Get Whiter Teeth For Summer!

July 5th, 2016

smiling

A dazzling bright smile is all the catch nowadays. Especially now that it's summer and there are many graduations, weddings, and fun events planned, why not show off a healthy white smile! Of course regular dental habits like brushing and flossing are ways to keep a brighter smile. However, if you feel like your smile doesn't sparkle as much as you'd like, there are many products and whitening treatments available to achieve your smile goals.

Tooth whitening is a simple process and a great option for individuals who have stained or discolored teeth. Teeth can become stained for many reasons, including tobacco use, certain medications, foods with dark dyes, and such as red wine, coffee, tea, and soda.  Even the natural aging process can cause tooth discoloration.

Since so many whitening options are available, it can sometimes be challenging to decide which one you would like to use. Come schedule an appointment and talk to the Smile Ambassadors at Wellesley Dental Group about the differences between in-office professional whitening and at-home whitening. Check out the in-office professional whitening we offer:

Home Whitening

Beautiful young woman teeth.

There are many products sold for tooth whitening that can be done at home, but it is important to consult with a dental professional before use.

Tray whitening:

Tray whitening involves using custom-made trays and whitening gel only available through your dentist. At-home professional tray whitening typically lasts from ten to 14 days.

Paint-on teeth whiteners:

Teeth-Whitener-Paint

Paint-on whiteners are sold at convenient stores and are relatively inexpensive. This method consists of a gel that is applied to the tooth using a small brush. The gel hardens and eventually dissolves in the mouth.

Whitening strips:

Teeth-whitening strip kits are a common home whitening procedure which includes thin, flexible plastic (polyethylene) strips that contain hydrogen peroxide on one side. The strips are typically worn for 30 minutes a day, twice a day but vary in duration depending on the brand.

Whitening mouthwash and toothpaste:

Several brands of whitening toothpastes and mouthwashes can be found at many drug stores and convenient stores and are typically the least expensive option. These toothpastes and mouthwashes help remove surface stains by using mild abrasives. However, these products only mildly lighten your teeth and are not as reliable as in-office whitening treatments.

Home Whitening Done Right

July 31st, 2014

Whitening your teeth at home has never been easier with so many whitening kits available for purchase at anywhere from cosmetic shops like Sephora to grocery stores.  Some of the more popular whitening kits include Crest 3D Whitestrips and GLO Brilliant Personal Teeth Whitening Devices.  Although such "DIY" style teeth whitening may seem safe and effective, it is still important to discuss whitening treatment options with your dentist prior to using them.  In fact, even the American Dental Association (ADA) suggests that people should see a dentist prior to undergoing any sort of teeth whitening by a non-dentist.

Although many of us equate a bright, white smile with healthy teeth, the ADA warns that white teeth may not necessarily be healthy teeth.  For instance, teeth naturally yellow with age regardless of oral health.  Additionally, ultra white spots on your teeth could suggest that you have too much fluoride in your diet or act as an indicator of calcium deficiency.  A consultation with your dentist prior to starting a home whitening program is crucial for many reasons.  First, a dentist can supervise your teeth as you are using a whitening program.

For instance, your dentist could prevent you from experiencing the effects of over-bleaching, which include uneven color spots or even a bluish hue.  Additionally, it is important to have healthy gums as diagnosed by a dentist because whitening can cause gum irritation in certain cases.  Another common side effect of whitening is heightened teeth sensitivity.  Dentists can predict whether or not you will experience sensitivity issues and recommend products like special sensitivity toothpastes accordingly.  Finally, sometimes you don't even need a whitening kit for whiter teeth!  In some cases, a simple scaling and professional cleaning procedure is sufficient for a brighter smile.

Dr. David McFadden, a professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Texas says, "For someone with deep cavities, the bleach can have an unimpeded route to the blood vessels, nerves and bone at the root of the tooth.  It can potentially cause a bad toothache or precipitate an infection."  A dentist can quickly spot developing cavities and treat them prior to any whitening regimen to avoid pain or infections.

Benefits Of Invisalign

August 8th, 2012

We can all agree that straight teeth are aesthetically pleasing. However, did you know that there are health benefits as well? Having straight teeth helps you maintain overall good health. Invisalign is the clear, virtually undetectable way to straighten teeth without brackets and wires. Using this system is a great way to achieve optimum oral health without anyone knowing you're straightening your teeth.

One of the main benefits is healthier teeth and gums. A cause of inflamed, red gums can be crowded or widely spaced teeth. It can also be a sign of periodontal disease. When teeth are correctly aligned, the gums fit around the teeth more snugly. This is the best defense against developing gum problems. Invisalign can easily shift your teeth into alignment, giving you the ultimate dream smile!

Braces are often times hard to clean. Food gets stuck between the brackets and wires, and without proper removal, tooth decay can develop. Invisalign uses removable aligners that are taken out to eat, brush, and floss. No more trapped food!

Straight teeth will lead to great overall health, too. Untreated gum disease and tooth decay can lead to a multitude of problems in the future. Studies conducted by the American Dental Association show that oral infections can lead to the development of serious health problems such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

If you've been thinking about straightening your teeth, now is the time! Wellesley Dental Group is having an Invisalign Special Event on September 27, 2012 from 3pm-6pm. Drs. Ali and Ali will provide free consultations to see if Invisalign is right for you. You will also receive a complimentary teeth whitening worth $550 with your scheduled treatment.

Also, part of the proceeds will be donated to the Wellesley Food Pantry, a wonderful organization committed to helping others. Space is limited so call today to schedule your appointment at 781-237-9071!

Foods That Whiten Teeth

July 20th, 2012

Did you know that you can eat your way to whiter teeth? It's true! The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry has just announced that particular foods help to clean and defend teeth and gums against harmful bacteria.

Dr. Shawn Frawley said, “The teeth and gums mirror what’s going on in the rest of your body. Therefore, what you consume influences the health of your smile."

Some of these foods include pineapples, carrots, and salmon. Pineapples contain bromelain, an enzyme that helps keep plaque at bay. Carrots have vitamin A, which is excellent for tooth enamel. Salmon has a lot of vitamin D, which strengthens teeth as well as bones.

You can check out the full list here. Incorporate as many of these foods as you can for a sparking, healthy smile. As always, if you have any questions, contact us at 781-237-9071 or smile@wellesleydentalgroup.com!

White Fillings

June 11th, 2012

A big part of self esteem comes from your smile. Do you have silver fillings that you are embarrassed about? Or, are you worried about the reported side effects of the mercury?

Composite (white) fillings are made of a synthetic resin and can be customized to match the shade of your teeth. Unlike amalgam (silver) fillings which fill in the cavity and require strenghtening elements to hold it in place, composite fillings offer more durability. They are combined with dentin and enamel bonding properties to restore the tooth to its near original strength. The result is a tough and undectable filling, and that's definitely something worth smiling about!

Some people worry about the mercury content in silver fillings. They are made of half powdered alloy of silver, tin and copper and half liquid mercury. The mercury acts as a binding agent to fuse the particles together. The strength of the filling depends on mercury due to its unique bonding properties. Mercury vapor is the type of mercury that people are exposed to. You can read more about the concerns here.

Contact us today at 781-237-9071 or smile@wellesleydentalgroup.com to learn more about composite fillings!

Acidic Drinks and Tooth Erosion

May 2nd, 2012

Have you ever taken a moment to think about what soda is doing to your teeth? Dentists have talked about the damaging effects of soda and other sugary, carbonated drinks on teeth for a long time. However, people still consume too much of them on a daily basis.

Research also shows that acidic fruit juice, such as orange juice, and energy drinks are just as corrosive to enamel. Constant consumption bathes the teeth in a sugary, acidic mixture that strips away tooth enamel over time.

What’s important to remember about enamel erosion is that it’s far more dangerous than decay. This is because by drinking these harmful beverages, you are exposing teeth to its corrosive properties all at once. Serious break down of the teeth can occur and may result in crowns or dentures depending on the severity.

You don’t have to give up these types of drinks all together. Like anything, moderation is key. There are techniques you can implement to help minimize erosion.

1. If you drink the acidic beverage all at once, instead of sipping it all day, you won’t constantly bathe teeth in acid or excess sugar.

2. By using a straw, you avoid having the liquid wash your teeth in the harmful acid and sugar.

3. Rinse your mouth with water after consuming acidic or sugary beverages.

4. Make a healthier choice and opt for water.
