Robbed of a Good Night's Rest?

Sleep is an important part of each day, so much so that the effects of a restless night can change the entire productivity of our next day! Unfortunately, many people suffer from sleeping disorders. In fact, nearly 70 million adults in the United States have a sleeping disorder, the most common of which is sleep apnea. According to the National Sleep Foundation, a whopping 18 million adults in America have sleep apnea. So, what exactly is sleep apnea? There are two main types to know about:

  • The most common form, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), is a condition involving involuntary temporary interruptions in breaths for at least ten seconds at a time due to upper airway blockage. This causes a disrupted sleeping pattern and low blood oxygen levels, which can contribute to several health issues.
  • Central sleep apnea is much less common and is characterized by failure of the brain to signal the necessary muscles involved in breathing.

As a result of the interrupted breathing pattern, individuals with sleep apnea often produce snoring and choking sounds throughout the night. You may be wondering, what’s the big deal about having sleep apnea? Sleep apnea does not only just interrupt your night’s rest, it can also put you at a higher risk of developing many conditions, including high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, diabetes, depression, and worsening of ADHD.

Who does sleep apnea affect?

Obstructive sleep apnea can impact people of all ages and any gender, however, there are some factors that can place some people at higher risk. This includes people 40 years of age and older, smokers, heavy alcohol users, males, African Americans, those who have a family history of sleep apnea, and individuals suffering from obesity, sinus problems, or allergies. Your anatomy also plays a role in your risk of developing sleep apnea. People with nasal septum deviations, a thicker neck, narrow throat, large tongue, small jaw, or enlarged tonsils are at higher risk of sleep apnea.

Lowering Liver Cancer Risk with Good Oral Hygiene

Why is it important to take care of your teeth? Some people may be wondering how their oral hygiene habits affect their overall well-being. There’s increasing awareness that poor oral health is linked to more than just issues found within the mouth. Research has consistently shown us that poor oral health can be linked to heart disease, diabetes, and stroke, just to name a few associations. Now, a recent study conducted at Queen's University Belfast in the United Kingdom has found another possible link between oral health and gastrointestinal cancers, for instance, liver, colon, rectum and pancreatic cancer.

Just about 60,000 people each year in the European Union are killed by liver cancer. This is ranked as the 6thmost common cancer related death, with only an 11% five-year survival rate! The study looked at the oral health of about 469,000 people in the United Kingdom, noting conditions such as loose teeth, gingival and periodontal diseases, missing teeth, and tooth decay. Although the study did not find significant evidence between gastrointestinal cancers and poor oral hygiene, people with poor oral health may have a 75% increase in developing liver cancer according to the study. However, more research is needed to better establish the mechanisms behind this connection. Researchers are interested in investigating the role certain microbes found originally within the mouth, including Fusobacterium nucleatum, may have in liver cancer.

The good news is, with healthy lifestyle habits including diet, exercise, oral hygiene, and avoidance of behaviors including smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, you can lower this risk!

It is important to schedule regular dental visits, and keep up with brushing at least twice a day, and flossing at least once a day to keep your mouth healthy. Keeping your oral health and liver in check also includes eating well and maintaining a nutritious and balanced diet.

September Is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

What is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month?

Did you know that over 23 million children are obese or overweight in the United States? National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month is a yearly campaign with the goal of letting individuals know the health hazards of obesity, particularly for children. Approximately one third of children in the U.S. are at risk of type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease. But, with the knowledge and proper resources, we can make these statistics and the health of our children better. Several organizations and professionals will be joining together especially this month to raise money, conduct research, and provide treatment to help battle childhood obesity.

Childhood obesity is a serious public health problem that can have a lifelong impact on the overall health. Chronic conditions such as asthma, joint issues, Type 2 diabetes, and sleep apnea may develop at higher rates due to childhood obesity. Also, it has been found that children with obesity often are more likely to experience depression and lower self-esteem. Surprisingly, obesity is also linked with an increased risk of developing periodontal disease due to the body's inflammatory response.

Several factors play a role in childhood obesity, such as genetics, metabolism, your child's home and community environment, as well as eating behavior and level of physical activity. It is important to encourage your child to stay active, get regular sleep, and to have a tooth-friendly healthy diet. When your child's energy is balanced it allows for healthier growth.

Some ways to help prevent obesity include measuring your child's Body Mass Index (BMI). This can be done using the CDC’s Child and Teen BMI Calculator to help identify your child's risk for obesity. Most importantly, make sure your child is provided with nutritious meals that include fruits and vegetables. Now that school is starting up, make sure to pack healthy lunches, which will not only keep your teeth healthy, but also your body! Have your child avoid sugary foods and beverages. Allow a certain amount of time for your child to be involved in physical activity each day. Not to mention, be a role model by following the same guidelines!

Want To Prevent Cancer? Brush Your Teeth!

Did you know that the simple act of brushing your teeth can help decrease your risk for bowel cancer?

You may think that your oral health only affects your mouth, but it's also linked to your overall health. Why, you ask? The bacteria in your mouth that causes your gums to bleed can travel through the bloodstream to areas of the body, which could increase the risk for heart disease, stroke, and even Alzheimer's. Having plaque on the surface of your teeth increases your risk for premature death as well.

One of the areas that bacteria can affect is the bowel. Since this specific type of bacteria, fusobacteria (a kind of bacteria that is very commonly found in patients with unhealthy guts), are anaerobic (without oxygen), the bowel is a suitable environment. Due to a protein they have, the fusobacteria can bond to sugar molecules polyps (benign growths) and cancer tumors. When they stick to the polyps, they enhance the growth of tumors.

In the bowel, the bacteria could exacerbate tumors by turning pre-cancerous cells into cancerous cells or enlarging tumorous cells. Therefore, the microbes could spark the development of cancer.

Do you wake up breathless?

Do you often feel sleepy or fatigued throughout the day for no reason? Or snore loudly and wake up short of breath in the middle of the night? Then you may experience sleep apnea, a condition that stops your breathing periodically while you sleep (up to 20-30 times per hour).

When you stop breathing, your brain wakes you up due to the lack of oxygen in order to restart your breathing. Many people don't remember waking up in the middle of the night, so they think they're getting enough sleep but end up feeling drowsy during the day.

Sleep apnea, a serious medical problem, can lead to high blood pressure, which increases the risk for heart failure and stroke. The drowsiness during the day can be dangerous for driving or cause complications with medications or surgery.

Some symptoms of sleep apnea include:

  • insomnia (difficulty sleeping)
  • loud snoring
  • waking up breathless
  • snorting or choking sounds
  • headaches when waking up
  • falling asleep unintentionally during the day
  •  extreme drowsiness throughout the day

The three types of sleep apnea are:

  1. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) (due to collapsing of soft tissue in the back of the throat)
  2. Central sleep apnea (CSA) (muscles don't receive proper brain signal)
  3. "Mixed" or "complex" sleep apnea (combination of obstructive and central)

Risk factors include:

  • OSA is more common in males and in older adults (40+)
  • obesity
  • smoking
  • drinking
  • using tranquilizers/sedatives
  • family history
  • heart disorders
  • neuromuscular disorders
  • strokes
  • brain tumors

Treatment options:

  • losing weight
  • stop smoking
  • sleep on side instead of on back
  • oral devices
  • surgery (if severe)

Benefits of Living Near Trees

It's spring, which means it's a great time to spend some time relaxing in the sun and admiring the beauty of nature.

Did you know that living near trees is proven to benefit our overall health? According to a recent study published in the journal Scientific Reports and conducted by University of Chicago psychologist Omid Kardan and his research team, nature can improve both cognitive and psychological aspects of our health.

This team of researchers examined the connection between the health records of more than 30,000 Toronto residents and Toronto's dataset of around 530,000 public, urban trees with the addition of private greenspace measured by satellites. The public tree data was grouped in terms of location, species, and diameter. The health records included self-reports and cases of cancer, diabetes, mental health problems, and heart problems. Although self-perceptions can be subjective, Marc Berman, co-author of the study and psychologist at the University of Chicago, says that they are mostly similar to objective measures of health.

Berman also noted that the public trees had the strongest impact on health. After comparing the effect that trees have on health to other factors such as wealth and age, the researchers discovered that adding 10 trees in an urban block can improve one's perception of health in similar ways to increasing one's income by $10,000, living in a neighborhood that has a median income higher by $10,000, or being younger by seven years! The study also concluded that trees not only improve self-perceptions, but also cardio-metabolic conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and obesity.

Although these findings are powerful, they are "correlational," and therefore do not directly prove that trees cause better overall health. However, that doesn't mean that there aren't possible explanations. For instance, another study has shown that urban trees can remove ozone and pollution from the air and therefore improve the quality of air and protect people from these dangerous substances. Furthermore, Berman believes greenery is associated with a reduction of stress and increased motivation to exercise. Stress can lead to problems such as bruxism (grinding teeth and jaw clenching), gum disease, and canker sores, so trees can improve oral health as well!

Therefore, if you plan on moving to a new neighborhood, make sure to add "lots of trees" to your checklist!

Sleep Apnea and Permanent Tooth Extraction

Sleep apnea is common condition that can lead to trouble sleeping and cause tiredness throughout the day even after a full night's rest. Individuals with sleep apnea experience one or more pauses in breathing during their sleep that can last from seconds to minutes. Aside from excessive daytime sleepiness, signs of sleep apnea also include dry mouth, headache, and snoring, just to name a few.

Research has found that sleep apnea may increase the risk of of high blood pressure, heart problems, stroke, obesity, and diabetes, and the chance of getting into a car accident.

So, you may be wondering how this condition plays a role in dentistry. Some studies suggest that getting teeth extracted for braces can increase one's risk for developing sleep apnea.Orthodontic treatment is the perfect solution to correcting crowded teeth, protruding teeth, gapped teeth, and jaw problems. For well over 50 years and still today, dentists have debated the treatment of extracting permanent teeth for orthodontic treatment. Some dentists extract permanent teeth because it's easier to create more space between teeth, while others use alternative methods, such as palate expansion or headgear to correct one's smile.

Some argue that pre-orthodontic tooth extraction makes the jaw narrower and forces the tongue to lay further back into the mouth and restrict the airway. Also, some believe that extractions can lead to changes in one's facial appearance and temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). TMD is a condition that results in oral issues including chewing problems and jaw pain. However, further research is needed because it is unclear whether these notions are actually the case.

Others counter these arguments and claim that the jaw doesn't necessarily become narrowed and can even become widened depending on various factors. In addition, some argue that extractions can be beneficial for individuals with lip strain or thin gums.

Studies observing patients who've had teeth extracted for orthodontic treatment are inclusive in their findings. These studies often only offer a limited assessment of the patient's airway to see what's actually occurring.  Two studies of patients found no change in the pharyngeal airway as well as a third study.  However, three other studies found a reduction in the airway size of some patients. Researchers believe that the difference in findings could be due to racial differences in the response of the airway to movement of the teeth.

Overall, its unclear whether or not extractions lead to sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a complex condition and further research is needed to explain its association with permanent tooth extractions. If you feel that you are excessively sleepy during the day you may want to contact a sleep specialist so that they can conduct a sleep study. March 6-13: National Sleep Awareness Week

Have you been getting 7-9 hours of sleep every night? If not, make sure to add "better sleep" to your goals this month, because March 6-13 is the National Sleep Foundation's National Sleep Awareness Week! Check out this list of tips and the 2016 SAW Infographic.

In order to get a good night's sleep, here are some recommendations from the National Sleep Foundation:

  • Turn off electronics such as mobile devices and laptops (which give off blue light that can prevent you from falling asleep) before going to sleep.
  • Schedule enough hours of sleep. Plan ahead and stick with the same schedule.
  • Even a little exercise can mean better sleep.
  • Create a sleep-friendly environment (a comfortable bed, closed curtains, no loud noises, etc.).
  • Have a bedtime routine (relaxing exercises, deep breathing, light reading, calming music, etc.).

You may think that missing a few hours of sleep is no big deal, but the quality and quantity of sleep you get can have a huge impact (both short-term and long-term) your overall health. Still not convinced? Here are some reasons why sleep is important from the NIH's National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute:

Mental Health

A lack of sleep can lead to depression, suicide, risky behavior, and other emotional problems. It changes the brain's activity, which can cause children and adolescents in particular to lose focus, feel unmotivated, or have mood swings.

Brain Health

Adequate sleep is crucial for proper brain function, because it allows your brain to solidify what you've learned and get ready to learn more the next day. Don't think that pulling an all-nighter will help you score better on your exam: sleeping well improves learning and helps you solve problems more efficiently.

Physical Health

Sleep is connected to the healing of heart and blood vessels, maintenance of hormone levels, growth, and the immune system. If you don't get enough sleep, you could have a higher risk of heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, or stroke.

Safety

Your safety could be at risk when you don't get enough sleep. Sleep deficiency means a slower reaction time, more opportunities for mistakes, and decreased productivity. You definitely don't want to be driving when you feel sleepy!

National Wear Red Day 2016 -Today!

Today, Friday, February 5, 2016 marks National Wear Red Day, which is the kick-start event for American Heart Month! 

Why wear red today? Well, by wearing red,  individuals can help raise awareness of cardiovascular disease and improve the health of our loved ones. National Wear Red Day is an annual tradition that was created to raise money and awareness about heart disease and stroke in women. Through educating others about this number one killer in our nation, we can help others live longer and healthier lives. Heart disease and stroke kill 1 in 3 women each year. Putting it into perspective, it kills approximately one woman every 80 seconds. However, the conditions of cardiovascular disease are 80% preventable!

The organization Go Red For Women advises women to schedule a Well-Woman Visit, a prevention check-up to review a woman’s overall health by measuring blood pressure, checking cholesterol levels and looking for signs of heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. They are also collecting donations to help fund research. If you're on social media, you can also use the hashtags, #GoRedWearRed and #WellWomenVisit. Through their initiative and research to healthy lifestyle changes that began in 2003, they've found that:

  • Almost 90% have made at least one healthy behavior change.
  • More than one-third has lost weight.
  • More than 50% have increased their exercise.
  • 6 out of 10 have changed their diets.
  • More than 40% have checked their cholesterol levels.
  • One third has talked with their doctors about developing heart health plans.
  • Today, nearly 300 fewer women die from heart disease and stroke each day
  • Death in women has decreased by more than 30 percent over the past 10 years.

Save Your Heart: American Heart Month

All throughout February we're celebrating American Heart Month! This national awareness month provides WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease, and the American Heart Association the opportunity to make others across the world aware about cardiovascular disease. These organizations help organize, educate, and fund medical research on cardiovascular disease and its prevention.

Cardiovascular disease, including heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure, is the NUMBER ONE killer of both women and men in the United States. So much so that it's responsible for one out of every three deaths each year. Over 6 million American women are impacted by heart disease, while another 37 million women are at risk of developing heart disease.

This annual campaign was initiated in 1964 by the American Heart Association and has continued to heighten awareness across the nation. However, the number of individuals impacted by cardiovascular disease is predicted to grow more than 23.6 million by the year 2030. Unfortunately, nearly half of all Americans have at least one major risk factor, but are unaware of it. It's important to also know the warning signs, including chest discomfort, shortness of breath, or sudden lack of responsiveness. To spot a stroke, think F.A.S.T: Face drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty, time to call the police.

Becoming aware of the risk factors of cardiovascular disease, for instance obesity and diabetes, is key to understanding what needs to be done to lower your risk. Eating a healthy diet, not smoking, exercising, and picking up other positive health habits will help keep your heart pumping!

President Obama wrote, “We have lost devoted mothers and fathers, loved siblings, and cherished friends to this devastating epidemic. During American Heart Month, as we honor their memories, let us recommit to improving our heart health and continuing the fight against this deadly disease, for ourselves and our families.”

The Effect of Birth Control on Oral Health

Birth control pills have many benefits and are a popular contraceptive method which increases estrogen/progesterone levels. However, they can also negatively affect your oral health.

According to The American Academy of Periodontology, many factors such as smoking, poor nutritiongenetics, and medications (including oral contraceptives, antidepressants, and heart medications) can impact gum health. These factors may increase risk for gum disease, which 75 percent of Americans, and especially periodontal disease, an advanced type of gum disease linked to osteoporosis, stroke, diabetes, heart disease, and low-birth-weight babies that 50% of Americans have.

Many studies have demonstrated the clear connection between dental health and sex hormones. The risk for periodontitis is especially high during puberty and pregnancy due to increased estrogen levels, which promote the flow of blood in the mouth and forces gums become red, swollen, and more susceptible to bacteria. Furthermore, women have a greater chance of having dental problems because of their hormones.

There is also evidence that those who use oral contraceptives had more bleeding sites, tooth attachment loss, gum gaps, inflammation, and gum destruction. If you are our patient, please let us know your history and habits so we can effectively treat and prevent gum disease. Certain medications can impact the effectiveness of antibiotics. To prevent and resolve gum disease, make sure to use an antimicrobial mouthwash, floss, and avoid smoking, stress, and sugar.

A Healthy Smile = A Healthy Start to 2016

It's the beginning of 2016 and a great time to make some resolutions for the new year! If staying healthy is one of your resolutions this year, make sure to add "excellent oral health" to the list as well. Dr. Nathan Pfister, a biological dentist in Alabama, claims that dental health and overall health influence each other in many ways.

Dr. Pfister recognizes the fact that dental bacteria and oral inflammation are connected to many medical conditions such as memory disorders, Alzheimer's, heart problems, diabetes, and stroke. Therefore, he connects the diet and oral health habits of his patients by observing plaque samples with a microscope. This way, Dr.Pfister can determine whether dental issues are caused by poor oral hygiene habits, an unbalanced diet, or a medical problem.

There is even further evidence of the strong connection between dentistry and medicine in a study published in the journal of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR)Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. According to this study, there is also a link between periodontal or chronic inflammatory gum disease (which can vary based on smoking habits) and an increased risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Professor Jo L. Freudenheim, PhD, of the University at Buffalo's School of Public Health and Health Professions adds that this common disease is associated with heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and other cancers.

Out of the 73,737 postmenopausal women (none of whom were previously diagnosed with cancer) who participated in the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study led by Professor Freudenheim, 26.1% had periodontal disease. 6.7 years later, the women with this disease had a 14% higher risk of breast cancer.

Possible explanations for the connection between breast cancer and periodontal disease include the effect of inflammation on breast tissues and oral bacteria entering the circulatory system. Professor Freudenheim claims that more studies need to be conducted in other populations in order to determine if there is a causal relationship between oral bacteria and breast cancer.

Not All Chocolate Is Created Equal: The Health Benefits of Dark Chocolate

dark-chocolateAlthough people usually associate chocolate with trips to the dentist's, eating certain types of chocolate in moderation may actually be beneficial for your health. If you want to indulge on candy this Halloween, dark chocolate is one of the better options. Here are some reasons why:

1. It's nutritious.

Dark chocolate with high cacao content is packed with nutrients. One 100 gram bar (although we recommend consuming dark chocolate in moderation) high in cacao content contains a wealth of fiber, iron, magnesium, copper, and manganese. Despite the sugar and calories, there is also plenty of potassium, phosphorous, zinc, and selenium that is beneficial for your health. The fats in dark chocolate include mostly saturated fats, which are recommended over unsaturated fats, and some polyunsaturated fats, which help lower your chances of developing heart disease, stroke, and high cholesterol. Dark chocolate is also a great choice if you want an energy boost without having to worrying about not being able to sleep at night - its caffeine level is minimal compared to that of coffee.

2. It has tons of antioxidants.

Dark chocolate holds the ranking of the sixth top antioxidant food. This is due to the fact that it is packed with biologically active organic compounds (polyphenols, flavonols, catechins, etc.) which act as antioxidants. In addition, cacao has greater antioxidant activity than many other fruits such as blueberries and Acai berries. Antioxidants help prevent or delay cell damage caused by free radicals, which can effectively help lower risks of cancer and other diseases.

3. It has great benefits for your blood (and your brain)!

According to a study from JAMA (The Journal of the American Medical Association), cacao and dark chocolate can at least mildly improve blood flow and reduce blood pressure. High-flavonol cacao also improves blood flow in the brain and cognitive function, especially for elders with mild mental impairment. Because it contains stimulants such as caffeine, dark chocolate is especially helpful for improving short-term brain function.

4. It's great for your skin!

Flavonols enhance blood flow to the skin, increase hydration , and prevent skin damage from the sun. According to one study, the amount of UV radiation required to produce sunburn or redness within 24 hour of exposure increased significantly after eating high-flavonol dark chocolate for 12 weeks.

5. It can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The substances in dark chocolate prevent cholesterol from accumulating in the arteries and protect against the reaction of unhealthy cholesterol with free radicals. One study published in Clinical Nutrition in 2012 observed that eating chocolate more than 5 times per week reduced cardiovascular disease risks by 57%!

Xylitol's Not as Sweet as You Think

Popular among the vast array of sugar substitutes, xylitol is one of the more popular natural sweeteners commonly found in sugar-free gum, toothpaste, cosmetic gels, and sweets.

Although xylitol is not dangerous and is found to cause less damage to teeth than sugar, it isn't exactly perfect. Previously, xylitol was suggested  to reduce tooth decay by preventing the growth of acid-producing bacteria. Yet, according to the Cochrane Library,  researchers suggests that there is little evidence that xylitol is actually beneficial in reducing the prevalence of tooth decay.Many individuals turn to sugar substitutes to satisfy a "sweet tooth," even in processed foods, which can worsen the risk of heart disease, stroke, or diabetes. While it is true that Xylitol is found in nature in many plants, xylitol is also manufactured for commercial use by the process of sugar hydrogenation, which involves the compound Raney nickel. The long term effects of are not currently known.

On the negative side, xylitol is only partially broken down in the stomach, and instead remains relatively intact in the intestines. The undigested portion ferments, and can lead to stomach cramps, acid reflux, or diarrhea. No need to worry, xylitol is FDA approved and is not considered hazardous.

Researchers in a study using 5,903 participants over ten different studies were unable to prove any benefit in the natural sweetener for preventing tooth decay in children and adults. For xylitol-containing products, including sugar-free gum, researchers did not find any significant evidence. According to two Costa Rican studies involving 4,216 school children, there was low quality evidence that levels of tooth decay were 13% lower in children who used a fluoride toothpaste with xylitol for three years versus those who used a fluoride-only toothpaste.

Philip Riley, a head researcher at the School of Dentistry at The University of Manchester, said, "Several of the studies included in the Cochrane review did not report sufficient information on the side effects of xylitol, which can include bloating, diarrhea and laxative effects. Sugar-free gums, sweets, mints and other products are well-known for their gastrointestinal effects and these should be clearly reported in future studies."

So, maybe xylitol isn't all it has cracked up to be! It is important to practice good oral health habits, and only chew sugar-free gum in moderation.

Dental Care Decreases Risk of Cardiovascular Disease

heart-diseaseA study conducted by the University of California, Berkeley that was published in the journal Health Economics suggests that women who consistently get dental care can lower their risk of stroke, heart attacks, and other cardiovascular problems by at least one-third!

 

The university researchers used data of individuals from nearly 7,000 registered for the Health and Retirement Study between the ages of 44 and 88. They used a longitudinal approach, keeping track of the same individuals over time. These participants were given survey questions, including the frequency of dentist visits and if there were any instances of heart, angina, stroke, or congestive heart failure in their health history within the previous two years. The data from the Health and Retirement Study was collected every two years from 1996 to 2004. While there had been previous studies that have found a link between oral health and cardiovascular disease, this study was able to show a causal effect, where dental care leads to fewer heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular issues.

 

It was also found that the same benefits that are attributed to women’s health were not found for men. However, the researchers explain that this was not completely surprising. They believe that these findings demonstrate the differences in how men and women develop cardiovascular disease. Other studies have suggested that estrogen has a protect effect against heart disease, preventing the progression of atherosclerosis. Researchers note that it is not until women reach menopause at age 50 to 55 that they start catching up to men.

 

While this study proves to be great news for women, the study authors note that in order for dental care to have a protective effect, it should be done early in the development of cardiovascular disease. Are toothbrushes actually clean?

Researchers at England’s University of Manchester have looked into the various kinds of germs found in bacteria, and they found that toothbrushes are crawling with them! They discovered that a toothbrush could harbor more than 100 million bacteria, with the likes of diarrhea-causing E. coli and skin-infecting staphylococci bacteria. This may sound completely unsanitary, but wait! The mouth isn't the cleanest place to begin with. There are hundreds of microorganisms in the mouth on a daily basis. Medical professionals note that this is perfectly normal and it is not something to sweat over. But what individuals need to worry about is when there is an unhealthy balance of bacteria in the mouth. Many people forget that the plaque that develops inside the mouth (if proper brushing is not taking place) is, in fact, bacteria. Toothbrushes are continuously introduced to bacteria every time it is placed into the mouth.

 

So if there are constantly bacteria on toothbrushes, can they make people sick? Researchers think that it’s not likely. Considering there are already bacteria in the mouth, the body’s natural defenses make it difficult for an infection to occur just from brushing teeth. However, one should not take the body’s ability to defend itself for granted. There are still ways to keep fewer bacteria from entering the mouth. In many homes the bathroom sink is in close vicinity to the toilet. But that should not be the excuse for placing toothbrushes near where flushing occurs! Every time the toilet flushes, it sends sprays of bacteria into the air. Try to place toothbrushes as far as possible from the toilet, giving bacteria less of a chance in getting into the mouth.

 

Bacteria love moist environments and it is important that the brush dries through and through between each brushing. Try to avoid covers that enclose the brush, which would leave the toothbrush moist and bacteria-friendly. It is also a good idea to keep the toothbrush upright in a holder, instead of lying it down. Also, no matter how clean your sister or any of your other members of your family, don’t ever use each other’s brushes. Don’t even place toothbrushes in the same cup! Whenever toothbrushes come in contact with each other, they can easily exchange bacteria.

We recommend that you replace your toothbrush every season(3 months) to help prevent bacterial growth and to maintain oral hygiene.

3 Tips On Keeping Your Breath Fresh!

Are you worried about the prospect of having breath? Don’t worry you’re not alone; according to the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, there are 40 millions Americans that suffer from bad breath. However, it doesn't need to be this way! Here are a few ideas on how to go about your day without worrying about halitosis.

1. Keep up with brushing and flossing

After a big meal, people are bound to have food caught in between the many crevices of their mouths. Food that has been left behind can break down, resulting in sticky build-up known as plaque. To keep this plaque build-up from happening, try brushing and flossing after meals, which can keep the mouth clean and breath fresh.

 

2. Don’t forget the tongue!
After brushing and flossing at night, many people just turn off the bathroom lights and hit the hay. But wait; the tongue can harbor tons of bad-smelling bacteria! Without proper maintenance, a white layer can form on the tongue. People tend to find toothbrushes to big to reach to back end of the tongue without causing discomfort. Dentists suggest using tongue scrapers, which can easily maneuver the tongue, getting rid of bacteria, leftover food, and even dead cells that brushing can’t take away.

3. Pass on the onions and garlic
Although they are undeniably great additions to a great sandwich, these two food ingredients are infamous bad-breath causers. Unfortunately, brushing after consuming garlic and onions does not do the trick; substances within these foods actually travel down the blood stream and into the lungs, where they constantly get breathed out. If you know fresh breath is necessary for a certain social meeting, save onions and garlic for another time!

Tips to Conquer Dental Fear!

Let’s be honest: many people tend to be scared or nervous before a visit to the dentist’s office. Dental phobia is something that people continually cope with; however, it doesn’t always have to be this way! Here are a few tips on how to beat dental fear.

 

Look for a dentist that you feel most comfortable working with. There are many dentists out there with different personalities, and finding one that suits an individual can be key in feeling less anxious and nervous during an appointment. Dentists are willing to work through fears and are happy to go slow if need be.

 

Ask the dentist to go through the procedure beforehand. Having a dentist go through the steps can allow individuals to prepare for what is to come. Patients always have the right to know what kind of work their dentist will be doing on them.

 

Don’t be afraid to let the dentist know when the procedure is uncomfortable. Patients are able to establish “stop” signals with dentists. This allows the patient to take breaks when needed and can allow them to relax before proceeding.

 

Breathing exercises are also a great way to calm the nerves and prepare for a dental procedure. There are medications that allow patients to relax. Dentists recommend nitration oxide, anti-anxiety medicine or sedation for patients who can become extremely nervous during an appointment. Healthy Lifestyle = Good Oral Health!

A study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the German Institute of Human Nutrition reported that adult men and women who never smoked, kept a healthy diet, maintained physical activity, and had a body mass index (BMI) under 30 were 78% less likely to develop chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and stroke. Those who stuck it out with only one of these four healthy lifestyle factors lowered their chronic disease risk by almost 50%, and risk levels decreased as individuals adapted more of these healthy behaviors.

So how does this connect to dentistry and oral health? Well, when looking these healthy factors from the flip side, poor eating habits, tobacco use, and excess body weight have strong correlations with oral health, especially periodontal disease, along with other health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

The participants in the study ranged from ages 35-65 and at the start of the study, each individual’s weight and height were measured. Participant’s health history, physical activity and eating habits were also recorded. They were tracked for almost 8 years and their health was tracked throughout that time. Out of the participants that actively exhibited all four healthy behaviors, they had a 93% reduced risk for diabetes, 81% reduced risk for heart disease, 50% reduced risk for stroke, and 36% reduced risk for cancer.

Dentists continue to back up the importance of eating healthy, getting enough physical activity, and limiting tobacco use. Dental research continues to document oral health benefits that come with tobacco cessation, leading a healthy diet, and maintaining a healthy weight. Dentists continue to push for less frequent exposure to soft drinks and beverages with a high sugar content, which can lead to both tooth decay and an unhealthy increase in body mass index.

Remember: monitoring what you eat not only benefits your oral health but also benefit your overall body. Continue to be mindful of how much you exercise and what you decide to put in your mouth. Things To Do On July 4th!

I bet everyone is so excited with July 4th right around the corner. Now that the Summer is here I know everyone has vacations, desserts, beaches, and other fun things on their mind.  If not, trust me, we will find plenty of things for you to enjoy whether it may be a cozy evening indoors or an active day outdoors. NEEDHAM - The Fireworks have been promised to be better than ever and our Grand Parade will feature special guests and new musical groups.   The Fireworks will be at Memorial Park on Wednesday evening, July 3rd.   The evening will begin with food, ponyrides, face painting and other family entertainment followed byFireworks.  The Grand Parade will start at 9 am on Thursday, July 4th.   After the Parade on Thursday there will be more food, a flea market, an old fashioned baseball game, children’s games and much more!

Boston Navy Week – June 29-July 6: This is the sixth year in a row that Boston has been chosen to host a Navy Week celebration, which recognizes the Sailors who serve our country and the communities that support them. Through a series of events ranging from ship visits to Navy band musical performances and meet and greet events with local Sailors, the U.S. Navy will come together with the members of the greater Boston community to honor the history of the Navy and cultivate new connections between the city and the world’s greatest maritime fighting force. Acton Celebrates Independence Day – Acton July 4:  Celebrate Independence Day at NARA Park in Acton, MA. The day starts off with family fun activities from 3-7 PM, followed by a free concert featuring the Rolling Stones Tribute Band, The Blushing Brides at 7:30 PM and fireworks at 9:30 PM. Food vendors will be onsite. No alcoholic beverages permitted. Free Admission – some activities may have a small fee.

Picnic in the Park – Concord July 4: A program of favorite patriotic tunes by this 50-year-old concert band. Location: Emerson Field, Stow Street. The concert will be in the Concord Armory if it rains. Time: 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with band performance at 3 p.m.

Pepperell Fourth of July – Pepperell July 7: Parade at 12:30 p.m.; Rockin Rib Fest at the Community Center fields; fireworks at dusk. Location: Parade starts at Pepperell Town Hall, travels on Main Street East around the rotary, follows Hollis Street North past town field, turns left onto and marching up Tucker Avenue, and ends at the large parking lot between Nissitissit Middle School and the field where the fireworks are displayed.

Gloucester Independence Day Horribles Parade and Fireworks – July 4 – ?Gloucester Horribles Parade begins at 6 p.m. and circles through downtown Gloucester. Fireworks begin at 10 p.m. Favorite viewing locations: Stacy Boulevard, Stage Fort Park, Western Avenue.

Danvers Family Festival – Danvers June 3 – July 4:  Festivities leading up to the Danvers Fireworks on July 4 start about a month prior with themed nights, concerts, games and festivals. The Fireworks Festival itself takes place at Plains Park from 4 – 9 pm. The main stage hosts musical performances while various concession stands sell delicious food. The Just for Fun areas features games and rides for kids. Throughout the early evening there is a stunt plane show, along with parachuting and a military fly over. The famed fireworks show begins at 9:30 pm.

Beverly Farms Independence Day Celebration – Beverly Farms July 4: The featured events are the always unique morning Horribles Parade and a spectacular evening shoreline illumination and aerial fireworks display held at West Beach. Rounding out the holiday events, the Committee also sponsors the House Decorating Contest, the Family & Friends Cookout, the youngsters Scavenger Hunt, the post Parade “Old Timers” adult softball game at Dix Park, races and games at West Beach on the afternoon of the 4th, and musical entertainment at the Beach leading up to the fireworks.

Harvard Town Fireworks at Fruitlands – Fruitlands Museum, Harvard July 3: The pastoral site of Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, Massachusetts will be home to an all-American Independence Day celebration on Friday, July 1st with bands, food, and fireworks. Music is slated to start at 5 P.M. Hot dogs, hamburger, and drinks will be available for purchase; local Girl Scouts will be on hand selling desserts. Visitors are also allowed to bring picnics to the event.

Psychological Distress Linked To Increased Risk Of Death

Stressed out? It may be time to take a breather! New research shows that stress, even at low levels, were 20% more likely to die over a ten year time span.

However, these findings can't necessarily prove that being stressed or depressed is directly linked to death. Similar studies have been conducted and have been unsuccessful in figuring out if people become sick because they're stressed or they become stressed because they're sick.

This study was featured in the British Medicine Journal. The data was compiled from information taken from over 68,000 people over the age of 35. The survey asked a variety of questions on topics such as sleep patterns, ability to face problems, and feelings of worthlessness. The lower the score of the survey taker, the less stressed of a person they are.

The most startling part of the survey is that more than 8,300 people passed away, mostly from heart disease and stroke.

Taking steps toward reducing stress is an important factor in maintaining optimum health. If you feel that your stress level is affecting your quality of life, make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible.
