Will Nasal Breathing Help Fight Coronavirus?

As the number of COVID-19 cases across the United States continues to rise, scientists and researchers are continuously trying to find ways to help control and beat the virus. Research is currently being conducted to determine if nasal breathing can help lower the risk of contracting coronavirus. You may be wondering, why would breathing through your nose be beneficial?

Interestingly, breathing through your nose and mouth are two completely different methods of breathing. Nasal breathing is connected to your diaphragm and signals a response from your parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), also known as your rest and digest system. The PNS acts on your heart, lungs, and digestive tract. On the other hand, breathing through your oral cavity signals your sympathetic nervous system (SNS), also known as the fight or flight system. The SNS acts in opposition to the PNS, and instead elevates your pulse and breathing rates, while slowing digestion. Breathing through your nose, rather than your mouth, is the best way to receive the optimal amount of oxygen. Here’s why:

Your nose produces nitric oxide, which helps increase the transport of oxygen throughout your body by allowing your blood vessels to dilate. It also helps relax and open your airways in the lungs, acting as a bronchodilator. Nitric oxide is a huge plus to the immune system too, as it has antifungal, antiviral, antiparasitic, and antibacterial effects. In addition, your nasal turbinates function to warm and humidify air as it moves into the lungs, helping to filter and block harmful particles from entering your body.

According to scientists, humming has been found to increase the production of nitrous oxide in the sinus cavities surrounding the nose. Researchers revealed that the sound waves from humming increase the speed of gas exchange, and can help provide some relief for individuals with a sinus infection (Sinusitis). Foods high in nitrates, including leafy green vegetables, beets, and garlic for example, may also increase the concentration of nitrous oxide in the body and provide the same health benefits. In hopes to find treatment and prevention methods against COVID-19, clinical trials have currently begun to investigate the direct application of nitrous oxide to the respiratory system.

It can be hard to breathe through your nose at times, especially when you have sleep apnea, allergies, or are sick and congested, or even when you have your mask on to help fight coronavirus. Having a stuffy nose is a pain, and we often don’t notice how important the nose is until it isn’t functioning properly.  When your airway is obstructed, your mouth naturally opens to allow air flow to your lungs. However, breathing through your mouth doesn’t offer the same benefits as nasal breathing, and can even lead to health problems. Breathing through your mouth increases dehydration and inflammation in the body. Mouth breathing can cause enlarged tonsils/adenoids, dry mouth, bad breath (halitosis), chronic fatigue, irritability, dry lips, periodontal disease, and throat/ear infections, and other conditions. Many studies have also shown that breathing through the mouth can make individuals with asthma experience worse symptoms.

In children, mouth breathing can lead to several physical and cognitive challenges. Children who aren’t treated for mouth breathing can develop misaligned teeth, gummy smiles, facial deformities including long narrow faces/mouths, sleep disorders, lack of concentration, poor posture, or poor growth.

Talk with your dentist if you notice or believe that you or your child is mouth breathing. Practicing nasal breathing makes perfect! Also, be sure to try to reduce your stress levels, as stress can also lead to abnormal breathing patterns.

Breathing through your nose is important for your health! It can be our first line of defense against airborne particles, and is especially important to make a habit during these unprecedented times. While wearing your mask, initiate slow breaths through your nose to help lower the amount of carbon dioxide inhaled. This will help reduce your risk of experiencing trouble breathing, headaches, and dizziness.

WDG Re-Opening Safety Plan

With uplifting news from Governor Baker, we remain optimistic for the future and have safety for both our patients and dental team as our top priority, as always! With the Governor's recent announcement that it is now safe to begin the first phase of reopening within the four-phase plan, we have initiated a "soft re-opening" from May 26th until June 7th, which consists of seeing patients for emergency procedures and pressing dental needs. Barring any changes, we plan to fully re-open on June 8th. 

Our lives have all been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in some form, but together we will overcome this crisis. Although your dental visits will not be exactly the same as before, we want to ensure you that your safety will always be our foremost concern. To prepare for our re-opening, we have made significant changes, including adding new in-office equipment, staff training, and additional safety precautions following science-based recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Dental Association (ADA).

Spring into Sports with Facial Protection

To those who have long awaited spring, the days are starting to get brighter, and warmer! With spring comes many joys, including the beginning of the spring sports season. Not to mention, April is National Facial Protection Month, which is sponsored by the Academy for Sports Dentistry, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Dental Association, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the American Association of Orthodontists. Whether you'll be out on the field playing or watching from afar, it's important to spread the word to both children and adults participating in outdoor activities about the necessity of keeping their face, head, and mouths protected. It is important to take the necessary precautions, such as easily putting on mouth guards and helmets, to prevent sports-related injuries and the unwanted trip to the emergency room.

The Academy for Sports Dentistry highlights these five simple safety tips to keep your body healthy and safe:

  1. Mouth Guards are a Must. We're all aware that unfortunately, accidents happen. Mouth guards are can be customized by your dentist to ensure comfort. Mouth guards keep the teeth held together and allow for regular speech and breathing.
  2. Don't Forget about Helmets .  Helmets absorb the energy of an impact and help prevent damage to the head.
  3. Wear Protective Eyewear.  Eyes can easily be damaged during sports activities and it is necessary to protect them with eyewear!
  4. Shield Your Face and Skin.  In sports such as hockey and football, it is important to wear protective facial shields to prevent facial damage.
  5. Promote Mandatory Protective Gear.  Unfortunately, it is only mandatory for athletes who play football, hockey and boxing to wear mouth guards. Promote and spread the word of the importance of wearing mouth guards and sports gear for ALL sports!

A recent study conducted by study by the University of Alabama at Birmingham found that the five most common causes of childhood injuries were basketball, football, bicycling, playgrounds and soccer. Approximately 12 million individuals ranging in ages from 5 and 22 years suffer a sport-related injury each year, which results in 20 million lost days of schooland around $33 billion in medical and dental costs! But, these injuries CAN be prevented by following the necessary steps stated above.

March 6-13: National Sleep Awareness Week

Have you been getting 7-9 hours of sleep every night? If not, make sure to add "better sleep" to your goals this month, because March 6-13 is the National Sleep Foundation's National Sleep Awareness Week! Check out this list of tips and the 2016 SAW Infographic.

In order to get a good night's sleep, here are some recommendations from the National Sleep Foundation:

  • Turn off electronics such as mobile devices and laptops (which give off blue light that can prevent you from falling asleep) before going to sleep.
  • Schedule enough hours of sleep. Plan ahead and stick with the same schedule.
  • Even a little exercise can mean better sleep.
  • Create a sleep-friendly environment (a comfortable bed, closed curtains, no loud noises, etc.).
  • Have a bedtime routine (relaxing exercises, deep breathing, light reading, calming music, etc.).

You may think that missing a few hours of sleep is no big deal, but the quality and quantity of sleep you get can have a huge impact (both short-term and long-term) your overall health. Still not convinced? Here are some reasons why sleep is important from the NIH's National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute:

Mental Health

A lack of sleep can lead to depression, suicide, risky behavior, and other emotional problems. It changes the brain's activity, which can cause children and adolescents in particular to lose focus, feel unmotivated, or have mood swings.

Brain Health

Adequate sleep is crucial for proper brain function, because it allows your brain to solidify what you've learned and get ready to learn more the next day. Don't think that pulling an all-nighter will help you score better on your exam: sleeping well improves learning and helps you solve problems more efficiently.

Physical Health

Sleep is connected to the healing of heart and blood vessels, maintenance of hormone levels, growth, and the immune system. If you don't get enough sleep, you could have a higher risk of heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, or stroke.

Safety

Your safety could be at risk when you don't get enough sleep. Sleep deficiency means a slower reaction time, more opportunities for mistakes, and decreased productivity. You definitely don't want to be driving when you feel sleepy!

Graco Recalls Harmony™ High Chairs Due to Fall Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following product. Consumers should stop using product immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Graco Harmony™ High Chairs

Units: About 1.2 million

Manufacturer: Graco Children's Products Inc., of Atlanta, Ga.

Hazard: The screws holding the front legs of the high chair can loosen and fall out and/or the plastic bracket on the rear legs can crack causing the high chair to become unstable and tip over unexpectedly. This poses a fall hazard to children.

Incidents/Injuries: Graco has received 464 reports of screws loosening/falling out and/or plastic brackets cracking causing the high chair to tip over unexpectedly. These tip-over's resulted in 24 reports of injuries including bumps and bruises to the head, a hairline fracture to the arm, and cuts, bumps, bruises and scratches to the body.

Description: This recall involves all Harmony™ High Chairs. The Harmony™ high chair was manufactured from November 2003 through December 2009 and is no longer in production. The model number can be found on the label that is located on the underside of the foot rest.
