My Amazing Experience with ZOOM! Whitening

August 8th, 2015

Hi, everyone!

My name is Jules Mann and I am a rising junior at Wellesley College. I am so excited to be a guest blogger for the Wellesley Dental Group so that I can share my experience using their ZOOM! Whitening service.

Before...

...and after!

Even after years of braces, I had always felt slightly insecure about my smile. My teeth had some discoloration and uneven shades, most likely due to my burgeoning coffee habit. My whitening appointment changed all of that.

My appointment was quick and painless. I experienced almost no sensitivity! Kathy, the dental assistant who helped me, was quick, thorough, and kept me smiling as she applied gel and then light to my teeth. In under 30 minutes, my teeth were many shades whiter and had completely even coloration. Now, I use the custom whitening trays Kathy made for me at home so that I can maintain my new smile and not have to give up my morning cup of coffee.

I am so grateful for Kathy and the rest of the team at Wellesley Dental Group; I just cannot stop smiling!

Internship Experience at Wellesley Dental Group

July 30th, 2013

Hi, my name is Christine and I am a student at Wellesley College and an intern at Wellesley Dental Group. After vacationing for a month in Seoul, South Korea, I spent my summer in Boston for the first time- shadowing Dr. Femina Ali while working on my dental school application.  I had previously shadowed at Wellesley Dental Group in January 2013 and learned so much real world dentistry. When they decided to offer another internship I could not resist.

Just Last Thursday, Dr. Ali asked me to stay and watch her own implant procedure by Dr. Ghazwan Ghazi, their periodontist.  I hadn't yet seen this treatment, so I accepted without hesitation.  It was marvelous! I learned so much about the procedure, and Dr. Ghazi's skill was clearly unmatched.  Dr. Femina was also very calm and comfortable (as usual) and after about an hour I saw the result: a beautiful blend of art and architecture.

During my time at Wellesley Dental Group I became a part of their family Family. I have learned so much and would recommend interning there to any dental enthusiast. This summer has been very special to me; I'll never forget my fabulous experiences at Wellesley Dental Group, and I'm looking forward to my Senior Year at Wellesley College!

Thank You Wellesley Dental Group!

Vacation week!

February 19th, 2013

It’s school vacation week! At WDG, we had an amazing President’s Day where we saw so many of our wonderful patients. We’re looking forward to seeing so many more this week. It really makes us happy when vacations come because it means that our busiest patients will have enough time to put their health first and come visit us for their much-needed care. This is especially true for our youngest patients who attend school.

Have you visited your dentist recently? Now might be a great time. It’s so important to prioritize your oral health, especially for children. Starting good oral health habits early on lead to a life of better oral and general health.

Besides visiting your dentist, here are some fun things you can do this vacation week!

1. Visit the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and check out their special learning opportunities with your child. Workshops are from 10 am – 4 pm.

2. It’s February Vacation week at the zoo! Visit the Franklin Park Zoo and experience the wonders of the animal kingdom and the jungle with your child. This week, the zoo is offering extra learning opportunities for young enthusiasts.

3. Even though it’s still chilly, if your child is outdoorsy, here are some great suggestions for family hikes from Mommy Poppins, like Walden Pond. It may be a good idea to call beforehand to make sure there are no weather-related issues.

4. Check out your local library for fun events, concerts, and movies! The Wellesley Free Library even has a Young Scientist event where they are bringing in owls!

5. Spend family time together. No matter what you do, having fun as a family is special! Get off the computer and connect with one another the old fashioned way. Cook, take walks, listen to music. It doesn't matter as long as you have each other.

Keep smiling and have a safe vacation!

Drs. Ali & Ali and the caring team at Wellesley Dental Group will be very happy to answer your questions and advise you on your oral health needs. Contact us today at 781-237-9071 or smile@wellesleydentalgroup.com!

We love you, too!

Winter Break at WDG

January 28th, 2013

[caption id="attachment_4109" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Photo of Wellesley College from wellesley4msia on wordpress"][/caption]

This winter we had a very special addition to our team when Wellesley College Junior and member of the Pre Dental Society, Christine Lee shadowed at WDG as she prepared for dental school. Originally from Seoul, South Korea, Christine is studying chemistry at Wellesley and enjoys cooking Korean food and playing the clarinet (although her time away at college has been a bit too busy for her to play much music).

She first realized her love of dentistry in high school when she accompanied her father, who is a dentist, to Nepal on a missionary service trip. They stayed there for a week at an orphanage. From then on, she has been single-minded in her pursuit of her dream to be a dentist.

Originally, she was thinking of applying to dental school in Korea, but last October, she realized she could go to dental school in the States. However, that meant she had many hours of shadowing to do! Searching for Wellesley’s best dental practice, Christine spoke to numerous sources and found that WDG is one of the most highly recommended practices in the area. The one thing that really convinced her that WDG was where she wanted to spend her winter break was that our mission statement reminded her of her dad’s. He, too, puts his relationship with the patient above all else.

She had a lot of fun over the month of January, organizing charts, experiencing the teamwork day-to-day, and becoming part of the WDG family. Dr. Ali even helped her stay relaxed and calm when she got worried about meeting new patients. The thing that resonated with her most, however, was Drs. Ali & Ali’s attitude toward their patients. Comfort and communication are their top priorities during treatment. Christine could see herself in their shoes post-graduation.

When not busy taking notes and absorbing everything dentistry, Christine took time to get to know the team. She had fun chatting with Carmen about her background and winter trip to Puerto Rico, she helped Julia on her search for an intern, and every day would light the room up with her smile.

Today, she will resume her classes at Wellesley as the spring semester begins. The Team at WDG will miss seeing her every day! She still doesn’t know the exact field in dentistry she wants to pursue, but is thinking that general dentistry might be where she wants to go. She doesn’t want to come into her practice with an attitude of, “I’m a doctor, you should listen to me.” Instead, she wants to be a dentist like her father and Drs. Ali & Ali.  Putting the patient first, truly serving them and building a relationship: that is what she really wants to do.

Half Of American Adults Have Periodontal Disease

September 18th, 2012

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have recently revealed that one out of every two American adults aged 30 or older has periodontal disease! How shocking is that?

These findings are based off of information gathered by the CDC in their 2009-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). This survey aims to evaluate the health of both adults and children in the United States. This survey was unique because for the very first time, it examined the entire mouth for various stages of periodontal disease. It's important to note that gingivitis, the beginning stage of periodontal disease, was not examined.

Also, in earlier NHANES, only partial mouth exams were done. This would leave a large margin of error since not all teeth were checked for periodontal disease. This more than likely caused for underestimations in previous NHANES.

Pamela McClain, DDS, president of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and a practicing periodontist, said:

“This is the most accurate picture of periodontal disease in the U.S. adult population we have ever had. For the first time, we now have a precise measure of the prevalence of periodontal disease, and can better understand the true severity and extent of periodontal disease in our country. The AAP values its collaboration with CDC to better understand the burden of periodontal disease in Americans.”

There are also numerous curiousities worth noting, such as periodontal disease being more common in men than women and most prevalent in Mexican Americans. Smokers, those living below poverty level, and those with less than a high school diploma all boast high rates as well.

Drs. Ali & Ali take periodontal disease very seriously. During a hygiene appointment, each patient is thoroughly examined for signs and symptoms. If there is a problem developing, the patient is fully educated on the disease and what can be done to control it.

If you have questions on periodontal disease or another concern, please don't hesitate to contact us at 781-237-9071 or smile@wellesleydentalgroup.com!

Basix Dental Savings

September 21st, 2009

Many area colleges, including Brandeis and Wellesley College, utilize the Basix Student Dental Savings & Wellness Support Program.  This program provides insured students access to contracted dental providers at a discount.  There are no claims to file and no exlcusions.  Wellesley Dental Group (providers Dr. Ejaz Ali and Dr. Femina Ali) is part of the Basix Dental Savings plan.  More information on the program and the participating colleges are at http://www.basixstudent.com.

We know that it can be hard being away from home.  But sometimes getting to your hometown/country for your medical and dental care is not possible.  It's very important, however, to maintain your oral health and continue to get professional cleanings and check-ups at least every six months.  On the Basix student website, we noticed they have a neat tool for college students called "Campus Fit."  We're not sure if this is accessible for all colleges that participate in Basix, or if it's solely for Wellesley College students, but you can find it at http://campusfit.basixwellness.com/.

Please feel free to contact us at abby@wellesleydentalgroup.com if you have any questions about using the Basix program at our office.
