Researchers at the University of Queensland Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences<\/a> and School of Dentistry<\/a> have suggested that young children exposed to fluoridated water were not negatively linked to emotional, behavioral development and executive functioning as adolescents. This study was published in the\u00a0Journal of Dental Research<\/em><\/a> (JDR).<\/em>\u00a0They evaluated the information of individuals aged 5-10 years from Australia’s National Child Oral Health Study of 2012-2014. These individuals were followed-up with after 7-8 years prior to turning 18 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

By looking at residential history and fluoride levels in public tap water, the researchers estimated the individuals\u2019 percentage of lifetime exposure to fluoridated water (%LEFW) from birth to the age of five years. They also measured their emotional and behavioral development using the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). In addition, their executive functioning was measured by the Behavior Inventory of Executive Functioning (BRIEF). The study found that fluoridated water exposure during the first five years of life was not linked negatively to child emotional and behavioral development and executive functioning. Those who were exposed to fluoridated water during this time had their measures of emotional, behavioral development and executive functioning at least equivalent to that of children without exposure to fluoridated water. They also found that individuals with a lower %LEFW, in addition to those with a low household income, identifying as Indigenous, and having a neurodevelopmental diagnosis had poorer scores on the SDQ and BRIEF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The International Association for Dental Research<\/a> President Brian O’Connell noted,”Water fluoridation is unquestionably effective in preventing dental caries, and this study is an important addition to the body of literature documenting the safety of water fluoridation.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
