Causes of Gum Disease in Older Adults

Gum disease occurs when bacteria and plaque are allowed to flourish in the mouth. This leads to an infection of the gum tissue. Poor oral hygiene is often a major contributor to gum disease, but older adults have additional risk factors working against them, including:

  • Medications. Certain medications cause dry mouth as a side effect. Without adequate saliva production, you may be more likely to harbor a lot of harmful bacteria in your mouth.

Older adults with dementia may forget to brush and floss, whereas people with severe arthritis may find it very difficult to maintain a clean mouth.
  • Natural aging processes. Aging naturally weakens your immune system and bodily functions, making it easier for bacteria to thrive in your mouth.
  • Hormonal changes. Normal hormonal fluctuations during menopause can make your gums more sensitive and vulnerable to inflammation.
  • Lifestyle choices. Years of habits, such as smoking and alcohol consumption, can detrimentally affect your gum health.

Tips to Prevent Gum Disease for Seniors

Even though your risk of gum disease increases as you age, that does not mean you are doomed to an unhealthy smile. There are practical steps you can take to lower your chances of developing this condition:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss daily to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth and below the gumline. If flossing is challenging for you due to mobility problems, consider using a water flosser instead.
  • Visit your dentist at least twice a year for professional cleanings and checkups.
  • Quit smoking and limit your alcohol consumption to protect your gums and overall health.
  • Maintain a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals to support your oral health.
  • Stay hydrated to ensure adequate saliva production, which helps wash away food particles and bacteria.
  • Use an antimicrobial mouthwash to reduce plaque and prevent gum disease.
  • Manage underlying health conditions, such as diabetes, to reduce your risk of gum disease.
