Sponsored by the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC)<\/a>, Respiratory Care Week (Oct. 23\u201329, 2022) recognizes respiratory therapists across the nation and helps bring awareness on respiratory health. In 1982 this observance was first created with the proclamation, \u201cChronic lung diseases constitute an important health problem in the United States. They afflict nearly 18 million Americans and cause nearly 70,000 deaths each year, many of which are the direct result of cigarette smoking.\u201d Today,\u00a0vaping\u00a0and e-cigarettes have also been added to the list of harmful culprits impacting our society.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

To observe this awesome week, individuals are encouraged to attend free health screenings and to speak with a respiratory therapist. There are also many events and resources available to help spread the word on respiratory issues like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also important to note the importance of your oral health in the health of the rest of your body, including the lungs. Oral issues can worsen symptoms of lung disease symptoms, and treatments for lung diseases may even worsen oral health issues. In terms of lung disease treatment, certain medications and equipment may cause dry mouth, which increases the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and oral infections. Oral bacteria from problems such as tooth decay and gum disease can travel to other parts of the body, including the lungs. In individuals with a compromised immune system, the body may have a hard time fighting off the bacteria and the risk of issues like pneumonia or worsening lung problems may occur. A severe form of gum disease, known as periodontal disease, has also been linked to worsening chronic inflammatory diseases like asthma and COPD. Be sure to keep your dentist updated with your current medical history so that they can adequately manage your health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
