Feeling spicy? Everyone likes to spice up their life every now and then, but doing so frequently with the consumption of spicy foods can take a toll on your teeth.

There are a few things you should know about spicy foods when consumed in overabundance:

Spicy foods can worsen sensitive teeth:

Tooth sensitivity can be a real pain, especially when you are trying to enjoy the foods you love. Similar to experiencing tooth sensitivity after eating or drinking sweet items, spicy foods may also trigger this sensation. Spicy foods tend to be highly acidic in addition to hot temperatures, which may cause you to feel like you have a toothache.

Spicy foods can worsen acid reflux:

Individuals suffering from acid reflux, a condition in which stomach acid flows upward through the esophagus, may experience increased symptoms of heartburn and digestive irritation when consuming spicy foods. If you commonly experience acid reflux, it is best to limit consumption of spicy foods.

Some spicy foods are high in sugar:

For instance, hot sauce is a commonly used condiment to spice up almost any meal, but it contains a high amount of sugar. The acidity and sugar content of hot sauce and some other spicy foods can increase your likelihood of developing tooth decay. Oral bacteria thrive in acidic and sugary environments which can be a nightmare for the health of your teeth. Be sure to read ingredient labels to check the sugar content of items, and it is best to consume fluoridated water with meals and throughout the day.

Spicy foods can stain teeth:

Many of us aim to have whiter teeth, but some foods and beverages may get in our way. Some spicy foods have ingredients that can cause tooth discoloration overtime, such as curry and hot sauce. If you are concerned about the shade of your teeth, don’t worry, there are many whitening options available to help brighten your smile.

Most importantly, maintaining a good oral hygiene routine and balanced diet is necessary to keep your teeth strong and healthy. When it comes to spicy foods, remember that moderation is key.
