeing her every day! She still doesn’t know the exact field in dentistry she wants to pursue, but is thinking that general dentistry might be where she wants to go. She doesn’t want to come into her practice with an attitude of, “I’m a doctor, you should listen to me.” Instead, she wants to be a dentist like her father and Drs. Ali & Ali.  Putting the patient first, truly serving them and building a relationship: that is what she really wants to do.

Outstanding Yelp Review

August 8th, 2012

We recently received the below review on Yelp. We are truly speechless and touched by our patient's kind words and comments. Thank you so very much!

08/07/12

"After a negative experience at another local dentist, I followed my friends' advice and took my then 2.5 year old twins to see Dr. Femina Ali at Wellesley Dental Group.  Immediately, she put my children's minds at ease--even conducting my daughter's dental exam in a waiting room chair when she was too nervous to sit in the big dental chair.  Dr Ali's patience and natural ability with children has had such a positive impact on my children that they actually LOOK FORWARD to their semi-annual cleanings and visits.
Once we saw firsthand their high level of service and dedication at the Pediatric level and realized that they work with adults as well, my husband and I switched for our own dental visits as well.  Now we all go as a family, which I feel sets an especially good example for my kids.  They see that we're making our dental care a priority, so they are as well. My husband and I have both needed fillings in the past five years, and Dr. Ejaz Ali is an absolute perfectionist (which we love)!  Using cutting edge technology, he makes a mold to not only fill the tooth, but to make it a seamless match that will last a lifetime and look like it was always part of the tooth.  He did such a great job that I opted to have my previous fillings taken out and replaced with his handiwork.  My teeth look great and my smile is brighter and healthier than ever!

In addition to Drs. Femina and Ejaz Ali, I also have to mention their staff.  They employ a team of people who are warm, engaging, and passionate about dental health.  In the office and representing the practice around town, they make everyone feel welcome and take a genuine interest in each patient.  They even help entertain our kids while we're having our teeth cleaned!

Over the years, we have used their Oral Surgeon Dr. Ghazi to extract numerous teeth from both children.  He has the gentlest touch and always took great care to make it quick, easy, and painless for my children.  My children have also seen Dr. Emad--their orthodontist--to have their teeth evaluated for future orthodonture needs.  As a busy working mom, I am so grateful to have these services offered in-house, so I don't have to go elsewhere.  It makes it so much easier for me, especially knowing their high standard of care.

All in all, we can't say enough about the Wellesley Dental Group.  They are what every dental practice should be.  After six years as patients and friends of the Wellesley Dental Group -- we wouldn't trust our teeth and smiles to anyone else!!" - Joanna
