As we all know, water is an essential part of life. Your oral health also relies on water. Staying hydrated with water, especially fluoridated water, can provide many benefits for your teeth. Fluoride is a natural mineral that helps strengthen your tooth enamel and lower your risk of developing tooth decay. Many communities have made the choice to fluoridate their community water supplies. According to the published study, which can be found in the British Dental Journal, over 35% of the world’s population have access to water fluoridation. New research conducted by researchers at Trinity College Dublin and the University College London has shown the environmental friendliness of water fluoridation. According to their study, water fluoridation has a low environmental footprint and is effective in reducing tooth decay.

The study measured the environmental impact of water fluoridation for a 5-year-old child for 1 year versus school sanctioned fluoride varnish and toothbrushing programs in the United Kingdom and across the world. They analyzed the carbon footprint, water quantity used per product, and the quantity of land use.

According to Science Daily, “The results of the study, led by Brett Duane, Associate Professor in Dental Public Health at Trinity College, concluded that water fluoridation had the lowest environmental impact in all categories studied, and had the lowest disability-adjusted life years impact when compared to all other community-level caries prevention programmes. The study also found that water fluoridation gives the greatest return on investment.”

Water fluoridation is a great cavity prevention method, and good for the environment, too.
