Each June, the Alzheimer\u2019s Association<\/a> along with many organizations and individuals across the United States observe Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month. Over 55 million people live with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. The main goal of this national campaign is to educate and provide support to all those impacted by these conditions. Dementia has been linked to risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, depression, and even gum disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Gum disease is a common oral issue that can be prevented! Gingivitis is an early stage of gum disease, that if left untreated can turn into a more severe form known as periodontal disease. Gingivitis is characterized by inflammation, with common signs of swollen and bleeding gums. Periodontal disease is a progressive inflammatory condition that leads to bone loss and even tooth loss if not managed. One of the primary causes of gum disease is bacterial dental plaque.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are many studies linking gum disease to dementia. A study performed by researchers at the University of Bergen<\/a> in 2019 suggested that bacteria associated with gum disease can travel from the mouth to the brain, where they can release enzymes that may trigger memory loss and Alzheimer\u00b4s disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another study<\/a> published in Sciences Advances<\/a>, evaluated the common bacterial culprit of gingivitis, Porphyromonas gingivalis <\/em> (P. gingivalis<\/em>) by examining post-mortem brain tissue of 53 diagnosed Alzheimer\u2019s patients. They found that patients with Alzheimer\u2019s disease had a significantly higher concentration of two toxins produced by P. gingivalis<\/em>. The researchers also tested mice to determine if an oral infection with P. gingivalis<\/em> would lead to bacteria in the brain within 6 weeks. They found that of the 8 mice infected with P. gingivalis<\/em>, all of them had signs of brain infection at the end of the 6 weeks. They then provided treatment for the gum disease in some of the mice and found that bacteria levels decreased in those mice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although further research is needed to draw definitive conclusions, researchers can confidently support the fact that maintaining good oral hygiene is key to helping you maintain overall health. Taking care of your oral health may help lower your risk of memory loss, dementia, and other debilitating conditions!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
